The Prevalence and Level of Awareness of Medication Overuse Headache in Qassim Province, Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction Medication overuse headache (MOH) is a secondary headache caused by regular overuse of medication(s) intended to relieve (notably, not prevent) the symptoms of a pre-existing primary headache (most commonly, migraine and tension headaches). MOH places a considerable burden on both patients and society. Understandably, the disorder is the subject of many cross-sectional studies worldwide. Research on MOH in Qassim province, Saudi Arabia, however, has not been conducted; therefore, the present study aims to identify the prevalence and level of awareness of MOH in Qassim province. Me

FRAMES protocol versus simple advice for medication-overuse headache: a prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial.

It is central to the management of patients with Medication-overuse headache that they reverse their behavior regarding the frequent use of pain medication. The objective of this study was to compare two counseling techniques for treating patients with Medication-overuse headache (MOH). This was a randomized, blind, controlled clinical trial that compared a structured (FRAMES) and unstructured counseling, for the treatment of MOH. Patients were assessed before the counseling and then again four and eight weeks after it. Semi-structured interview, headache diary, the Headache Impact Test (HIT-6

Low-dose methadone for refractory chronic migraine accompanied by medication-overuse headache: a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: A refractory chronic migraine (RCM) accompanied by medication-overuse headache (MOH) is an extremely disabling disease. Evidence suggests that in selected patients, chronic opioids may be a valuable therapeutic option for RCM. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of prophylaxis with low-dose methadone (LDM) in patients affected by RCM with continuous headache and MOH. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was performed between May 2012 and November 2015 at the Headache Center and Toxicology Unit of the Careggi University Hospital. Eligible patien

Prevalence of chronic headache with and without medication overuse: associations with socioeconomic position and physical and mental health status.

Near-daily intake of acute symptomatic medication for frequent headache increases the risk for medication-overuse headache (MOH). Chronic headache (CH) and MOH prevalences are inversely related to socioeconomic position (SEP). It is not known how SEP influences the health status of people with these headaches. This cross-sectional study examined the prevalence of CH in Denmark; possible associations between CH and education, work status, and income; and the health status of people with CH across socioeconomic strata. A total of 129,150 individuals aged ⩾ 16 years were invited to the 2010 Danis

Overuse of psychotropic medications among children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders: perspective from a developing country.

Psychopharmacotherapy can be an effective part of the treatment for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). However debate continues over the potential benefits and costs of these treatments; additionally little is known about the pattern of psychotropic medication use in developing countries. We aimed to survey the use of psychotropic medication, their subcategories and its associations among a representative local sample of 345 Iranian pupils with ASDs. All required information about demographics as well as clinical and medication history of children was collected through intervie

Improving diagnostic testing and reducing overuse of antibiotics for children with pharyngitis: a useful role for the electronic medical record.

BACKGROUND: Because of rising resistance to antibiotics, appropriate use of antibiotics is an important measure of quality of care. The purpose of this study was to use an electronic medical record (EMR) to assess use of diagnostic testing and of antibiotics for pharyngitis in a pediatric outpatient setting and to target areas for improvement. METHODS: Using data retrieved from the EMR, we analyzed visits from March 1, 2001 to February 28, 2002 for children 3 to 18 years old diagnosed with pharyngitis. We determined the proportion of episodes with a diagnostic test for group A streptococci, t

Neuroimaging differences between chronic migraine with and without medication overuse headache: a 7 Tesla multimodal MRI study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic migraine (CM) patients with medication overuse headache (MOH) exhibit distinct neurobiological alterations compared to those without MOH. However, prior studies, often limited to single imaging modalities, have yielded inconsistent findings. This study employs multimodal MRI-combining structural, diffusion tensor, and functional imaging-to characterize brain abnormalities in CM patients with and without MOH, while investigating the relationship between acute analgesic use frequency and these changes. METHODS: The study employed comparative analyses to examine differences i

Altered expressions of CGRP, SULT1A1, HMGB1, and HIF-1α in the trigeminal ganglion in medication overuse headache in female rats.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Medication-overuse headache (MOH) is a female-predominant secondary headache generally associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug overuse and chronification of migraine. MOH is associated with elevated serum levels of inflammatory and nociceptive molecules and intestinal leak in migraine patients. We aimed to characterize the changes in expression patterns of high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) and hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α) in the trigeminal ganglion cells, thereby offering new insights into the molecular mechanisms contributing to MOH. METHODS: MOH was

Association between Body Mass Index and Medication-Overuse Headache among Individuals with Migraine: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Medication-overuse headache (MOH) is a secondary chronic headache disorder that occurs in individuals with a pre-existing primary headache disorder, particularly migraine disorder. Obesity is often combined with chronic daily headaches and is considered a risk factor for the transformation of episodic headaches into chronic headaches. However, the association between obesity and MOH among individuals with migraine has rarely been studied. The present study explored the association between body mass index (BMI) and MOH in people living with migraine. METHODS: This cross-sectional

Central sensitization mechanisms in chronic migraine with medication overuse headache: a study of thalamocortical activation and lateral cortical inhibition.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether cortical hyperexcitability in chronic migraine with medication overuse headache (CM-MOH) is due to increased thalamocortical drive or aberrant cortical inhibitory mechanisms. METHODS: Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) were performed by electrical stimulation of the median nerve (M), ulnar nerve (U) and simultaneous stimulation of both nerves (MU) in 27 patients with CM-MOH and, for comparison, in 23 healthy volunteers (HVs) of a comparable age distribution. We calculated the degree of cortical lateral inhibition using the formula: 100 - [MU/(M + U) × 100

Burden of migraine with acute medication overuse or psychiatric comorbidities and treatment with CGRP pathway-targeted monoclonal antibodies: A review.

Migraine is a complex and often debilitating neurological disease that affects more than 1 billion people worldwide. It is characterized by moderate-to-intense, throbbing headache attacks that are worsened by activity and is associated with nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine, ranked the second leading cause of years lived with disability by the World Health Organization, can diminish patients' quality of life and bring significant personal and economic burden. Furthermore, migraine patients with a history of acute medication overuse (AMO) or psychiatric comorbiditie
