Nononcologic Applications of PET/CT and PET/MRI in Musculoskeletal, Orthopedic, and Rheumatologic Imaging: General Considerations, Techniques, and Radiopharmaceuticals.

PET is often underutilized in the field of musculoskeletal imaging, with key reasons including the excellent performance of conventional musculoskeletal MRI, the limited spatial resolution of PET, and the lack of reimbursement for PET for nononcologic musculoskeletal indications. However, with improvements in PET/CT and PET/MRI over the last decade as well as an increased understanding of the pathophysiology of musculoskeletal diseases, there is an emerging potential for PET as a primary or complementary modality in the management of rheumatologic and orthopedic patients. Specific advantages o

Elevated free secretory component in early rheumatoid arthritis and prior to arthritis development in patients at increased risk.

OBJECTIVES: Considering growing evidence of mucosal involvement in RA induction, this study investigated circulating free secretory component (SC) in patients with either recent-onset RA or with ACPA and musculoskeletal pain. METHODS: Two prospective cohorts were studied: TIRA-2 comprising 452 recent-onset RA patients with 3 years of clinical and radiological follow-up, and TIRx patients (n = 104) with ACPA IgG and musculoskeletal pain followed for 290 weeks (median). Blood donors and three different chronic inflammatory diseases served as controls. Free SC was analysed by sandwich ELISA. RE

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders among facial plastic surgeons and rhinologists.

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are a prevalent issue among facial plastic surgeons and rhinologists, largely due to the physically demanding and intricate nature of their work. These professionals often face prolonged periods of awkward postures, repetitive movements, and the need for precise, sustained focus, all of which contribute to the development of musculoskeletal problems over time. The frequent need for prolonged periods of precise movements and static postures during surgeries increases the risk of developing musculoskeletal issues. OBJECTIVE: The study a

Bone and joint diseases around the world. Sweden: a brief update on burden and priority.

Musculoskeletal conditions are increasingly common with advancing age. The life expectancy increased early and rapidly in Sweden, and today 17% of the population is over age 65. Musculoskeletal problems are therefore common but in general are receiving low attention, despite enormous costs for society. The indirect costs for musculoskeletal conditions vastly exceed direct costs (80% vs 20%). This is obviated by the fact that in 2001, of all persons receiving disability pension or taking longterm sick leave, 60% had a diagnosis related to the musculoskeletal system. Further, in a population of

Diagnostic approach to catastrophic musculoskeletal injuries in racehorses.

Catastrophic musculoskeletal injuries are the most common cause of euthanasia or spontaneous death in racehorses, and the most common cause of jockey falls with potential for serious human injury. Horses are predisposed to the vast majority of these injuries by preexisting lesions that can be prevented by early diagnosis and adequate bone injury management. A thorough examination of the musculoskeletal system in racehorses often determines the cause of these injuries and generates data to develop injury prevention strategies. We describe the diagnostic approach to musculoskeletal injury, revie

Musculoskeletal Demands in Violin and Viola Playing: A Literature Review.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Research in music medicine has reported incidence rates of musculoskeletal disorders of approx. 70% in instrumental musicians. String players have the highest risk, with rates of performance-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) of 65% to 88%. Playing the violin or viola requires complex neuromusculoskeletal skills, and the high frequency of repetitive movements, dynamic and static muscle load, awkward postures, poor technique, and practice time are factors causing musculoskeletal strain. In ergonomic terms, these disorders can be categorized based on extrinsic and intrins

Lower risk of musculoskeletal pain among patients with end-stage renal disease treated by hemodialysis: A frequency-matched retrospective cohort study.

Musculoskeletal pain is experienced by 5%-14% of the general adult population, and it is highly common among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Therefore, the purpose of the study was to decide the prevalent rate of musculoskeletal pain in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients and to analyze this relationship between myalgia and ESRD using clinical features and determinants.A total of 93,013 patients who received ESRD diagnoses during 2000 and 2010 and were followed up until December 31, 2011, were identified from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000 (LHID2000) of the Nat

Congenital and Traumatic Conditions of the Pediatric Hand: Overview for the Radiologist.

Alignment, longitudinal growth, and function of the musculoskeletal unit of the pediatric hand is complex due to the combination of open growth plates, ossification variations, and their relationship with finger tendinous and ligamentous attachments. This review presents the basics of normal development, acquired and congenital variations, and traumatic conditions of the pediatric hand from the perspective of the pediatric musculoskeletal radiologist and hand surgeon. This multimodality imaging article focuses on non-oncologic and non-rheumatologic conditions of the pediatric hand, inclusive o

Extracellular matrix protein composition dynamically changes during murine forelimb development.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is an integral part of multicellular organisms, connecting different cell layers and tissue types. During morphogenesis and growth, tissues undergo substantial reorganization. While it is intuitive that the ECM remodels in concert, little is known regarding how matrix composition and organization change during development. Here, we quantified ECM protein dynamics in the murine forelimb during appendicular musculoskeletal morphogenesis (embryonic days 11.5-14.5) using tissue fractionation, bioorthogonal non-canonical amino acid tagging, and mass spectrometry. Our

The Association Between 24-h Physical Behavior Compositions and Persistent Musculoskeletal Pain.

Individuals with musculoskeletal pain are generally advised to "be active", "reduce sedentary behavior", and "sleep enough", but such broad recommendations can be challenging to implement in daily life. We identified 24-h physical behavior compositions associated with musculoskeletal pain, using cross-sectional data from 817 participants in the Copenhagen City Heart Study. Daily durations of sedentary behavior, standing, light intensity, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity during leisure and work, and time in bed were measured using thigh- and hip-worn accelerometers (24 h/day for 7 day

Re-appraising the potential of naringin for natural, novel orthopedic biotherapies.

Naringin is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in plants of the Citrus genus that has historically been used in traditional Chinese medical regimens for the treatment of osteoporosis. Naringin modulates signaling through numerous molecular pathways critical to musculoskeletal development, cellular differentiation, and inflammation. Administration of naringin increases in vitro expression of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) and activation of the Wnt/β-catenin and extracellular signal-related kinase (Erk) pathways, thereby promoting osteoblastic proliferation and differentiation from stem c

Musculoskeletal changes in children prenatally exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls and related compounds (Yu-Cheng children).

Fifty-five Yu-Cheng (oil-disease) children born between 1978 and 1985 to mothers who ate PCB-contaminated rice oil in 1978-1979 were studied and compared to age- and sex-matched control subjects in 1991. The children's growth profiles, bone mineral density and soft tissue composition, joint laxity, and serum parathyroid hormone, vitamin D, calcium, alkaline phosphatase, and phosphate were compared. The Yu-Cheng children were 3.1 cm (p < .05) smaller and had less total lean mass and soft tissue mass as compared to the matched control subjects. All other parameters studied were similar in both g

Toxicity of cadmium in musculoskeletal diseases.

Epidemiological studies have reported that exposure to toxic metals like cadmium (Cd) may promote the development of musculoskeletal diseases, such as osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and osteoarthritis (OA), among others. The objective of this review is to summarize the molecular mechanisms of inflammation and oxidative stress activated by Cd at the bone level, particularly in osteoporosis, RA, and OA. Cadmium can increase bone resorption, affect the activity of osteoclasts and calcium (Ca) absorption, and impair kidney function, which favors the development of osteoporosis. In the ca

Musculoskeletal Urgent Care Centers in Connecticut Restrict Patients with Medicaid Insurance Based on Policy and Location.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal urgent care centers are a new development in the urgent care landscape. Anecdotally, these centers are known to screen patients based on their insurance status, denying care to those with Medicaid insurance. It is important to know whether the practice of denying musculoskeletal urgent care to patients with Medicaid insurance is widespread because this policy could exacerbate existing musculoskeletal healthcare disparities. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Do musculoskeletal urgent care centers in Connecticut provide access for patients with Medicaid insurance? (2) Do muscu

Post-Traumatic Sarcomas: Do They Exist?

Patients often cite a history of trauma prior to the diagnosis of a sarcoma. Sparse literature suggests that there may be a link between sarcoma development and trauma. A 10-year review of academic tertiary-referral sarcoma center database was examined to identify patients who developed a sarcoma after having a history of a significant musculoskeletal trauma. A total of 501 patients were treated for a sarcoma during this time period. Six patients were identified as previously having a significant musculoskeletal trauma at the site of sarcoma development. Half of the sarcomas arose in bone and

The relationship between psychosocial work factors, work stress and computer-related musculoskeletal discomforts among computer users in Malaysia.

Increasing numbers of workers use computer for work. So, especially among office workers, there is a high risk of musculoskeletal discomforts. This study examined the associations among 3 factors, psychosocial work factors, work stress and musculoskeletal discomforts. These associations were examined via a questionnaire survey on 30 office workers (at a university in Malaysia), whose jobs required an extensive use of computers. The questionnaire was distributed and collected daily for 20 days. While the results indicated a significant relationship among psychosocial work factors, work stress a

Age-related changes in strength, joint laxity, and walking patterns: are they related to knee osteoarthritis?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Aging is associated with musculoskeletal changes and altered walking patterns. These changes are common in people with knee osteoarthritis (OA) and may precipitate the development of OA. We examined age-related changes in musculoskeletal structures and walking patterns to better understand the relationship between aging and knee OA. METHODS: Forty-four individuals without OA (15 younger, 15 middle-aged, 14 older adults) and 15 individuals with medial knee OA participated. Knee laxity, quadriceps femoris muscle strength (force-generating capacity), and gait were assesse

New vessels, new approaches: angiogenesis as a therapeutic target in musculoskeletal disorders.

Musculoskeletal disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis are a common cause of pain and disability. The vasculature is an important component of the musculoskeletal system, and vascularization is a key event in the development of normal cartilage and bone. By promoting the delivery of nutrients, oxygen and cells, blood vessels help maintain the structural and functional integrity of joints and soft tissue and may facilitate tissue repair and healing. The identification of pro-angiogenic mediators such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has led to the development
