The carrier state of Moraxella bovis was investigated, using bacteriologic examinations of ocular and nasal secretions from cattle under experimental and natural conditions of exposure and management. Moraxella bovis was isolated throughout the year from the ocular and nasal secretions of cattle naturally affected with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. There was also 1 case of nasal transmission of M bovis without isolation of M bovis from ocular secretions and 1 case of M bovis isolation from the vagina of a calf contracted by contact with a calf affected with infectious bovine keratoco

A collection of strains of Moraxella bovis, some pathogenic and some non-pathogenic in cattle, together with other M. bovis preparations, Neisseria ovis, Staphylococcus aureus and Moraxella non-liquefaciens were studied by scanning electron microscopy for their affinity to bovine corneal preparations in vitro. The in vitro procedure provides a convenient method for studies on host-pathogen interactions at the early stage of pathogenesis. The results corresponded well with the pathogenicity of the respective strains and species in cattle. It is considered that the pathogenicity of M. bovis is a

Samples of conjunctival fluid of four calves, from a herd with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, were collected five times at monthly intervals and from another 16 calves in the initial stages of the disease, were collected only once. Moraxella bovis was recovered from 82.3% of the samples. Twenty-six isolates were typed with polyvalent sera and 25 with monovalent sera. The antibiotic sensitivity of 13 isolates was also studied. Twenty of the 26 isolates reacted with polyvalent sera and 16 of 25 tested isolates, reacted with monovalent sera. The isolates recovered from the same animal in

In studies to determine whether there were antigenic differences between strains (isolates) of Moraxella bovis, the sera from vaccinated calves were tested with isolates of M bovis while the calves were experiencing epizootics of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). Before the epizootics of IBK, the calves were intramuscularly vaccinated with a formalin-killed autogenous M bovis bacterin. During the epizootics, the eyes were examined by cultural technique, and isolates which were obtained were categorized by catalase activity, source (diseased or nondiseased eyes), and reactivity with

Moraxella lacunata is an emerging gram-negative bacterium that is responsible for multiple nosocomial infections. The bacterium is evolving resistance to several antibiotics, and currently, no effective licensed vaccines are available, which warrants the search for new therapeutics. A multi-epitope-based vaccine has been designed for M. lacunata. The complete proteome of M. lacunata contains 10,110 core proteins. Subcellular localization analysis revealed the presence of five proteins in the extracellular matrix, while 19 proteins were predicted to be located in the outer membrane, and 21 prot

Moraxella catarrhalis is an important and common respiratory pathogen that can cause Otitis Media, Community Acquired Pneumonia, and has been associated with an increased risk of exacerbations in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in adults, leading to morbidity and mortality. Its ubiquitous surface protein A2 (UspA2) has been shown to interact with host structures and extracellular matrix proteins, suggesting a role at an early stage of infection and a contribution to bacterial serum resistance. The UspA proteins are homo-trimeric autotransporters that appear as a lollipop-shaped structure

Moraxella catarrhalis and nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) are pathogenic bacteria frequently associated with exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), whose hallmark is inflammatory oxidative stress. Neutrophils produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can boost antimicrobial response by promoting neutrophil extracellular traps (NET) and autophagy. Here, we showed that M. catarrhalis induces less ROS and NET production in differentiated HL-60 cells compared to NTHi. It is also able to actively interfere with these responses in chemically activated cells in a ph

The Gram-negative bacterium Moraxella bovoculi is associated with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), colloquially known as 'pink-eye'. IBK is an extremely contagious ocular disease of cattle. We report here the structure of the oligosaccharide derived from the lipooligosaccharide from M. bovoculi type strain 237 (also known as ATCC BAA-1259T). GLC-MS and correlation NMR analysis of the oligosaccharide revealed 5 sugar residues, with a notable central branched 3,4,6-α-D-Glcp. An additional α-D-Manp was present ~30% on the sub-terminal α-D-Manp of the 4-linked branch. This oligosaccha

Moraxella bovoculi is the most frequently isolated bacteria from the eyes of cattle with Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), also known as bovine pinkeye. Two distinct genotypes of M. bovoculi, genotype 1 and genotype 2, were characterized after whole genome sequencing showed a large degree of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) diversity within the species. To date, both genotypes have been isolated from the eyes of cattle without clinical signs of IBK while only genotype 1 strains have been isolated from the eyes of cattle with clinical signs of IBK. We used 38 known genotype 1 st

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) has been associated with ocular infections by Moraxella bovis, the established etiologic agent of IBK, and more recently, Moraxella bovoculi, a recently described species of Moraxella. To assist in designing rational treatment regimens for M. bovoculi infections associated with IBK, the in vitro susceptibilities of 57 M. bovoculi field isolates cultured from eyes of cattle with IBK in California from 2002 through 2007 were determined. The minimum inhibitory concentration required to inhibit the growth of 90% of organisms (MIC(90)) of the following 1

Moraxella bovis is the causative agent of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) also known as pinkeye, a highly contagious and painful eye disease that is common in cattle throughout the world. Vaccination appears to be a reasonable and cost-effective means of control of pinkeye. Identification of genes encoding novel secreted antigens have been reported, and these antigens are being assessed for use in a vaccine. One of the genes encodes phospholipase B, which can be expressed with high purity and yield in recombinant Escherichia coli as a secreted, soluble, non-tagged, mature construc

Mouse sera against outer membrane proteins from Moraxella catarrhalis, Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria lactamica, and human sera from both healthy individuals and patients convalescing from meningococcal meningitis were used to identify cross-reactive antigens. Mouse anti-N. meningitidis and anti-N. lactamica sera recognized 77, 62 and 32 kDa outer membrane antigens in M. catarrhalis strains; on the contrary, the meningococcal porin PorB (38-42 kDa) was recognized by one of the two anti-M. catarrhalis sera. Human sera from both healthy individuals and patients convalescing from meningococ

We report the first case of a central venous catheter infection caused by Moraxella osloensis, which was successfully treated without catheter removal. The isolation, identification, and pathogenesis of this species are discussed. It is recommended that Moraxella isolates be identified to species in order to determine the relative pathogenic and opportunistic roles of the various Moraxella species. Our case also demonstrates that catheter sepsis caused by some Gram-negative organisms may be amenable to systemic antibiotic therapy without the necessity of catheter removal.

Calves vaccinated with a bacterin prepared from 4 nonhemolytic strains of Moraxella bovis were challenge exposed with a virulent hemolytic strain of M bovis. Ten calves were given 2 vaccinal inoculations 21 days apart. Twenty-one days after the last vaccinal inoculation, the eyes of the 10 vaccinated and the eyes of the 12 non-vaccinated calves were exposed to a hemolytic heterologous strain of M bovis. The percentage of eyes with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis was lower, the lesions were less severe, and the duration of infection was shorter in vaccinated calves than in nonvaccinated

BACKGROUND: Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) and Moraxella catarrhalis are recognized as the key pathogens that cause respiratory tract infections, and both are capable of forming biofilms. Although interspecies biofilm formation has been described, the impact of co-culture conditions on antimicrobial responsiveness remains incompletely defined. In this study, we examined biofilm formation by co-culturing NTHi and M. catarrhalis and evaluated their antimicrobial responsiveness to amoxicillin and alternative clinically relevant antibiotics, including sequential exposure following initi
