Sexual minorities are disproportionately affected by mental health problems (e.g., depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, suicidality). Minority stress theory and the psychological mediation framework have become the predominant conceptual models used to explain these disparities, and they have led to substantial advances in research on stigma-related stress and mental health. However, the field's reliance on these models has limited the extent to which other theories have been considered as potential frameworks for further advancing our understanding of sexual minority mental health. BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction is common in mental disorders and represents a potential risk factor in childhood. The nature and extent of associations between childhood cognitive function and polygenic risk for mental disorders is unclear. We applied computational modeling to gain insight into mechanistic processes underlying decision making and working memory in childhood and their associations with polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for mental disorders and comorbid cardiometabolic diseases.
METHODS: We used the drift diffusion model to infer latent computational processes underlying decision

INTRODUCTION: Neuropsychological abnormalities in transsexual patients have been reported in comparison with subjects without gender identity disorder (GID), suggesting differences in underlying neurobiological processes. However, these results have not consistently been confirmed. Furthermore, studies on cognitive effects of cross-sex hormone therapy also yield heterogeneous results.
AIM: We hypothesized that untreated transsexual patients differ from men without GID in activation pattern associated with a mental rotation task and that these differences may further increase after commencing

AIMS: The aim of this study is to report on the neuropsychological aspects of teenage patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), namely disorders affecting attention, memory, the executive functions and language. We also discuss how to perform neuropsychological and functional evaluation of the systems involved in attention, by means of haemodynamic (functional magnetic resonance imaging) and neurophysiological (magnetoencephalography) techniques. The comorbidities that most frequently occur in teenage patients with ADHD are also described.
DEVELOPMENT: The fundamental sym

This paper will deal with the psychologic correlates of abnormal puberty and the implications for assessment and treatment. The main areas of adolescent behavior, equally relevant to the child who undergoes normal or abnormal puberty, are psychosexual development, psychopathology and mental functioning in terms of level of intelligence and cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Regarding psychosexual development, the important findings are that adolescents with precocious puberty tend to be somewhat earlier in starting their adolescent sex life, though they still remain within the normal range of

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are common among people with HIV (PWH) and are associated with poor HIV outcomes. Despite high unmet mental health needs among PWH, use of evidence-based mental health screening and treatment protocols remains limited at HIV treatment facilities across low-resource settings. Integrating mental health services into HIV care can reduce this gap. This study's objective was to explore factors that influence integration of mental health screening and treatment into HIV clinics in Cameroon.
METHODS: We analyzed 14 in-depth interviews with clinic staff supporting PWH at

International terrorism has become a major global concern. Several studies conducted in North America and Europe in the aftermath of terrorist attacks reveal that international terrorism represents a significant short-term and long-term threat to mental health. In the present article, the authors clarify the concept and categories of terrorism and then present central findings from studies conducted in the United States and Europe, which mainly focus on negative impacts on mental health, such as emotional stress and PTSD. Furthermore, the authors outline experiments that focus on social intera

Attention to affect is theoretically a precursor to one's ideal affect (i.e., preference for feeling low- and high-arousal positive and negative affect) and emotion regulation (ER). In schizotypy, there have been mixed findings regarding abnormalities in attention to affect. At the same time, little is known about ideal affect in schizotypy or whether differences in ideal affect or ER difficulties in schizotypy are driven by attention to affect. Thus, this study aimed to identify shared and unique abnormalities in attention to affect, ideal affect, and ER difficulties in schizotypy, and to tes

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about how physician diagnostic thinking unfolds over time when evaluating patients. We designed a case-based simulation to understand how physicians reason, create differential diagnoses, and employ strategies to achieve a correct diagnosis.
METHODS: Between June 2017 and August 2018, hospital medicine physicians at two academic medical centers were presented a standardized case of a patient presenting with chest pain who was ultimately diagnosed with herpes zoster using an interview format. Case information was presented in predetermined aliquots where participant

The hyper-systemizing theory of autism proposes that the systemizing mechanism is set too high in people with autism. As a result, they can only cope with highly lawful systems, and cannot cope with systems of high variance or change (such as the social world of other minds). They appear 'change-resistant'. This proposal extends the extreme male brain theory of autism. Finally, evidence is reviewed for autism being the genetic result of assortative mating of two high systemizers.

This review critically discusses the empirical evidence for information-processing biases in social phobia. Distortions in attention, interpretation, and memory processes are analyzed as they apply to individuals with social phobia. The literature provides evidence for a specific attentional bias towards socially threatening stimuli and a specific interpretational/judgment bias towards self-relevant social information. However, there is little evidence to suggest that social phobia is associated with a memory bias for socially threatening stimuli. Furthermore, the relationship between the empi

We report a 78-year-old right-handed man with integrative visual agnosia (Humphreys et al.) that was associated with bilateral medial occipito-temporal infarction. The patient showed superior altitudinal hemianopsia, alexia, prosopagnosia, cerebral achromatopsia, and object agnosia. Elementary perception and information processing supposed to be executed by the stream to the parietal lobe were intact, since he was able to perceive the position and speed of moving object (catching the flying ball). He could not categorize neither real objects nor line drawings by sight. However, copying and mat

Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) is one of the idiopathic generalized epilepsies with age-related onset. Myoclonic seizures of JME often occur on awakening. On the other hand, patients with reflex epilepsy, whose seizures are particularly induced by activating higher cognitive functions, are thought to belong to the same category. As to the seizure precipitating factors of these patients with JME, however, few studies have ever been made. In this study, clinical and electroencephalographic findings of 25 patients with JME, on whom "neuropsychological EEG activation" (NPA) was performed, were

Prevalences of anxiety, depression, and related mental health difficulties continue to rise across many high-income countries, while existing treatment services face growing pressures and limited capacity. Alongside formal psychological and pharmacological interventions, everyday behaviours that support mental health resilience warrant greater attention. An expanding evidence base shows that arts-based leisure activities-including participating in music, visual arts, dance, creative writing, and visiting cultural venues and performances-can produce meaningful psychological benefits for people

Preterm birth remains a global health challenge with significant implications for neonatal outcomes and parental mental health. This paper explores the complex psychological experiences and intrapersonal processes of parents after preterm birth, highlighting their heightened risk for mental health difficulties such as postpartum depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Existing mental health interventions are medicalised, primarily focusing on infant care. As a result, there is currently a lack of emotionally-focused interventions aimed at supporting parents after preter

Personality traits involving negative affect, as well as mental disorders including depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder, are cardiovascular risk factors. However, which of these confer risk independently is uncertain, and the implications of their overlap, combinations, and interactions are poorly understood. Potential explanatory mechanisms are being characterized with increasing detail and sophistication. Of particular interest are psychobiological processes initiated by stress. Other mechanisms involve stress-related health behaviors, and illness behaviors that delay or r

Goal-directed behavior requires integrated mental representations of perceptions and actions. The neurophysiological underpinnings of these processes, however, are not yet understood. It is particularly undetermined, which oscillatory activities in which brain regions are involved in the management of perception-action representations. We examine this question with a focus on response inhibition processes and show that the dynamics of perception-action representations reflected in theta band activity (TBA) are particularly evident in the supplementary motor area and the occipito-temporal corte

We describe a case of reflex seizures induced by abstract reasoning but not other cognitive processes. The patient, a 46-year-old man, experienced myoclonic seizures whenever he played shogi (Japanese chess). To identify the critical thought processes responsible for inducing his seizures, we monitored his clinical seizures and epileptiform discharges while he performed comprehensive neuropsychological tests, including the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R), spatial working memory, mental rotation, and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) tasks. A myoclonic seizure occurred only
