BACKGROUND: The rotational vestibulo-ocular reflex (rVOR) generates compensatory eye movements in response to rotational head accelerations. The velocity-storage mechanism (VSM), which is controlled by the vestibulo-cerebellar nodulus and uvula, determines the rVOR time constant. In healthy subjects, it has been suggested that self-motion perception in response to earth-vertical axis rotations depends on the VSM in a similar way as reflexive eye movements. We aimed at further investigating this hypothesis and speculated that if the rVOR and rotational self-motion perception share a common VSM,

Current augmentative and alternative communication technologies allow animation within visual symbol displays. Clinicians therefore have the option of incorporating motion-based effects into AAC displays. Yet there is no research in the field of AAC to guide this clinical decision-making, in terms of the number or types of animated symbols that would best suit specific communication needs. A great deal is known within the discipline of cognitive neuroscience about how humans perceive motion, however. In this paper we propose that the field of AAC might exploit these known principles of motion

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is the most prevalent musculoskeletal problem among adults. Individuals with chronic LBP (CLBP) can present a psychological disorder and a lack of pain self-efficacy.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to compare the process of repetition-induced summation of activity-related pain, the lumbar range of motion, and the postural stability of patients with non-specific LBP (NSLBP) based on their level of self-efficacy.
STUDY DESIGN: This research used a descriptive, cross-sectional study design.
METHODS: This research included 60 patients with NSCLBP. Pa

Because object and self-motion are ubiquitous in natural viewing conditions, understanding how the human visual system achieves a relatively clear perception for moving objects is a fundamental problem in visual perception. Several studies have shown that the visible persistence of a briefly presented stationary stimulus is approximately 120 ms under normal viewing conditions. Based on this duration of visible persistence, we would expect moving objects to appear highly blurred. However, in human vision, objects in motion typically appear relatively sharp and clear. We suggest that clarity of

BACKGROUND: Impaired face emotion recognition (FER) and abnormal motion processing are core features in schizophrenia (SZ) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that have been linked to atypical activity within the visual cortex. Despite overlaps, only a few studies have directly explored convergent versus divergent neural mechanisms of altered visual processing in ASD and SZ. We employed a multimodal imaging approach to evaluate FER and motion perception in relation to functioning of subcortical and cortical visual regions.
METHODS: Subjects were 20 high-functioning adults with ASD, 19 patients

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a heritable neurodevelopmental reading disorder that could arise from auditory, visual, and cross-modal integration deficits. A deletion in intron 2 of the DCDC2 gene (hereafter DCDC2d) increases the risk for DD and related phenotypes. In this study, first we report that illusory visual motion perception-specifically processed by the magnocellular-dorsal (M-D) stream-is impaired in children with DD compared with age-matched and reading-level controls. Second, we test for the specificity of the DCDC2d effects on the M-D stream. Children with DD and DCDC2d need sig

BACKGROUND: The main clinical symptoms characteristic of Parkinson's disease (PD) are bradykinesia, tremor, and other motor deficits. However, non-motor symptoms, such as visual disturbances, can be identified at early stages of the disease. One of these symptoms is the impairment of visual motion perception. Hence, we sought to determine if the starburst amacrine cells, which are the main cellular type involved in motion direction selectivity, are degenerated in PD and if the dopaminergic system is related to this degeneration.
METHODS: Human eyes from control (n = 10) and PD (n = 9) donors

OBJECTIVE: Although research has shown that deficits in various cognitive functions may underlie obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), studies have not yet clarified the specificity and etiology of perception processing, particularly the perception of biological motion that is correlated with social cognition. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate neural activity associated with the perception of biological motion in OCD patients.
METHODS: The subjects were 15 patients with OCD and 15 age- and IQ-matched healthy volunteers. All subjects participated in a biologica

INTRODUCTION: Spasticity and altered muscle tone are key features in children with neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly cerebral palsy (CP). They impact movement, range of motion (ROM), and pain perception, influencing functional abilities and quality of life. Understanding the intrinsic muscle differences in children with CP can help improve clinical assessment and therapeutic interventions. This study aims to evaluate differences in muscle tone, stiffness, ROM, and pain perception between children with CP and typically developing peers using objective biomechanical measures.
METHODS:

Self-motion perception and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) were studied during whole body yaw rotation in the dark at different static head positions. Rotations consisted of four cycles of symmetric sinusoidal and asymmetric oscillations. Self-motion perception was evaluated by measuring the ability of subjects to manually track a static remembered target. VOR was recorded separately and the slow phase eye position (SPEP) was computed. Three different head static yaw deviations (active and passive) relative to the trunk (0°, 45° to right and 45° to left) were examined. Active head deviations had

The principal pathways serving higher visual function comprise the dorsal stream and the ventral stream. The dorsal stream runs between the occipital lobes and the parietal lobes and subserves the ability to process the whole visual scene and carry out visually guided movement. The ventral stream runs between the occipital lobes and temporal lobe tissue and primarily subserves visual recognition and memory. These tissues are susceptible to dysfunction in children with brain damage. We report a series of 40 children in whom damage to the brain has led to a common symptom complex affecting visio

Damage to the human homologue of area MT produces a motion perception deficit similar to that found in the monkey with MT lesions. Even temporary disruption of MT processing with transcranial magnetic stimulation can produce a temporary akinetopsia [127]. Motion perception deficits, however, also are found with a variety of subcortical lesions and other neurologic disorders that can best be described as causing a disconnection within the motion processing stream. The precise role of these subcortical structures, such as the cerebellum, remains to be determined. Simple motion perception, moreov

When we move objects move past us in a relative pattern of motion referred to as optic flow. Modulations in optic flow can impact both our perception of self-motion (e.g. perceived distance travelled) and our feeling of self-motion, referred to as vection (e.g. speed of self-motion). The perception and feeling of self-motion have so far been studied independently, leaving open whether and how the two relate to each other. In the current study, stationary participants performed a self-motion task in virtual reality where they moved to previously indicated distances using constant velocity optic

Two experiments evaluated the importance of temporal integration for the perception and discrimination of solid object shape. In Experiment 1, observers anorthoscopically viewed moving or stationary cast shadows of naturally shaped solid objects (bell peppers, Capsicum annuum) through narrow (4-mm wide) slits. At any given moment, observers could only see a very small portion of the overall object shape (generally less than 10%). The results showed that the observers' discrimination performance for the moving cast shadows was much higher than that obtained for the stationary shadows, demonstra

Large-field motion of the visual environment is a powerful stimulus to induce the perception of contra-directional self-motion in a stationary observer. We investigated the interrelations between horizontal optokinetic nystagmus and subjective states of motion perception under variation of subjects' orientation with respect to gravity. Subjects were tested sitting upright and lying supine, and signalled transitions between object- and self-motion perception whilst viewing an optokinetic stimulus rotating about the subjects' longitudinal axis at a range of angular velocities. Optokinetic stimul
