Typhoons associated with heavy rainfall events, potentially triggering harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs) dominated by cyanobacteria in coastal reservoirs. These blooms deteriorate water quality and produce toxins, posing a threat to aquatic ecosystems. However, the ecological mechanisms driving cyanobacteria communities in response to typhoons remain unclear. To address this gap, we investigated a coastal reservoir with high-frequency sampling during two typhoon seasons. We employed comprehensive statistical methods under neutral and evolutionary theories to analyze environmental dynamics and c

The application of ultrafiltration (UF) technology in algae-laden water is limited due to the serious membrane fouling caused by algal foulants. Herein, a Ferrate/FeSO4(Fe(VI)/Fe(II)) pretreatment was proposed aiming to improve the performance of UF. The results showed that the synergistic of Fe(VI) and Fe(II) significantly increased the zeta potential of Microcystis aeruginosa, which enhanced the agglomerative tendency of algal foulants, and the particle size of flocs remarkably increased due to the in-situ generated Fe(III). Results from dissolved organic carbon (DOC), UV254, K+, and fluores

Understanding picophytoplankton variations that play important roles in the material circulation and energy flow are critical to assessing overall status of waterbody, especially for clean reservoirs which remain a relatively stable community structure and high species diversity due to lower nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients. However, their response to key environmental factors and tightly acting microbial remains poorly understood. Traditional quantification methods are limited, such as chlorophyll-a, turbidity and microscope. There are still many defects with present molecular analysis. In t

With this retrospective study, we investigated the temporal pattern of toxin exposure and pathology, as well as the topical relationship between hepatotoxic injury and localization of microcystin-LR, a potent hepatotoxin, tumor promoter, and inhibitor of protein phosphatases-1 and -2A (PP), in livers of MC-gavaged rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) yearlings, using an immunohistochemical detection method and MC-specific antibodies. H&E stains of liver sections were used to determine pathological changes. Nuclear morphology of hepatocytes and ISEL analysis were employed as endpoints to detect

Synthetic non-metallic nanoparticles (NMNPs) such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon nanodots (CNDs), and cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) have been explored to treat harmful algal blooms. However, their strain-specific algicidal activities have been rarely investigated. Here we determined their acute toxicity to nine freshwater cyanobacterial strains belonging to seven genera, including Microcystis aeruginosa UTEX 2386, M. aeruginosa UTEX 2385, M. aeruginosa LE3, Anabaena cylindrica PCC 7122, Aphanizomenon sp. NZ, Planktothrix agardhii SB 1810, Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, Lyngbya sp. CCAP 144

Long-term variations in reservoir water chemistry could provide essential data in making sustainable water quality management decisions. Here, we analyzed the spatiotemporal variabilities of nutrients, sestonic chlorophyll-a (CHL-a), nutrient enrichment, dominant algal species, and overall chemical water health of the third-largest drinking water reservoir in South Korea during 2000-2020. Our results distinctly explained the strong influence of monsoon rainfall on spatial and annual water chemistry variations. We observed a consistent increase in the chemical oxygen demand alluding to organic

BACKGROUND: Freshwater cyanobacteria are common inhabitants of recreational waterbodies throughout the world; some cyanobacteria can dominate the phytoplankton and form blooms, many of which are toxic. Numerous reports in the literature describe pruritic skin rashes after recreational or occupational exposure to cyanobacteria, but there has been little research conducted on the cutaneous effects of cyanobacteria. Using the mouse ear swelling test (MEST), we sought to determine whether three toxin-producing cyanobacteria isolates and the purified cyanotoxin cylindrospermopsin produced delayed-c

Microcystin-LR (MC-LR), a cyclic heptapeptide hepatotoxin (mol. wt = 994) produced by the blue-green alga (cyanobacterium), Microcystis aeruginosa, was reduced with tritium labeled sodium borohydride, converted to [3H]-dihydro-microcystin-LR ( [3H]-2HMC-LR), and purified to greater than 99% purity by C-18 reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The uptake and subcellular distribution of [3H]-2HMC-LR were determined in suspensions of hepatocytes at 0 degrees C and 37 degrees C, or following rifampicin pretreatment, and in perfused rat liver. The remaining cells were homogenized an

The toxic effects of several species of fresh water cyanobacteria, notably Microcystis species and associated toxins, the microcystins, Anabaena species (anatoxin), Nodularia sp. (nodularin), and Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (cylindrospermopsin), are well known. Little, however, is known about the effects of secondary metabolites other than alkaloids. Early life stage tests with zebrafish (Danio rerio) were used to detect bioactive properties of compounds released by healthy cyanobacteria (Fischerella ambigua), particularly on the early developmental stages of fish. This approach, using F. a

The eutrophication of aquatic ecosystems often triggers the excessive growth of cyanobacteria, many of which release toxic metabolites such as microcystins (MCs). When irrigation water is contaminated by these compounds, adverse consequences may arise for plants as well as for animal and human health. In contrast, certain non-toxic cyanobacterial species like Limnospira platensis are increasingly regarded as valuable tools for sustainable agriculture, given their ability to enhance plant nutrition, growth, yield, and stress tolerance while also mitigating the detrimental impacts of MCs. The pr

Microcystins are the most commonly encountered water-borne cyanotoxins which present short- and long-term risks to human health. Guidelines at international and national level, and legislation in some countries, have been introduced for the effective health risk management of these potent hepatotoxic, tumour-promoters. The stable cyclic structure of microcystins and their common production by cyanobacteria in waterbodies at times of high total dissolved organic carbon content presents challenges to drinking water treatment facilities, with conventional, advanced and novel strategies under eval

Freshwater cyanobacterial blooms (cyanoHABs) are expanding across the world, and their frequency and severity are becoming more intense due to prevalent eutrophication and a changing climate. Traditionally, the concerns about cyanoHABs have mainly focused on cyanotoxins in water. CyanoHABs are also hypothesized to play a role in the antibiotic resistome, but whether cyanobacteria host clinically relevant antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in the environment is largely unknown. To investigate this emerging issue, we examined whether cyanobacteria host ARGs within the broader microbiome context.

UNLABELLED: Eutrophication and warming in Lake Erie create two microbial threats: cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs) that can produce toxins, and seasonal hypoxia driven by microbial respiration. These phenomena are often studied separately, with cHABs research focused on the Western basin and hypoxia on the Central basin. We conducted lakewide microbial sampling at three time points in 2024 (May, August, and September), integrating physicochemical data, cyanotoxin quantification, amplicon sequencing, and flow cytometry. We demonstrate that cyanobacteria form spatially and seasonally

Cyanobacteria or blue green algae are known for their extensive and highly visible blooms in eutrophic, stagnant freshwater bodies. Climate change and global warming have also contributed to a rise in toxic cyanobacterial blooms. One of the most important cyanobacteria is Microcystis aeruginosa, which can synthesize various microcystins that can affect the health of terrestrial and aquatic animals. Commercial Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) farming in South Africa is based on keeping breeders (adult males and females) in big dams on farms (captive-bred approach). Unfortunately, cyanobact

This study was carried out to assess the inhibitory activity of algae in plateau lakes against plant pathogenic fungi, and further conduct preliminary research and analysis on their antifungal active ingredients, in order to provide a certain basis for the development and utilization of algal secondary metabolite as anti-plant pathogenic fungal agents. Different solvent extraction methods using water, ethyl acetate, ethanol, and methanol were conducted to extract polyphenol metabolites from Ulothrix, Chlorella vulgaris, and Microcystis pseudofilamentosa Crow. The composition of the extracts wa

CASE HISTORY: In March 2006, an outbreak of photosensitivity affecting 6-8-month-old Friesian heifer calves on a farm in the Rangitikei district of New Zealand was investigated. The calves were grazing wheat stubble paddocks that also had a variety of weeds, especially Phytolacca octandra (inkweed). They also had access to pond water that contained potentially toxic concentrations of the cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) Microcystis and Planktothrix spp.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Initially, affected animals showed acute irritation, agitation, reluctance to walk, recumbency in some animals, hyperaemia

We had previously shown that microcystin-LR (MCLR) could induce lung and liver inflammation after acute exposure. The biological outcomes following prolonged exposure to MCLR, although more frequent, are still poorly understood. Thus, we aimed to verify whether repeated doses of MCLR could damage lung and liver and evaluate the dose-dependence of the results. Male Swiss mice received 10 intraperitoneal injections (i.p.) of distilled water (60 μL, CTRL) or different doses of MCLR (5 μg/kg, TOX5), 10 μg/kg (TOX10), 15 μg/kg (TOX15) and 20 μg/kg (TOX20) every other day. On the tenth injection res

Suspended algae, or phytoplankton, are the prime source of organic matter supporting food webs in freshwater ecosystems. Phytoplankton productivity is reliant on adequate nutrient supplies; however, increasing rates of nutrient supply, much of it manmade, fuels accelerating primary production or eutrophication. An obvious and problematic symptom of eutrophication is rapid growth and accumulations of phytoplankton, leading to discoloration of affected waters. These events are termed blooms. Blooms are a prime agent of water quality deterioration, including foul odors and tastes, deoxygenation o

Cyanobacteria-derived peptides represent a promising class of anticancer agents due to their structural diversity and potent bioactivity. They exert cytotoxic effects through mechanisms including microtubule disruption, histone deacetylase inhibition, and apoptosis induction. Several peptides-most notably the dolastatin-derived auristatins-have achieved clinical success as cytotoxic payloads in antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). However, challenges such as limited tumor selectivity, systemic toxicity, and production scalability remain barriers to broader application. Recent advances in targeted

Algae are a rich source of bioactive compounds that have a wide range of beneficial effects on human health and can show significant potential in the treatment of hematological malignancies such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. These diseases often pose a therapeutic challenge despite recent advances in treatment (e.g., the use of immunomodulatory drugs, proteasome inhibitors, CD38 monoclonal antibodies, stem cell transplant, and targeted therapy). A considerable number of patients experience relapses or resistance to the applied therapies. Algal compounds, alone or in combination
