Mercury, not sulphur dioxide, poisoning as cause of smelter disease in industrial plants producing sulphuric acid.

Several episodes of "smelter disease", previously assumed to be caused by sulphur dioxide (SO2) poisoning, have been reported in workers replacing pipes in sulphuric acid manufacturing plants. One such incident, affecting 20 men, was recorded in Akita, Japan, in July, 1993, but the protection these workers used suggested that some cause other than SO2 needed to be looked for. 10 workers were affected despite wearing respirators with SO2 cartridges, the symptoms including dyspnoea, diarrhoea, colicky pain, muscle pain and eczema with erythema. Subsequently 10 other workers using face masks with

[A particular case of hard metal disease].

BACKGROUND: The production and the use of hard metal tools have becoming increasingly widespread since the second half of the last century also thanks to the great variety of applications that extends from DIY to the aeronautical industry. It has already been known for many years that occupational exposure to hard metals dusts (which occurs especially in people employed in production of the metals or in the sharpening of tools that contain them) can determine the onset of pulmonary fibrosis, bronchial asthma and contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVES: clinical evaluation of a peculiar case of hard me

Nephrotoxicity of chromium. Remarks on an experimental and epidemiological investigation.

Observations conducted on a group of workers exposed to chromium (who showed a rapid urinary excretion of the metal and progressive increase of clearance with cumulative years of exposure), induced the authors to evaluate the nephrotoxic action of chromium in rats exposed to acute and chronic intoxication. The progressive Cr accumulation in the renal cortex during the course of testing explains the increase of the excreted fraction of filtered Cr, and therefore, the clearance, of the metal through the reduction of the tubular lumen-epithelium gradient. Paralleling the anatomical lesions (demon

Coal dust complexes host cell iron to impact metal homeostasis and pneumoconiosis.

Surface complexation of cell iron following particle exposure can be relevant to coal mine dust lung disease. We tested the postulate that 1) coal dust and humic substances (HS), a specific component of coal, complex intracellular iron from cultured cells to initiate a functional metal deficiency, 2) the functional cell iron deficiency that results after exposure to coal dust and HS impacts an increased release of both superoxide-related products and proinflammatory mediators, and 3) the disruption in iron homeostasis after coal dust exposure is associated with pneumoconiosis in miners. [Laboratory diagnosis of renal changes caused by occupational chemical factors].

The problem of early detection of the consequences of toxic action of chemical substances on the kidneys at the working place is becoming one of more important problems in the prophylaxis of renal diseases. The introduction of new sensitive diagnostic methods such as enzyme activity determination or low-molecular-weight proteins measurement in urine has made possible detection of renal damage in the reversible stage. As yet the observations demonstrate that workers exposed in their occupation to heavy metals (cadmium, lead, metalic mercury) and organic solvents should be subjected to special c

Transition and post-transition metals in exhaled breath condensate.

Water vapor in expired air, as well as dispersed non-volatile components, condense onto a cooler surface after exiting the respiratory tract. This exhaled breath condensate (EBC) provides a dilute sampling of the epithelial lining fluid. Accordingly, the collection of EBC imparts a capacity to provide biomarkers of injury preceding clinical disease. Concentrations of transition and post-transition metals in EBC are included among these endpoints. Iron and zinc are the metals with the highest concentration and are measurable in all EBC samples from healthy subjects; other metals are most freque

[Classification of mines in Poland by group radiation exposure of miners].

The computer data base on individual occupational exposure to ionizing radiation among miners (established at the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, Lodz) was used to classify all Polish non-uranium mines (coal, copper, lead-zinc and chemical raw material mines) according to values of the so-called group radiation exposure (in man-sivert units). In total 72 coal mines, 13 chemical raw material mines and 10 metal ore mines employing 246,580, 3,080, 17,820 miners, respectively, were assessed. The analysis of individual annual miners exposures indicated the highest exposure to ionizing rad

Risks in the physical recovery system of waste refrigerator cabinets and the controlling measure.

Environmental information in physical recovery system of waste refrigerator cabinets was provided in this paper. The system included closed shearing, activated carbon adsorption (ACA), air current separation, magnetic separation, and eddy current separation. Exposures of CFC-11, heavy metals, and noise emitted from the system were assessed. Abundant CFC-11 (>510 mg/m³) was detected in crusher cavity. However, due to the employment of ACA, little CFC-11 (<9.5 mg/m³) could be detected out the recovery system. Heavy metals were detected in the air of workshop (TSP: Cu ≤ 4.91 μg/m³, Pb ≤ 3.17 μg/m

Comparison of internal dose measures of solvents in breath, blood and urine and genotoxic changes in aircraft maintenance personnel.

Solvents and fuels are in widespread use both in civilian and military populations. 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA), xylene, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and methylene chloride are found in a variety of compounds including degreasing agents, paints, coatings, pesticides and paint strippers. Toluene and xylene are also found in fuels, which are complex mixtures of hundreds of agents. The purpose of this investigation was twofold. The first was to determine the optimum medium to measure internal dose of solvents comparing blood, urine and breath. The second was to determine if low level exposu

Bladder cancer risk in relation to occupations held in a nationwide case-control study in Iran.

Globally, bladder cancer has been identified as one of the most frequent occupational cancers, but our understanding of occupational bladder cancer risk in Iran is less advanced. This study aimed to assess the risk of bladder cancer in relation to occupation in Iran. We used the IROPICAN case-control study data including 717 incident cases and 3477 controls. We assessed the risk of bladder cancer in relation to ever working in major groups of the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO-68) while controlling for cigarette smoking, opium consumption. Logistic regression models

Occupational asthma caused by palladium.

Occupational exposure to complex platinum salts is a well-known cause of occupational asthma. Although there is evidence that platinum refinery workers may also be sensitized to other precious metals, such as palladium or rhodium, no instances of occupational asthma due to an isolated sensitization to palladium have been reported. A case is reported of occupational rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma in a previously healthy worker exposed to the fumes of an electroplating bath containing palladium. There was no exposure to platinum. Sensitization to palladium was documented by skin-prick tests. The

An unusual hypopigmentation in occupational dermatology: presentation of a case and review of the literature.

Contact dermatitis to cooling lubricants is commonly encountered in occupational dermatology, but it rarely induces pigmentary skin changes. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate between toxic leukoderma and postinflammatory hypopigmentation when examining a depigmentation. A differential diagnosis is described in the case of a 31-year-old metal worker, spending most of his time on a computer-numerically controlled machine, who presented with cumulative irritant hand dermatitis and secondary hypopigmentation. Patch tests gave negative reactions to the European standard series, the disinfe
