Midgut volvulus as a delayed consequence of posttraumatic mesenteric pseudocyst.

Complicated midgut volvulus is a surgical emergency with high mortality rate if not treated promptly. Most of midgut volvulus in adults is a silent form of congenital midgut malrotation, but it also can be acquired from other medical conditions, such as adhesion bands, tumors, and mesenteric cysts. Posttraumatic mesenteric pseudocysts are rare entities, and the diagnosis tends to be delayed. In reviewing the medical literature, midgut volvulus as a delayed consequence of posttraumatic hemorrhagic mesenteric pseudocyst has never been reported before. Here, we report a 50-year-old female patient

Small lymphocytic lymphoma involving an enlarging complex renal cyst.

A 47-year-old white man presented for evaluation of a complex right renal mass. He had a history of human immunodeficiency virus. Cervical lymph node biopsy had revealed small lymphocytic lymphoma. Computed tomographic scan disclosed diffuse mesenteric and retroperitoneal adenopathy consistent with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, as well as a 4.5-cm complex cystic right renal mass, which 17 months later enlarged to 6.2 cm. The mass resembled multiloculated cystic nephroma. Partial nephrectomy revealed infiltration of the cyst wall by small lymphocytic lymphoma. To our knowledge, this is the firs

Cecal Duplication Cyst Presenting as Intussusception in a 7-year-old Male.

Cecal duplication cysts (CDCs) are rare congenital anomalies, accounting for only 0.4% of gastrointestinal duplications. They may mimic common abdominal pathologies such as intussusception, making preoperative diagnosis difficult. A 7-year-old male presented with upper abdominal pain for 3 days. Imaging suggested a possible ileocolic intussusception with a mesenteric cyst. An attempt at noninvasive reduction was unsuccessful, necessitating laparotomy. Intraoperatively, a 5 cm × 4 cm duplication cyst was identified at the distal cecum. Resection of the cyst with the terminal ileum and cecum, fo

Ileocolic intussusception mimicking the imaging appearance of midgut volvulus as a result of extrinsic duodenal obstruction.

Duodenal obstruction caused by ileocolic intussusception in the absence of intestinal malrotation is extremely rare. We present and discuss the imaging findings in an infant with an intussusception secondary to a duplication cyst in whom sonography also showed inversion of the orientation of the mesenteric vessels and a distended stomach. A contrast medium study revealed a proximal duodenal obstruction with a beak appearance suggestive of midgut volvulus. At surgery, an ileocolic intussusception causing duodenal obstruction without concomitant malrotation or volvulus was found. The combination

Systemic Weber-Christian disease.

BACKGROUND: Weber-Christian disease is a controversial entity that histologically presents as a lobular panniculitis. A systemic variant of this disorder, in which visceral fat is affected, has been reported. OBJECTIVE: A 29-year-old woman with Weber-Christian disease developed a rapidly enlarging abdominal mass during hospitalization for a flare of her skin condition. The mass resolved spontaneously. Radiographic studies demonstrated a mesenteric cyst, which was thought to represent involvement of mesenteric fat by Weber-Christian disease. CONCLUSION: The appearance of an abdominal or pelvi

Multi-venous thrombosis associated with a perforated hydatid cyst: A rare case report and comprehensive literature review.

BACKGROUND: Hydatid cyst disease (HCD), caused by the larvae of Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus), can lead to rare vascular complications. This case report details the diagnosis and management of a patient with a hepatic hydatid cyst complicated by extensive multi-venous thrombosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old male stockbreeder presented with abdominal pain localized in the hypogastric region, exacerbated by food intake. Imaging revealed a hepatic HCD and thrombosis of the portal, superior mesenteric, and splenic veins. The patient was successfully treated with albendazole for the

Fetal intra-abdominal cysts: accuracy and predictive value of prenatal ultrasound.

OBJECTIVE: The finding of a fetal intra-abdominal cyst is relatively common and it can be due to a wide variety of clinical conditions. The aims of this study were to determine the accuracy of the prenatal ultrasound (US) in identifying the etiology of fetal intra-abdominal cysts and to describe the neonatal outcomes. METHODS: All cases of fetal intra-abdominal cystic lesion referred to our center between 2004 and 2012 were reviewed. Cysts of urinary system origin were excluded. Prenatal and postnatal data were collected. Our cohort was divided into subgroups according to the prenatal suspect

Laparoscopically excised completely isolated enteric duplication cyst in adult female: a case report.

Enteric duplication cysts are hollow, epithelium-lined, cystic, spherical, or tubular structures that are firmly attached to the wall of the gastrointestinal tract. Commonly they are supplied by surrounding mesenteric blood vessels. However, completely isolated duplication cysts do not communicate with the normal bowel segment and have their own exclusive blood supply. They are a very rare variety of gastrointestinal duplications. In the English medical literature there are 5 earlier reported cases: 4 in pediatrics and 1 in an adult male age 28 years. We report a case of a 27-year-old female p

A case of perforated cystic duplication of the transverse colon.

A 7-year-old girl presented with an abdominal cystic mass close to the pancreas. US and CT could not identify its origin. The diagnosis of duplication of the transverse colon was made at surgery. This location is rare. The differential diagnosis in this case included a pancreatic cystadenoma, a pseudocyst or a mesenteric cyst.

Tuboovarian abscess simulating giant colonic diverticulum.

The plain abdominal film finding of a large air-filled cavity has a differential diagnosis that includes giant colonic diverticulum, volvulus, giant Meckel's or other small-bowel diverticulum, emphysematous cystitis, vesicoenteric fistula, bowel duplication, and mesenteric cyst. The case presented here expands this differential diagnosis to include tuboovarian abscess with fistulous communication to the bowel.

First report of acute, visceral, fatal toxoplasmosis in a naturally infected calf (Bos taurus).

Cattle are considered resistant to clinical toxoplasmosis and viable Toxoplasma gondii is rarely isolated from bovine tissues. Currently, there is no histologically confirmed case of clinical toxoplasmosis in cattle. Here, the first confirmed case of acute toxoplasmosis in cattle is reported. A calf from New Zealand died of acute toxoplasmosis in 2012. Severe lesions were found in the intestinal mesentery and mesenteric lymph nodes. The mesenteric lymph nodes were edematous, and necrosis affected the entire parenchyma including blood vessels, associated with enormous numbers of tachyzoites. Le

Lymphoma, Koala Retrovirus Infection and Reproductive Chlamydiosis in a Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus).

Koala retrovirus (KoRV) infection, thought to be associated with lymphoid neoplasia, and Chlamydia pecorum-related ocular and urogenital disease are both highly prevalent in eastern Australian koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) populations. However, in South Australian koalas, little is known about KoRV infection and C. pecorum-associated disease. We report the first South Australian case of lymphoma in a KoRV-A-positive female koala also affected by severe reproductive chlamydiosis. The koala was from the Mount Lofty Ranges population and was presented with hindlimb lameness. Clinical examination

Small bowel obstruction in children: review of 10 years experience.

Small bowel obstruction, excluding postoperative adhesive ileus, in patients > 1 month old treated between June 1982 and May 1992 at Gunma Children's Hospital Medical Center is reviewed. There were 32 patients, 22 boys and 10 girls, whose ages ranged from 1 month to 6 years (median 9 months). Intussusception was the most frequent cause of obstruction and was seen in 17 patients (53.1%). Causative lesions were identified in five patients, and were ileal duplication cysts in four and Meckel's diverticulum in one. Incarcerated inguinal hernia and mesenteric cysts resulted in bowel obstruction in

Retroperitoneal congenital epidermoid cyst misdiagnosed as a solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal cysts are rare and usually asymptomatic abdominal lesions. Epidermoid cysts are frequent benign cutaneous tumors, but retroperitoneal localization of these cysts does not occur very often. CASE SUMMARY: We report a case report of a 25-year-old woman with a giant mass in the abdominal cavity. Because imaging examination indicated that the mass probably originated from the pancreas, the mass was considered a solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas (SPTP). However, surgery revealed a retroperitoneal epidermoid cyst located behind the pancreas neck and the root of

Duplication cyst with midgut volvulus in a neonate: an unusual presentation.

Incomplete intestinal fixation or malrotation of gut with midgut volvulus is one of the important causes of bilious vomiting in neonates. The incidence of malrotation of gut in population is 4% and that of duplication cyst is 1:4500. Patients with malrotation are prone to develop midgut volvulus due to their narrow mesenteric base demanding urgent surgical intervention. Common associated anomalies are intrinsic duodenal obstruction, internal hernias, caecal volvulus, anorectal malformations and Hirschsprung's disease. The present case refers to a 4-day-old neonate who presented with malrotatio

"Look Before You Leap": Robotic Resection of a Jejunal Mesenteric Pseudocyst.

A rare case of a jejunal mesenteric pseudocyst treated by robotic resection is reported. A 25-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with intermittent abdominal discomfort which was exacerbated by strenuous physical activities. Physical examination revealed a fluctuant mass without tenderness. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a 4 cm-sized non-enhancing heterogeneous mass on a proximal small bowel loop mesentery. Based on the findings, a differential diagnosis of a gastrointestinal stromal tumor, hematoma, desmoid tumor, and mesenteric cyst was made. Robotic diagnostic laparo

Nonparasitic abdominal serous cysts. A multiple case report.

A group of 35 patients with nonparasitic abdominal serous cysts is reviewed in order to investigate the diagnostic and therapeutic features of these rare conditions. In most cases the cysts were localised in the liver. Other localisations were the kidney (9 cases), the mesenteric area (2 cases), the adrenals (2 cases), the spleen and the pancreas (one case each). The clinical symptoms were essentially determinated by the size of the cysts, regardless their visceral localisation. Ultrasonography was the most efficient procedure for their detection, although this method's precision for the visce
