Although dogs are considered the main reservoir of Leishmania infantum infection in endemic areas in Europe, the existence of other wild vertebrate reservoirs has been proposed as a possible cause of the lack of success of control measures. Evidence of L. infantum infection in European wildlife has been reported in carnivores, lagomorphs, and rodents. The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) received most attention, probably due to its taxonomic relationship with the dog and because it is the most abundant wild carnivore in Europe. Foxes and other wild carnivores often displayed high prevalences of infecti

Due to its strong association with Ankylosing Spondylitis and the other Spondyloarthropathies, the HLA-B27 family of alleles and, in particular, the ancestral HLA-B*2705, has been the object of numerous studies. More recently, some novel interesting features have emerged such as the ability of HLA-B27 to confer resistance to the progression of HIV infection and to promote a spontaneous CD8+ T cell-mediated viral clearance of HCV. The co-occurrence of these protective and pathogenic features suggests a common ground, i.e. to promote a more pronounced immune/inflammatory response leading to an e

Cyanobacteria are often the dominant phototrophs in polar freshwater communities; yet, the phages that infect them remain unknown. Here, we present a genomic and morphological characterization of cyanophage S-EIV1 that was isolated from freshwaters on Ellesmere Island (Nunavut, High Arctic Canada), and which infects the polar Synechococcus sp., strain PCCC-A2c. S-EIV1 represents a newly discovered evolutionary lineage of bacteriophages whose representatives are widespread in aquatic systems. Among the 130 predicted open reading frames (ORFs) there is no recognizable similarity to genes that en

The clear seasonality of varicella infections in temperate regions suggests the influence of meteorologic conditions. However, there are very few data on this association. The aim of this study was to determine the seasonal pattern of varicella infections on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca (Spain), and its association with meteorologic conditions and schooling. Data on the number of cases of varicella were obtained from the Network of Epidemiologic Surveillance, which is composed of primary care physicians who notify varicella cases on a compulsory basis. From 1995 to 2012, varicella case

Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is a serum protein that activates the complement and mediates phagocytosis. MBL levels and MBL2 genotype may impact upon host susceptibility to tuberculosis (TB) disease but evidence to date has been conflicting. MBL2 exon 1 and promoter genotyping and serum MBL concentrations were determined in 79 patients with active tuberculosis (58 pulmonary TB and 21 extrapulmonary or miliary TB) and 120 household healthy contacts (HHC) from a Mediterranean area (Majorca Island, Spain). Significantly higher serum MBL levels were found in patients with active tuberculosis than

Werner syndrome (WS; MIM#277700) or adult progeria, is a rare disease, associated with mutations of a single gene (RECQL2 or WRN), located on chromosome 8 (8p12). It codes a DNA-helicase, whose defects cause genomic instability. The highest incidences are reported in Japan and Sardinia (Italy). On this major island of the Mediterranean Basin, the WS cases have been observed in the northern areas. The authors describe the apparently first case reported in southern Sardinia, a 51-year-old woman, who was born in and resides in the province of Cagliari. She presented with a 9-year history of an in

Tetrathyridia of Mesocestoides sp. were collected from the body cavities of the shrews (Insectivora), Crocidura russula, in Valencia, Spain and Crocidura suaveolens on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, France. Specimens were processed by routine microscopic and histological techniques, including examination with brightfield, phase-contrast, and differential-interference-contrast optics. Most tetrathyridia were clustered together inside host-derived fibrotic capsules, but some occurred free in the body cavity. All specimens examined from both locations had solid hindbodies, i.e., lacking a p

The author concisely presents the results of his 30-year investigations about the harmful influence of the higher sun radiation on the eyes. The investigations were carried out among the population of the Island of Rab, situated in the northern part of the Adriatic sea. This geographical region has been characterized by higher doses of the global sun radiation compared with the remaining part of the Republic of Croatia, and partly with the rest of the Mediterranean. The author proved it by his own measurements of UV-B, UV-A and the global sun radiation. The number of the diseased from the macu

Metabolic syndrome (MS), a constellation of metabolic risk factors associated with development of cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 diabetes (T2D), has emerged as a public health problem of enormous proportions in developed and developing countries. We have reported previously its prevalence in several island populations of the Eastern Adriatic coast of Croatia. In spite of leading a relatively traditional life style pattern including adherence to a Mediterranean diet, the prevalence of MS in these populations is high and comparable to that in developed nations. However, data on prevalence of

Alterations in affinity of amyloid for Congo red after incubation of tissue sections with potassium permanganate, as described by Wright el al, were studied. The affinity of amyloid for Congo red after incubation with potassium permanganate did not change in patients with myeloma-associated amyloidosis, familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy, medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, pancreatic island amyloid, and cerebral amyloidosis. Affinity for Congo red was lost after incubation with potassium permanganate in tissue sections from patients with secondary amyloidosis and amyloidosis complicating fam

Tick-borne diseases are a growing public health concern in the Mediterranean. Brijuni National Park (BNP), a unique, highly visited island ecosystem characterized by increased large game host density and diverse Mediterranean habitats, presents an elevated risk for pathogen co-circulation. This study addresses the lack of spatial and epidemiological data to accurately assess human exposure risk in this environment. We performed a detailed geospatial and epidemiological risk mapping of pathogen co-circulation in BNP. A total of 587 hard ticks were collected across 26 georeferenced micro-locatio

Certain lymphoproliferative disorders (Burkitt's lymphoma, tropical splenomegaly, and Mediterranean lymphoma) are more frequently observed in the tropical or subtropical areas than in other parts of the world. The polymicrobial exposure of human beings in those areas to viral, bacterial and protozoal infections led to the assumption of a specific connection between these conditions and the lymphoproliferative disease. Some evidence has accumulated that the Epstein-Barr virus might be an oncogenic virus connected with the development of Burkitt's lymphoma. Repeated plasmodial infections were mo

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) caused by Leishmania infantum is endemic in the Mediterranean basin with most of the infected human patients remaining asymptomatic. Recently, the saurian-associated Leishmania tarentolae was detected in human blood donors and in sheltered dogs. The circulation of L. infantum and L. tarentolae was investigated in humans, dogs and cats living in the Pelagie islands (Sicily, Italy) by multiple serological and molecular testing. Human serum samples (n = 346) were tested to assess the exposure to L. infantum by immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT), enzyme-linked immu

Within each of the four species groups of Bulinus there are species that act as intermediate hosts for one or more of the seven species of schistosomes in the Schistosoma haematobium group, which includes the important human pathogens S. haematobium and S. intercalatum. Bulinus species have an extensive distribution throughout much of Africa and some surrounding islands including Madagascar, parts of the Middle East and the Mediterranean region. Considerable variation in intermediate host specificity can be found and differences in compatibility between snail and parasite can be observed over

Variation in 815bp of mitochondrial DNA from two gene fragments (300bp of cytochrome b and 395-515bp of 12S rRNA) for 26 Malpolon monspessulanus, and cytochrome b for a further 21 individuals, indicates that this species originated in the Maghreb area of Northwest Africa. Here, an estimated 3.5-6Mya, it divided into the western M. m. monspessulanus, and an eastern clade including M. m. insignitus and M. m. fuscus. The very limited genetic differentiation between Maghreb and Southwest European populations of this form suggests that it arrived in the Iberian Peninsula only recently. Population g

Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV; family Bunyaviridae, genus Tospovirus) has a wide host range, with onion (Allium cepa L.) being one of the most economically important hosts. The first report of IYSV in Spain was from Albacete in 2003 (1) followed by the Canary Islands in 2005. In November of 2006, disease symptoms suspected to be caused by IYSV were observed on the central and outer leaves of commercial leeks plants (cvs. Asthow, Edison, and Shelton) from Alicante, Spain. Symptoms consisted of dry, white-to-straw-colored, spindle-shaped, irregular chlorotic and necrotic lesions on the leaves. Ti

From January 2001 to December 2003 blood specimens obtained from 323 European and extra-European young immigrants were collected for the determination of anti-polio antibody levels. They were sent to the Section of Hygiene, Department of Public Health, by the Local Health Authorities. A neutralization assay was performed to detect the anti-polio antibodies against serotypes 1, 2 and 3, using rhesus monkey kidney cells. The results showed 98,1% prevalence of anti-polio 1 antibodies (titre > or =1:2), 99,1% of anti-polio 2, and 98,8% prevalence of anti-polio 3 antibodies. The seronegativity agai

BACKGROUND: The high variety of mutations found in the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Regulator (CFTR) gene is responsible for the clinical heterogeneity observed in people with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and the atypical manifestations in CFTR-related disorders (CFTR-RD). The intronic c.489+3A>G (c.621+3A>G) variant has been reported to have questionable pathogenicity, although its alleged severity was probably due to its co-segregation in cis with another undetected mutation, as previously reported from countries in the Mediterranean region. In the island of Cyprus, several rare CFTR variants have

BACKGROUND: Dirofilariosis, caused by Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens, is expanding across Europe because of climate change, raising veterinary and zoonotic concerns. Among over 70 mosquito species considered to be implicated in their transmission, Culex pipiens and Aedes albopictus are recognized as major vectors. In Sardinia, where canine dirofilariosis is endemic, entomological information on Dirofilaria circulation was previously lacking. This study investigated mosquito species composition and assessed the presence of D. immitis and D. repens across five sites on the island.
