Mathematical algorithm for the automatic recognition of intestinal parasites.

Parasitic infections are generally diagnosed by professionals trained to recognize the morphological characteristics of the eggs in microscopic images of fecal smears. However, this laboratory diagnosis requires medical specialists which are lacking in many of the areas where these infections are most prevalent. In response to this public health issue, we developed a software based on pattern recognition analysis from microscopi digital images of fecal smears, capable of automatically recognizing and diagnosing common human intestinal parasites. To this end, we selected 229, 124, 217, and 229

Mathematical Modeling of Programmatic Requirements for Yaws Eradication.

Yaws is targeted for eradication by 2020. The mainstay of the eradication strategy is mass treatment followed by case finding. Modeling has been used to inform programmatic requirements for other neglected tropical diseases and could provide insights into yaws eradication. We developed a model of yaws transmission varying the coverage and number of rounds of treatment. The estimated number of cases arising from an index case (basic reproduction number [R0]) ranged from 1.08 to 3.32. To have 80% probability of achieving eradication, 8 rounds of treatment with 80% coverage were required at low e

A mathematical model for the induction of the mammalian ureteric bud.

Congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract collectively form the most common type of prenatally diagnosed malformations. Whilst many of the crucial genes that direct the kidney developmental program are known, the mechanisms by which kidney organogenesis is achieved is still largely unclear. In this paper, we propose a mathematical model for the localisation of the ureteric bud, the precursor to the ureter and collecting duct system of the kidney. The mathematical model presented fundamentally implicates Schnakenberg-like ligand-receptor Turing patterning as the mechanism by whic

River Blindness: Mathematical Models for Control and Elimination.

Human onchocerciasis (river blindness) is one of the few neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) whose control strategies have been informed by mathematical modelling. With the change in focus from elimination of the disease burden to elimination of Onchocerca volvulus, much remains to be done to refine, calibrate and validate existing models. Under the impetus of the NTD Modelling Consortium, the teams that developed EPIONCHO and ONCHOSIM have joined forces to compare and improve these frameworks to better assist ongoing elimination efforts. We review their current versions and describe how they a

A mathematical model of syphilis transmission in an MSM population.

Syphilis is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum, and is a sexually transmitted disease with multiple stages. A model of transmission of syphilis in an MSM population (there has recently been a resurgence of syphilis in such populations) that includes infection stages and treatment is formulated as a system of ordinary differential equations. The control reproduction number is calculated, and it is proved that if this threshold parameter is below one, syphilis dies out; otherwise, if it is greater than one, it is shown that there exists a unique endemic equilibrium an

Zoonotic Transmission of Waterborne Disease: A Mathematical Model.

Waterborne parasites that infect both humans and animals are common causes of diarrhoeal illness, but the relative importance of transmission between humans and animals and vice versa remains poorly understood. Transmission of infection from animals to humans via environmental reservoirs, such as water sources, has attracted attention as a potential source of endemic and epidemic infections, but existing mathematical models of waterborne disease transmission have limitations for studying this phenomenon, as they only consider contamination of environmental reservoirs by humans. This paper deve

Mathematical models of human african trypanosomiasis epidemiology.

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), commonly called sleeping sickness, is caused by Trypanosoma spp. and transmitted by tsetse flies (Glossina spp.). HAT is usually fatal if untreated and transmission occurs in foci across sub-Saharan Africa. Mathematical modelling of HAT began in the 1980s with extensions of the Ross-Macdonald malaria model and has since consisted, with a few exceptions, of similar deterministic compartmental models. These models have captured the main features of HAT epidemiology and provided insight on the effectiveness of the two main control interventions (treatment of h

The Sheffield Alcohol Policy Model - A Mathematical Description.

This methodology paper sets out a mathematical description of the Sheffield Alcohol Policy Model version 2.0, a model to evaluate public health strategies for alcohol harm reduction in the UK. Policies that can be appraised include a minimum price per unit of alcohol, restrictions on price discounting, and broader public health measures. The model estimates the impact on consumers, health services, crime, employers, retailers and government tax revenues. The synthesis of public and commercial data sources to inform the model structure is described. A detailed algebraic description of the model

Mathematical modelling of enteric neural motor patterns.

1. The enteric nervous system modulates intestinal behaviours, such as motor patterns and secretion. Although much is known about different types of neurons and simple reflexes in the intestine, it remains unclear how complex behaviours are generated. 2. Mathematical modelling is an important tool for assisting the understanding of how the neurons and reflexes can be pieced together to generate intestinal behaviours. 3. Models have identified a functional role for slow excitatory post-synaptic potentials (EPSPs) by distinguishing between fast and slow EPSPs in the ascending excitation reflex.

Mathematical approaches to modeling of cortical spreading depression.

Migraine with aura (MwA) is a debilitating disease that afflicts about 25%-30% of migraine sufferers. During MwA, a visual illusion propagates in the visual field, then disappears, and is followed by a sustained headache. MwA was conjectured by Lashley to be related to some neurological phenomenon. A few years later, Leão observed electrophysiological waves in the brain that are now known as cortical spreading depression (CSD). CSD waves were soon conjectured to be the neurological phenomenon underlying MwA that had been suggested by Lashley. However, the confirmation of the link between MwA a

Mathematical modeling of the glucose-insulin system: a review.

Mathematical modeling of the glucose-insulin feedback system is necessary to the understanding of the homeostatic control, to analyze experimental data, to identify and quantify relevant biophysical parameters, to design clinical trials and to evaluate diabetes prevention or disease modification therapies. Much work has been made over the last 30years, and the time now seems ripe to provide a comprehensive review. The one here proposed is focused on the most important clinical/experimental tests performed to understand the mechanism of glucose homeostasis. The review proceeds from models of pa

A mathematical simulation of the inflammatory response to anthrax infection.

Bacillus anthracis (anthrax) can trigger an acute inflammatory response that results in multisystem organ failure and death. Previously, we developed a mathematical model of acute inflammation after gram-negative infection that had been matched qualitatively to literature data. We modified the properties of the invading bacteria in that model to those specific to B. anthracis and simulated the host response to anthrax infection. We simulated treatment strategies against anthrax in a genetically diverse population including the following: (1) antibiotic treatment initiated at various time point

[Risk evaluation in sleeping sickness: a mathematical contribution].

The concept of "risk" is important in epidemiology but is often used in a confused way for sleeping sickness. Using a rigorous approach resulting from mathematical modelling, new virtual entomological risk indicators and parasitological transmission indexes derived from the basic reproduction rate R0 are proposed and discussed.

[A mathematical model of determining the knee joint injury].

A mathematical model of determining the injury of human knee joint was established by using structural dynamics method. The results showvered the corresponding shearing displacement and bending angle of the knee joint on the occasion of ligament avulsion, and the shearing force and bending moment which caused tibial condylar fractures under purest shearing and bending condition. The calculated results consisted with the experimental results greatly, suggesting that using mathematical method to determine the injury is feasible and this kind of method can do good to lots of subjects, such as ped

Mathematical model offers clues to Africa epidemic.

It's been known for some time that certain people of European descent have a mutation on their CCR5 coreceptor molecule, and people who have two copies of this mutation appear to be completely protected against HIV infection. However, people of African or Asian descent have neither of these mutations, which has led researchers to theorize that the mutation is the result of some long-ago viral epidemic that never made its way to Asia or Africa.

Dynamics of Japanese encephalitis--a study in mathematical epidemiology.

An S-->I-->R-->S (susceptible-infective-recovered-susceptible) epidemiological model coupling the dynamics of the spread of Japanese encephalitis (JE) in two populations, human and reservoir animals (pigs, cattle, equines, birds, etc.) through a vector population (a particular species of mosquitos, Culex vishnui, Culex tritaeniorhynchus, etc.) is discussed. We assume that there is a constant recruitment rate of the susceptibles into both the populations, whereas the death rates are proportional to the population sizes, which are hence variables. We also assume that the human population is regu

A mathematical model of adaptive behavior in quadruped locomotion.

Locomotion involves repetitive movements and is often executed unconsciously and automatically. In order to achieve smooth locomotion, the coordination of the rhythms of all physical parts is important. Neurophysiological studies have related that basic rhythms are produced in the spinal network called, the central pattern generator (CPG), where some neural oscillators interact to self-organize coordinated rhythms. We present a model of the adaptation of locomotion patterns to a variable environment, and attempt to elucidate how the dynamics of locomotion pattern generation are adjusted by the

Mathematic modeling of human amniotic fluid dynamics.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to develop a model quantifying the relative contributions of fetal swallowing and intramembranous flow to amniotic fluid dynamics during human gestation. We then used the model to simulate the impact of absent swallowing on amniotic fluid volume. STUDY DESIGN: The model was developed with published data for normal human amniotic fluid volume and composition, human fetal urine flow rate and composition (11 to 42 weeks), and extrapolated data from ovine lung fluid production. Fetal swallowing and intramembranous flow were calculated with assumptions that (1) swallowed fluid
