Thyroid cancer incidence is higher in women than men, especially during the reproductive years, for reasons that remain poorly understood. Using population-based registry data from 4 Nordic countries through 2015, we examined associations of perinatal characteristics with risk of maternal thyroid cancer. Cases were women diagnosed with thyroid cancer ≥2 years after last birth (n = 7,425, 83% papillary). Cases were matched to controls (n = 67,903) by mother's birth year, country, and county of residence. Odds ratios (ORs) were estimated using conditional logistic regression models adjusting for

BACKGROUND: One of the essential components of antenatal care (ANC) is birth preparedness and complication readiness (BP/CR). Strengthening BP/CR measures is one of the principal strategies to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity. The current study aimed at determining the level of men's knowledge about obstetric danger signs, and their involvement in BP/CR among community of Northwest Ethiopia.
METHOD: A cross-sectional community based survey was conducted in Northwest Ethiopia from May 2016 to July 2016. Data was analyzed by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software Versio

Objectives. To assess the relationship between doula utilization and health outcomes of females enrolled in Medicaid-affiliated plans in the United States. Methods. In this retrospective, observational cohort study, we used Medicaid claims data from a national health insurer to compare health outcomes between females who used and who did not use a doula (2014-2023). We conducted propensity score matching using a 1:1 case‒control match, without replacement, and fit logistic regressions to analyze the relative risks for maternal health outcomes. Results. The study population included 722 matched

Maternal health is an important aspect of women's health during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Specifically, during pregnancy, different health factors like age, blood disorders, heart rate, etc. can lead to pregnancy complications. Detecting such health factors can alleviate the risk of pregnancy-related complications. This study aims to develop an artificial neural network-based system for predicting maternal health risks using health data records. A novel deep neural network architecture, DT-BiLTCN is proposed that uses decision trees, a bidirectional long short-term memo

OBJECTIVE: Cannabis use is increasing in the United States, including among pregnant women. Legalization of cannabis and decreased public perceptions of risk have contributed to increased cannabis use. Relatively few studies have examined the association of cannabis use with maternal mental health in pregnancy, particularly among Black women who have higher rates of adverse pregnancy outcomes.
METHOD: Biosocial Impacts on Black Births (BIBB) is a prospective study conducted from 2017-2022 in three prenatal care sites in Michigan, Ohio and Florida with pregnant Black women (n = 1,066). We exam

IMPORTANCE: In the US, 5% to 6% of pregnant patients are treated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), primarily for major depressive disorder (MDD), which has a prevalence of about 12%. Psychiatric conditions are a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. MDD is a common disorder that must be treated during pregnancy to improve outcomes for the mother, infant, family, and community.
OBSERVATIONS: MDD is a complex, multifactorial brain disease arising from genetic, environmental, and epigenetic factors. Factors unique to the perinatal period are associated with additi

BACKGROUND: Maternal health is an important health indicator globally, and a major women's health issue. Efforts to improve maternal health can help ensure that women, their offspring, and their families reach their full potential for health and well-being.
OBJECTIVES: We analysed how social factors influence adverse maternal health outcomes and non-spontaneous delivery.
METHODS: We leveraged data from the population-based Norwegian register, including use of the Medical Birth Registry of Norway (MBRN), the Norwegian Patient Registry (NPR), Statistics Norway (SSB) and the Norwegian Control a

Maternal adversity (e.g., adverse childhood experiences, ACEs) and health (e.g., depressive symptoms and chronic illness) negatively impact offspring's health. One possible mechanism is via premature/accelerated biological aging, as indicated in telomere length. In this 3-year longitudinal study, we examined the association between maternal adversity and health and children's buccal telomere length (bTL) at age 3. Data from 122 mother-child dyads were analyzed. Maternal history of ACEs and chronic illness were collected at baseline (during 20-24 weeks of gestation). Their depressive symptoms a

Maternal morbidity and mortality (MMM) rates in the U.S. are high and increasing, and are disproportionately experienced by understudied, underrepresented, and underreported (U3) populations, especially Black, Indigenous, and/or rural women. Decreasing MMM among U3 women would substantially improve maternal health equity and health outcomes, yet current data limitations inhibit our ability to fully understand the reasons underlying the disparities or regional nuances. This article calls for leveraging diverse, publicly available data such as deidentified health system utilization data; geocode

BACKGROUND: The adverse cardiovascular effects of smoking are well established. We aimed to investigate the less well-understood effects of pregnancy smoke exposure on offspring cardiovascular health in early adolescence.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Data were drawn from the nationally representative Longitudinal Study of Australian Children's Child Health CheckPoint. Mothers reported mean daily cigarettes smoked in each trimester (≤10 versus >10/day), and smoking cessation during pregnancy. Blood pressure, pulse wave velocity, carotid intima-media thickness, and retinal microvascular parameters were

IMPORTANCE: Generous parental leave benefits have been associated with better mental health outcomes for parents after childbirth. However, few studies account for preconception mental health and working conditions, the latter being a requirement for generous parental leave benefits.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between levels of parental leave benefits and maternal postpartum mental health when preconception mental health, income, and employment status were considered.

Magnesium is an essential nutrient for various physiological processes and becomes even more vital during pregnancy, contributing to muscle relaxation, bone development, electrolyte balance, and blood pressure regulation. Despite the fact that the dietary sources of magnesium are diversified, it is still challenging to obtain it in sufficient quantities during pregnancy. We have elucidated its interactions and its specific impact on maternal-fetal health in different research publications. Magnesium also interacts synergistically with other micronutrients like calcium, vitamin D, potassium, zi

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious public health and human rights issue affecting at least 324 000 pregnant women annually. It also occurs at any age, with 1 in 3 women experiencing IPV in their lifetime. Abuse during pregnancy leads to direct and indirect harm to both the mother and child. It also is associated with increased rates of depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, placental abruption, uterine rupture, and hemorrhage. Due to the possibility of such morbidity, it is vital to identify women at risk of abuse and act as early as possible.

We conducted a follow up of the children in Mongolia whose mothers received one of the three doses of vitamin D (600, 2000, or 4000 IU daily) during pregnancy as part of the randomized, double-blind, clinical trial of vitamin D supplementation to determine their impact on child health to two years. In the parental trial, 119 pregnant women were assigned to 600 IU/day, 121 were assigned 2000 IU/day, and 120 were assigned 4000 IU/day starting at 12-16 weeks' gestation and continuing throughout pregnancy. At baseline, maternal serum 25(OH)D concentrations were similar across arms; 91 % were 50 nm

Since pregnancy is already characterized by mild but significant inflammatory activity in physiological conditions, when complicated by obesity the probability of a persistent inflammatory state increases, with consequent multiple repercussions that add up to the complications associated with acute inflammation. In this context, the role of resolvins, specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), deriving from omega-3 essential fatty acids, may be crucial. Indeed, differential production in numerous high-risk conditions associated with both childbirth and neonatal health, the correlation between

The clinical significance of periconceptional folic acid supplementation (FAS) in the prevention of neonatal neural tube defects (NTDs) has been recognized for decades. Epidemiological data and experimental findings have consistently been indicating an association between folate deficiency in the first trimester of pregnancy and poor fetal development as well as offspring health (i.e., NTDs, isolated orofacial clefts, neurodevelopmental disorders). Moreover, compelling evidence has suggested adverse effects of folate overload during perinatal period on offspring health (i.e., immune diseases,

There is growing interest in elucidating the determinants of newborn telomere length, given its potential as a biomarker of lifetime disease risk affected by prenatal exposures. There is limited evidence that increased maternal stress during pregnancy predicts shorter newborn telomere length. However, the few studies published to date have been conducted primarily with small samples utilizing inconsistent definitions of maternal stress. Moreover, the potential influence of fetal sex as a moderator of maternal stress effects on newborn telomere length has been largely ignored despite compelling

Pregnancy imposes increased nutritional requirements for the well being of the mother and fetus. Maternal lipid metabolism is critical for fetal development and long-term health of the offspring as it plays a key role in energy storage, tissue growth and cell signaling. Maternal fat composition is considered as a modifiable risk for abnormal lipid metabolism and glucose tolerance during pregnancy. Data derived from observational studies demonstrate that higher intake of saturated fats during pregnancy is associated with pregnancy complications (preeclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus and p

Although most pregnancies after assisted reproduction are associated with a favorable outcome for the mother and infant, reports of abnormal vascular adaptation in early pregnancy and emerging maternal and perinatal pathology warrant further investigations. Herein we extended our previous work and further examined whether perturbations of blood pressure and endothelial function during the first trimester in conceptions with nonphysiological corpus luteum (CL) numbers would persist through the third trimester of pregnancy and into the postpartum period. We investigated both maternal and perinat
