PURPOSE: To determine whether Demodex infestation in blepharitic patients can be confirmed by slit-lamp examination without the need for light microscopy.
METHODS: Demodex infestation was evaluated in 16 patients presenting with blepharitis and cylindrical dandruff at a single medical center from November 2014 to February 2015. Two lashes with cylindrical dandruff were epilated from each lid (8 per patient, total 128), mounted on slides, and examined in the clinic under a slit lamp equipped with a 90D condensing lens followed by light microscopy in the pathology laboratory. All evaluations we

Eleven Hereford or Angus-cross calves slightly to severely infested with common scabies mites (Psoroptes ovis) were treated with 22,23-dihydroavermectin B1a (ivermectin) at dosages given subcutaneously (SC)--300 micrograms/kg; orally--400 micrograms/kg; or IM--50, 100, or 200 micrograms/kg. At 14 days after treatment, live mites were not found on any of the calves treated SC or IM, but live mites were found on all of the orally treated calves at 14 days and on 1 of them at 28 days after treatment. Four nontreated calves retained their mite infestations during the course of the IM test. Biting

The inventory of coot (Fulico atra) ectoparasites during wintering season (October 2004-March 2005) has been carried out from 17 individuals captured in lake Tonga. Results show that mites are the most abundant parasites (65.6%), followed by lice (Pseudomenopon pilosum, Rallicolo fulicae, Fullicofulo lurida, Incidifrons fulicae, Laemobothrion atrum) 34.4% and leeches (Theromyzone sp) with 0.05%. All individuals were infested with lice, 82.4% with mites and 41.2% with leeches.

Species composition, seasonal dynamics, and a load of ectoparasites per individual and population of the common shrew Sorex araneus have been examined in coniferous and mixed forests of the Ilmen'-Volkhov lowland (a neighbourhood of Oskuy village, Chudovo district, Novgorod Province) during the period 1999-2003. Trapping of mammals was carried monthly, with exception of few accidental gaps. The Gero traps were used for catching micromammalian hosts. The lines of trap were checked 2 times a day, places of lines changed each 3-5 day. Total number of micromammalians collected during the period of

Skin lesions were collected from 15 adult crossbred pigs maintained at the pig farm of ICAR Research Complex for the North-Eastern Hill Region, Umiam, a hilly region of the state of Meghalaya, India. Skin scrapings of these 15 animals were examined by KOH digestion method. Presence of mites were detected in five animals which were indistinguishable from Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis. Infected pigs were treated with a single dose of Ivermectin at 200 ug/kg body weight, subcutaneously. No mites were recovered from treated pigs after a period of 10 days of post-treatment. The presence of S. scabiei

Hereford heifer calves were experimentally infested with Psoroptes ovis. Histologic examination of skin specimens was conducted at weekly intervals before and after treatment with ivermectin on postinfestation week 7. Electron microscopy revealed numerous degranulating mast cells in the skin of infested but not in control calves. many active, as well as degenerate, neutrophils were in the scab on infested calves. Microscopic epidermal ulcers developed on infested calves when live mites were present but not after treatment. Numbers of dermal neutrophils and plasma cells decreased and numbers of

Plant-pest interactions involve multifaceted processes encompassing a complex crosstalk of pathways, molecules, and regulators aimed at overcoming defenses developed by each interacting organism. Among plant defensive compounds against phytophagous arthropods, cyanide-derived products are toxic molecules that directly target pest physiology. Here, we identified the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) gene encoding hydroxynitrile lyase (AtHNL, At5g10300) as one gene induced in response to spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) infestation. AtHNL catalyzes the reversible interconversion between cyanoh

BACKGROUND: Northern fowl mites (Ornithonyssus sylviarum) are obligate hematophagous ectoparasites of both feral birds and poultry, particularly chicken layers and breeders. They complete their entire life-cycle on infested birds while feeding on blood. Infestations of O. sylviarum are difficult to control and resistance to some chemical classes of acaricides is a growing concern. The contact susceptibility of O. sylviarum to a new active ingredient, fluralaner, was evaluated, as well as other compounds representative of the main chemical classes commonly used to control poultry mite infestati

The lychee erinose mite, Aceria litchii (Keifer), is a tiny eriophyid mite known to induce the formation of open galls (erinea) on lychee plants, Litchi chinensis Sonn. In lychee infested by A. litchii, four stages of erineum are observed, based on erineum color: hyaline, white, amber and dark brown. The cause of the color change in erinea is unknown, but it might be linked to the extent of A. litchii infestation. Artificially infested lychee seedlings were used to determine the developmental time, trichome density, and mite population size in each of the four erineum stages. The effect of tem

BACKGROUND: Dermanyssus gallinae, known as bird mite, generally lives on nestlings' featherless skin. Humans are accidentally infected, and itchy dermatitis is induced when the mites are unable to use birds' blood. The diagnosis is difficult due to the very small size and rapid movement of the mites, which make them hard to spot.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old male and his mother were referred to the allergy clinic complaining of a 2-week generalized itchy cutaneous papular lesion, unresponsive to antihista-mines, with the feeling of an insect moving on the surface of the skin. Due to the h

Scanning electron microscopy revealed that lesions of sarcoptic mange in swine, pass through 3 different stages. During the first 3 weeks of infestation, adult female mites tunnel into the epidermis. During the following 3 or 4 weeks, the surface openings of these tunnels become covered with keratinized epidermal crust which increases in thickness. After 7 weeks of infestation, the crust falls off, the tunnel openings become apparent again and most of the mites vacate these tunnels.

Varroa jacobsoni was first described as a natural ectoparasitic mite of the Eastern honeybee (Apis cerana) throughout Asia. It later switched host to the Western honeybee (A. mellifera) and has now become a serious pest of that bee worldwide. The studies reported here on genotypic, phenotypic and reproductive variation among V. jacobsoni infesting A. cerana throughout Asia demonstrate that V. jacobsoni is a complex of at least two different species. In a new classification V. jacobsoni is here redefined as encompassing nine haplotypes (mites with distinct mtDNA CO-I gene sequences) that infest

BACKGROUND: The ear mite, Otodectes cynotis, is pathogenic, highly contagious and a global cause of otitis externa and pruritus in cats and dogs. The present study evaluated the efficacy of a single oral application of lotilaner flavoured chewable tablets for cats (Credelio™; Elanco, Greenfield, IN, USA) in cats experimentally infested with O. cynotis.
METHODS: Sixteen adult cats were experimentally infested with O. cynotis and confirmed to be mite positive by otoscopic examination. Infested cats were randomly assigned to one of two study groups. On day 0, a group of eight cats was treated on

Tokelau children have been examined for scabies infestation in three groups--those living in their home atolls--those living in New Zealand in 1972-73, and those living in New Zealand in 1975. There was less infestation in Tokelau than in New Zealand. In 1975 the rate of infestation in New Zealand had increased since 1972. The manifestation of the mite in children in New Zealand varied from the classical descriptions, in that the mite itself, and its burrows, were seldom found, and the skin lesions were more often seen on the body than on the wrists and hands. A treatment regime which was foun

The sheep scab mite, Psoroptes ovis, causes severe dermatitis in infected sheep with severe welfare and production implications. The dermatitis has the characteristics of an immediate hypersensitivity type reaction which, by analogy to other mite species, including the house dust mites (Dermatophagoides spp.), is likely to be invoked by a variety of allergens including mite-derived proteinases. Here, the proteinases in P. ovis extracts were characterised using substrate gel analysis, inhibitor sensitivity and their ability to degrade a variety of potential natural protein substrates. These ana

Sarcoptic mange is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei and has recently been recognized as an emerging infectious disease of wildlife worldwide. The mite is one of the main causes of population decline in southern hairy-nosed (Lasiorhinus latifrons) and bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus). This review focuses on Sarcoptes scabiei infestations in wombats and provides insights into why the disease may be so prevalent in wombats. Current treatment practices and trials conducted in the field to reduce the incidence of sarcoptic mange in wombats are described and critically reviewed. Current and
