Sialic acids were characterized on the cell surface of conidia and hyphae of Fonsecaea pedrosoi, one of the agents of chromoblastomycosis. Neuraminidase-treated conidia had a reduced negative electrophoretic mobility and, in comparison with untreated cells, bound fewer particles of colloidal iron hydroxide and of cationized ferritin. Sialic acid residues in conidia are linked to galactopyranosyl units as indicated by the increased reactivity of neuraminidase-treated cells with peanut agglutinin. N-acetylneuraminic acid was the only derivative found in the mycelium whereas conidia contained bot

A case of renal actinomycosis, treated by nephrectomy, in a 41 year-old male, is reported. The clinical diagnosis, to which urography and renal arteriography lent support, was renal anthrax. The pus being sterile on conventional seeding, the investigations were directed towards the finding of characteristic mycelium. Five months after nephrectomy a cerebral abscess developed and the patient died. Although in the cerebral pus only B. proteus and coagulase-positive staphylococci were found, the actinomycotic etiology cannot be excluded since the specific granules were not looked for.

In 2001 and again in December 2005, an outbreak of leaf spots was observed on Guzmania sp. 'Gwendolyne' (Bromeliaceae) in a Belgian nursery. Typical disease symptoms were irregular spots with a grayish center and a narrow red-brown margin. Identification was based on morphological characteristics and molecular techniques. Isolations of diseased leaf tissues previously washed with sterile distilled water on potato dextrose agar (PDA) resulted in mycelial colonies after 7 to 8 days. Fungal mycelium grew at a linear rate of 30.4 mm per 24 h at 21°C in the dark. The pathogen produced aerial myceli

Edible fungal mycelia are promising building blocks for meat analogues, yet how their diverse morphological traits influence final product quality remains underexplored. In this study, three edible fungi, Cordyceps militaris A 17 (C. militaris), Pleurotus ostreatus 48 (P. ostreatus), and Pleurotus tuoliensis 08 (P. tuoliensis), each with distinct morphologies, were systematically investigated. The results showed that mycelial morphology was associated with the physicochemical properties of the raw material. Fine and highly dispersed mycelia (C. militaris) exhibited the highest water- and oil-h

Sterilization of enoki mushroom (Flammulina velutipes) substrate is a critical step to ensure both microbial safety and optimal mycelial growth for mushroom production. In this study, the substrates were heat treated with various F₀ values ranging from 10.93 to 181.25 and evaluated for physicochemical properties such as moisture content, mycelial growth, and microbial safety. The optimal sterilization range for ensuring microbial safety and mycelial growth was F₀ values of 31.98-121.62. F₀ values lower than 31.98 allow bacteria to re-grow during mycelial cultivation, increasing the risk of con

The aquatic hyphomycetes Fontanospora fusiramosa and Flagellospora curta isolated from a clean and a metal-contaminated site, respectively, were tested for the production of thiol compounds when exposed to Cd, Zn, and Cu for short- and long-term periods. After 8 days, control cultures of F. curta had a total thiol (T-SH) concentration in mycelia of 3.46 +/- 0.37 micromol g(-1) dry mass, which was 2.4 times greater than that of F. fusiramosa. In both species, nonprotein (NP-SH) and protein-bound (PB-SH) thiols accounted for 30% and 70% of T-SH, respectively. F. curta increased the production of

Submerged cultures were used to identify growth-limiting nutrients by Antrodia cinnamomea strains. The mycelial biomass and EPS production by A. cinnamomea BCRC 35396 were markedly higher than other A. cinnamomea strains. A relatively high C/N ratio was favorable for both the mycelial growth (5.41 g/l) and EPS production (0.55 g/l); the optimum ratio was 40. The glucose was available utilized preferentially for mycelial growth, rather than for EPS production. Flushing the culture medium with nitrogen had a stimulating effect on both mycelial growth and EPS production. In addition, peptone, yea

A new tetracycline-type antibiotic named viridicatumtoxin B along with the known compound viridicatumtoxin has been isolated from the mycelium of liquid fermentation cultures of Penicillium sp. FR11. The structure of viridicatumtoxin B was determined on the basis of MS and NMR data. Viridicatumtoxin B inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus including methicillin-resistant S. aureus and quinolone-resistant S. aureus with MIC (microg/ml) of 0.5, which is similar with that of vancomycin, but 8-64 times higher activity than that of tetracycline.

Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is a parasitic nematode that causes serious ecological and economic harm to pine trees. Taking ZSZLT-240 (LC50 = 0.889 μg·mL-1) as the lead compound, 26 azoxy compounds were designed and synthesized. Most of the azoxy compounds showed excellent nematicidal activity, especially Ib, IIa, and IIIh, with LC50 values of 0.424, 0.267, and 0.803 μg·mL-1, respectively, significantly better than avermectin (LC50 = 16.4 μg·mL-1) and emamectin benzoate (LC50 = 13.3 μg·mL-1). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the nematodes treated with compounds Ib and IIIh were sev

A statistical method was utilized in this study to enhance Lentinus edodes (shiitake) secondary metabolites, thereby improving its anticancer properties. The importance of employing the statistical method in this study stemmed from the initial statistical optimization of the substrate in submerged conditions, and the subsequent transfer of that optimal setting to the solid-state culture medium. The Plackett-Burman (PB) screening indicated that wheat starch, meat peptone, and vitamin B6 had a more pronounced impacted on polysaccharide production. The optimal substrates for polysaccharide produc

PURPOSE: Sporothrix schenckii is a thermally dimorphic fungus. In a saprotrophic environment or culturing at 25 °C, it grows as mycelia, whereas in host tissues or culturing at 37 °C, it undergoes dimorphic transition and division into pathogenic yeast cells. S. schenckii can cause serious disseminated sporotrichosis in immunocompromised hosts and presents an emerging global health problem. The mycelium-to-yeast transition was a consequence of the adaptive process to different environment. Some studies showed that the transition was significantly related to the virulence and pathogenesis of di

Aspergillus fumigatus causes a range of diseases in humans, some of which are characterized by fungal persistence. Aspergillus fumigatus, being a generalist saprotroph, may initially establish lung colonization due to its physiological versatility and subsequently adapt through genetic changes to the human lung environment and antifungal treatments. Human lung-adapted genotypes can arise by spontaneous mutation and/or recombination and subsequent selection of the fittest genotypes. Sexual and asexual spores are considered crucial contributors to the genetic diversity and adaptive potential of

BACKGROUND: Ancylostoma species have demanded attention due to their zoonotic potential. The use of anthelmintics is the usual method to prevent environmental contamination by Ancylostoma eggs and larvae. Nematophagous fungi have been widely used in their biological control due to the fungus ability to capture and digest free nematode forms.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of four different fungal extracts of Paecilomyces lilacinus (n=2), Trichoderma harzianum (n=1) and Trichoderma virens (n=1) isolates on the hatchability of Ancylostoma eggs.
METHODS: Fungal extracts

Nail infections caused by Candida species are normally associated with chronic paronychia or chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMCC). However, the role of Candida in the pathogenesis of other primary nail dystrophies has been questioned in view of their response to antifungal therapy alone. In the present study of 86 patients with primary nail dystrophies from which Candida was isolated, three patterns of nail involvement were found. Nineteen patients, of whom 17 had CMCC, had total dystrophic onychomycosis of at least two nails. The second group consisted of 27 patients with paronychia and l

BACKGROUND: Sporothrix schenckii is a pathogenic dimorphic fungus, the etiological agent of sporotrichosis, a lymphocutaneous disease that can remain localized or can disseminate, involving joints, lungs, and the central nervous system. Pathogenic fungi use signal transduction pathways to rapidly adapt to changing environmental conditions and S. schenckii is no exception. S. schenckii yeast cells, either proliferate (yeast cell cycle) or engage in a developmental program that includes proliferation accompanied by morphogenesis (yeast to mycelium transition) depending on the environmental condi

Global food production faces persistent threats from environmental challenges and pathogenic attacks, leading to significant yield losses. Conventional strategies to combat pathogens, such as fungicides and disease-resistant breeding, are limited by environmental contamination and emergence of pathogen resistance. Herein, we engineered sunlight-sensitive and biodegradable carbon dots (CDs) capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS), offering a novel and sustainable approach for plant protection. Our study demonstrates that CDs function as dual-purpose materials: priming plant immune r

A previously undescribed host for the opportunistic dematiaceous hyphomycete, Scolecobasidium humicola, is reported. Several epizootics among rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, occurred in a Tennessee fish hatchery from 1969 to 1973. Symptoms included surface lesions, blisters and abscesses. The kidneys and other internal organs were invaded by the mycelium of S. humicola. Tissue morphology of the fungus was typical of that associated with phaeohyphomycosis Experimental infections were reproduced in fingerling rainbow trout after intraperitoneal inoculation of S. humicola. Following a change in t
