Lost in Translation and Left Behind: Lived Experiences of Chinese Immigrants During the 2025 Los Angeles Wildfires.

The January 2025 wildfires in Los Angeles County (LAC) caused widespread destruction and disproportionately affected linguistically diverse communities. Chinese immigrants, one of the largest immigrant groups in LAC, may have experienced heightened vulnerability due to limited English proficiency. To examine Chinese immigrants' experiences with emergency alerts and recovery during the 2025 wildfire, we conducted two focus groups in January 2026 with 16 Chinese participants who had been directly impacted by the wildfire. Discussions explored their trusted communication channels, fire alerts, ev

Korean Large Language Models for Medical Question Answering on Arthritis: Fine-tuning and Comparative Evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly being used for medical question-answering (QA) tasks. However, most models are trained primarily on English-language data, which limits their effectiveness in non-English clinical contexts. In healthcare settings such as Korea, LLMs adapted to both the local language and the medical domain are needed. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of Korean-native and multilingual LLMs fine-tuned on Korean arthritis-related medical QA data and to examine the impact of language and domain adaptation. METHODS: A dataset of 5,451 Korean QA

[The place of the Avicenne Elal within the Avicenne Hospital CRTLA].

The Centre référent des troubles du langage et des apprentissages (CRTLA) at Avicenne Hospital (Bobigny/Seine-Saint-Denis) offers multidisciplinary assessments for children with language and learning disorders. This child psychiatry facility sees many bilingual children, and takes this specificity into account during assessments to support the diagnosis. The team focuses on the child's evolution in all its dimensions, in relation to his or her developmental, family and cultural history. In this article, we describe the use of the Avicenne language assessment for allophones and newcomers, a mot

Revisiting bilingual processing: insights from L1 transfer in L2 acquisition.

MacWhinney's (1992) Competition Model proposes that L2 learners do not start from scratch but instead build on pre-existing L1 phonological, lexical, and syntactic representations. This approach eases the learning process yet leaves enduring traces from L1 transfer in the bilinguals' L2 lexicon, which may influence adult language processing. In this paper, we review psycholinguistic findings on bilingual comprehension and production and propose that many effects traditionally seen as evidence of on-line cross-language activation might instead reflect the long-term impact of L1 transfer during

Universal and Language-Specific Connected Speech Characteristics of Bilingual Speakers With Alzheimer's Disease: Insights From Case Studies of Structurally Distinct Languages.

PURPOSE: Connected speech analysis has been effectively utilized for the diagnosis and disease monitoring of individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Existing research has been conducted mostly in monolingual English speakers with a noticeable lack of evidence from bilinguals and non-English speakers, particularly in non-European languages. Using a case study approach, we characterized connected speech profiles of two Bengali-English bilingual speakers with AD to determine the universal features of language impairments in both languages, identify language-specific differences between the lan

Type of bilingualism, task domain, and attention demands impact children's cognitive performance.

The present study investigated the relation between continuous measures of two qualitatively different types of bilingual experience and outcome measures that varied in domain (verbal or nonverbal) and processing demands (degree of conflict). Participants were 195 English-speaking children, 7 years old, who were enrolled in French immersion programs. Children were assessed for their degree of "home bilingualism," reflecting language use patterns at home, and "school bilingualism," reflecting progress in learning French. None of the children spoke French at home. Participants completed verbal f

Are Written Syntax Features Related to Writing Quality? An Examination of Spanish and English Compositions by Bilingual Children.

PURPOSE: There is limited research on the writing of young Spanish-English bilinguals and their writing in both languages. In the current study, we addressed whether written syntax features differed by language (English and Spanish) and varied as a function of grade level, English learner status, and instructional program (dual or English immersion). We also examined whether Spanish and English syntax features were related cross-linguistically and related to writing quality within languages and whether these relations to writing quality were moderated by grade level, English learner status, an

Selective Mutism in the Context of Autism and Bilingualism.

Juan is a 5-year-old boy who has been followed by a developmental-behavioral pediatrician and pediatric neuropsychologist since being diagnosed with language delay and autism spectrum disorder at age 2 years. He is otherwise healthy and was born at term after a healthy pregnancy. His primary language is Spanish, and he has minimal interactions in English. His first words were at 20 months; they were not functional but rather words related to his interests such as "train." He began using 2 to 3-word phrases shortly after but only to request needs. He began speaking in complete sentences at age

Embodiment of action-related language in the native and a late foreign language - An fMRI-study.

Theories of embodied cognition postulate that language processing activates similar sensory-motor structures as when interacting with the environment. Only little is known about the neural substrate of embodiment in a foreign language (L2) as compared to the mother tongue (L1). In this fMRI study, we investigated embodiment of motor and non-motor action verbs in L1 and L2 including 31 late bilinguals. Half had German as L1 and French as L2, and the other half vice-versa. We collapsed across languages to avoid the confound between language and order of language acquisition. Region of interest a

Subcortical and cerebellar volume differences in bilingual and monolingual children: An ABCD study.

Research suggests that bilingual children experience an extension or delay in the closing of the sensitive/critical period of language development due to multiple language exposure. Moreover, bilingual experience may impact the development of subcortical regions, although these conclusions are drawn from research with adults, as there is a scarcity of research during late childhood and early adolescence. The current study included 1215 bilingual and 5894 monolingual children from the ABCD Study to examine the relationship between subcortical volume and English vocabulary in heritage Spanish bi

Foreign language reduces false memories by increasing memory monitoring.

People have false memories that distort their recollection of past events. Language is an important source of such memories, from providing false inferences to outright misinformation. Here we investigate the impact of using a native or foreign language on bilinguals' susceptibility to false memories. Although language has been argued to impact false memories in multiple ways, our study was inspired by recent work in the decision-making literature, which leads to the novel hypothesis that foreign language encourages people to engage in careful memory monitoring that could reduce false memories

Functional neuroanatomy of English word reading in early bilingual and monolingual adults.

Skilled reading is important in daily life. While the understanding of the neurofunctional organization of this uniquely human skill has advanced significantly, it does not take into consideration the common bilingual experiences around the world. To examine the role of early bilingualism on the neural substrates supporting English word processing, we compared brain activity, as well as functional connectivity, in Spanish-English early bilingual adults (N = 25) and English monolingual adults (N = 33) during single-word processing. Activation analysis revealed no significant differences between

Syntactic awareness matters: uncovering reading comprehension difficulties in Hong Kong Chinese-English bilingual children.

This study examined whether syntactic awareness was related to reading comprehension difficulties in either first language (L1) Chinese or second language (L2) English, or both, among Hong Kong Chinese-English bilingual children. Parallel L1 and L2 metalinguistic and reading measures, including syntactic word-order, morphological awareness, phonological awareness, vocabulary, word reading, reading comprehension, and cognitive measures of nonverbal intelligence and working memory, were administered to 224 fourth-graders. Five groups of comprehenders were identified using a regression approach:

Language profiles of Welsh-English bilingual children with Down syndrome.

PURPOSE: Given that children with Down syndrome (DS) have language learning difficulties, concerns have been raised about the capacity of these children to acquire two (or more) languages. This research examines the language profiles of bilingual children with DS and typically developing (TD) children in comparison to monolinguals, with a view towards identifying the factors associated with language abilities within these populations. METHOD: Four groups of children were recruited: Welsh-English bilinguals with DS (n=10), English monolinguals with DS (n=10), TD Welsh-English bilinguals (n=10)

Functional MRI and Structural Connectome Analysis of Language Networks in Japanese-English Bilinguals.

We aimed to clarify the mechanisms of neural plasticity involved in language. We hypothesized that alterations which occur in bilinguals could reflect the mechanisms of acquisition of a second language and simulate neural plasticity related to language. We compared spatial characteristics of story listening-related hemodynamic modulations and subcortical fiber networks between monolinguals and bilinguals. Participants were Japanese monolinguals and Japanese-English bilinguals whose first language was Japanese. We divided bilinguals into early and late bilinguals depending on whether the age of

Bilingualism and Dementia: Cognitive Reserve to Linguistic Competency.

Despite the large number of elderly bilinguals at risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia worldwide, significant questions remain about the relationship between speaking more than one language and later cognitive decline. Bilingualism may impact on cognitive and neural reserve, time of onset of dementia symptoms and neuropathology, and linguistic competency in dementia. This review indicates increased cognitive reserve from executive (monitoring, selecting, inhibiting) control of two languages and increased neural reserve involving left frontal and related areas for language control. Using Spelling to Screen Bilingual Kindergarteners At Risk for Reading Difficulties.

For bilingual children, the results of language and literacy screening tools are often hard to interpret. This leads to late referral for specialized assessment or inappropriate interventions. To facilitate the early identification of reading difficulties in English, we developed a method of screening that is theory-driven yet suitable for first-language (L1) and second-language learners of English. We administered five conventional tests (phonological awareness, vocabulary,Wide Range Achievement Test-4[WRAT-4] spelling, letter identification, rapid naming of digits) to 127 five-year-olds (60

Naming abilities in low-proficiency second language learners.

Difficulties in second language (L2) learning are often associated with recognizable learning difficulties in native language (L1), such as in dyslexia. However, some individuals have low L2 proficiency but intact L1 reading skills. These L2 learners experience frequent tip-of-the-tongue states while naming in L1, which indicates that they have a weakness in retrieval of phonological codes of words. The authors hypothesized that if naming ability is shared across languages, this difficulty would reemerge in L2 naming, which was tested using the tip-of-the-tongue experimental paradigm. Consiste

Dyslexia and learning a foreign language: a personal experience.

Individuals with dyslexia can expect to have difficulties learning a second language since second language learning builds on native language learning. The factors that have a negative impact on learning one's native language have a similar impact on learning a foreign language (e.g., difficulties with phonemic awareness, retrieving and processing linguistic information, working memory, metalinguistic explanations, stabilizing sound-symbol relationships). This participant observer report provides (1) a brief review of research on how dyslexia complicates learning a second language; (2) a descr
