OBJECTIVE: To explore potential associations between proinflammatory cytokines in synovial fluid and progression of osteoarthritis (OA) in meniscectomized subjects.
DESIGN: We studied 132 subjects on average 18 years after meniscectomy, with a second examination 4-10 years later. We measured concentrations of interleukin (IL)-6, -8 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α by multiplex immunoassay, graded radiographic features of tibiofemoral and patellofemoral OA according to the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) atlas, scored patient-reported outcomes using the Knee Injury and O

Degenerative meniscus tears (DMTs) are prevalent findings in osteoarthritic knees, yet current treatment is mostly limited to arthroscopic partial meniscectomy rather than regeneration, which further exacerbates arthritic changes. Translational research regarding meniscus regeneration is hindered by the complex, composite nature of the meniscus which exhibit a gradient from inner cartilage-like tissue to outer fibrous tissue, as well as engineering hurdles often requiring growth factors and cross-linking agents. Here, a meniscus zonal tissue gradient is proposed using zone-specific decellulari

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Psychological responses to the initial injury and rehabilitation might be an important additional determinant of functional level outcomes after knee surgery. The objectives of this study were (1) to measure pain catastrophizing and kinesiophobia levels and (2) determine their association with self-reported subjective knee function during rehabilitation, following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and meniscectomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved 41 participants. The levels of catastrophizing (Pain Catastrophizing Scale [PCS]), kinesiophobia

OBJECTIVES: (i) To provide baseline knowledge of gene expression in macroscopically normal articular cartilage, (ii) to test the hypothesis that age, body-mass-index (BMI), and sex are associated with cartilage RNA transcriptome, and (iii) to predict individuals at potential risk for developing "pre-osteoarthritis" (OA) based on screening of genetic risk-alleles associated with OA and gene transcripts differentially expressed between normal and OA cartilage.
DESIGN: Healthy-appearing cartilage was obtained from the medial femoral notch of 12 knees with a meniscus tear undergoing arthroscopic

INTRODUCTION: Reduced self-efficacy and high kinesiophobia levels affect recovery after arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. Video-based patient education represents an alternative approach to in-person education to support postoperative management and home-based rehabilitation in these patients. The study investigated whether preoperative video-based patient education was non-inferior to postoperative in-person education on pain-related self-efficacy and assessed the effects of such an approach on disability and fear of movement in patients undergoing arthroscopic partial meniscectomy.

PURPOSE: Partial meniscectomy is a common orthopedic procedure intended to improve knee pain and function in patients with irreparable meniscal tears. However, 6-25% of partial meniscectomy patients experience persistent knee pain after surgery. In this randomized controlled trial (RCT) involving subjects with knee pain following partial meniscectomy, it was hypothesized that treatment with a synthetic medial meniscus replacement (MMR) implant provides significantly greater improvements in knee pain and function compared to non-surgical care alone.
METHODS: In this prospective, multicenter RC

PURPOSE: Common radiologic scores to evaluate knee osteoarthritis (OA) have been widely used but are descriptive and may lack objectivity. The aim of this study was to develop a quantitative and objective radiologic measure for the evaluation of lateral knee compartment OA. Furthermore, we tested the reliability of this new measure and its correlation to well-accepted radiologic scores.
METHODS: This retrospective study was performed within the context of a multi-centre long-term follow-up (15-25 years) of a patient cohort after partial or total lateral meniscectomy (n = 36 knees). In additio

BACKGROUND: In patients with a degenerative tear of the medial meniscus, recent meta-analyses and systematic reviews have shown no treatment benefit of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) over conservative treatment or placebo surgery. Yet, advocates of APM still argue that APM is cost effective. Giving advocates of APM their due, we note that there is evidence from the treatment of other musculoskeletal complaints to suggest that a treatment may prove cost effective even in the absence of improvements in efficacy outcomes, as it may lead to other benefits, such as diminished productivity

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of age itself on the joint survivorship after arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) for degenerative medial meniscus tears (DMTs).
METHODS: Patients undergoing APM for DMTs during 1999-2010 were retrospectively reviewed. The inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) DMTs identified on preoperative MRI scans, (2) no definite history of trauma, and (3) follow-up duration more than 5 years. In evaluation of the joint survivorship, the endpoint was defined as conversion to arthroplasty (or realignment osteotomy) or progression to Kellgren-Lawrence grade 4. The stud

BACKGROUND: Awareness of the value of aquatic exercise (AE) in the postoperative rehabilitation has increased, and several inherent advantages of AE, such as adjustment of both resistance and muscle strengthening parameters makes good rationale for its inclusion in postoperative rehabilitation. This study aimed to determine and compare the benefits of AE and land-based exercise (LBE) on pain, functionality, and quality of life after arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM).
METHODS: This randomized controlled study included 30 middle-aged (35-50), physically active patients who were randomized

INTRODUCTION: While open repair of horizontal meniscal tears in young active patients has shown good results at mid- and long-term follow-up, complex horizontal tears (cleavage associated with meniscal flaps) are often treated by arthroscopic subtotal meniscectomy. The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term outcomes after arthroscopic removal of meniscal flaps associated with an open meniscal repair for treating complex lesions in young active patients. The hypothesis was that this salvage procedure would be efficient in such rare cases.
METHODS: Fourteen patients underwent an arthroscop

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether unstable chondral lesions observed during arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM) require treatment. We examined differences at 1 year with respect to knee pain and other outcomes between patients who had debridement (CL-Deb) and those who had observation (CL-noDeb) of unstable chondral lesions encountered during APM.
METHODS: Patients who were ≥30 years old and undergoing APM were randomized to receive debridement (CL-Deb group; n = 98) or observation (CL-noDeb; n = 92) of unstable Outerbridge grade-II, III, or IV chondral lesions. Outcomes were evaluated pr

BACKGROUND: Few studies exist that evaluate the effect of partial medial meniscectomy in knees with intact anterior cruciate ligaments.
HYPOTHESIS: Partial meniscectomy of bucket-handle medial meniscus tears will cause joint space narrowing.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: Between 1982 and 2001, 135 patients met the study criteria of a partial medial meniscectomy, intact ligaments, no surgery to the contralateral knee, and no chondromalacia greater than grade II. Seventy-nine patients living within 150 miles of the clinic were asked to return for physical examinati

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a major global health burden marked by progressive cartilage degeneration and chronic pain with intertwined inflammatory and neuropathic mechanisms. This study compared three rat OA models, monosodium iodoacetate (MIA), medial meniscal transection (MMT), and partial medial meniscectomy (MNX), to assess their translational value, suitability for pharmaceutical research, and identify the most robust and reproducible model for preclinical OA pain research. OA was induced in male Wistar (MIA) or Sprague Dawley (MMT, MNX) rats, and pain progression was evaluated by testing me

A partial lateral meniscectomy procedure has been developed for the induction of a predictable and reproducible degenerative joint disease in knees of rabbits. The procedure adopted involves section of the fibular collateral and sesamoid ligaments and removal of 4-5 mm of the anterior lateral meniscus. In most experiments the animals are killed and tissues obtained for histologic examination at 6 weeks. Section of the ligaments alone (with or without penetration of the joint space) did not result in significant pathologic change. Significant degeneration was observed in tibial and femoral cart
