Facial skeleton asymmetry and its relationship to mastication in the Early Medieval period (Great Moravian Empire, Mikulčice, 9th-10th century).

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship of mastication and directional asymmetry (DA) of upper facial skeleton in Early Medieval sample from the Mikulčice settlement (Czech Republic). DESIGN: The settlement is divided into two burial areas of presumably different socioeconomic status: the castle and the sub-castle. The material consisted of 193 individuals (125 castle, 68 sub-castle). The relationship of facial skeleton DA and mastication was analysed by examining tooth wear and mandibular shape by means of 3D geometric morphometrics. Tooth wear of premolars and mola

Effects of chemical stimulation of masseter muscle nociceptors on trigeminal motoneuron and interneuron activities during fictive mastication in the rabbit.

An electrophysiological study was carried out in sixteen decerebrate and paralyzed New Zealand rabbits to determine how a bolus injection of a nociceptor stimulant (hypertonic saline, 5%) into the masseter muscle influences the activity of the trigeminal motor circuitry during fictive jaw movements. Hypodermic needles connected to a syringe held in a computer-controlled infusion pump were inserted into the anterior deep layer of either the right or the left masseter. Twenty-three infusions of 50, 70 or 80 microl saline were made in fourteen animals at constant rates over 1 min. Eight control i

Effects of ingestive mastication on particle dimensions and weight distribution of coastal bermudagrass hay fed to steers at four levels.

Coastal bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers.) hay was fed in the long form to four ruminally cannulated steers to evaluate the effects of intake level on the physical reduction of feed particles during ingestive mastication. The experimental design was a 4 x 4 latin square with 18-d periods. Treatments based on previous intakes were set at 50, 70, 90 and 110% of feed consumed per animal and fed at 12-h intervals. Boli of ingested, masticated hay were collected at the cardia and separated by wet-sieving into fragments retained on sieves of .0027 to 4.0 mm (mesh aperture). In addition, part

Minimally invasive transoral surgical approach to the medial compartment of the masticator space for venous malformation and benign tumor removal.

BACKGROUND: This article describes a new surgical technique to approach a venous malformation and benign tumors located in the medial compartment of the masticator space. METHODS: A 50-year-old woman reported painless swelling of the buccal mucosa above the medial surface of the right ramus. A CT scan and MRI imaging suggested a neuroma-like lesion. A radiological examination could not determine the nature of the lesion, and therefore, a convincing diagnosis could not be achieved. Considering the focal bone erosion at the mandibular notch, the uncertain diagnosis, and especially the impossibi

NK cell lymphoblastic lymphoma in the masticator space: a case of non-Hodgkin lymphoma with challenging maxillofacial manifestation and immunophenotype.

Clinical and pathologic findings in extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) often raise challenging problems in diagnosis. We demonstrate the first established case of lymphoma with precursor natural killer (NK) cell origin in the oral and maxillofacial region. An 81-year-old Japanese man had an enlarged facial mass mainly in the parotid region but hyposensitivity in the affected side of the mental and lingual region, and diagnostic imaging revealed the origin to be in the masticator space and indicated an advanced-stage lymphoma. The tumor cell immunophenotype was CD56(+)CD3(-)CD4(-), with no B

Sentinel transoral hemorrhage from a pseudoaneurysm of the internal maxillary artery: a complication of CT-guided biopsy of the masticator space.

A patient presented with transoral hemorrhage 3 months after CT-guided percutaneous biopsy of the masticator space, prompting concern about sentinel hemorrhage from impending carotid artery rupture related to prior radical head and neck surgery and radiation therapy. Angiographic evaluation showed the internal carotid artery to be normal but demonstrated a pseudoaneurysm of the buccal branch of the internal maxillary artery exactly corresponding to the site of prior fine-needle biopsy.

Mastication-Induced Brain Blood Flow Changes Before and After Surgical-Orthodontic Treatment in Skeletal Class III Patients: A Pilot Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular prognathism attenuates chewing-induced brain blood flow (BBF) in the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus, correlating with compromised masticatory function and cognitive performance. Surgical orthodontic treatment restores skeletal and occlusal relationships and reorganises jaw sensorimotor function; however, its effects on masticatory cortical haemodynamics remain unexplored. OBJECTIVES: This pilot study aimed to characterise longitudinal and cross-sectional BBF changes following surgical orthodontic treatment in skeletal Class III patients, and to explore whether pre-tre

Cementum thickening leads to lower whole tooth mobility and reduced root stresses: An in silico study on aging effects during mastication.

In the course of a lifetime the crowns of teeth wear off, cementum thickens and the pulp closes-in or may stiffen. Little is known about how these changes affect the tooth response to load. Using a series of finite element models of teeth attached to the jawbone, and by comparing these to a validated model of a 'young' pig 3-rooted tooth, the effects of these structural changes were studied. Models of altered teeth show a stiffer response to mastication even when material properties used are identical to those found in 'young' teeth. This stiffening response to occlusal loads is mostly caused

Polysaccharides from Citrus Fruit with Different Mastication Traits Ameliorate DSS-Induced Ulcerative Colitis by Restoring Intestinal Barrier Function and Microbiota Balance.

Mastication trait is an important indicator for evaluating citrus fruit texture and may modulate the biological activity of citrus polysaccharides. This study compared the protective effects of pulp polysaccharides from citrus fruit with different mastication traits, namely Hongmeiren (HMR, superior), Satsuma (WM, moderate), and Nanfeng tangerine (NF, inferior mastication trait) on ulcerative colitis (UC) in mice. All polysaccharides alleviated UC symptoms, with HMR showing the most pronounced effects by more markedly reducing TNF-α levels, while enhancing IL-10, ZO-1, Occludin, and MUC2 expre

Sedentary Life and Reduced Mastication Impair Spatial Learning and Memory and Differentially Affect Dentate Gyrus Astrocyte Subtypes in the Aged Mice.

To explore the impact of reduced mastication and a sedentary lifestyle on spatial learning and memory in the aged mice, as well as on the morphology of astrocytes in the molecular layer of dentate gyrus (MolDG), different masticatory regimens were imposed. Control mice received a pellet-type hard diet, while the reduced masticatory activity group received a pellet diet followed by a powdered diet, and the masticatory rehabilitation group received a pellet diet, followed by powder diet and then a pellet again. To mimic sedentary or active lifestyles, mice were housed in an impoverished environm

Short communication: Detection of mastication speed during rumination in cattle using 3-axis, neck-mounted accelerometers and fast Fourier transfer algorithm.

There have been limited reports on mastication speed during cattle rumination. The objective of this study was to establish a method to detect mastication speed based on data obtained during rumination through the use of a 3-axis accelerometer attached to the neck. A 3-axis accelerometer was attached to 6 dry Holstein cattle. When rumination behavior was observed, the accelerometer and the high-speed camera simultaneously recorded acceleration at the neck and moving image of the head movement. Based on the number of mastication movements recorded on video, mastication speed A was calculated. D

Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Presenting as an Infiltrative Masticator Space Lesion Mimicking Inflammatory Disease: A Case Report.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in adults. Although extranodal involvement is frequent, presentation as an infiltrative lesion of the masticator space is rare and may mimic inflammatory, odontogenic, salivary gland, or soft tissue disorders, leading to diagnostic delay. We report the case of a 34-year-old woman who presented with progressive right mandibular swelling, facial paresthesia, trismus, weight loss, and night sweats. Initial computed tomography suggested an inflammatory process, whereas magnetic resonance imaging revealed an in

Unilateral mandibular condylar hyperplasia with ipsilateral masticator muscle and parotid gland hypertrophy: a rare incidental finding on brain MRI.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular condylar hyperplasia (MCH) is a rare developmental disorder characterized by excessive growth of the mandibular condyle, leading to facial asymmetry, functional impairment, and dental malocclusion. Early radiological identification is essential for timely intervention, particularly when parotid gland involvement masks the underlying skeletal pathology. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old male presented with an 8-9 month history of painless left parotid swelling. MRI revealed a unique triad comprising a bulky left parotid gland measuring 4.3 × 3.2 cm compared to 3.1 × 2.4 c

Superior Ophthalmic Vein Thrombosis Associated With Acute Suppurative Parotitis and Masticator Space Cellulitis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Superior ophthalmic vein thrombosis (SOVT) is a rare phenomenon caused by both septic and aseptic etiologies. Individuals suffering from SOVT commonly present with ophthalmoplegia, proptosis, chemosis, and impaired vision. The superior ophthalmic vein is a valveless vein that drains into the cavernous sinus; for this reason, SOVT can present with dire complications such as cavernous sinus thrombosis in addition to debilitating permanent ophthalmoplegia and permanent vision loss if left untreated. Early accurate diagnosis and treatment of SOVT are of paramount importance in order to improve pat
