Postmenopausal osteoporosis: microradiographic aspects.

A comparative microradiographic and histologic analysis of undecalcified bone samples was performed in men and women aged 18-98 years. These morphological methods showed that besides usual lamellar bone remodelling, all the so-called inert surfaces, namely both haversian and vascular canals as well as trabecular surfaces, were involved in weathering alterations of the superficial lamellae, resulting in eroded outlines devoid of osteoclast. These aspects, recorded in all pieces of our material, were visible from the earliest adult age and were randomly distributed. Except the grade of osteoporo

pH-cycling of enamel and dentin lesions in the presence of low concentrations of fluoride.

F-dentifrice usage causes slightly elevated fluoride levels in saliva. Therefore, the effects of permanent low fluoride concentrations versus daily dentifrice treatments were studied on enamel and dentin lesions in a pH-cycling model of alternating demineralization and remineralization. Groups received 1) no fluoride treatment, 2) 3 mu M (0.06 ppm) F continuously present during re- and demineralization or 3) daily 5-min F-dentifrice treatments. Solutions were analyzed for changes in calcium and fluoride. Cumulative results (10 d) showed that for the non-fluoride group the dentin lesions increa

[Evaluation of tiny abnormal mucosal findings on double contrast barium enema study].

Tiny abnormal mucosal findings on double contrast barium enema studies in 104 cases were classified into 5 patterns, as follows 1) small elevation, 2) elevation with barium fleck, 3) spotty barium fleck, 4) ill defined barium fleck and 5) barium fleck with halo. Each mucosal pattern was correlated with age, sex and symptoms, as well as the coexistence of the fine network pattern. They were compared with those of 86 control cases. 44 histologically proven cases were reviewed in order to clarify the clinical significance of the above 5 patterns. Incidence of the tiny mucosal findings was 4.8% (1

Automatic pH-cycling caries model applied on root hard tissue.

The development of a caries lesion is a dynamic process that includes frequently alternating periods of de- and remineralization, a process for which no in vitro models currently exists. The aim of this study was to develop a model which could repeatedly generate identical pH versus time curves over extended periods of time. To test the model demineralization studies on cementum/dentin were performed. Cementum/dentin blocks were repeatedly subjected to de- and remineralizing solutions delivered by a computerized pump system connected to a pH-meter and a recorder. pH versus time curves similar

Longitudinal microradioscopic comparisons on endosteal and juxtaendosteal bone loss in premenopausal and postmenopausal women, and in those with end-stage renal disease.

Endosteal bone resorption is the principal mechanism of bone loss in involutional osteoporosis and in renal osteodystrophy. In the cortical bone it is often accompanied by juxtaendostal bone resorption. Using fine-detail radiographs and x6 magnified viewing, longitudinal radiographic observations and measurements were made on these two forms of bone resorption in the metacarpals II, III, and IV in three groups of women: (1) premenopausal, (2) postmenopausal, and (3) patients with end-stage renal disease. Bone loss was found to be negligible in the premenopausal women, but in postmenopausal and

Phagocytic potential of hairy cells.

The hairy-cells (HC) of 10 patients with hairy-cell leukaemia were studied with several techniques to evaluate their phagocytic potential. Mononuclear cells from normal donors and from patients with acute monocytic leukaemia served as controls. Light microscopically HC seemed to have ingested bacteria or latex particles. Treatment of the cells with lysostaphin, an enzyme that kills extracellular Staphylococcus aureus, showed that almost all 'ingested' bacteria were extracellular. Lanthanum nitrate, added during the fixation procedure for electron microscopy, stained both the outer cell membran

Autoradiographic method for quantitation of deposition and distribution of radiocalcium in bone.

A method is described for quantitating autoradiographs of bone-seeking isotopes in microscopic sections of bone. Autoradiographs of bone sections containing 45Ca and internal calibration standards are automatically scanned with a microdensitometer. The digitized optical density output is stored on magnetic tape and is converted by computer to equivalent activity of 45Ca per gram of bone. The computer determines the total 45Ca uptake in the bone section and, on the basis of optical density and anatomic position, quantitatively divides the uptake into 4 components, each representing a separate p

Effect of Three Chemical Agents on Stain Removal from Dentin Caries Lesions Treated with Silver Diamine Fluoride.

INTRODUCTION: This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of three different chemical agents on stain removal and mineral uptake of artificial dentin caries (ADC) lesions treated with silver diamine fluoride (SDF). METHODS: Baseline L*a*b* values were determined in polished human permanent dentin blocks, and ADC lesions were induced with an acid gel for 1 week. Samples were assigned to four groups; in three groups, half of each sample received SDF (30% SDF for 3 min), while the other half received SDF followed by a bleaching treatment protocol (garlic extract, bentonite, or 35% hydrogen

Structure and Chemical Composition of ca. 10-Million-Year-Old (Late Miocene of Western Amazon) and Present-Day Teeth of Related Species.

Molecular information has been gathered from fossilized dental enamel, the best-preserved tissue of vertebrates. However, the association of morphological features with the possible mineral and organic information of this tissue is still poorly understood in the context of the emerging area of paleoproteomics. This study aims to compare the morphological features and chemical composition of dental enamel of extinct and extant terrestrial vertebrates of Crocodylia: Purussaurus sp. (extinct) and Melanosuchus niger (extant), and Rodentia: Neoepiblema sp. (extinct) and Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris (e

High Amount of Organic Matter during Caries Formation Reduces Remineralization and Resin Infiltration of Enamel Caries.

The amount of organic material in the cariogenic environment correlates with the amount of organic material incorporated in carious enamel. The incorporated organic material may be expected to reduce the pore volumes available for remineralization and resin infiltration, but these expected outcomes have not yet been quantified. We tested the effect of the amount of organic content in the cariogenic agent on remineralization and the resin-occluded pore volume in artificial subsurface enamel caries. An acid gel (organic-rich; G1) and an aqueous solution (organic-poor; G2) were used to induce sub

In osteoporotic women treated with strontium ranelate, strontium is located in bone formed during treatment with a maintained degree of mineralization.

UNLABELLED: In postmenopausal osteoporotic women and up to 3 years of treatment with strontium ranelate, strontium was present only in recently deposited bone tissue resulting from formation activity during the period of treatment. Strontium was shown to be dose-dependently deposited into this newly formed bone with preservation of the mineralization. INTRODUCTION: Interactions between strontium (Sr) and bone mineral and its effects on mineralization were investigated in women treated with strontium ranelate. METHODS: Bone biopsies from osteoporotic women were obtained over 5-year strontium

Hardness of the subchondral bone of the patella in the normal state, in chondromalacia, and in osteoarthrosis.

The hardness of bone is its property of withstanding the impact of a penetrating agent. It has been found that articular degenerative changes in, for example, the tibia (knee) are combined with a decrease in the hardness of the subchondral bone. In this investigation the hardness of subchondral bone in chondromalacia and osteoarthrosis of the patella has been analysed and compared with normal subchondral bone. Using an indentation method originally described by Brinell the hardness of the subchondral bone was evaluated in 7 normal patellae, in 20 with chondromalacia and in 33 with osteoarthros

Scanning Electron Microscopy and Bone.

This chapter discusses methods for preparing samples of bone and bone cells for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Backscattered electron (BSE) imaging is by far the most useful in the bone field, followed by secondary electrons (SE) and the energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analytical modes. Samples may have detail in a 3D surface, or be topography-free, polished or micromilled, resin-embedded block surfaces, or resin casts of space compartments surrounded by bone matrix. Shipping wet bone samples between labs is best done in glycerol. Methods for cells include fixation, drying, looking at under

Remineralization effectiveness of adhesive containing amorphous calcium phosphate nanoparticles on artificial initial enamel caries in a biofilm-challenged environment.

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries is closely associated with acid-producing bacteria, and Streptococcus mutans is one of the primary etiological agents. Bacterial accumulation and dental demineralization lead to destruction of bonding interface, thus limiting the longevity of composite. The present study investigated remineralization effectiveness of adhesive containing nanoparticles of amorphous calcium phosphate (NACP) in a stimulated oral biofilm environment. METHODS: The enamel blocks were immersed in demineralization solution for 72 h to imitate artificial initial carious lesion and then subject

Prevalence of histologic otosclerosis: an unbiased temporal bone study in Caucasians.

BACKGROUND: 'Histologic otosclerosis' refers to a disease process without clinical symptoms or manifestations that can only be discovered by sectioning of the temporal bone at autopsy. 'Clinical otosclerosis' concerns the presence of otosclerosis at a site where it causes conductive hearing loss by interfering with the motion of the stapes or of the round window membrane. Various authors have studied the prevalence of histologic otosclerosis on laboratory collections of temporal bones. Some 12-15% of the temporal bones with histologic otosclerosis have demonstrated stapedial fixation. Using th

Development of an in situ root caries model. A. In vitro investigations.

OBJECTIVES: The paper describes preliminary in vitro investigations, the objectives of which were to examine the influence of certain experimental parameters on artificial carious lesion formation in root hard tissues, and their remineralisation. These experiments formed part of a wider study that aimed to develop an in situ model of root caries, based on the existing coronal caries model used in Liverpool. The present studies examined the effects (a) of the anatomical origin of the dentine, the presence or absence of cementum, the exposure time and the type of demineralising system, on lesion

Osteopontin is associated with bioprosthetic heart valve calcification in humans.

Calcification of non-osseous tissues such as heart valves or vessels is a major concern in clinical practice. The exact mechanism is still unknown. Numerous studies have shown that mineral deposits of crystalline hydroxyapatite within these tissues were associated with increased non-collagenous protein content. More recently osteopontin was found to be associated with calcification in living tissues such as vessels and native human aortic valves. The aim of this study was to determine whether or not non-collagenous proteins can also be found in non-living tissues such as glutaraldehyde-pretrea
