Contribution of left supramarginal and angular gyri to episodic memory encoding: An intracranial EEG study.

The role of the left ventral lateral parietal cortex (VPC) in episodic memory is hypothesized to include bottom-up attentional orienting to recalled items, according to the dual-attention model (Cabeza et al., 2008). However, its role in memory encoding could be further clarified, with studies showing both positive and negative subsequent memory effects (SMEs). Furthermore, few studies have compared the relative contributions of sub-regions in this functionally heterogeneous area, specifically the anterior VPC (supramarginal gyrus/BA40) and the posterior VPC (angular gyrus/BA39), on a within-s

Examining the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on human episodic memory with machine learning.

We aimed to replicate a published effect of transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS)-induced recognition enhancement over the human ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) and analyse the data with machine learning. We investigated effects over an adjacent region, the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). In total, we analyzed data from 97 participants after exclusions. We found weak or absent effects over the VLPFC and DLPFC. We conducted machine learning studies to examine the effects of semantic and phonetic features on memorization, which revealed no effect of VLPFC tDCS on the ori

Does tDCS over prefrontal cortex improve episodic memory retrieval? Potential importance of time of day.

We report 4 experiments aiming to replicate and extend the finding that anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over dorsolateral prefrontal cortex after encoding and just prior to retrieval improves accuracy on an episodic recollection task. Our first 3 experiments failed to replicate the tDCS effect in planned analyses, but post-hoc analyses uncovered tDCS effects on recollection accuracy during morning sessions. To further investigate, Experiment 4 randomly assigned participants to morning or afternoon sessions. As predicted, tDCS (compared to sham stimulation) improved recoll

Deficits in episodic memory are related to uncontrolled eating in a sample of healthy adults.

Despite a substantial amount of animal data linking deficits in memory inhibition to the development of overeating and obesity, few studies have investigated the relevance of memory inhibition to uncontrolled eating in humans. Further, although memory for recent eating has been implicated as an important contributor to satiety and energy intake, the possibility that variations in episodic memory relate to individual differences in food intake control has been largely neglected. To examine these relationships, we recruited ninety-three adult subjects to attend a single lab session where we asse

Elevated levels of serum cholesterol are associated with better performance on tasks of episodic memory.

We examined how serum cholesterol, an established risk factor for cerebrovascular disease (CVD), relates to cognitive function in healthy middle-older aged individuals with no neurologic or CVD history. A complete lipid panel was obtained from a cohort of one hundred twenty individuals, ages 43-85, who also underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological examination. In order to reduce the number of variables and empirically identify broad cognitive domains, scores from neuropsychological tests were submitted into a factor analysis. This analysis revealed three explainable factors: Memory, Execut

Characterising neural signatures of successful aging: Electrophysiological correlates of preserved episodic memory in older age.

While aging is associated with a gradual decline in memory, substantial preservation of function is observed in certain individuals and dissecting this heterogeneity is paramount to understanding successful aging. A cohort of elderly individuals were classified according to their level of memory preservation and administered a test of episodic memory in which participants were cued to learn or simply read each word and then to identify previously presented items in a delayed recognition phase. Mathematical modelling revealed that relatively preserved memory function was specifically linked to

Prospective and episodic memory in relation to hippocampal volume in adults with spina bifida myelomeningocele.

The present study examined prospective and episodic memory in relation to age, functional independence, and hippocampal volume in younger to middle-aged adults with spina bifida myelomeningocele (SBM) and typically developing (TD) adults. Prospective and episodic memory, as well as hippocampal volume, was reduced in adults with SBM relative to TD adults. Neither memory performance nor hippocampal volume showed greater decrements in older adults. Lower hippocampal volume was associated with reduced prospective memory in adults with SBM, and this relation was specific to the hippocampus and not

Brain activation patterns during visual episodic memory processing among first-degree relatives of schizophrenia subjects.

Episodic memory deficits are proposed as a potential intermediate phenotype of schizophrenia. We examined deficits in visual episodic memory and associated brain activation differences among early course schizophrenia (n=22), first-degree relatives (n=16) and healthy controls without personal or family history of psychotic disorders (n=28). Study participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging on a 3T scanner while performing visual episodic memory encoding and retrieval task. We examined in-scanner behavioral performance evaluating response time and accuracy of performance. Whole

Abnormal insula functional network is associated with episodic memory decline in amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

Abnormalities of functional connectivity in the default mode network (DMN) recently have been reported in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD) or other psychiatric diseases. As such, these abnormalities may be epiphenomena instead of playing a causal role in AD progression. To date, few studies have investigated specific brain networks, which extend beyond the DMN involved in the early AD stages, especially in aMCI. The insula is one site affected by early pathological changes in AD and is a crucial hub of the human brain networks. Currently, we exp

Episodic memory in dementia: Characteristics of new learning that differentiate Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and Parkinson's diseases.

Differences in the memory characteristics of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), Huntington's disease (HD), and Parkinson's disease (PD) were investigated with tests that assess learning and retention of words, line-drawn objects, and locations. Large groups of AD, HD, and PD patients were administered the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R) and the Hopkins Board (HB). Eight learning and memory measures were subjected to discriminant function analysis. A 91% classification accuracy was achieved for the separation of cortical and subcortical dementias and 79% accuracy for the disc

[Self-reference effect and episodic memory in normal aging and Alzheimer's disease: myth or reality?].

The Self is defined as a dynamic structure of self-referent-cognitive processes and a set of multidimensional representations stored in memory. This paper aims to explore the links between the Self and memorization of information, thus we propose to review the Self-reference effect (SRE) on memory processes and its neural basis in young and older adults. The literature reports a strong benefit from self-referencing on the encoding and retrieval processes in episodic memory. Indeed, the individuals demonstrate a better retention of information previously processed in relation with their preexis

Episodic memory in adults with autistic spectrum disorders: recall for self- versus other-experienced events.

People with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) have difficulties in recalling recently experienced events, which is dependent upon intact functioning of several aspects of 'self awareness'. The current study examined impaired episodic recall in ASD and its relationship to specific impairments in aspects of 'self awareness'. Between-group (participants with learning disabilities with and without autistic spectrum disorder) experimental design examining free and cued recall of table-top activities that were either self-experienced by participants or observed being performed by the experimenter. Exploring Memory Systems After Pediatric Posterior Fossa Tumor: From Memory Profile Comparisons in Nonirradiated Versus Irradiated Patients to Episodic Memory Tests Capable of Detecting Radiation-induced Hippocampal Damage.

AIMS: Pediatric posterior fossa tumor (PFT) survivors experience long-term cognitive sequelae, including memory disorders, for which irradiation is one of the main risk factors. The aims of the present study were to (1) explore the profile of impairment in episodic, semantic, working and procedural memory systems in irradiated versus nonirradiated PFT survivors, and (2) test whether an autobiographical questionnaire and a two-phase ecological test (Epireal) assessing episodic memory are more sensitive to radiation-induced hippocampal damage than commonly used tests. Longitudinal evaluation of hippocampal subfields volumes and episodic memory in breast cancer patients and healthy controls.

Despite previous reports of hippocampal alterations in breast cancer patients, the structural evolution of hippocampal subfields in relationship with memory remains to be characterized in this population. We aimed to measure hippocampal subfield volumes and their links with memory performances before and after chemotherapy in breast cancer patients compared to healthy controls. Forty-two middle aged women were evaluated, including 19 patients assessed before (T1), one-month (T2) and one-year (T3) after chemotherapy, and 23 controls assessed at T1 and T3. Using high-resolution MRI, hippocampal

Cortical thickness in perirhinal area BA35 predicts adaptive episodic memory-guided decision making in older adults.

OBJECTIVES: To make adaptive decisions, it is often necessary to retrieve episodic memories, for example, about whether an item was previously associated with reward. Compared to young adults, older adults are impaired at making adaptive episodic memory-based choices. There are substantial individual differences across older adults, however. In this study, we examined whether hippocampal volume or extrahippocampal cortical thickness in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) is associated with better episodic memory-based decision making in cognitively unimpaired older adults. METHODS: Older adults (n

Deficits in episodic memory and executive functions in relation to CB1 receptor availability in Parkinson's disease.

BackgroundThe endocannabinoid system (ECS) is important for several neurophysiological functions, including the regulation of emotions and cognitive processes. The most abundant brain cannabinoid receptor is cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1R). Several preclinical studies in Parkinson's disease (PD) models suggest that modulating CB1R may impact cognitive processing. However, there are very limited studies of the relation between CB1R and cognitive processing in PD patients.ObjectiveTo explore the relationship between CB1R availability and cognitive dysfunction in PD with [18F]FMPEP-d2 positron

Slow semantic learning in the cerebral cortex, and its relation to the hippocampal episodic memory system.

A key question is how new semantic representations are formed in the human brain and how this may benefit from the hippocampal episodic memory system. Here, we describe the major effective connectivity between the hippocampal memory system and the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) semantic memory system in humans. Then, we present and model a theory of how semantic representations may be formed in the human ATL using slow associative learning in semantic attractor networks that receive inputs from the hippocampal episodic memory system. The hypothesis is that if one category of semantic representat

Emotional Arousal-Induced Episodic Memory Benefits Are Attenuated in Autism Spectrum Disorders, Especially in Older Age.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder associated with episodic memory impairment. Although emotional factors such as arousal, as well as age and depression symptoms, are known to influence episodic memory in neurotypical (NT) populations, how these factors affect memory processes in ASD, which is associated with a higher prevalence of depression, remains unclear. In this large-scale online study, 326 adults (ages 18-67) with or without ASD (n = 163 per group) and varying levels of depressive symptoms rated their experienced arousal of positive, negative, and ne

Tau PET Burden Is Associated With Hippocampal Microstructure and Episodic Memory in Amyloid Positive Older Adults.

Growing evidence suggests that hippocampal gray matter microstructure, assessed through diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), is a sensitive marker of neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD). While hippocampal atrophy is a characteristic feature of AD, microstructural changes likely precede macrostructural changes such as volumetric loss, offering important insights into the early phases of the disease. This study assessed the relationships between hippocampal microstructure (assessed with mean diffusivity [MD] from DWI) and Braak-staged tau burden (measured by positron emission tomography [
