Analysis of the Effect of Anatomical Variability on Atrial Fibrillation Dynamics Through a Novel Framework for Personalised Atrial Model Generation.

PURPOSE: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is both influenced by and contributes to atrial structural remodelling, including atrial enlargement and fibrosis. In this work, we aimed to understand how differences in atrial anatomy affect AF inducibility and dynamics, both without and with fibrosis, through in silico models. METHODS: Atrial wall anatomies from late gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (LGE-MRI) were used to generate personalised models. Detailed intra- and inter-atrial structures (pectinate muscles, Bachmann's bundle, fossa ovalis, coronary sinus, and fibre orientations) were m

Anatomical Group-Level Studies of the Volume of Tissue Activated by Deep Brain Stimulation in Parkinson's Disease: A Model for Targeting?

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder for which deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is an established treatment. Despite standardized programming, some patients seem to respond very well to DBS (optimal responders), while others seem to react poorly (poor responders). The objective was to compare the area of tissue activated between optimal and poor responders and determine whether there is a potential optimal stimulation area. METHODS: For 338 PD patients with STN-DBS, four outcome categories on the Movement Disorders

The Value of Using Patient-Specific 3D-Printed Anatomical Models in Surgical Planning for Patients With Complex Multifibroid Uteri.

OBJECTIVES: To compare surgeon responses regarding their surgical plan before and after receiving a patient-specific three-dimensional (3D)-printed model of a patient's multifibroid uterus created from their magnetic resonance imaging. METHODS: 3D-printed models were derived from standard-of-care pelvic magnetic resonance images of patients scheduled for surgical intervention for multifibroid uterus. Relevant anatomical structures were printed using a combination of transparent and opaque resin types. 3D models were used for 7 surgical cases (5 myomectomies, 2 hysterectomies). A staff surgeon

Wrist measurement for millimeter-wave non-invasive glucose monitoring: Numerical analysis of an anatomically realistic tissue model.

This paper shows the advantages of wrist measurement for millimeter-wave (MMW) non-invasive glucose monitoring based on an anatomically realistic tissue model. The wrist possesses not only its good accessibility but also its thin epidermis and the existence of a radial artery, which enable MMW to acquire blood signals with a high sensitivity. We analyze their scattering characteristics according to blood glucose change in a frequency range of 60-90 GHz. Analysis results indicate that MMW senses skin microvasculature and radial artery, leading to high sensitivity to blood glucose levels. This w

A combined radiomics and anatomical features model enhances MRI-based recognition of symptomatic nerves in primary trigeminal neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of primary trigeminal neuralgia (PTN) in radiology lacks the gold standard and largely depends on the identification of neurovascular compression (NVC) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) water imaging sequences. However, relying on this imaging sign alone often fails to accurately distinguish the symptomatic side of the nerve from asymptomatic nerves, and may even lead to incorrect diagnoses. Therefore, it is essential to develop a more effective diagnostic tool to aid radiologists in the diagnosis of TN. PURPOSE: This study aims to establish a radiomics-based ma

Modelling the multiple anatomical site transmission of Mycoplasma genitalium among men who have sex with men in Australia.

Mycoplasma genitalium (M. genitalium) is a recently recognised and important sexually transmitted infection among men who have sex with men (MSM). The role of oral sex, rimming, and kissing on M. genitalium transmission in MSM is unclear. We created four deterministic susceptible-infectious-susceptible epidemic models to examine the role that different sexual behaviours play in transmitting M. genitalium at the oropharynx, urethra anorectum among men who have sex with men in Australia. Our results suggest that oral and anal sex without other sexual practices (model 1) replicate well single sit

The use of three-dimensional anatomical patient-specific printed models in surgical clipping of intracranial aneurysm: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: In the present study, we aim to develop simulation models based on computed tomography angiography images of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) and their parent vessels using three-dimensional (3D) printing technology. The study focuses on the value of these 3D models in presurgical planning and intraoperative navigation and ultimately their impact on patient outcomes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of its kind from a war-torn country, like Iraq. METHODS: This is a prospective study of a series of 11, consecutively enrolled, patients suffering from IAs for the pe

Novel, anatomically appropriate balloon dilation technique of the glottis to treat posterior glottic stenosis in a 3D-printed model.

OBJECTIVE: Posterior glottic stenosis (PGS) often requires a destructive surgical treatment. Early PGS treatment involves glottic dilation to reduce airway constriction associated with chronic PGS. Round laryngeal dilation may not optimize posterior glottic dilation due to the teardrop shape of the glottis and may injure vocal fold tissue. We compared pressure applied to the glottis during traditional single balloon dilation and a novel, anatomically appropriate dilation technique (teardrop-shaped glottic dilation [TSGD]). METHODS: Pressure sensors were affixed at various points on a three-di

Anatomic Understanding of Posterior Quadrant Disconnection from Cadaveric Brain, 3D Reconstruction and Simulation Model, and Intraoperative Photographs.

BACKGROUND: Posterior quadrant disconnection is a surgery for refractory unilateral temporoparieto-occipital epilepsy to limit propagation of epileptic discharges. As incomplete disconnection can lead to residual seizures, detailed procedures are presented using a cadaveric brain, three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and simulation models, and intraoperative photographs. METHODS: A formalin-fixed adult cadaveric brain was dissected to show each step in posterior quadrant disconnection. Using 3D preoperative planning software, we reconstructed 3D models of operative views from computed tomogr

The electric field distributions in anatomical head models during transcranial direct current stimulation for post-stroke rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: The lack of knowledge of the electric field distribution inside the brain of stroke patients receiving transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) calls for estimating it computationally. Moreover, the impact on this distribution of a novel clinical management approach which involves secondary motor areas (SMA) in stroke rehabilitation needs to be evaluated. Finally, the differences in the electric field distributions due to gender and age need to be investigated. METHODS: This work presents the development of two different anatomical models (young adult female and elderly male) w

Altering management decisions with gained anatomical insight from a 3D printed model of a complex ventricular septal defect.

Rapid prototyping is quickly gaining utility in various complex forms of CHD. In properly selected cases, these printed models provide detailed anatomical understanding that help guide potential surgical and cardiac catheterisation interventions. We present a case of a tunnel-like ventricular septal defect referred for surgical repair, where the decision to obtain a three-dimensional printed model helped in better understanding of the anatomy, leading to delaying, and hopefully avoiding altogether, surgical repair.

Meniscus Induced Cartilaginous Damage and Non-linear Gross Anatomical Progression of Early-stage Osteoarthritis in a Canine Model.

BACKGROUND: The predictable outcome of the anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) canine model, and the similarity to naturally occurring osteoarthritis (OA) in humans, provide a translatable method for studying OA. Still, evidence of direct meniscus-induced cartilaginous damage has not been identified, and gross-anatomical blinded scoring of early-stage OA has not been performed. OBJECTIVE: A gross anatomical observation and statistical analysis of OA progression to determine meniscus induced cartilaginous damage, to measure the macroscopic progression of OA, and to address matters in

Osteoarthritis develops in the operated joint of an ovine model following ACL reconstruction with immediate anatomic reattachment of the native ACL.

We tested the hypothesis that immediate reattachment of the native anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) can prevent kinematic changes and the development of osteoarthritis (OA). Five sheep underwent anatomic unilateral ACL reconstruction (ACL-R). Animals from a previous study served as sham (n = 7) or non-operated (n = 17) controls. At 4 points of walking gait, 6 degrees of freedom stifle joint kinematics of ACL-R animals were compared with sham controls at 4 and 20 weeks post-surgery. Gross cartilage, bone, and meniscal changes were graded at euthanasia; paired and differential scores were compar

Malignant melanoma incidence in Connecticut (United States): time trends and age-period-cohort modeling by anatomic site.

This study examined time trends and age-period-cohort patterns in the incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) by gender and anatomic site in Connecticut (United States) between 1950 and 1989, using data from the population-based Connecticut Tumor Registry. A total of 8,249 invasive CMM incident cases were included. Cases were grouped into melanomas of the head and neck, upper limb, lower limb, and trunk. Between 1950 and 1989, rates increased substantially for all sites. The largest relative increases occurred in melanoma of the upper limb for both males and females; the largest absolu

Synthetic data augmentation for improving performance in deep learning models for anatomical landmark localization on the distal upper limb.

Precise anatomical landmark localization is critical for the therapeutic efficacy of Traditional Eastern Medicine, yet manual localization methods show inter-practitioner variability exceeding 5 mm. Deep learning can automate this process, but data scarcity limits model development. MetaHuman-rendered synthetic images offer a scalable alternative, though their texture fidelity and architecture-specific training effects remain underexplored. Six landmark localization models (HRNet-W32/W48; YOLO26-pose: small/medium/large/extra-large) were trained for five anatomical landmarks on the distal uppe

Computationally efficient x-ray simulation framework using parameterized material attenuation models in anatomically detailed imaging.

BACKGROUND: Virtual clinical trials provide an efficient alternative to clinical imaging trials for evaluating imaging technologies. In x-ray simulations, however, modeling material-specific attenuation becomes computationally intensive as anatomical complexity and material heterogeneity in digital phantoms increase. Parameterization models offer a potential solution by representing material properties with a compact set of coefficients. PURPOSE: To develop and validate an x-ray simulation framework that models material attenuation using parameterization models, reducing computational cost wh

Sex-specific shape models to disentangle sex effects and age-associated anatomical variation in biventricular cardiac anatomy.

AIMS: Age- and sex-related differences in cardiac anatomy are well established using conventional cardiovascular magnetic resonance biomarkers, but their representation in 3D ventricular shape remains unclear. In pooled statistical shape models, leading modes may be dominated by between-sex anatomical variation, potentially obscuring within-sex age-associated variation. This study evaluated whether sex-specific statistical shape models provide a more interpretable representation of age-associated ventricular variation than a sex-agnostic model. METHODS: Biventricular meshes were reconstructed

Assessment of brachial plexus and upper-extremity peripheral nerve injuries at the anatomical level using multimodal generative models.

INTRODUCTION: Injuries to the brachial plexus and its terminal branches can be devastating at the functional and occupational levels, as loss of even partial functions causes major disruptions in dexterity and mobility. The brachial plexus comprises multiple interconnected anatomical layers, making thorough anatomical knowledge essential for determining the extent of injury and the best treatment. Thus, the correlation between functional deficit and precise localization of the injury site is crucial to avoid extensive surgical explorations and restore anatomical integrity. METHOD: In this stu

Anatomical compatibility of precontoured clavicular locking compression plates: a 3D patient-specific modeling approach with clinical correlation.

BACKGROUND: Precontoured clavicular locking compression plates (LCP) aim to minimize implant-related complications by providing a close fit to the clavicle's complex morphology. Nevertheless, the inherent anatomical variation observed across patients can lead to discrepancies between implant and bone, potentially contributing to suboptimal fit and an increased risk of complications requiring reoperation. OBJECTIVE: This study analyzed the anatomical compatibility of precontoured clavicular LCPs, detailing their fit characteristics and exploring the correlation between these findings and clini
