Photoelectrochemical degradation of trichloroethylene by iron modified TiO2 nanotube arrays.

In this study, iron was deposited to titanium dioxide nanotube arrays (TNAs) by impregnation method to enhance its photocatalytic ability. The as-synthesized iron-modified TNAs (Fe-TNAs) was employed in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) system to degrade trichloroethylene (TCE). Results of AFE-SEM analysis showed that the iron nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully attached evenly to the nozzle of Fe-TNAs. Results of XRD analysis confirmed the findings of EDS and XPS, indicating the success of iron modification. The absorption wavelength of Fe-TNAs-27 mL red-shifts to 543 nm which corresponds to the

Structural biofilm resistance of carbon-infiltrated carbon nanotube coatings.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a devastating complication of orthopedic implant surgeries, such as total knee and hip arthroplasties. Treatment requires additional surgeries because antibiotics have limited efficacy due to biofilm formation and resistant bacterial strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). A non-pharmaceutical approach is needed, and examples of this are found in nature; dragonfly and cicada wings are antibacterial because of their nanopillar surface structure rather than their chemistry. Carbon-infiltrated carbon nanotube (CICNT) surfaces exh

Local and Systemic In Vivo Responses to Osseointegrative Titanium Nanotube Surfaces.

Orthopedic implants requiring osseointegration are often surface modified; however, implants may shed these coatings and generate wear debris leading to complications. Titanium nanotubes (TiNT), a new surface treatment, may promote osseointegration. In this study, in vitro (rat marrow-derived bone marrow cell attachment and morphology) and in vivo (rat model of intramedullary fixation) experiments characterized local and systemic responses of two TiNT surface morphologies, aligned and trabecular, via animal and remote organ weight, metal ion, hematologic, and nondecalcified histologic analyses

A Carbon Nanotube Optical Reporter Maps Endolysosomal Lipid Flux.

Lipid accumulation within the lumen of endolysosomal vesicles is observed in various pathologies including atherosclerosis, liver disease, neurological disorders, lysosomal storage disorders, and cancer. Current methods cannot measure lipid flux specifically within the lysosomal lumen of live cells. We developed an optical reporter, composed of a photoluminescent carbon nanotube of a single chirality, that responds to lipid accumulation via modulation of the nanotube's optical band gap. The engineered nanomaterial, composed of short, single-stranded DNA and a single nanotube chirality, localiz

Development and characterization of polyethylene glycol-carbon nanotube hydrogel composite.

Carbon nanotube (CNT)-hydrogel composites are attractive for a variety of neural tissue engineering and drug delivery applications as well as biosensor coatings, transducers and leads. Both materials contribute unique and beneficial properties to the composites. Hydrogels are an excellent mimic of the extracellular matrix due to their hydrophilicity, viscoelasticity and biocompatibility. CNTs, on the other hand, can impart electroconductivity to otherwise insulating materials, improve mechanical stability and guide neuronal cell behavior as well as elicit axon regeneration. Not surprisingly, t

Teratogenicity of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) in ICR mice.

A possible teratogenicity of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) was assessed using ICR mice. MWCNTs were suspended in 2% carboxymethyl cellulose and given intraperitoneally or intra-tracheally to pregnant ICR mice on day 9 of the gestation. All fetuses were removed from the uterus on day 18 of the gestation, and were examined for external and skeletal anomalies. In the intraperitoneal study, various types of malformation were observed in all MWCNT-treated groups (2, 3, 4 and 5 mg/kg body weight, intraperitoneal). In contrast, such malformations were observed in groups given 4 or 5 mg/kg body w

Substrate-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry of Some Small Biomolecules Using TiO2-Nanotubes: The Effect of Nanotube Diameter and Salt Addition.

Substrate-assisted laser desorption/ionization (SALDI) is a kind of soft ionization method that is most suitable for the analysis of low molecular weight analytes when it is coupled with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Unlike the conventional matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization, there is no interference in the SALDI with matrices for the low mass analyte peaks (m/z < 700). The focus of this work is to develop substrates based on nanomaterials to obtain higher sensitivity, better reproducibility, and easier preparation. The mass spectra of some small molecules (capecitabine, hemin,

Influence of Color-Center Electronegativity on Circular Dichroism in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes.

Covalently functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have emerged as attractive quantum photonic materials due to their highly tunable optical properties and efficient single-photon emission capabilities. Recent progress in engineering chiral defects has motivated exploration of these systems for tunable circularly polarized photoluminescence. While electronegative defect adducts, such as fluorinated species, induce larger emission redshifts than their electroneutral counterparts, their impact on chiroptical properties remains poorly understood. Here, we theoretically demonstrate

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Thermodynamic Properties of Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes Filled Polyimide Composites.

As lithium battery technologies advance, superior polyimide-based materials are urgently required. However, the microscopic mechanism by which CNT surface chemistry governs polyimide (PI) enhancement remains a challenge. This study employs molecular dynamics simulations to investigate how functionalizing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with different surface groups (-COOH, -NH2, -OH) enhances the thermal and mechanical properties of PI composites for advanced engineering applications. The simulation results reveal that all functionalized CNTs improve the composite's properties, with carboxyl-modified

Diameter-dependent multiple proton jumps dictate hydronium and hydroxide transport in carbon nanotubes.

Nanofluidic channels impose extreme confinement on water, giving rise to unusual transport phenomena of the liquid. However, how the transport of hydroxide and hydronium ions is influenced by such confinement is still not fully understood. This study employs machine learning-accelerated simulations, based on the SCAN density functional, to investigate proton transfer dynamics in CNTs of varying diameters (0.8 nm to 2.8 nm). The extreme confinement of water inside a 0.8 nm CNT not only enhances the probability of multiple consecutive proton jumps, but also reverses the relative diffusion coeffi

Confinement of palladium nanoparticles in halloysite nanotubes for efficient and selective nitroaromatics reduction.

Immobilizing ultrasmall metal nanoparticles without aggregation remains challenging. By exploiting the surface chemical asymmetry of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), we developed an in-situ confinement strategy for the immobilization of palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) within the nanotube lumen. In this study, closo-[B12H12]2- clusters were selectively anchored onto the inner surface of HNTs through a vacuum-assisted process, driven by electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. These surface-anchored clusters subsequently orchestrate the in-situ reduction of Na2PdCl4, yielding uniformly disp

Circumventing thermodynamic limitations in converting carbon dioxide into carbon nanotubes via tandem catalysis.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are important materials for electronics and structural composites, but their production still relies on hydrocarbon-based chemical vapor deposition, an energy-intensive and fossil-dependent process, limited by rapid catalyst deactivation. Using CO2 as a carbon feedstock offers a sustainable route for CNT synthesis, yet direct CO2 conversion to CNTs is thermodynamically unfavorable and existing CO2-to-carbon pathways mainly yield amorphous or weakly graphitized solids. Here, we demonstrate a tandem electrochemical-thermochemical (EC-TC) strategy that overcomes these limi

First-principles study of diabetes-associated VOCs detection from breath using nitride nanotubes.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistent hyperglycemia, and its increasing global prevalence highlights the need for accessible, rapid, and non-invasive monitoring techniques. Breath analysis has gained considerable attention as a promising diagnostic approach because exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particularly acetone and ethanol, have been associated with metabolic changes and blood glucose variation. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate the adsorption behavior of acetone and ethanol on alum

Interfacial Failure Mechanism of Bitumen Reinforced with Carbon Nanotubes: A Micro-Nano Analysis.

Carbon-based nanomaterials have been widely used as bitumen modifiers because of their excellent mechanical and functional properties. Among carbon-based nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted particular attention because of their high aspect ratios and strong reinforcing potential. However, the interfacial failure mechanism of CNT-reinforced bitumen at the micro- and nanoscale remains unclear. This study employs molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the interfacial failure behavior of CNT-reinforced bitumen at the micro- and nanoscale. Utilizing the LAMMPS platform, a r

Soft-Template Electropolymerization from Triphenylamine-Based Monomers: From Vertically Aligned Nanotubes to Nanomembranes.

We report a bioinspired approach to tune surface nanostructures by soft-template electropolymerization in micellar condition. Monomers highly favoring π-stacking interactions are particularly interesting for depositing in one direction resulting in vertically aligned nanotubes. Here, for inducing very strong π-stacking interactions, a triphenylamine building block was selected and substituted by two substituents of different electronegativity (fluorine F and methoxy OMe). These synthons were di-substituted with various fully conjugated thiophene and carbazole derivatives. Here, all the monomer

A Characterizing Method of Carbon Nanotubes in Powder Form with Different Packing Densities.

A method for characterizing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in powder form with different packing densities in the microwave regions is proposed. The CNTs were sandwiched between two dielectric walls in (Polyvinyl Chloride) PVC and put in a waveguide shim. We measured the transmission/reflection S-parameters of the waveguide using a Vector Network Analysis (VNA), and the impacts of the PVCs on the measured S-parameters were de-embedded by microwave network analysis. Then, the well-known Nicolson-Ross-Weir (NRW) method was processed to determine the complex permittivity and permeability of the CNTs. Fu

Actuator-Driven, Purge-Free Formaldehyde Gas Sensor Based on Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes.

Formaldehyde vapor (HCHO) is a harmful chemical substance and a potential air contaminant, with a permissible level in indoor spaces below 0.08 ppm (80 ppb). Thus, highly sensitive gas sensors for the continuous monitoring of HCHO are in demand. The electrical conductivity of semiconducting nanomaterials (e.g., single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)) makes them sensitive to chemical substances adsorbed on their surfaces, and a variety of portable and highly sensitive chemiresistive gas sensors, including those capable of detecting HCHO, have been developed. However, when monitoring low levels
