Global ocean pCO2 is increasing as a result of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, driving a decline in seawater pH. However, coastal waters already undergo fluctuations in pCO2/pH conditions over far shorter timescales, with values regularly exceeding those predicted for the open ocean by the year 2100. The speciation of copper, and therefore its potential toxicity, is affected by changing seawater pH, yet little is known concerning how present-day natural fluctuations in seawater pH affect copper toxicity to marine biota. Here, we test the hypothesis that a fluctuating seawater pCO2/pH regime will

OBJECTIVES: Given the presence of morphine, its metabolites and precursors in mammalian and invertebrate tissues, it became important to determine if exposing tissues to an opiate alkaloid precursor, reticuline, would result in increasing endogenous morphine levels.
METHOD: Endogenous morphine levels were determined by high pressure liquid chromatography coupled to electrochemical detection and radioimmunoassay following incubation of Mytilus edulis pedal ganglia with reticuline. Nitric oxide (NO) release was determined in real-time via an amperometric probe. Mu opiate receptor affinity for o

Human activities have disrupted the global carbon cycle, reducing carbon dioxide (CO₂) uptake by tidal wetlands and submerged vegetation. This exacerbates climate challenges, including rising temperatures and ocean acidification. Coastal systems such as mangroves and seagrasses serve as key carbon sinks, promising for CO₂ removal (CDR). Growing attention is being given to bivalves, whose calcification and reef-building activities shape coastal carbon dynamics. Most studies reduce bivalve impacts to a balance between individual CO₂ emissions and the carbon stored in their shells and tissues, of

Autophagy is a highly conserved evolutionary survival or defence process that enables cells and organisms to survive periods of environmental stress by breaking down cellular organelles and macromolecules in autolysosomes to provide a supply of nutrients for cell maintenance. However, autophagy is also a part of normal cellular physiology that facilitates the turnover of cellular constituents under normal conditions: it can be readily augmented by mild environmental stress; but becomes dysfunctional with severe oxidative stress leading to cellular pathology. The molluscan hepatopancreas or dig

Mussel (Mytilus californianus) adhesion to marine surfaces involves an intricate and adaptive synergy of molecules and spatio-temporal processes. Although the molecules, such as mussel foot proteins (mfps), are well characterized, deposition details remain vague and speculative. Developing methods for the precise surveillance of conditions that apply during mfp deposition would aid both in understanding mussel adhesion and translating this adhesion into useful technologies. To probe the interfacial pH at which mussels buffer the local environment during mfp deposition, a lipid bilayer with tet

Oceanographic changes due to carbon dioxide emissions have complex and varied impacts on marine calcifying taxa. Changes in calcification can unfold over decades or longer, requiring a longer-term understanding of biomineralization patterns than laboratory-based studies can provide. Here, we investigate the calcification history of the marine mussel Mytilus californianus to determine how this ecologically critical foundation species has responded to past and ongoing environmental changes in the southern end of its range within the California Current System (CCS) between 27.72° N and 34.47° N.

Ocean acidification and warming could have substantial negative impacts on marine organisms, particularly shell-building species. These environmental drivers may operate independently or interactively, amplifying or mitigating their impacts. Previous results have primarily come from lab studies, yet these climate drivers co-occur within naturally dynamic systems with high abiotic and biotic variability. Within intertidal habitats, the impacts of these drivers in situ remain poorly understood. We conducted a 6-month field manipulation to determine the effects of ocean acidification and warming

Biomonitoring at the scale of the aquatic continuum and based on biomarkers, requires various representative species and a knowledge of their sensitivity to contaminants. Mussel immunomarkers are established tools for evaluating immunotoxic stress, but little is known about the consequences of an immune activation by local microorganisms on their response to pollution. This study aims to compare the sensitivity of cellular immunomarkers in two mussel species from different environments, the marine mussel Mytilus edulis (blue mussel) and the freshwater mussel Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussel)

Blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) are important ecosystem engineers along Atlantic coastlines, where they are regularly subjected to rapid changes in temperature during the transition between tides. Global climate change and more frequent extreme weather events are expected to intensify this thermal stress even further. These increases in temperatures will not only affect intertidal mussels directly but also increase transmission dynamics of their parasites. Together, the effects of rises in temperature and parasitism will likely result in higher pressure on M. edulis and their ability to perform

Methylmercury is transported along aquatic food chains from the lower trophic levels and selenium modulates the biokinetics of mercury in organisms in complex ways. We investigated the retention of orally administered methylmercury in various marine invertebrates and the effect of selenium hereon. Shrimps (Palaemon adpersus and P. elegans), blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) and sea stars (Asterias rubens) eliminated methylmercury slowly (t½ = ½ to >1 year) and the copepod (Acartia tonsa) faster (t½ ∼ 12-24 h). Orally administered selenite augmented elimination of met

Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) are sessile filter feeders that live in close contact with numerous marine microorganisms. As all invertebrates, they lack an adaptive immune response and how these animals are able to respond to a bacterial infection and discriminate it from their normal microbiome is difficult to understand. In this work, we conducted Illumina sequencing of the transcriptome of individual mussels before and after being infected with Vibrio splendidus. The control mussels were injected with filtered seawater. We demonstrate that a great variability exists amon

Contamination of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) such as DDT and its metabolites (ΣDDs), γ-HCH (hexachlorocyclohexane), HCB (hexachlorobenzene), aldrin, endrin, isodrin and trans-nonachlor were investigated in wild mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) collected from Galician Rías (Rías of Ferrol, A Coruña, Muros, Arousa, Pontevedra and Vigo) during the period 1998-2012. Biological parameters, lipid content, shell length and condition index, were also studied. The OCPs levels in the wild mussel were in the order ΣDDs>γ-HCH>HCB. The other pesticides, aldrin, endrin, isodrin and trans-nonachlor,

A recently synthesized aminated 3,4-dioxygenated xanthone (Xantifoul2) was found to have promising antifouling (AF) effects against the settlement of the macrofouler Mytilus galloprovincialis larvae. Preliminary assessment indicated that Xantifoul2 has reduced ecotoxicological impacts: e.g., being non-toxic to the marine crustacea Artemia salina (<10 % mortality at 50 μM) and showing low bioconcentration factor in marine organisms. In order to meet the EU Biocidal Product Regulation, a preliminary hazard assessment of this new nature-inspired antifouling (NIAF) agent was conducted in this work

The protozoan parasites Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis and Toxoplasma gondii can be transmitted to humans through shellfish consumption. No standardized methods are available for their detection in these foods, and the performance of the applied methods are rarely described in occurrence studies. Through spiking experiments, we characterized different performance criteria (e.g. sensitivity, estimated limit of detection (eLD95METH), parasite DNA recovery rates (DNA-RR)) of real-time qPCR based-methods for the detection of the three protozoa in mussel's tissues and hemolymph. In this study, the sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and xanthan gum (XG) were used to prepare the CXM-Fe hydrogels (CMC: 20 mg/mL, XG: 10 mg/mL) with the addition of Mytilus edulis protein hydrolysate‑iron (MEPH-Fe) complexes. The incorporation of MEPH-Fe complexes formed a denser network structure and the CXM-Fe hydrogels had better pH stability as well as gastrointestinal retention ability. Compared with ferrous sulfate and MEPH-Fe complexes, the CXM-Fe hydrogels at moderate doses (Fe2+:2 mg/kg) showed impressive recovery effects on iron deficiency anemia (IDA) mice in terms of hematologi

AbstractThe general stress paradigm predicts that when prey are exposed to predation risk they will mobilize and divert energy toward risk responses and away from costly somatic growth. However, there is mixed evidence to support this paradigm likely because of the different behavioral strategies prey employ to cope with increased predation risk. Furthermore, this paradigm has rarely been tested in marine systems, where both the prey and their resources can be expected to alter their energetics because of top-down pressure. We performed a laboratory mesocosm experiment using a rocky intertidal

PURPOSE: Non-anemic iron deficiency (NAID) is common in COPD, and could induce functional/structural changes in the pulmonary vascular bed. Thus, we aimed to study, during resting and ambient oxygen conditions, the systolic pulmonary arterial pressure (sPAP) changes during dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) for NAID+ compared to NAID- subjects with COPD.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed 24 patients with COPD and evaluated their clinical parameters, including lung function and serum iron profile, followed by the changes in the sPAP under DSE.
RESULTS: Ten subjects with NAID+ were compa

The study of mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) has grown in importance in recent years due to their high economic value and resistance to pathogens. Because of the biological characteristics revealed by mussel genome sequencing, this species is a valuable research model. The high genomic variability and diversity, particularly in immune genes, may be responsible for their resistance to pathogens found in seawater and continuously filtered and internalized by them. These facts, combined with the lack of proven mussel susceptibility to viruses in comparison to other bivalves such as oysters, r

Species introductions promote secondary contacts between taxa with long histories of allopatric divergence. Anthropogenic contact zones thus offer valuable contrasts to speciation studies in natural systems where past spatial isolations may have been brief or intermittent. Investigations of anthropogenic hybridization are rare for marine animals, which have high fecundity and high dispersal ability, characteristics that contrast to most terrestrial animals. Genomic studies indicate that gene flow can still occur after millions of years of divergence, as illustrated by invasive mussels and tuni

Oxygen consumption, content of several carbohydrate metabolites, and activities of their coupled enzymes were studied in bivalve molluscs with different tolerance to oxygen deficit: Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam. (black morpha) and Anadara inaequivalvis Br. It has been shown that under conditions of external normoxia the anadara resistance to hypoxia preserves anaerobic orientation of metabolism. Its tissues are distinguished by high activities of malate and lactate dehydrogenases with the decreased content of glucose and the increased level of lactate. In several organs the succinate thiokina
