Total knee arthroplasty in Asian subjects: preoperative range of motion determines postoperative range of motion?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether preoperative range of motion is a key determinant of postoperative range of motion in Asian patients undergoing conventional total knee arthroplasty. METHODS: A retrospective review of 302 patients who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty performed by a single surgeon was conducted. Patients who had a fixed flexion deformity of ≥15° were excluded. Postoperative range of motion (ROM) was measured prospectively. Patients were stratified into two groups: preoperative ROM < 110° and preoperative ROM ≥ 110°. Postoperative ROM and mean change in ROM at 6 months a

Trend-Centric Motion Visualization: Designing and Applying a New Strategy for Analyzing Scientific Motion Collections.

In biomechanics studies, researchers collect, via experiments or simulations, datasets with hundreds or thousands of trials, each describing the same type of motion (e.g., a neck flexion-extension exercise) but under different conditions (e.g., different patients, different disease states, pre- and post-treatment). Analyzing similarities and differences across all of the trials in these collections is a major challenge. Visualizing a single trial at a time does not work, and the typical alternative of juxtaposing multiple trials in a single visual display leads to complex, difficult-to-interpr

Fully automatic nonrigid registration-based local motion estimation for motion-corrected iterative cardiac CT reconstruction.

PURPOSE: Cardiac computed tomography is a rapidly emerging technique for noninvasive diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, the cardiac motion continues to be a limiting factor. Electrocardiogram-gated cardiac computed tomography reconstruction methods yield excellent results, but these are limited in their temporal resolution due to the mechanical movement of the gantry, and lead to residual motion blurring artifacts. If the motion of the cardiac region of interest is determined, motion compensated gated reconstructions can be applied to reduce motion artifacts. In this paper it

Facial motion analysis of acid burn victims--development of a new facial motion impairment index.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluation of facial movement is necessary for the assessment of motor deficits and planning reconstructive surgery in facial burns. Clinicians recognise the need for an accurate and reproducible method of functional assessment. We propose a new facial functional impairment index (FFII) for assessing facial motor dysfunction due to severe burn injury and provide inter/intra-patient comparison for documenting rehabilitation. METHODS: The maximal static response assay (MSRA) was used to compare facial movement in 20 acid burn victims with 20 control subjects. Data compiled from 12 s

Objective and subjective time courses of recovery from motion sickness assessed by repeated motion challenges.

The aim of this study was to determine whether the time course of recovery of tolerance, as assessed objectively by rechallenge with motion, paralleled the subjective recovery from motion sickness. Subjects (n = 20) were exposed to 5 pairs of nauseogenic motion challenges in which the time interval between the end of the first and the start of the second of each pair ranged from 15 min to 2 h. The cross-coupled motion challenge had an incrementing profile of rotational velocity from 4 degrees to 92 degrees.s-1 in steps of 4 degrees.s-1 every 30 s, with 8 head movements per 30 s, of approximate

Confinement-Induced Motion of Ciliates.

The time dynamics of flagellar and ciliary beating is often neglected in theories of microswimmers, with the most common models prescribing a time-constant actuation of the surrounding fluid. By explicitly introducing a metachronal wave, coarse-grained to a sinusoidal surface slip velocity, we show that a spatial resonance between the metachronal wave and the corrugation of a confining cylindrical channel enables a ciliate to swim even when it cannot move forward in a bulk fluid. Using lubrication theory, we reduce the problem to the Adler equation that reveals an oscillatory and steady swimmi

How Omecamtiv Modulates Myosin Motion.

Myosin VI is a unique reverse-directed motor protein in the myosin family. The D179Y mutation in Myosin VI is associated with deafness in mammals. This mutation destroys the processive motion of myosin and inhibits its functional activity due to an elevated phosphate release rate. The current work explores the way by which this mutation affects the phosphate release rate and changes the action of Myosin VI. Our study involves a wide range of approaches comprising free energy-based simulations, contact map analysis, binding energy investigation, structural inspection, renormalization simulation

Acoustic-driven magnetic skyrmion motion.

Magnetic skyrmions have great potential for developing novel spintronic devices. The electrical manipulation of skyrmions has mainly relied on current-induced spin-orbit torques. Recently, it was suggested that the skyrmions could be more efficiently manipulated by surface acoustic waves (SAWs), an elastic wave that can couple with magnetic moment via the magnetoelastic effect. Here, by designing on-chip piezoelectric transducers that produce propagating SAW pulses, we experimentally demonstrate the directional motion of Néel-type skyrmions in Ta/CoFeB/MgO/Ta multilayers. We find that the shea

Corrective mechanisms of motion extrapolation.

Transmission and processing of sensory information in the visual system takes time. For motion perception, our brain can overcome this intrinsic neural delay through extrapolation mechanisms and accurately predict the current position of a continuously moving object. But how does the system behave when the motion abruptly changes and the prediction becomes wrong? Here we address this question by studying the perceived position of a moving object with various abrupt motion changes by human observers. We developed a task in which a bar is monotonously moving horizontally, and then motion suddenl

Body motion of choral singers.

Recent investigations on music performances have shown the relevance of singers' body motion for pedagogical as well as performance purposes. However, little is known about how the perception of voice-matching or task complexity affects choristers' body motion during ensemble singing. This study focussed on the body motion of choral singers who perform in duo along with a pre-recorded tune presented over a loudspeaker. Specifically, we examined the effects of the perception of voice-matching, operationalized in terms of sound spectral envelope, and task complexity on choristers' body motion. F

Chiral motion in colloidal electrophoresis.

Asymmetrically charged, nonspherical colloidal particles in general perform complex rotations and oblique motions under an electric field. The interplay of electrostatic and hydrodynamic forces complicates the prediction of these motions. We demonstrate a method of calculating the body tensors that dictate translational and rotational velocity vectors arising from an external electric field. We treat insulating rigid bodies in the linear-response regime, with indefinitely small electrostatic screening length. The method represents the body as an assembly of point sources of both hydrodynamic d

Basal Ganglia-A Motion Perspective.

The basal ganglia represent an ancient part of the nervous system that have remained organized in a similar way over the last 500 million years and are of importance for our ability to determine which actions to choose at any given moment in time. Salient or reward stimuli act via the dopamine system and contribute to motor or procedural learning (reinforcement learning). The input stage of the basal ganglia, the striatum, is shaped by glutamatergic input from the cortex and thalamus and by the dopamine system. All intrinsic neurons of the striatum are GABAergic and inhibitory except for the c

Intranasal Scopolamine for Motion Sickness.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid onset, noninjection methods are required to provide "as needed" therapy for motion sickness. Intranasal scopolamine (IN SCOP) is attractive because it can be fast acting and work when gastric motility is slowed. Intranasal administration can provide a time to maximal concentration (Tmax) of drugs (e.g., naloxone and midazolam) of 30 min or less. We evaluated the efficacy, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacokinetics of IN SCOP in a placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind, dose-ranging study, and compared pharmacokinetic outcomes against other published results.METHODS: There

Meniere's, migraine, and motion sickness.

CONCLUSION: Elevated Motion Sickness Susceptibility (MSS) in Meniere?s disease (MD) is likely to be a consequence of the onset of MD and not migraine per se. OBJECTIVES: Pathologies of the vestibular system influence MSS. Bilateral vestibular deficits lower MSS, vestibular neuritis or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo have little overall effect, whereas vestibular migraine elevates MSS. However, less is known about MSS in MD, a condition in which many patients experience vestibular loss and migraine symptoms. METHODS: The authors conducted an online survey that posed diagnostic and diseas

Breast motion asymmetry during running.

Breast asymmetry is common in females, despite a similar driving force; dynamic activity may result in asymmetrical breast motion. This preliminary study investigated how breast categorisation (left/right or dominant/non-dominant) may affect breast support recommendations and its relationship with breast pain. Ten females ran on a treadmill at 10 kph in three breast supports (no bra, everyday bra, sports bra). Five reflective markers on the thorax and nipples were tracked using infrared cameras (200 Hz) during five running gait cycles in each breast support. Multiplanar displacements of both b

Motion sickness on tilting trains.

Trains that tilt on curves can go faster, but passengers complain of motion sickness. We studied the control signals and tilts to determine why this occurs and how to maintain speed while eliminating motion sickness. Accelerometers and gyros monitored train and passenger yaw and roll, and a survey evaluated motion sickness. The experimental train had 3 control configurations: an untilted mode, a reactive mode that detected curves from sensors on the front wheel set, and a predictive mode that determined curves from the train's position on the tracks. No motion sickness was induced in the until

[Parallel processing of motion vision].

Several neuropsychological studies have reported dissociation between motion vision and object vision. One patient with motion blindness had a bilateral MT/V5 lesion and could see objects, but could not see the motion of the objects (Zihl et al, 1983). By contrast, some blindsight patients with primary visual cortex lesions cannot see objects but can see their movement (e.g. Riddoch, 1917). These results imply that movement vision and form vision rely on independent mechanisms. However one patient with motion blindness had controversial symptoms concerning motion vision. She could not perceive
