Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease Surveillance in Anhui, After Introduction of the Enterovirus 71 Vaccine and During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Ecological Interrupted Time Series Study.

BACKGROUND: Routine surveillance is important for understanding hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) after monovalent enterovirus 71 (EV71) vaccine introduction, but interpretation is difficult when etiologic typing is sparse and the COVID-19 pandemic overlaps with the postvaccine era. OBJECTIVE: This study described surveillance-derived changes in HFMD burden and typed serotype composition in Anhui Province, China, after EV71 vaccine introduction and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective ecological surveillance study using HFMD records from January 2008 to Dece

Research on Gambling in Young People: A Co-Occurrence Analysis.

Gambling as a risk factor in youth development, particularly its causes and consequences, has been the subject of a growing number of studies. However, the literature relating to young people has yet to be compiled in a systematic form. The present study adopts a descriptive bibliometric approach to map global research on gambling in young people using metadata from the Web of Science database. The results show that research on gambling in young people at a country level has increased in recent years, though some regions are underrepresented. Co-occurrence analysis revealed the frequent use of

Gut microbiome dynamics and predictive value in hospitalized COVID-19 patients: a comparative analysis of shallow and deep shotgun sequencing.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has led to a wide range of clinical presentations, with respiratory symptoms being common. However, emerging evidence suggests that the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is also affected, with angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, a key receptor for SARS-CoV-2, abundantly expressed in the ileum and colon. The virus has been detected in GI tissues and fecal samples, even in cases with negative results of the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction in the respiratory tract. GI symptoms have been associated with an increased risk of ICU admission and mortal

Unlocking the Potential of Genomic Data to Inform Typhoid Fever Control Policy: Supportive Resources for Genomic Data Generation, Analysis, and Visualization.

The global response to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic demonstrated the value of timely and open sharing of genomic data with standardized metadata to facilitate monitoring of the emergence and spread of new variants. Here, we make the case for the value of Salmonella Typhi (S. Typhi) genomic data and demonstrate the utility of freely available platforms and services that support the generation, analysis, and visualization of S. Typhi genomic data on the African continent and more broadly by introducing the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Preven

A Community Standard Multispecies Cell Atlas of the Basal Ganglia.

The NIH BRAIN Initiative Cell Atlas Network (BICAN) aims to generate a standardized, integrated cell atlas of the human, macaque, marmoset, and mouse brain that serves as a foundational community reference for the classification and study of brain cell types. Here we present the first major component of this effort: a cross-species, multimodal atlas of the basal ganglia, a group of subcortical nuclei central to motor control and implicated in a broad range of neurological disorders. Grounded in large-scale single-cell transcriptomic classification and integrated with epigenomic and spatial gen

From MAPK Reactivation to Response: Clinical Approaches Targeting BRAF/MEK Resistance in Melanoma.

Resistance to BRAF/MEK inhibition remains the central therapeutic challenge in BRAF mutant melanoma. Although combined MAPK-targeted therapy induces rapid and often dramatic tumor responses, most patients ultimately develop progressive disease. Over the past decade, translational studies have fundamentally changed our understanding of this process. Resistance is now recognized not as a single genomic event, but as a biologically heterogeneous and adaptive phenomenon involving tumor cell plasticity, microenvironmental remodeling, and immune evolution. This evolving framework has important clini

Work outside of work: after-hours use of the electronic medical record among residents at an academic veterinary teaching hospital.

The electronic medical record (EMR) is a major contributor to clinician workload, with substantial documentation often occurring outside scheduled patient care hours. In human medicine, after-hours EMR use has been associated with clinician burnout, yet it has not been objectively quantified among veterinary residents. The purpose of this study was to quantify after-hours EMR use among veterinary residents, to compare this across specialties and years of training, and to establish baseline metrics for future studies evaluating documentation efficiency and workflow interventions. BioPathfinder: Evidence-guided multi-agent platform enables hypothesis discovery for CAR-T engineering.

UNLABELLED: Clinical studies of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T therapy generate diverse molecular and clinical evidence that remains fragmented across publications, public repositories and patient-derived datasets, limiting systematic therapeutic discovery. Here we present BioPathfinder, an evidence-guided multi-agent workflow for closed-loop biomedical discovery. BioPathfinder constructs a provenance-aware knowledge resource linking publications with patient single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) datasets and clinical metadata, and uses role-specialized large language model agents to gener

Urban microclimate dataset from low-cost sensor networks in a hot and humid tropical climate: Reunion Island.

This article describes an urban microclimate dataset collected on Reunion Island, a hot and humid tropical island in the southwest Indian Ocean, between October 2024 and June 2025. Measurements were acquired from two neighborhood-scale monitoring networks installed in Saint-Denis (north coast) and Le Port (west coast), representing contrasting urban morphologies and local climatic contexts. The monitoring system was based on several LoRa communication networks connecting 25 low-cost weather stations developed by the authors and deployed on residential buildings. More than ten stations were ins

Multi-angle meta-analysis of the gut microbiome in Autism Spectrum Disorder: a step toward understanding patient subgroups.

Observational studies have shown that the composition of the human gut microbiome in children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) differs significantly from that of their neurotypical (NT) counterparts. Thus far, reported ASD-specific microbiome signatures have been inconsistent. To uncover reproducible signatures, we compiled 10 publicly available raw amplicon and metagenomic sequencing datasets alongside new data generated from an internal cohort (the largest ASD cohort to date), unified them with standardized pre-processing methods, and conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of a

Fast and inexpensive visualization of genome collection at scale.

BACKGROUND: Investigating genetic progression and lineage using sequence data is a fundamental focus within the realm of viral genome research. Given the substantial increase in publicly accessible genome sequences, tools designed for extensive data analytics, particularly insightful visualizations play an important role in elucidating the spatio-temporal evolution as well as the diversity of viral lineages. Existing genome data analysis methods frequently rely on multiple sequence alignment (MSA) and phylogeny computations, making integration of new sequences computationally expensive. Such m

HRV-anchored autonomic-morphological structured factorization for interpretable multimodal cardiovascular risk prediction.

Cardiovascular risk prediction from heterogeneous physiological signals supports early warning in bedside and wearable monitoring, where ECG, PPG, HRV, signal-quality indicators, activity context, and clinical metadata jointly carry evidence of short-term deterioration. However, existing approaches face two limitations: HRV-based models are physiologically interpretable yet cannot represent waveform morphology, whereas conventional multimodal deep models entangle autonomic regulation, cardiovascular morphology, activity-related interference, patient-specific baseline, and acquisition uncertain

A complete catalogue of human-infective RNA viruses.

RNA viruses are a pervasive and serious threat to human health. Here, we provide an updated catalogue of all 239 human-infective RNA virus species recognised by the end of 2024. Based on extensive literature searches, we provide metadata on the date and location of the first reported case of human infection, transmissibility in human populations, transmission route(s) and host range. We also provide links to publicly available genome sequence data. The dataset can be used in studies of the relationships between virus traits and public health threat, the phylogenetics of those traits, the geogr

Semantic Harmonization Workflow of Health Data: Application in the Post-COVID Network Netherlands.

Semantic interoperability in multi-source health datasets is a key barrier to data integration and reuse in biomedical research. FAIR principles promote standardization, but operationalizing them for heterogeneous clinical and patient-reported data remains challenging. We introduced a structured workflow that yields metadata-rich codebooks to support semantic interoperability. It integrates manual curation, expert-driven semantic annotation using biomedical ontologies and contextual suffixes for measurement nuances. The workflow was applied to the Post-COVID Network Netherlands (PCNN) dataset.
