Exploring the dynamics of stability and lumbar proprioception in hypermobility syndrome: a comparative and mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: HMS is characterized by excessive joint mobility, presenting various physical and psychological challenges. Understanding the interplay between these factors is essential for effective HMS management. This study aimed to examine differences in Limits of Stability (LOS) and lumbar proprioception between Hypermobility Syndrome (HMS) and control groups, explore correlations between LOS and proprioception errors, and understand the mediation effects of Kinesiophobia and fatigue on proprioception in HMS individuals. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 72 HMS patients and 72 control

The Relationship Between Magnesium Depletion Score and Kidney Stone Risk in Gout Patients: a Mediation Analysis.

This study investigated the association and mediating mechanisms between magnesium depletion score (MDS) and kidney stones (KDS) in gout patients through a cross-sectional analysis. Logistic regression analysis of 502 gout patients revealed a significant positive association between MDS grade and KDS (OR = 2.14, 95% CI: 1.78-2.58), with the risk remaining elevated in the MDS4 group after adjusting for confounders (OR = 6.25, 95% CI: 2.38-16.44).Causal mediation analysis indicated that MDS fully explained the effect of serum uric acid (SUA) on KDS, suggesting that disrupted magnesium metabolism

Causal relationship between diabetes mellitus and lung cancer: a two-sample Mendelian randomization and mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is the common comorbidity with lung cancer (LC), and metabolic disorders have been identified as significant contributors to the pathogenesis of both DM and LC. The causality between diabetes mellitus and lung cancer is still controversial. Hence, the causal effects of DM on the risk of LC was systemically investigated, and the mediating role of blood metabolites in this relationship was further explored. METHODS: This study utilized a comprehensive Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the association between diabetes mellitus and lung cancer

Association between parental phubbing and short-form video addiction: A moderated mediation analysis among Chinese adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Short-form video applications have spread rapidly and gained popularity among adolescents for their interactivity, sociality, and personalization. However, excessive and uncontrolled use has also caused some adolescents to develop short-form video addiction (SFVA). Although parental phubbing has been shown to be a risk factor for SFVA in adolescents, its intermediate mechanisms, particularly the emotional mediation mechanisms, remain unclear. Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationships among parental phubbing, SFVA, symptoms of depression and anxiety, and neuroticism in

Central corneal thickness and the risk of primary open-angle glaucoma: a Mendelian randomisation mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: The association of central corneal thickness (CCT) with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) remains uncertain. Although several observational studies assessing this relationship have reported an inverse association between CCT and POAG, this could be the result of collider bias. In this study, we leveraged human genetic data to assess through Mendelian randomisation (MR) the effect of CCT on POAG risk and whether this effect is mediated by intraocular pressure (IOP) changes. METHODS: We used 24 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with CCT (p value<5×10-8) from a genom

Underlying reasons for sex difference in survival following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: a mediation analysis.

AIMS: Previous studies have indicated a poorer survival among women following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), but the mechanisms explaining this difference remain largely uncertain. This study aimed to assess the survival after OHCA among women and men and explore the role of potential mediators, such as resuscitation characteristics, prior comorbidity, and socioeconomic factors. METHODS AND RESULTS: This was a population-based cohort study including emergency medical service-treated OHCA reported to the Swedish Registry for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in 2010-2020, linked to nationwi

Dos and don'ts for conducting mediation analysis: A commentary with practical tips to avoid common problems.

Purpose: Mediation analyses allow for exploration of causal mechanisms that explain how a predictor is related to an outcome. Tests of mediation are fundamental to addressing some of the most consequential questions in rehabilitation science. In recent decades, the development of easy-to-use analytical tools has made conducting statistical tests of mediation more accessible to researchers. Unfortunately, there are persistent problems in the conceptual underpinning of many tests of mediation. Even in cases where the statistical analyses are correctly run, problems with the underlying rationale

Relationships among the gut microbiome, brain networks, and symptom severity in schizophrenia patients: A mediation analysis.

The microbiome-gut-brain axis (MGBA) plays a critical role in schizophrenia (SZ). However, the underlying mechanisms of the interactions among the gut microbiome, brain networks, and symptom severity in SZ patients remain largely unknown. Fecal samples, structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) scores were collected from 38 SZ patients and 38 normal controls, respectively. The data of 16S rRNA gene sequencing were used to analyze the abundance of gut microbiome and the analysis of human brain networks was applied to comput

Motor impulsivity and spicy food craving: A mediation analysis of insula-based resting state functional connectivity.

In China, the rate of spicy food consumption is rising, and chili pepper is among the most popular spicy foods consumed nationwide. However, little effort has been made to understand the mechanism behind spicy food craving. This exploratory study aimed to investigate differences in insula-based resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) between spicy food cravers and non-cravers, and the association between rsFC, impulsivity and spicy food craving. A group of extreme cravers (n = 49) and a group of age- and sex-matched non-cravers (n = 46) completed a resting-state fMRI scan, during which pa

Mediation and longitudinal analysis to interpret the association between clozapine pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenomics, and absolute neutrophil count.

Clozapine is effective at reducing symptoms of treatment-resistant schizophrenia, but it can also induce several adverse outcomes including neutropenia and agranulocytosis. We used linear mixed-effect models and structural equation modelling to determine whether pharmacokinetic and genetic variables influence absolute neutrophil count in a longitudinal UK-based sample of clozapine users not currently experiencing neutropenia (N = 811). Increased daily clozapine dose was associated with elevated neutrophil count, amounting to a 133 cells/mm3 rise per standard deviation increase in clozapine dos

Self-efficacy as a Mechanism of Action of Imagery Rehearsal Therapy's Effectiveness: An Exploratory Mediation Analysis.

Imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT) is an empirically validated therapy targeting recurring nightmares, for which the mechanisms of action remain poorly understood. The objective of this study was to investigate how an exploratory measure of self-efficacy could mediate IRT's effectiveness. Thirty-five victims of sexual assault with recurring nightmares were randomly assigned to either IRT or a control condition. Participants completed questionnaires about self-efficacy and nocturnal symptoms at pre- and posttreatment. Regression analyses showed that IRT predicted greater self-efficacy about dreams

The effects of improving sleep on mental health (OASIS): a randomised controlled trial with mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sleep difficulties might be a contributory causal factor in the occurrence of mental health problems. If this is true, improving sleep should benefit psychological health. We aimed to determine whether treating insomnia leads to a reduction in paranoia and hallucinations. METHODS: We did this single-blind, randomised controlled trial (OASIS) at 26 UK universities. University students with insomnia were randomly assigned (1:1) with simple randomisation to receive digital cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for insomnia or usual care, and the research team were masked to the treatme
