We report on 2 unrelated boys with a distinctive facial appearance of microtia, atretic external auditory meati, small mandible, and microstomia, who also have a skeletal dysplasia, microcephaly, and joint contractures. The skeletal abnormalities, short stature, and microcephaly led to an initial diagnosis of osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism; however, the birth weight of one of the children is not low enough to firmly establish this diagnosis. The similarities were detected by the matching program of the London Dysmorphology Data-base.

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial microsomia is one of the most common conditions treated by craniofacial teams. However, research regarding the cause of this condition or the surgical outcomes of treatment is scant. This is attributable to the lack of diagnostic criteria and the wide phenotypic spectrum. Standardized description of the craniofacial malformations associated with craniofacial microsomia is a necessary first step for multicenter, interdisciplinary research into this complex condition.
METHODS: The authors used the previously published pictorial Orbit, Mandible, Ear, Nerve, and Soft tiss

An individual mouth splint device that applies continuous or intermittent pressure to stretch commissures and fibrotic muscles in patients treated for microstomia resulting from facial and neck burns is presented. After an individual lip tray is prepared, the method uses the impression and cast of the region of the lips to construct a pink acrylic resin splint. By using the device, split horizontally and activated with a Hyrx screw, an opening of 14 mm can be obtained within 2 weeks. The device is recommended as being easily constructed, inexpensive, almost painlessly inserted, and progressive

Sodium hydroxide or caustic soda is a corrosive agent that can cause extensive damage to the oral mucosa, lips, and tongue when ingested either accidentally or intentionally. These injuries include microstomia, shallow vestibule, ankyloglossia, speech impairment, loss of teeth and impairment in facial expression. In the present article, we report a unique case of tongue adhesion to the mouth floor and its surgical management in a 66-year-old female patient, who had a history of caustic soda ingestion.

Dental treatment is an important part of the multidisciplinary care of patients with epidermolysis bullosa (EB). Routine dental treatment can be difficult to provide in patients with severe tissue fragility caused by mucosal sloughing, microstomia, ankyloglossia, and scarring. This article provides a review of dental practices, exploring different areas of oral management and highlighting the importance of early referral, preventive programs, and close follow-up to maintain oral health. It also discusses treatment modifications and precautions needed for each of the 4 mayor types of EB.

The Authors describe a case of Freeman-Sheldon Syndrome, a rare congenital autosomal dominant disorder (gene mapped on chromosome 11p15.5) characterized by microstomia with crinkled lips, camptodactyly with ulnar deviation of the fingers and equinus-varus-supine clubfoot. The autosomal recessive form, even rarer and difficult to recognize, has a more severe clinical manifestation. The symptomatology is worsened by breathing and swallowing disorders due to the small orifices of the mouth and nose, which sometimes require tracheotomy to avoid obstruction of the airways.

BACKGROUND: Freeman-Sheldon Syndrome is a rare craniofacial syndrome that has not been described in the dental literature to date. The main feature of relevance is severe microstomia, which limits access for routine dental care.
CASE REPORT: Dental treatment was carried out successfully under local anaesthetic for a young child with Freeman-Sheldon syndrome. A novel coloured compomer material was helpful in the management of the case.
CONCLUSION: The importance of early referral of children with rare craniofacial anomalies to Specialist Paediatric Dental services is highlighted.

A 6-year-old child with Schwartz-Jampel syndrome (SJS) underwent tenotomy of bilateral lower limbs under general anesthesia. Patient with SJS has problems such as difficulty of intubation owing to microstomia and jaw muscle rigidity, and is susceptible to malignant hyperthermia by using volatile inhalation anesthetics. In this case, we used a laryngeal mask for airway management and anesthesia was maintained with inhalation of nitrous oxide and continuous i.v. infusion of propofol with caudal block, and his clinical course was uneventful.

Lips play a crucial role in facial aesthetics, and lip defects not only impact appearance but also function. Repairing lip defects has long been a big challenge for surgeons. Currently, "V" shaped excisions are commonly employed in lip tumor surgeries, encompassing both the lesion and surrounding normal tissue, which facilitates wound closure. However, this technique may result in the loss of transverse lip width, leading to microstomia and affecting aesthetics. Additionally, the removal of a significant amount of normal tissue can result in noticeable vertical scars. To address these limitati

INTRODUCTION: Systemic sclerosis, also known as scleroderma, is a chronic disease marked by autoimmune-mediated damage to connective tissues leading to vascular damage, tissue injury, and fibrosis. Effective treatment for this condition has remained difficult; however, a promising therapeutic option for patients with systemic sclerosis has emerged as hyaluronidase.
OBJECTIVES: We conducted a systemic review of the available literature to describe the therapeutic usage of hyaluronidase in systemic sclerosis.
METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive review on PubMed and Embase, using the terms: "

A male patient, who had intra-uterine growth retardation, a low birth weight and hypotonia due to a chromosome 2q33.1 deletion, is described. At the age of 20 years, he displays short stature, microcephaly, a high forehead, microstomia, large teeth and is hypertonic. He is severely mentally retarded, has not developed speech, is hyperactive, anxious and at times aggressive. Full tiling array showed a de novo 14 Mb deletion at chromosome region 2q32.3q33.2, further delineating the 2q33.1 microdeletion syndrome.

Reconstruction of a composite defect of the lower lip after oncological resection is challenging, and it is essential to consider both functional and aesthetic components when repairing lips. We report a technique that can be used to repair anything ranging from 30% to the whole of the lower lip with a bilateral commissurotomy and advancement of skin, muscle, and mucosal flaps. This technique helps to achieve good oral function, excellent lip function, and a pleasant aesthetic appearance. It also prevents microstomia and allows patients to maintain normal sensory innervation.

Extensive intra-oral burns are very rare injuries. The microstomia resulting from the advanced cicatrization of the mucosa makes it difficult for the patient to eat and impossible to take care of his teeth. The traditional operation for widening the oral orifice was not sufficient because of the extensive scarring of the bucca. In the first operation the authors substituted the mucosa of the lip and the bucca of one side with splitted jejunum. Because of the advancing scarring another operation was performed and the mucosa of the other side of the bucca and the angle of mouth was substituted w

Otocephaly is a craniofacial syndrome with a constellation of findings consistent with symmetrically deficient development of the first branchial arch. Characteristically, those affected have ventrally displaced ears, microstomia, and an atrophic to absent mandible. Secondary to oropharyngeal incompetence, ventilatory, difficulties typically lead to the imminent death of these infants shortly after birth. Here we present a patient who survived well beyond the perinatal period with the support of pediatric intensivists and advanced technology available for the diagnosis and treatment of such a

Full-thickness defects of the lower lip pose a considerable challenge for reconstructive surgeons. The primary objective should be the restoration of oral sphincter competence, achieving both functionally and aesthetically favorable outcomes. For defects involving more than one-third of the lower lip, multiple locoregional flaps have been described as the optimal solution due to their color and texture match. Unfortunately, complications such as reduction of buccal circumference or microstomia have been reported, impacting patients' quality of life. For defects exceeding 80% of the lower lip,

Microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) is a rare, idiopathic, autoimmune, systemic disease that most frequently involves the kidneys. The present study reports the case of a 48-year-old female patient who presented with diffuse myalgia, arthralgia of both hands and feet for 2 weeks before being admitted to the hospital. The patient exhibited involuntary loss of weight and occasional slight fever. Physical examination noted microstomia and perioral radial furrows, slight skin induration of the hands, discrete cyanotic skin areas on the dorsal side of both feet. The patient also presented bilateral crep

Current evidence suggests awaiting for scars to fully mature before engaging surgical reconstruction unless acute indications to prevent secondary damage, such as microstomia and eyelid ectropion are apparent. To evaluate the efficacy of ablative fractional CO2 laser intervention early in the acute treatment of panfacial burn injury. A 39-year-old Asian male with 60% TBSA flame burns including panfacial involvement was developing microstomia and upper and lower eyelid ectropion early proceeding epithelialization. At 6-weeks postinjury, ablative fractional CO2 laser treatment was commenced whil

THE AIM OF THE STUDY: Was to assess age-related changes in mouth opening and tongue mobility in children with various forms of epidermolysis bullosa (EB). Materials and methods. The study comprised 50 EB children (mean age 8.8±3.9 years). Oral slit width (the distance between mouth commissures at rest), mouth opening amplitude (the distance between incisive edges of the lower and upper incisors) were measured by orthodontic caliper. Tongue mobility was assessed using Bristol Tongue Assessment Tools (BTAT). The results were compared with 55 healthy age-matched controls (mean age 9.3±3.7 years).

We report on a mother and son with high forehead; elongated and flattened face; arched, sparse eyebrows; short palpebral fissures; telecanthus; long nose and hypoplastic nostrils; long philtrum; microstomia; high, narrow palate; nasal speech; chin dimples; and a highly unusual bilateral auricular malformation. Intelligence and hearing are normal, and there is no "whistling" face or deviation of fingers. Although resembling in some ways the Freeman-Sheldon syndrome, this phenotype most likely represents a new malformation syndrome, either autosomal dominant or X-linked dominant.
