[Application of the maxillary sinus dialysis technique in chronic odontogenic maxillary sinusitis. A clinical case].

To this day, chronic rhinosinusitis remains the most common pathology that otorhinolaryngologists face on a daily basis. In the Russian Federation, the prevalence of chronic rhinosinusitis is about 15%, and maxillary sinusitis of odontogenic etiology accounts for 10% to 12% of all chronic inflammatory processes of the maxillary sinus. Long-term conservative therapy based on the systemic use of antibacterial drugs is usually not effective and only temporarily relieves the condition of a patient with maxillary sinusitis, but does not cure it completely. Alternative treatment methods include a co

Maxillary Sinus Papillary Edema as a Predictor of Odontogenic Sinusitis.

OBJECTIVES: Odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) refers to purulent sinusitis caused by infectious maxillary dental pathologies, with > 90% occurring unilaterally. While various clinical features suggest ODS, diagnosing some ODS patients can be challenging. This study aimed to determine the value of maxillary sinus papillary edema (MSPE) in predicting ODS. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients who underwent at least maxillary antrostomy for unilateral sinus disease (USD). Adequately powered samples of three USD cohorts were generated: ODS, infectious maxillary CRS without nas

ANATOMY OF THE MAXILLARY SINUS: IMPLICATIONS FOR ODONTOGENIC SINUSITIS DEVELOPMENT.

UNLABELLED: This study investigates the anatomical prerequisites that could contribute to the development of this condition. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT), the study examined the structure and relationships of key anatomical features, including the alveolar process, sinus wall thickness, and the position of the teeth in relation to the maxillary sinus. RESULTS: The results revealed that the lower wall of the maxillary sinus is predominantly formed by the alveolar process, with significant variability in wall thickness, especially between the central and l

Maxillary Sinusitis Induced by Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw.

The involvement of maxillary sinuses in patients taking bone-related medications has not been comprehensively considered in the literature, mostly dental. Considering the fact that paranasal sinuses are often captured in dental radiographs, it is incumbent upon dental practitioners to recognize abnormal presentations in the paranasal sinuses to ensure the appropriate management of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). We present a case of a giant cell tumor (GCT) with atypical chronic sinusitis manifestation leading to MRONJ.

Novel Management for Severe Odontogenic Maxillary Sinusitis Based on Pathophysiology.

Endoscopic sinus surgery is commonly performed to treat odontogenic maxillary sinusitis. However, recurrence and natural ostium reclosure often occur due to the inadequate patency of the excretory route. Furthermore, classical maxillary sinus radical surgery is still performed for odontogenic maxillary sinusitis even though it can cause postoperative maxillary sinus deformation, loss of function, and a postoperative maxillary cyst. A management that addresses these issues has not yet been identified. This study reported a conservative maxillary sinus management, wherein a nasoantral window is

Computed Tomography Evaluation of Unilateral Chronic Maxillary Sinusitis With Osteitis.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is the preferred noninvasive method for the evaluation of osteitis in chronic sinusitis. Some scholars believe that the bone changes associated with chronic sinusitis always show high attenuation (high density) and are positively correlated with the severity of the disease. However, sinus bone remodeling is a complex process that may cause high or low attenuation. There have been few reports on the spread of osteitis. Therefore, additional research on sinus CT is necessary. OBJECTIVE: To observe bony changes in chronic maxillary sinusitis (CMS) by CT and r

Eye Globe Rupture Caused by Dental Implant-Related Maxillary Sinusitis.

Eye globe rupture with consequent enucleation is an extremely rare complication of orbital infection spreading from maxillary sinusitis related to dental implant surgery. We report a case of orbital abscess leading to rupture of the globe of the eye in a 60-year-old woman with acute unilateral maxillary sinusitis after dental implant surgery on the left maxillary alveolar bone. The patient had uncontrolled diabetes. Despite surgical intervention, infection of the maxillary sinuses spread to the ocular area, causing disastrous results. To our knowledge, this entity has not been reported previou

Bacteriology of chronic maxillary sinusitis in relation to sinoscopic appearance.

BACKGROUND: The bacteriology of chronic maxillary sinusitis in relation to different sinoscopic appearances is reported in this study. METHODS: When transantral sinoscopy via an anterior wall puncture was used to examine the maxillary antra in patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis, the sinoscopic appearances were divided into five types. Maxillary antra in which ostia were recognized under the endoscope and no secretion existed were classified as type 1. Maxillary antra in which ostia were not recognized and no secretion existed belonged to type 2. Maxillary antra in which seromucoid secr

[Odontogenic chronic maxillary sinusitis: regenerative possibilities of oro-antral defect].

Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis often develops into a chronic picture of unilateral inflammation, progressively interesting the whole antrum mucosa. The only decisive therapy of this pathology is a surgical one that, by completely removing pathologic tissues, starts sinus restoration by a healthy respiratory mucous membrane. This tissue grows from the nasal cavity after the radical surgery (according to Caldwell-Luc), presupposing an antrum drainage through that same cavity. Nevertheless, if the inflamed area is just limited in the central and posterior recesses, and the hiatus semilunaris of

Treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis--comparing cefpodoxime proxetil with amoxicillin.

In order to evaluate the clinical efficacy and tolerance of cefpodoxime proxetil, compared with that of amoxicillin in the treatment of acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis, a randomized, double-blind, parallel group comparative study was performed. A total of 286 adults patients were included at 12 centres, each treatment group consisting of 143 patients. Each patient was treated for 10 days and observed before and after treatment. The observations included clinical, roentgenological, bacteriological and laboratory examinations. At inclusion, the most common pathogens were Haemophilus influenz

Short and long-term treatment results in chronic maxillary sinusitis.

The diagnostic criteria and the length of the observation period are essential factors influencing the results of treatment of maxillary sinusitis. In 198 patients (244 sinuses) with chronic maxillary sinusitis of either rhinogenous or dental etiology all patients were judged as cured or improved at the short-term control 1-3 months after completion of therapy. The long-term observation (mean 3.5 years) revealed different figures of healing. Satisfactory results after conservative therapy were seen in only 34% while the Caldwell-Luc operation gave good results in 80%. In sinusitis of dental or
