Insecticidal potential of Lantana camara L. ethanol and nano-silver extracts against the potato tuber moth (Phthorimaea operculella [Zeller]).

The extensive reliance on synthetic pesticides has led to considerable ecological disruption and negative impacts on non-target organisms worldwide. As a sustainable alternative, nanotechnology offers promising avenues for the development of innovative and environmentally safe biopesticides. In this study, the insecticidal efficacy of ethanol and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) extracts derived from Lantana camara L. was evaluated against the eggs and larvae of the Potato Tuber Moth (Phthorimaea operculella [Zeller, 1873]), a quarantine pest of major concern in potato production in Türkiye. Toxic

Moth-Eaten Osteolysis of Multiple Foot Bones After a Conservatively Treated "Stable" Ankle Fracture: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Progressive multifocal "moth-eaten" osteolysis involving foot and ankle bones after nonoperative treatment of a stable ankle fracture is rare and warrants evaluation for infectious, neoplastic, inflammatory, vascular, and mechanical causes. Vigilant follow-up, serial imaging, laboratory testing, vascular assessment, and multidisciplinary review can enable early diagnosis and timely, individualized management.

Norfloxacin inhibited the growth, development and reproduction of Grapholita molesta by reducing the abundance of Enterobacteriaceae bacteria in the guts of larva and ovaries of female moth.

While antibiotics are occasionally used in orchard bacterial disease management, their ecological impacts remain understudied. This investigation reveals significant sublethal effects of norfloxacin on the key fruit tree pest Grapholita molesta (oriental fruit moth). Our results showed that the antibiotic norfloxacin induced multiple developmental alterations by reducing the abundance of Enterobacteriaceae bacteria in the larval guts and adult ovaries: larval stage prolongation (+8.64 %), reduced pupal weight (-6.95 %), shortened adult period (-9.55 %), and impaired female fecundity with 24.77

Mechanisms mediating false codling moth, Thaumatotibia leucotreta (lepidoptera: Tortricidae), mating disruption using point-source pheromone dispensers.

BACKGROUND: False codling moth (FCM) is a polyphagous Tortricid moth that is a priority agricultural pest. Mating disruption shows potential as an environmentally friendly and sustainable control option against FCM in stone fruit, table grapes and citrus. How the technique alters the mate-finding ability of FCM and what factors are important to ensure the control success is uncertain. Recent work indicated that Lepidoptera are disrupted either competitively or non-competitively. No studies have yet been conducted on FCM to determine its disruptive mechanism. However, studies conducted on close

Encapsulation of Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil and of its main components in cyclodextrin: application to the control of the date moth Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Pyralidae).

BACKGROUND: Synthetic insecticides are the most useful tools for preventing losses caused by insect pest's infestation during storage. However, the use of pesticides should be limited because of the development of insect resistance and their adverse effects on human health and environment. In the last decades, natural insecticidal products, principally essential oils (EOs) and their active components, exhibited potential alternatives for pest control. Nevertheless, due to their volatile nature, encapsulation could be considered as the most appropriate solution. Therefore, this work aims to inv

Engineered expression of the invertebrate-specific scorpion toxin AaHIT reduces adult longevity and female fecundity in the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella.

BACKGROUND: Previous genetic pest management (GPM) systems in diamondback moth (DBM) have relied on expressing lethal proteins ('effectors') that are 'cell-autonomous', that is, they do not leave the cell in which they are expressed. To increase the flexibility of future GPM systems in DBM, we aimed to assess the use of a non-cell-autonomous, invertebrate-specific, neurotoxic effector - the scorpion toxin AaHIT. This AaHIT effector was designed to be secreted by expressing cells, potentially leading to effects on distant cells, specifically neuromuscular junctions. RESULTS: Expression of AaHI

Attraction of Three Mirid Predators to Tomato Infested by Both the Tomato Leaf Mining Moth Tuta absoluta and the Whitefly Bemisia tabaci.

Plants emit volatile compounds in response to insect herbivory, which may play multiple roles as defensive compounds and mediators of interactions with other plants, microorganisms and animals. Herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) may act as indirect plant defenses by attracting natural enemies of the attacking herbivore. We report here the first evidence of the attraction of three Neotropical mirid predators (Macrolophus basicornis, Engytatus varians and Campyloneuropsis infumatus) toward plants emitting volatiles induced upon feeding by two tomato pests, the leaf miner Tuta absoluta and

Courtship behavior of the castniid palm borer, Paysandisia archon: potential roles of male scents and visual cues in a day-flying moth.

The castniid palm borer, Paysandisia archon (Burmeister) (Lepidoptera: Castniidae), is a South American moth that in the last ten years has become a major pest of palm trees in the Mediterranean region. Current knowledge on the reproductive behavior of this diurnal moth suggests the importance of both visual and chemical cues, in particular the production of a male pheromone emitted during a specific scratching behavior. Male-produced scents have diverse functions in lepidopteran sexual communication but generally act during courtship behavior, leading to complex, stereotyped courtship sequenc

Female Moth Calling and Flight Behavior Are Altered Hours Following Pheromone Autodetection: Possible Implications for Practical Management with Mating Disruption.

Female moths are known to detect their own sex pheromone-a phenomenon called "autodetection". Autodetection has various effects on female moth behavior, including altering natural circadian rhythm of calling behavior, inducing flight, and in some cases causing aggregations of conspecifics. A proposed hypothesis for the possible evolutionary benefits of autodetection is its possible role as a spacing mechanism to reduce female-female competition. Here, we explore autodetection in two species of tortricids (Grapholita molesta (Busck) and Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris)). We find that females of

Hemocyte-hemocyte adhesion and nodulation reactions of the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella are influenced by cholera toxin and its B-subunit.

Nodulation, the lepidopteran insect immune response to large numbers of microbes in the blood (hemolymph) consists of the coordination of the blood cell (hemocyte) types the granular cells and plasmatocytes in terms of granular cell-bacteria adhesion and hemocyte-hemocyte adhesion (microaggregation). Hemocyte-microbe adhesion is influenced by the secondary messenger, cAMP, and cAMP-dependent protein kinase A. In the present study, cholera toxin, an AB5 protein known to indirectly stimulate adenylate cyclase, is used to examine the hemocyte responses to glass, bacteria and hemocyte-hemocyte mic

Characterization of plant growth-promoting traits of bacteria isolated from larval guts of diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (lepidoptera: plutellidae).

Eight bacterial isolates from the larval guts of Diamondback moths (Plutella xylostella) were tested for their plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits and effects on early plant growth. All of the strains tested positive for nitrogen fixation and indole 3-acetic acid (IAA) and salicylic acid production but negative for hydrogen cyanide and pectinase production. In addition, five of the isolates exhibited significant levels of tricalcium phosphate and zinc oxide solubilization; six isolates were able to oxidize sulfur in growth media; and four isolates tested positive for chitinase and beta-1,3-glu

Stimulation of cyclic AMP formation and nerve electrical activity by octopamine in the terminal abdominal ganglion of the female gypsy moth Lymantria dispar.

The biogenic amine octopamine is known to be present in the abdominal ganglia of some insects, but the expression of functional octopamine receptors in these neuronal structures has not yet been characterized. In the present study, we describe the presence in the female gypsy moth terminal abdominal ganglion (TAG), a key structure in the control of the insect reproductive behavior, of an octopamine receptor coupled to stimulation of adenylyl cyclase through the GTP-binding protein G(s). The rank order of potency of different antagonists, which discriminate between the different classes of octo

Genome sequence analysis of baculoviruses from the noctuid moths Eudryas unio and Autographa gamma indicates that they are isolates of Betabaculovirus xecnigri, a species of slow-killing granuloviruses.

Complete genome sequences were determined for three uncharacterized betabaculoviruses (Baculoviridae: Lefavirales) from noctuid moth species. These viruses included Eudryas unio granulovirus 1112 (EuunGV-1112), Eudryas unio granulovirus 1229 (EuunGV-1229), and Autographa gamma granulovirus Darmstadt (AugaGV-Darmstadt). Analysis of the features and open reading frame (ORF) contents of the genome sequences indicated that all three viruses were closely related to Helicoverpa armigera granulovirus (HearGV; Betabaculovirus helarmigerae) and Xestia c-nigrum granulovirus (XecnGV; Betabaculovirus xecn

Bio-inspired composite structures derived from the moth model enable compatible stealth across the radar-infrared/visible light spectrum.

Although biomimetic models show promise for enhancing stealth materials, designing effective multispectral stealth systems remains challenging. Inspired by the antireflective microstructures of moths - including their compound eyes, villi, and wing microstructures - we develop a composite biomimetic model integrating multiple antireflective structures to achieve multispectral stealth across radar, infrared, and visible light bands. The carbonyl iron powder (CIP) composite with biomimetic grating-hole structures demonstrates effectively scatters incident microwaves while promoting surface wave

The Transcription of Flight Energy Metabolism Enzymes Declined with Aging While Enzyme Activity Increased in the Long-Distance Migratory Moth, Spodoptera frugiperda.

Of all the things that can fly, the flight mechanisms of insects are possibly the least understood. By using RNAseq, we studied the aging-associated gene expression changes in the thorax of Spodoptera frugiperda females. Three possible flight energy metabolism pathways were constructed based on 32 key metabolic enzymes found in S. frugiperda. Differential expression analysis revealed up to 2000 DEGs within old females versus young ones. Expression and GO and KEGG enrichment analyses indicated that most genes and pathways related to energy metabolism and other biological processes, such as tran

Potential biological control of the pupal stage of the European grapevine moth Lobesia botrana by the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria pseudobassiana in the winter season in Chile.

OBJECTIVE: Lobesia botrana, the European grapevine moth, affects Vitis vinifera L. and other species of economic importance in a number of countries through damage caused by its larvae in berries and associated secondary diseases such as Botrytis cinerea. Control of the moth in urban areas is difficult due to poor chemical management of infested plants in houses. Additionally, in winter, L. botrana is in its pupal stage covered with a cocoon that prevents the penetration of chemical pesticides. For this reason, the objective of this work was to control the pupal stage with a formulation based

A herbivore-induced plant volatile of the host plant acts as a collective foraging signal to the larvae of the meadow moth, Loxostege sticticalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae).

The meadow moth Loxostege sticticalis is a serious agricultural pest that feeds on the leaves of many economic crops, such as sugar beet, soybean, sunflower, and potato. In addition to the rapid migration of adult moths, the collective foraging behavior of the larvae is also thought to be involved in the search for new food sources and substantially contributes to the expansion of the infested area. However, whether and how the chemical signals take part in this process remains unknown. In this study, two larva-specific expressed odorants, LstiOR5 and LstiOR6, were successfully cloned and deop

Role of host feeding niches and host refuges in habitat-related behaviour of Hyssopus pallidus (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), a larval parasitoid of the codling moth.

Parasitoid fitness depends largely on the capability to locate a host in an ecosystem. A parasitoid of a polyphagous host might not be able to find or to access the host in all its feeding niches. This study evaluated the niche selection of Hyssopus pallidus (Askew), a larval parasitoid of Cydia pomonella (Linnaeus), at the plant level with the goal of assessing its potential for biological control on different fruit crops throughout the plant cycle. Parasitoid behaviour during host location and reproduction rate were investigated on host caterpillars actively feeding on apple, pear, apricot o
