Ecological, psychological, and cognitive components of reading difficulties: testing the component model of reading in fourth graders across 38 countries.

The authors tested the component model of reading (CMR) among 186,725 fourth grade students from 38 countries (45 regions) on five continents by analyzing the 2006 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study data using measures of ecological (country, family, school, teacher), psychological, and cognitive components. More than 91% of the differences in student difficulty occurred at the country (61%) and classroom (30%) levels (ecological), with less than 9% at the student level (cognitive and psychological). All three components were negatively associated with reading difficulties: cogni

Caregiver factors contributing to psychological elder abuse behavior in long-term care facilities: a structural equation model approach.

BACKGROUND: Identification of caregiver risk factors associated with psychological elder abuse is crucial for preventing and managing such abuse. The aim of this study was to test the most effective model for explaining caregiver factors contributing to caregiver psychological abuse behavior. We hypothesized that caregiver hours worked each day, years of education, age, geriatric care-giving training, gerontological care knowledge, social resources, and self-reported work stress are factors contributing to psychological abuse behavior of caregivers. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was

Evaluating Large Language Model-Derived Outputs as Psychological Measures: A Five-Domain Psychometric Framework With Application to Daily Stress.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used to quantify psychological constructs from natural language, yet their outputs are typically evaluated only as predictions of an external label. When that label is itself imperfect, optimizing prediction conflates label agreement with construct measurement. No study has applied a multidomain measurement-oriented evaluation to LLM-derived psychological outputs. OBJECTIVE: We applied 5 psychometric evaluation domains to LLM-derived outputs to test whether measurement-oriented evaluation surfaces properties that prediction-oriented ev

Quality of Life and Psychological Health after Recovery From Disorders of Consciousness: A Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems Study.

Patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC) resulting from severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) may recover consciousness and independence years later. There is a prevailing belief that recovery, when limited to the restoration of independence in activities of daily living, will be accompanied by poor self-reported quality of life (QOL) and psychological health. This perception may influence early clinical decision-making related to the provision of life-sustaining treatment and access to specialized rehabilitation. In this observational study, we utilized data from the multisite TBI Model S

The multifactor chain mediation model of anxiety in the MSM population: the pathways of perceived social support, self-esteem, and psychological resilience.

This study investigates how perceived social support is associated with anxiety among men who have sex with men (MSM). A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from March to June, 2024, recruiting 1,070 MSM participants via internet platforms. Measures included the Perceived Social Support Scale-12 (PSSS-12), Self-Esteem Scale-10 (SES), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-25 (CD-RISC-25), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7). Using PROCESS Model 6 and the Bootstrap method, a significant negative correlation was found between perceived social support and anxiety (r =  - 0.187, P < 0

Quality of life among people with substance use disorders: A serial mediation model considering self-stigma and psychological distress.

People with substance use disorders (PWSUDs) frequently experience multifaceted challenges, including depression, stigma, and social instability, which can negatively affect their quality of life (QoL). The present study explored the potential predictors of QoL among PWSUDs. The sample consisted of 300 PWSUDs (85% males; mean [SD] age = 44.73 [10.01] years), comprising equal groups of PWSUDs with amphetamine, opioid, and alcohol concerns. Variables such as education, employment, depression, self-esteem, and stigma were assessed. The Taiwan version of the World Health Organization Quality of Li

Nurses' work environment and health promotion in relation to psychological distress symptoms, and sleep disturbance: A structural equation modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: The healthcare work environment has numerous stressors that can contribute to distress and poor health outcomes among nurses. The impact of distress can be detrimental, resulting in nurses leaving the profession. Thus, it is critical to explore factors in the work environment that contribute to the distress symptoms and behaviors that promote nurses' health. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the constructs associated with the conceptual model of distress, such as the work environment, specifically workload and the practice environment (quality of care, salary, staffing, time,

Effect of CICARE communication nursing model combined with motivational psychological intervention in patients with post-intensive care unit syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) is a term used to describe a constellation of new or worsened dysfunctions in the physical, cognitive, or mental health status of critically ill patients after their discharge from the intensive care unit (ICU). These dysfunctions persist beyond the acute phase of illness and have a significant impact on both the patient and their family. Connect, Introduce, Communicate, Ask, Respond, Exit (CICARE) communication advocates that patients should be respected and accepted when receiving medical services. Clinicians should attach importance to the com

Physical Activity, Well-Being, and the Basic Psychological Needs: Adopting the SDT Model of Eudaimonia in a Post-Cardiac Rehabilitation Sample.

BACKGROUND: The theoretical conceptualisation of hedonic (HWB; pleasure) and eudaimonic (EWB; meaning) well-being has rarely been examined among cardiac rehabilitation (CR) graduates, including its relationship with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). First, this study examined the potential bidirectional relationship between MVPA and HWB/EWB. Second, this study tested the self-determination theory (SDT) model of eudaimonia where MVPA was set to predict the model's pathway between eudaimonic motives (seeking meaning), the basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedn

Bridging neuroscience and clinical psychology: cognitive behavioral and psychophysiological models in the evaluation and treatment of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Cognitive neuroscience and clinical psychology have long been considered to be separate disciplines. However, the phenomenon of brain plasticity in the context of a psychological intervention highlights the mechanisms of brain compensation and requires linking both clinical cognition and cognitive psychophysiology. A quantifiable normalization of brain activity seems to be correlated with an improvement of the tic symptoms after cognitive behavioral therapy in patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). This article presents broad outlines of the state of the current literature in the

Use of the Pyrithiamine-Induced Thiamine Deficient Animal Model of Korsakoff's Syndrome for Exploratory Research Activities in Undergraduate Physiological Psychology.

Undergraduate neuroscience laboratory activities frequently focus on exercises that build student's wet/dry laboratory skills, foster critical thinking, and provide opportunities for hands-on experiences. Such activities are, without a doubt, extremely important, but sometimes fall short of modeling actual research and often lack the 'Нет данных' hypothetical nature accompanying empirical studies. In this article we report a series of research activities using an animal model of Korsakoff's syndrome in a Physiological Psychology course. The activities involve testing hypotheses regarding performa

The impact of the psychodynamic model of depressive symptoms, psychological resilience, and egoism on the well-being among college students: a hybrid three-stage Fuzzy Delphi and structural equation modeling methodology.

BACKGROUND: The rising prevalence of depressive symptoms among college students has raised significant concerns regarding their mental and physical wellbeing. Grounded in psychodynamic theory, this study examines how depressive symptoms, psychological resilience, and egoism collectively influence psychological wellbeing. While existing literature acknowledges these factors independently, their integrated effects remain underexplored. This research addresses this gap by proposing psychological resilience as a mediator and egoism as a moderator, offering a novel theoretical framework for underst
