Passive and active wrist joint stiffness following eccentric exercise.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of exercise-induced muscle injury on passive and active wrist joint stiffness. Ten male subjects were repeatedly tested over a period of 11 days, once prior to, and four times following a bout of eccentric exercise with the wrist extensor muscles. Static wrist stiffness was measured by applying a 3 degrees ramp and hold displacement of the manipulandum, which stretched the wrist extensor muscles. Wrist extension maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) declined by 24.5% from pre-exercise to 24 h after the exercise bout (P < 0.001). There was

Stroke effort and relative lung volume influence heart rate in diving sea lions.

The dive response, bradycardia (decreased heart rate) and peripheral vasoconstriction, is the key mechanism allowing breath-hold divers to perform long-duration dives while actively swimming and hunting prey. This response is variable and modulated by factors such as dive duration, depth, exercise and cognitive control. This study assessed the potential role of exercise and relative lung volume in the regulation of heart rate (fH) during dives of adult female California sea lions instrumented with electrocardiogram (ECG), depth and tri-axial acceleration data loggers. A positive relationship b

Need to Perform Rehabilitation Exercises at Home by Parents of Children with Neurological Diseases to Maintain Performance During COVID-19 Lockdown.

With the outbreak of the novel pandemic coronavirus disease 2019 worldwide, numerous pediatric rehabilitation clinics have closed to support social and physical distancing, and therapists similar to other individuals are staying at their homes. There is a common concern of parents and caregivers that how and with what quality children's rehabilitation exercises should proceed. Most children with neurological diseases have problems, such as muscle spasticity, range of motion (ROM) limitation, muscle shortening, balance loss, and mobility and movement impairments. The normalization of muscle ton

A scoping review of the different types of exercise programs proposed for the improvement of postural balance in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), which is the most common type of scoliosis, is a progressive disease that occurs in children aged 10-16 years. Abnormal curvature in AIS provokes spinal asymmetry of the upper body alignment and might deteriorate postural balancing and control ability. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of exercise interventions on balance and postural stability in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. METHODS: Embase, Scopus, Pubmed (Medline) and Web of Science databases were searched using the terms idiopathic scoliosis, physiotherapy, and balance.

Effectiveness of combined conventional treatment with a tailored exercise training program on wound healing in patients with venous leg ulcer: A randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Venous leg ulcer (VLU) is a therapeutic challenge. The mainstay of care is compression therapy and wound care. Exercise is also recommended for facilitating wound healing. This study aimed to determine whether adding tailored exercise training to conventional treatment would be superior on wound healing, ankle mobility, calf muscle function, and functional ability compared to those with the conventional treatment alone. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial, single-blinded was conducted. VLU patients were randomized to the conventional treatment plus tailored exercise training

Anabolic and catabolic responses to different modes of exercise in patients with chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Muscle wasting is common in chronic kidney disease (CKD), contributing to impaired function and poor health outcomes. Exercise is recommended, but the molecular responses of skeletal muscle to different exercise modalities remain unclear. This study examined anabolic, catabolic, and myogenic responses to aerobic exercise (AE) versus combined exercise (CE; aerobic plus resistance) in CKD. METHODS: Muscle biopsies were collected from participants in a 12-week randomized controlled trial (the ExTra CKD trial) at baseline, 24 hours after initial exercise bout (untrained), and 24 hours

Management of myofascial trigger point pain.

Successful management of myofascial trigger point (MTrP) pain depends on the practitioner finding all of the MTrPs from which the pain is emanating, and then deactivating them by one of several currently used methods. These include deeply applied procedures, such as an injection of a local anaesthetic into MTrPs and deep dry needling (DDN), and superficially applied ones, including an injection of saline into the skin and superficial dry needling (SDN) at MTrP sites. Reasons are given for believing that DDN should be employed in cases where there is severe muscle spasm due to an underlying rad

Periodized versus Non-periodized Stretch Training on Gymnasts Flexibility and Performance.

Static stretching (SS) can increase joint range of motion (ROM), due to neural, morphological, and physio-psychological factors. Periodized training programs (PD) (e. g., strength, power) are adopted to induce greater adaptations while avoiding overtraining. However, the effectiveness of periodized stretch training adaptations are unknown. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare the effects of periodized and non-periodized (NP) stretching programs on flexibility, hamstrings stiffness and muscle performance. Sixteen gymnasts were allocated to either periodized or non-periodized SS

Effect of Passive Stretching of Respiratory Muscles on Chest Expansion and 6-Minute Walk Distance in COPD Patients.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Hyperinflation of the lungs leads to a remodeling of the inspiratory muscles that causes postural deformities and more labored breathing. Postural changes include elevated, protracted, or abducted scapulae with medially rotated humerus, and kyphosis that leads to further tightening of respiratory muscles. As the severity of the disease progresses, use of the upper limbs for functional tasks becomes difficult due to muscle stiffness. There are various studies that suggest different re

Stretching the Spines of Gymnasts: A Review.

Gymnastics is noted for involving highly specialized strength, power, agility and flexibility. Flexibility is perhaps the single greatest discriminator of gymnastics from other sports. The extreme ranges of motion achieved by gymnasts require long periods of training, often occupying more than a decade. Gymnasts also start training at an early age (particularly female gymnasts), and the effect of gymnastics training on these young athletes is poorly understood. One of the concerns of many gymnastics professionals is the training of the spine in hyperextension-the ubiquitous 'arch' seen in many

Influence of High Intensity 20-Second Static Stretching on the Flexibility and Strength of Hamstrings.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of high intensity static stretching for 20 seconds on flexibility and strength in the hamstrings. Seventeen healthy participants (13 men and 4 women) underwent static stretching for 20 seconds at three different intensities based on the point of discomfort (POD, 120% POD, and MaxPOD). To examine the change in flexibility and strength, range of motion (ROM), passive torque, muscle-tendon unit stiffness, peak torque of maximum voluntary isokinetic concentric contraction, and knee angle at peak torque were measured. Acute changes in passive stiffness of the individual hamstring muscles induced by resistance exercise: effects of contraction mode and range of motion.

PURPOSE: Recent studies raise an interesting possibility that resistance exercise also decreases passive muscle stiffness, as does stretching exercise. However, little is known about how program variables of resistance exercise acutely influence muscle stiffness. We aimed to examine the acute changes in passive stiffness of the individual hamstring muscles after resistance exercises using different combinations of contraction modes and ranges of motion (ROMs). METHODS: Thirteen healthy young male participants performed three sessions of resistance exercises that comprised stiff-leg deadlift w
