The effects of the mercuric compounds methylmercuric chloride (MMC) and mercuric chloride (MC) on growth, cell composition, and glucose uptake were studied in the ciliate protozoan Tetrahymena pyriformis GL. MMC was the most effective growth inhibitor of Tetrahymena among mercuric compounds and sulfhydryl inhibitors; it completely inhibited growth of Tetrahymena at concentrations of 1/30-1/3000 of the others. The growth inhibition of Tetrahymena was inversely proportional to concentrations of chemicals in medium. Particularly in the case of MMC and MC the relationship between the concentration

Wolverines are facultative scavengers that feed near the top of terrestrial food chains. We characterized concentrations of mercury and other trace elements in tissues of wolverine from a broad geographic area, representing much of their contemporary distribution in northwestern North America. We obtained tissues from 504 wolverines, from which mercury was measured on muscle (n = 448), kidney (n = 222), liver (n = 148), hair (n = 130), and brain (n = 52). In addition, methylmercury, seven trace elements (arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, lead, nickel, selenium), and arsenic compounds were me

Mangrove sediments are hotspots for neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) production, with litter-derived organic carbon strongly affecting mercury (Hg) methylation. However, the specific role of carbon bioavailability in regulating net MeHg production remains unclear. This study investigated sediments vegetated by exotic fast-growing Sonneratia apetala (SA) and native Kandelia obovata (KO) in southern China. Contrary to the expectation that larger carbon pools enhance methylation, MeHg levels were 2.1-2.6 times higher in SA sediments despite KO containing 1.2-4.2 times more total organic carbon. Th

Mercury ions (Hg(II)) in wastewater can accumulate and transform into the highly neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in activated sludge. The release of MeHg can have severe environmental consequences, making the treatment of MeHg-contaminated sludge a pressing concern. In this study, we found that all the collected activated sludge samples, from different wastewater treatment plants in four cities, had the potential for Hg methylation. The Hg-methylating capacity reached a maximum level of 0.70-0.92 μg/g volatile suspended solids after 48 h of exposure to 5 μg/L Hg(II) and showed an average MeHg

Biochar has received increased research attention due to its effectiveness in mitigating the potential risks of mercury (Hg) in agricultural soils. However, there is a lack of consensus on the effect of pristine biochar on the net production, availability, and accumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) in the paddy rice-soil system. As such, a meta-analysis with 189 observations was performed to quantitatively assess the effects of biochar on Hg methylation, MeHg availability in paddy soil, and the accumulation of MeHg in paddy rice. Results suggested that biochar application could significantly inc

The neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in paddy soils can accumulate in rice grains. Microbial demethylation is an important pathway of MeHg degradation in soil, but the effect of soil type on microbial degradation of MeHg remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated MeHg degradation in eight typical paddy soils and analyzed the associations between soil physiochemical properties and microbial degradation efficiencies of MeHg. Results showed that MeHg was significantly degraded in unsterilized paddy soils, and the microbial degradation efficiency ranged from 10.8% to 64.6% after a 30-day incubatio

Chinese population suffers severe health risk from dietary methylmercury (MeHg) exposure. However, the temporal change of such risk and socioeconomic driving factors remain unknown. This study investigates this issue by compiling time-series inventory of China's MeHg-related health risk at the provincial scale and revealing critical socioeconomic influencing factors through structural decomposition analysis. Results show that the per-fetus IQ decrements from dietary MeHg exposure have declined by 60% nationally during 2004-2019. Such decline results from the joint effects of dietary shifts (co

In this study, the stability, directionality, and physical nature of Spodium bonds (SpBs, an attractive noncovalent force involving elements from group 12 and Lewis bases) between methylmercury (MeHg) and ethylmercury (EtHg) and amino acids (AAs) have been analyzed from both a structural (X-ray analysis) and theoretical (RI-MP2/def2-TZVP level of theory) point of view. More in detail, an inspection of the Protein Data Bank (PDB) reported evidence of noncovalent contacts between MeHg and EtHg molecules and electron-rich atoms (e.g., O atoms belonging to the protein backbone and S atoms from MET

Selenium (Se) is a crucial antagonistic factor of mercury (Hg) methylation in soil, with the transformation of inorganic Hg (IHg) to inert mercury selenide (HgSe) being the key mechanism. However, little evidence has been provided of the reduced Hg mobility at environmentally relevant doses of Hg and Se, and the potential impacts of Se on the activities of microbial methylators have been largely ignored. This knowledge gap hinders effective mitigation for methylmercury (MeHg) risks, considering that Hg supply and microbial methylators serve as materials and workers for MeHg production in soils

We examined the composition and spatial correlation of sulfur and mercury pools in peatland soil profiles by measuring sulfur speciation by 1s X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectrocopy and mercury concentrations by cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectroscopy. Also investigated were the methylation/demethylation rate constants and the presence of hgcAB genes with depth. Methylmercury (MeHg) concentration and organic disulfide were spatially correlated and had a significant positive correlation (p < 0.05). This finding is consistent with these species being products of dissimilatory sulfa

Arctic tundra soils store a globally significant amount of mercury (Hg), which could be transformed to the neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) upon warming and thus poses serious threats to the Arctic ecosystem. However, our knowledge of the biogeochemical drivers of MeHg production is limited in these soils. Using substrate addition (acetate and sulfate) and selective microbial inhibition approaches, we investigated the geochemical drivers and dominant microbial methylators in 60-day microcosm incubations with two tundra soils: a circumneutral fen soil and an acidic bog soil, collected near Nome,

Some birds and cetaceans can demethylate the toxic methylmercury cysteinate (MeHgCys) complex into inert mercury sulfide (HgSe) through the formation of an intermediate tetrahedral selenolate complex with selenocysteine (Sec) residues (Hg(Sec)4). The nucleation of the HgSe biominerals involves the substitution of the Se ligand for the Sec residues, which is considered to occur in the form of multinuclear Hgx(Se,Sec)y clusters mediated by proteins. Queipo-Abad et al. (2022) isolated HgSe nanoparticles from the biological tissues of giant petrels and measured the mass-dependent fractionation of

This study aims to investigate methylmercury (MeHg) demethylation processes in human gut. Here, we determined the compositions and MeHg demethylation rates of gut microbiota in residents from different Hg exposure levels (Wanshan (WS) town and Yangtou (YT) town) and different Hg exposure sources (Zhuchang (ZC) town and YT town) regions. MeHg and inorganic Hg exposure levels in residents of WS town were significantly higher than those of YT and ZC town. Desulfovibrio and Methanogens, which related to Hg methylation/demethylation, showed significantly higher abundance in WS and ZC, comparing wit

Municipal sewage especially the produced sewage sludge is a significant source releasing mercury (Hg) to the environment. However, the Hg speciation especially methylmercury (MeHg) transformation in sewage sludge treatment process remains poorly understood. This study investigated the transformation of Hg speciation especially MeHg in sludge composting. The distribution of Hg transformation related gene pairs hgcAB and merAB, and their putative microbial hosts were comprehensively analyzed. Both Hg (from 3.16±0.22 mg/kg to 3.20±0.19 mg/kg) and MeHg content (from 4.77±0.64 ng/g to 4.36±0.37 ng/

Both inorganic (IHg) and organic (MeHg) forms of Hg can be converted into each other by methylation or demethylation, leading to changes of Hg speciation and distribution in fish. However, Hg biotransformation in fish is not thoroughly understood and the key factors in this process are unclear. The present study investigated the in vivo Hg transformation in a marine fish (Acanthopagrus latus) and explored the roles of intestinal microbiota in Hg biotransformation. We first demonstrated that Hg methylation or demethylation occurred in the fish gut under dietary IHg or MeHg exposure, respectivel

Intoxication by heavy metals such as methylmercury (MeHg) is recognized as a global health problem, with strong implications in central nervous system pathologies. Most of these neuropathological conditions involve vascular, neurotransmitter recycling, and oxidative balance disruption leading to accelerated decline in fine balance, and learning, memory, and visual processes as main outcomes. Besides neurons, astrocytes are involved in virtually all the brain processes and perform important roles in neurological response following injuries. Due to astrocytes' strategic functions in brain homeos

Tropical tunas are largely consumed worldwide, providing major nutritional benefits to humans, but also representing the main exposure to methylmercury, a potent neurotoxin that biomagnifies along food webs. The combination of ecological tracers (nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes, δ15N and δ13C) to mercury concentrations in tunas is scarce yet crucial to better characterize the influence of tuna foraging ecology on mercury exposure and bioaccumulation. Given the difficulties to get modern and historical tuna samples, analyses have to be done on available and unique samples. However, δ13C val

Mercury (Hg) exists in the environment as inorganic (metallic Hg vapor, mercurous and mercuric salts) or organic (bonded to a structure containing carbon atoms) forms. Neurotoxic effect of Hg is known for years. While the organic form (methylmercury (meHg)) led to the Minamata incidence in Japan and "wonder-wheat" disaster in Iraq, the "mad hatters" and "Danbury shakes" were related to the inorganic elemental form (Hg vapor). Human exposure to toxic Hg continues in the modern world to a large extent by artisanal gold mining, biomass combustion, chloralkali production, and indigenous medicine u

This study aims at the assessment of mercury (Hg)-selenium (Se) antagonism in fish. For this purpose, rainbow trout fish (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed to methylmercury (MeHg) under controlled conditions, in the presence or absence of selenomethionine (SeMet) using an in-house prepared diet (enriched with MeHg and SeMet at 0.2 μg/g and 5.0 μg/g, respectively). The total duration of the exposure study was 3 months. Fish was sampled and analysed for total Se (SeT) and total mercury (HgT) content after 1, 2 and 3 months of exposure. Six feeding protocols were compared, depending on the exposu

Mercury (Hg) contamination of paddy field poses a health risk to rice consumers, and its remediation is a subject of global scientific attention. In recent years focus has been given to in situ techniques which reduce the risk of Hg entering the food chain. Here, we investigate the use of nanoactivated carbon (NAC) as a soil amendment to minimize Hg uptake by rice plants. Application of 1-3% NAC to soil (by weight) reduced Hg concentration in the pore water (by 61-76%) and its bioaccumulation in the tissues of rice plants (by 15-63%), relative to the corresponding control. Specifically, NAC re
