[Study on correlation between otitis media with effusion and tracheal intubation].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the factors related to the occurrence of otitis media with effusion (OME) in patients with long-term tracheal intubation. METHOD: This retrospective study included 47 cases with endotracheal intubation more than 7 days (endotracheal intubation group) and 20 cases without mechanically ventilated in the same period(control group). The relationships between secretory otitis media with age, gender, intubation method, duration of intubation, breathing patterns, consciousness, gastric tube position were analysed. RESULT: The study showed 27 out of 47 patients in endotracheal i

Long term results of treatment of middle ear effusion.

Ten years follow-up of 48 patients (33 boys, 15 girls) with middle ear effusion treated by adeno-tonsillectomy, antral lavage and paracentesis is presented. Using the modified but stricter classification of Tos and Poulsen, the results compare well (Table V). Agreement between otoscopy and impedance measurement was remarkably high. It was noted that the greater the number of repeated paracenteses, the higher the compliance rose above normal, but there was no relation to the viscosity of the fluid found. In ears in which grommets were used, only in 10 per cent was the tympanic membrane found to

Transtympanic gentamycin in the treatment of Ménière's disease.

Severe cases of Ménière's disease are successfully treated with ototoxic antibiotics. Gentamycin sulphate gives the best results. With the aid of a small syringe the drug is introduced into the external auditory canal 3-5 times per day. From there it is transported into the middle ear through a ventilating tube (Grommet) under slight pressure (Politzer bag). The liquid then penetrates the round and oval windows and influences inner-ear function. More than 90% of our patients in 25 years after therapy had no further attacks.

Prevention of severe mucosecretory ear disease and its complications in patients with cleft lip and palate malformations.

Morphological and functional alterations in patients with cleft lip and palate act as predisposing factors in eustachian tube dysfunctions and as a result thereof in the occurrence of mucosecretory ear disease (MSED) and its complications. Development of MSED is the result of tube dysfunction and it consists of: (a) fluctuating conductive hearing loss, (b) swallowing alterations and (c) respiratory functional disorders. Once this syndrome is confirmed in children with clefts, action must be taken through a coordinated multidisciplinary approach with plastic surgery, odontology, and speech ther

The effect of intervelar veloplasty under magnification (Sommerlad's Technique) without tympanostomy on middle ear effusion in cleft palate patients.

OBJECTIVE: Different surgical techniques and management approaches have been introduced to manage the cleft palate (CP) and its complications, such as otitis media with effusion (OME) and auditory problems. The optimal method, as well as the ideal time for palatoplasty and ventilation tube insertion, are the subject of controversy in the literature. We aimed to evaluate The Effect of Intervelar Veloplasty under Magnification (Sommerlad's Technique) without Tympanostomy on Middle Ear Effusion in Cleft Palate Patients. METHODS: non-syndromic cleft palate patients from birth to 24 months who nee

Predictors of postoperative complications in paediatric patients receiving grommets - A retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Insertion of middle ear ventilation tubes (MEVT), tympanostomy tubes or grommets is one of the most common paediatric surgical procedures performed by ENT surgeons worldwide. Outcomes may be complicated by postoperative otorrhoea and ventilation tube blockage. OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors associated with early postoperative complications of MEVT insertion. METHOD: In a case-control study, set in a tertiary hospital in Melbourne, Australia, 590 paediatric patients undergoing grommet insertion between February 2017 and February 2018, 311 patients (205 males & 106 females; me

[Comments on the term "drainage"].

BACKGROUND: Use of the term "drainage" is inconsistent in clinical practice and the existing literature. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to clarify the meaning of the term and to raise awareness of its proper use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A selective literature search was performed. RESULTS: Drainage is the process of removing fluid but the term is often used interchangeably with the drain tube, which is often inserted at the same time, which is linguistically referred to as a metonymy. A tympanostomy tube is used for middle ear ventilation and pressure equalization. Lymphatic and absces

Does Helicobacter pylori have a role in the pathogenesis of otitis media with effusion, or is it a fallacy??

PURPOSE: Helicobacter pylori, causing chronic systemic infection, may colonize in middle ear milieu and conduce to effusion collection. Many investigations on relationship between pathogenesis of otitis media with effusion (OME) and Helicobacter pylori yielded conflicting results. We investigated Helicobacter pylori presence in effusion and adenoid samples of children having OME and in middle ear and adenoid samples of children with healthy middle ears to elucidate its role on OME pathogenesis. METHODS: This prospective case-control study included 300 patients aged 1-12 years. One-hundred eff

[The efficacy of tympanopunction in children with OMS].

INTRODUCTION: Otitis media with effusion is the most frequent cause of conductive hearing impairement (HL) at pediatric age. This entity can be asymptomatic for an important period of time (silent OME). There is a surgical and a nonsurgical approach for OME. In case of failure of conservative treatment of OME the ventilation tube insertion (VT) with adenoidectomy alone or combined with tonsillectomy should be choosed. If the hearing loss is less than 20 dB children are candidates for conservative treatment and myringotomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 1999 to 2003, 50 children with bilateral an

Experience in the management of sigmoid sinus thrombophlebitis secondary to middle ear cholesteatoma.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the management of sigmoid sinus thrombophlebitis secondary to middle ear cholesteatoma. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed all cases of sigmoid sinus thrombophlebitis caused by middle ear cholesteatoma over a period of 7 years. 7 male and 2 female patients, ranging in age from 9 to 66 years, were diagnosed with sigmoid sinus thrombophlebitis by clinical presentation and radiological examination. By executing a modified mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty (canal wall-down tympanoplasty) to entirely remove the cholesteatoma-like mastoid epithelium, all patients were effectiv

[Effect of surgical treatment of otitis media with effusion on children. Personal experience].

The authors present their observations upon surgically treated children with otitis media with effusion. The results are indicative of usefulness of ventilation tubes, myringotomy and adenoidectomy in the treatment of the otitis media with effusion in children. The efficiency of the treatment is based on the hearing examination and tympanometry, and the lack of recurrence of inflammation of the middle ear. 67.6% of cases revealed normal hearing.

Spatiotemporal characteristics of eustachian tube development in C57BL/6 mice: Correlation between morphological and functional maturation.

BACKGROUND: The eustachian tube (ET), a critical conduit connecting the middle ear and nasopharynx, is essential for normal middle ear function. However, it remains one of the least understood anatomical structures due to its complexity and the challenges of in vitro manipulation. Historically, these challenges have hindered research into the morphology and function development of the ET. This study elucidates the spatiotemporal relationship of ET morpho-functional maturation in mice, identifying key periods and factors that lay the theoretical foundation for exploring the molecular mechanisms

[Spectroscopic investigation of the middle ear mucosa].

BACKGROUND: The middle ear mucosa (MEM) plays a central role in the middle ear due to its function of providing regular ventilation. To date, assessment of the state of the MEM is only possible subjectively by the surgeon. An objective characterization of the state of the MEM is desirable. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to enable objective characterization of the MEM and test infrared (IR) spectroscopy as a possible diagnostic tool for clinical use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During middle ear surgery, 48 MEM samples were collected and divided into four groups according to clinical appeara

Unilateral ear fullness and temporary hearing loss diagnosed and successfully managed as a temporomandibular disorder: a case report.

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: A 73-year-old woman had a 4-month history of debilitating left-sided otic fullness, hearing loss, and a watery sensation in her ear without obvious cause. She had consulted with an otolaryngologist who cleared the ear of all middle ear pathology and then placed ventilation tubes in the tympanic membrane to relieve her symptoms of ear fullness. The ventilation tubes did not produce long-lasting relief so she was referred to the dental clinic. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient did not have substantial symptoms of jaw dysfunction or jaw pain and was clearly bothered more by

Critical evaluation of Per-Lee tubes in children.

A retrospective view of 37 Per-Lee tubes inserted into 29 patients over a period of four years. At the time of review all the tubes were in situ but eleven had to be removed due to recurrent otorrhoea or perforations causing increasing deafness particularly in children. Per-Lee tubes are not suitable for long-term ventilation of the middle ear cavity in children.

Immunohistochemical investigation of inducible nitric oxide synthase, osteopontin, and calcium-sensing receptor in a myringosclerosis/tympanosclerosis model.

HYPOTHESIS: To investigate roles of types of inflammation, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), osteopontin (OPN), and calcium sensing receptor (CaSR) in the tympanic membrane and middle ear in etiopathogenesis of myringosclerosis/tympanosclerosis (MT). BACKGROUND: Etiopathogenesis of myringosclerosis/tympanosclerosis is still unclear. Clinical and experimental observations demonstrate that hyperoxygenation might induce tympanosclerosis. METHODS: Seventy-five rats were divided into 3 groups: ventilation tube (VT) insertion, the Eustachian tube (ET) obliteration, and both procedures. Right

Baro-otolagia Secondary to Cholesteatoma.

BACKGROUND: Baro-otalgia is a common complaint among passengers in an aircraft, in particular those who had a recent upper respiratory tract infection. The underlying pathophysiology is secondary to unequal aeration of the middle ear cleft with the surrounding atmosphere and it can be explained using Boyle's Law. We describe an unusual presentation of baro-otalgia in a pilot secondary to cholesteatoma obstructing the aditus despite normal middle ear pressure equalization provided by a grommet in the ear. CASE REPORT: A 26-yr-old pilot with a presenting complaint of conductive hearing loss was
