Cavernous sinus thrombophlebitis is a rare, potentially life-threatening, condition that is most often caused by gram-negative bacteria and, to a lesser extent, fungi. Mucor is an opportunistic fungus that frequently affects patients with a weak immune system. We describe a case of an adult female without diabetes who developed Mucor sphenoid sinusitis causing cavernous sinus thrombophlebitis. The patient presented with headache, diplopia, and right lateral rectus palsy. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed abnormal prominent enhancement involving the cavernous sinuses associated wi

Mucormycosis is an increasingly recognized opportunistic infection. It usually affects patients with debilitating conditions such as cancer, diabetes mellitus, renal failure, and extensive burns. Mucor infection has also been described in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients. The most common clinical presentations are the cerebral, cutaneous, and renal forms. We describe a unique case of bilateral renal mucormycosis presenting with renal failure in an HIV-infected patient. In the immunosuppressed host, a history of intravenous (IV) drug abuse associated with symptoms of pyelonephritis s

Cunninghamella bertholletiae is a rare Mucor species that is seldom the cause for endocarditis of prosthetic heart valves. It is even a more uncommon cause of endocarditis of native heart valves. We present a case of Cunninghamella endocarditis of a native aortic valve in an immuno-compromised patient, diagnosed from tissue culture obtained at the time of surgery. There have only been two other reported cases of native valve endocarditis with a Mucor species, and in those cases, the diagnoses were made post-mortem.

OBJECTIVES: Mucorale has come into a significant pathogen over recent decades. Nonetheless, mucormycosis-related mortality rates among patients with hematological disorders remain unascertained. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis to determine mortality rates of mucormycosis in patients with hematology-related conditions.
METHODS: We scoured PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science for original papers exploring the intersection of Mucormycosis and Hematological Diseases (from 2000 to 2022). We scrutinized the overall mortality across three distinct periods, as well as differentiating between high-in

This article reported a 46-year-old male patient with pulmonary mucormycosis and a history of poorly controlled diabetes. Chest imaging revealed rapidly progressive patchy opacities and multiple cavities in both lungs. Bronchoscopy showed mucor plug obstructing multiple segmental and subsegmental bronchi. The patient underwent sequential treatment, including local nebulization, oral/intravenous antifungals, and bronchoscopic removal of mucor plugs combined with intrabronchial instillation of amphotericin B deoxycholate. However, this yielded no significant improvement. During the procedure, ma

Extracellular beta-glucosidase activity of 94 strains, representing 24 species of the genera Gilbertella, Mucor, Rhizomucor , and Rhizopus was evaluated in submerged culture and under solid state fermentation on wheat bran. Gilbertella persicaria G1 isolate showed the highest activity (70.9 U ml -1 ) followed by other Gilbertella (58.6-59.0 U ml -1 ) and Rhizomucor miehei isolates (29.2-42.0 U ml -1 ). Optimum temperature for enzyme production was 25 degrees C for Gilbertella and Mucor , and 30 degrees C for Rhizomucor and Rhizopus strains. Enzymes of R. miehei strains proved to be thermotoler

We report on a rare case of a patient with rhinocerebral mucormycosis that presented as intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). A 54-year-old man who was immunosuppressed had ophthalmoplegia. Four days later, ICH developed in his left frontal lobe. The ICH was surgically removed totally. Pathology specimen surgically obtained from brain surface adjacent to hematoma cavity showed blood vessels filled with Mucor mycelium. Combined with surgical findings, venous occlusion by Mucor mycelium might be the cause of ICH in the patient.

The reactivity of a panel of rabbit hyperimmune antisera raised against somatic antigens of three zygomycetes, Absidia corymbifera, Rhizopus oryzae and Rhizomucor (Mucor) pusillus was assessed by crossed immunoelectrophoresis (XIE) and indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) staining of experimentally infected murine tissues. Despite a widespread cross-reactivity of the neat antisera, heterologous absorption rendered antisera monospecific as assessed by XIE. Heterologous absorption also rendered the antisera against R. oryzae and R. (Mucor) pusillus specific by IIF, whereas heterologous absorption o

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis, also known as black fungus, is a rare but serious fungal infection caused by mucor that belongs to Zygomycotic species. Mucor is characterized by non-septate, irregularly wide hyphae with right-angle branching. Mucor can infect different systems of the body and manifest differently depending on the location of the infection, which includes pulmonary, gastrointestinal, rhino-cerebral, and cutaneous.
AIM: The study aims to analyze the incidence, clinical history, and microscopic features associated with mucormycosis in the COVID-19 pandemic at our institute.

Fungal rhinosinusitis is a serious infection related to immunosuppressive conditions. It is caused by common opportunistic mycoses, such as Mucor, Aspergillus sp. and Candida sp. Treatment is difficult and most of the patients with an invasive form, die. We report a case of a 13 year old boy who developed Mucor and Aspergillus sp rhinosinusitis while receiving chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Even though the patient was intensely immunossupressed, early diagnoses associated with surgical debridement and effective doses of amphotericin B allowed a favorable outcome and hospital di

Mucormycosis of the gastrointestinal tract is a life threatening infection most commonly seen in patients with severe immunosuppression. A 42-year-old male with history of choriocarcinoma was admitted to the intensive care unit with septic shock. He developed massive hematemesis requiring upper endoscopy which showed multiple deep gastric ulcers. Due to uncontrollable bleeding he underwent an emergent gastrectomy which revealed necrotic ulcers with evidence of angioinvasion in the ulcer bed with mucor organisms. The PCR revealed the mucor to be Mycotypha microspora which is extremely rare. We

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic fungal infection involving among others the paranasal sinuses, nasal fossa and brain parenchyma. Mucor can invade the brain parenchyma by either contiguous spread from the paranasal sinuses or through vascular invasion. We report a case of fatal rhino-cerebral mucormycosis in whom cytotoxic edema at magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging was symmetrically restricted to both neocortical and paleocortical primary areas of olfactory projection at earliest phase of the disease process. Shortly later tissue damage extended into the whole brain. This undescrib

Mucormycosis is an emerging infection associated with a high mortality rate. Identification of the causative agents remains difficult and time-consuming by standard mycological procedures. In this study, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing was validated as a reliable technique for identification of Zygomycetes to the species level. Furthermore, species identification directly from infected tissues was evaluated in experimentally infected mice. Fifty-four Zygomycetes strains belonging to 16 species, including the most common pathogenic species of Rhizopus spp., Absidia spp., Mucor spp.

The fungal microbiota plays an important role in the pathogenesis of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In this study, we aimed to compare changes of the fecal fungal microbiota between patients with ALD and NAFLD and to elucidate patterns in different disease stages between the two conditions. We analyzed fungal internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) sequencing using fecal samples from a cohort of 48 patients with ALD, 78 patients with NAFLD, and 34 controls. The fungal microbiota differed significantly between ALD and NAFLD. The genera Saccharo
