Association Between Severity of Temporomandibular Disorders and the Frequency of Headache Attacks in Women With Migraine: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the magnitude of association of the severity of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in women with episodic and chronic migraine. METHODS: Thirty-one women with episodic migraine (mean age: 33 years), 21 with chronic migraine (mean age: 35 years) and 32 healthy controls (mean age: 31 years) were included. The Fonseca Anamnestic Index was applied to assess severity of TMDs. TMD severity was considered as follows: no TMD (0-19 points), mild TMD (20-49 points), moderate TMD (50-69 points), and severe TMD (70-100 points). To compare the proportion

Hemiplegic migraine, seizures, progressive spastic paraparesis, mood disorder, and coma in siblings with low systemic serotonin.

BACKGROUND: Serotonin has an important role in vascular resistance and blood pressure control, and a functional serotonin transporter polymorphism has been associated with migraine. Disturbances in serotonin metabolism have been associated with autism, depression, and myoclonus related conditions, but serotonin has far more functions in the body. Familial hemiplegic migraine is a rare autosomal dominant subtype of migraine with aura in which attacks are associated with hemiparesis. CASES: We present two siblings with hemiplegic migraine, depression, progressive spastic paraparesis, myelopathy

Migraine Risk in Multiple Sclerosis and Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder: A Nationwide Cohort Study in South Korea.

INTRODUCTION: Although the relationship between migraine and multiple sclerosis (MS) has been reported, the risk of migraine in MS and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the risk of migraine in the Korean MS and NMOSD populations. METHODS: This study analyzed claims data from 1,492 patients with MS and 1,551 patients with NMOSD based on diagnostic codes in the Korean National Health Insurance Service. Migraine risk was compared with a control group (matched 1:5 for age, sex, and comorbidities) using Cox proportional hazards analysis.

Preclinical studies investigating the neural mechanisms involved in the co-morbidity of migraine and temporomandibular disorders: the role of CGRP.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and migraine can be co-morbid. This can be a significant factor in exacerbating and increasing the prevalence of migraine-like symptoms. However, the underlying mechanisms involved are unknown. Our objective was to investigate these neural mechanisms and the role of CGRP as a key modulator in this co-morbidity. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: We combined experimental approaches using CGRP, which triggers a migraine-like response in patients, with that of masseteric muscle injection of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA), to model myofascial TMD-li

Pattern-reversal visual-evoked potentials in children with migraine and other primary headache: evidence for maturation disorder?

Recently, evidence for a disturbed maturation of cerebral information processing in migraine came from studies investigating the auditory-evoked contingent negative variation and the auditory-evoked potential from childhood to adulthood. This study is to clarify whether age-dependent development is altered also for the processing of visual stimuli in migraine. Components of pattern-reversal visual-evoked potentials at four different spatial frequencies (which can preferentially activate the magno- and the parvocellular visual system) were compared between children aged 6 and 18 years with prim

Efficacy and Safety of Non-invasive Brain Stimulation in Non-migraine Primary Headache Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Non-migraine primary headache disorders such as tension-type headache and cluster headache are often chronic and significantly impair quality of life, with limited effective treatment options. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques, including repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), have emerged as promising neuromodulatory therapies. This systematic review evaluated the effectiveness and safety of NIBS in reducing headache frequency and intensity in non-migraine primary headache disorders. METHODS:

The relationship between regional homogeneity in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and cognitive function in depressive disorders with migraine.

Patients with depressive disorder with migraine (DDWM) are common, yet the neural mechanisms and brain function changes associated with this comorbidity remain partially understood. This study explores regional homogeneity (ReHo) abnormalities in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and cognitive function in DDWM patients. We recruited 29 patients with DDWM, 34 patients with depressive disorder without migraine (DDWOM), and 43 matched healthy controls (HC). All participants underwent rs-fMRI scans, and imaging data were analyzed using ReHo. Cognitive function was assessed

A study to investigate the prevalence of headache disorders and migraine conducted using medical claims data and linked results from online surveys: post-hoc analysis of other headache disorders.

BACKGROUND: Surveys using questionnaires to collect epidemiologic data may be subject to misclassification. Here, we analyzed a headache questionnaire to evaluate which questions led to a classification other than migraine. METHODS: Anonymized surveys coupled with medical claims data from individuals 19-74 years old were obtained from DeSC Healthcare Inc. to examine proportions of patients with primary headache disorders (i.e.; migraine, tension-type headache, cluster headache, and "other headache disorders"). Six criteria that determined migraine were used to explore how people with other he

Interrelationships between migraine over the counter (OTC) painkillers and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Migraine during pregnancy is common and has been reported to affect up to 10% of pregnancies. Irrespective of the type of migraine, over the counter (OTC) painkillers are used as a migraine treatment plan. Growing evidence suggests that OTC painkillers have effects on the mother, the child and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, including hypertension, eclampsia and pre-eclampsia, but inconsistent findings have been reported. The aim of this study is therefore to investigate the association between the use of migraine OTC painkillers and hypertensive disorders during pregnancy. M

Migraine Is More Than Just Headache: Is the Link to Chronic Fatigue and Mood Disorders Simply Due to Shared Biological Systems?

Migraine is a symptomatically heterogeneous condition, of which headache is just one manifestation. Migraine is a disorder of altered sensory thresholding, with hypersensitivity among sufferers to sensory input. Advances in functional neuroimaging have highlighted that several brain areas are involved even prior to pain onset. Clinically, patients can experience symptoms hours to days prior to migraine pain, which can warn of impending headache. These symptoms can include mood and cognitive change, fatigue, and neck discomfort. Some epidemiological studies have suggested that migraine is assoc
