Menthol-Fatty Acid HDES Boosts In Vitro Oral Bioavailability of Oleanolic Acid via Synergistic Digestive Release and Cellular Absorption.

To improve the oral bioavailability of oleanolic acid (OA), this study developed a menthol-fatty acid-based hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (HDES) system. Through a comprehensive evaluation using in vitro simulated digestion and Caco-2 cell transport models, the short-chain HDES was found to increase the apparent in vitro bioavailability index of OA by 9.3-fold compared to conventional ethanol systems, with efficacy showing clear fatty acid chain-length dependence. The mechanism was systematically investigated through spectral characterization and cellular studies, revealing a two-stage enha

Menthol can be safely applied to improve thermal perception during physical exercise: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Menthol is often used as a cold-mimicking substance to allegedly enhance performance during physical activity, however menthol-induced activation of cold-defence responses during exercise can intensify heat accumulation in the body. This meta-analysis aimed at studying the effects of menthol on thermal perception and thermophysiological homeostasis during exercise. PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases were searched until May 2020. Menthol caused cooler thermal sensation by weighted mean difference (WMD) of - 1.65 (95% CI, - 2.96 to - 0.33) and tended to improve therma

Body Temperature and Discriminative Stimulus Effects of Nicotine and Menthol Aerosols in Male Rats: Role of α4β2 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors.

Menthol, a prevalent additive in tobacco and electronic cigarette products, has been reported to interact with nicotine at both neuropharmacological and behavioral levels. Although menthol alone is not reinforcing, converging evidence suggests that it may modulate the pharmacological and behavioral effects of nicotine through nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) mechanisms. Using an inhalation-based rodent model that mimics human exposure to electronic nicotine delivery systems, we examined how menthol aerosol influences nicotine-induced hypothermia, discriminative stimulus effects, and th

Creating and Implementing a Community-Focused, Culturally Tailored Health Marketing Campaign to Address Menthol Cigarette Use in Los Angeles County.

INTRODUCTION: Menthol tobacco products have been marketed disproportionately to communities of color for decades. METHODS: In Los Angeles County, California, a health marketing campaign, which used glossy visuals and attractive people in appealing poses, reminiscent of tobacco marketing tactics, was created and implemented to educate smokers on the health risks of using menthol cigarettes. The campaign encouraged smokers to make a quit attempt by offering access to free or low-cost resources through the Kick It California quitline and the LAQuits website (laquits.com). A survey tailored for p

Smoking cessation prevalence by menthol cigarette use and select demographics among adults in the United States, TUS-CPS, 2003-2019.

People who smoke menthol cigarettes, particularly those who are non-Hispanic Black/African American, are less likely to achieve successful smoking cessation compared with people who smoke non-menthol cigarettes. This study examined the 2003-2019 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (TUS-CPS) harmonized data to estimate cross-sectional trends in cigarette smoking cessation among U.S. adults, stratified by menthol cigarette use, race/ethnicity, sex, and age. The analytic sample included respondents who smoked for ≥ 2 years (current users and former users who reported quitting

Irritant-evoked reflex tachyarrhythmia in spontaneously hypertensive rats is reduced by inhalation of TRPM8 agonists l-menthol and WS-12.

Inhalation of noxious irritants activates nociceptive sensory afferent nerves innervating the airways, inducing reflex regulation of autonomic networks and the modulation of respiratory drive and cardiovascular (CV) parameters such as heart rate and blood pressure. In healthy mammals, irritant-evoked pulmonary-cardiac reflexes cause parasympathetic-mediated bradycardia. However, in spontaneously hypertensive (SH) rats, irritant inhalation also increases sympathetic drive to the heart. This remodeled pulmonary-cardiac reflex may contribute to cardiovascular risk caused by inhalation of air poll

Operant behavioral responses to orofacial cold stimuli in rats with chronic constrictive trigeminal nerve injury: effects of menthol and capsazepine.

Both spinal and trigeminal somatosensory systems use the TRPM8 channel as a principal transducer for detecting cold stimuli. It is currently unclear whether this cold transducer may play a role in trigeminal neuropathic pain manifesting cold allodynia and hyperalgesia. In the present study, trigeminal neuropathy was induced by chronic constrictive nerve injury of the infraorbital nerve (ION-CCI). Behavioral responses to cold stimuli in orofacial regions were assessed by the newly developed orofacial operant test in the ION-CCI rats. We tested menthol and capsazepine, two compounds that can act

Lower Successful Quit Rate of Menthol Tobacco Users in a Tobacco Cessation Program: An Explanatory Analysis in Search of Potential Mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Menthol-flavored tobacco products are disproportionately used in low-income African American communities, a result of decades of targeted marketing and systemic inequities. Menthol use has been associated with lower quit rates, often compounded by factors such as lower trust in healthcare systems, reduced access to cessation programs, and other structural barriers. Despite this, few studies have systematically examined the explanatory mechanisms that might clarify why menthol-flavored tobacco is linked to poorer cessation outcomes among participants in tobacco cessation programs.

Menthol as an effective inhibitor of quorum sensing and biofilm formation in Candida albicans and Candida glabrata by targeting the transcriptional repressor TUP1.

BACKGROUND: Menthol, a natural quorum sensing molecule, is derived from the Mentha species. Combating pathogenicity by inactivating quorum sensing is an emerging approach. Therefore, our objective was to investigate anti-quorum sensing and anti-biofilm potentials of menthol in Candida albicans and Candida glabrata. METHODS: The antifungal properties of menthol were evaluated using a broth microdilution assay and a time-kill assay, and its effects on quorum sensing-mediated virulence factors, cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and biofilm formation were tested by evaluating TUP1 expressio

The infusion of menthol into the esophagus evokes cold sensations in healthy subjects but induces heartburn in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Recent studies in animal models have reported that some afferent fibers innervating the esophagus express the cold receptor TRPM8. In the somatosensory system the stimulation of TRPM8 leads to cold sensations and in certain circumstances alleviates pain. It is therefore hypothesized in this paper that the esophageal infusion of the TRPM8 activator menthol evokes cold sensations from the esophagus and alleviates heartburn in humans. The esophageal infusion of menthol (3 mM, 20 min) evoked cold sensations in 11 of 12 healthy subjects. In striking contrast, the esophageal infusion of menthol evok

The influence of a menthol and ethanol soaked garment on human temperature regulation and perception during exercise and rest in warm, humid conditions.

UNLABELLED: This study assessed whether donning a garment saturated with menthol and ethanol (M/E) can improve evaporative cooling and thermal perceptions versus water (W) or nothing (CON) during low intensity exercise and rest in warm, humid conditions often encountered in recreational/occupational settings. It was hypothesised there would be no difference in rectal (Tre) and skin (Tsk) temperature, infra-red thermal imagery of the chest/back, thermal comfort (TC) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) between M/E, W and CON, but participants would feel cooler in M/E versus W or CON. Magnetic resonance imaging study on the physical stability of menthol and diphenhydramine cream for the treatment of chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus.

A cream that contains menthol and diphenhydramine is widely prepared in hospital pharmacies and prescribed to patients for the treatment of pruritus associated with chronic kidney disease. However, there is a serious concern regarding its physical stability; therefore, we investigated this issue using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). For a sample preparation, a menthol-containing ethanol solution was mixed with a commercial diphenhydramine cream. After storage for 7 d at 40°C, substantial phase separation into two distinct layers (upper and lower layers) was observed in the sample. This study

Menthol suppresses laryngeal C-fiber hypersensitivity to cigarette smoke in a rat model of gastroesophageal reflux disease: the role of TRPM8.

Patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) display enhanced laryngeal reflex reactivity to stimuli that may be due to sensitization of the laryngeal C-fibers by acid and pepsin. Menthol, a ligand of transient receptor potential melastatin-8 (TRPM8), relieves throat irritation. However, the possibility that GERD induces laryngeal C-fiber hypersensitivity to cigarette smoke (CS) and that menthol suppresses this event has not been investigated. We delivered CS into functionally isolated larynxes of 160 anesthetized rats. Laryngeal pH 5-pepsin treatment, but not pH 5-denatured pepsin, au

Understanding the impact of cooling and warming compounds on in-mouth aroma release from flavoured aqueous systems: the unexpected effect of menthol.

Menthol and capsaicin, known for their distinctive cooling and warming trigeminal sensations, respectively, are widely utilised as food flavour ingredients globally. Despite their well-documented effects on sensory perception, the impact of these compounds, individually and in combination, on in-mouth aroma release remains poorly understood. In this study, four flavoured aqueous model systems were formulated with either capsaicin, menthol, or in combination to compare against a control. Each model system contained five aroma compounds selected with diverse physicochemical properties: butyl for

Ingesting menthol in a beverage may alter the sweating response during passive heat stress, but only when the beverage is cold.

Consuming cold fluids during heat stress can alter sweating responses; however, it remains unclear why chemical activation of cold-sensitive transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) with menthol only induces a cold sensation. Animal models propose that complete cold transduction with TRPM8 chemical stimulation must be combined with physical cooling to impact thermoeffector responses. To address this, 12 participants (5 females and 7 males; 22 ± 5 yr; 79.5 ± 15.0 kg; 1.8 ± 0.1 m) conducted four passive heating protocols in random order where, within trial, they consumed 3.2 mL/kg body
