The Role of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in the Treatment of Surgical Site Infections: A Narrative Review.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) are among the most prevalent postoperative complications, with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. In the past half century, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), the administration of 100% oxygen intermittently under a certain pressure, has been used as either a primary or alternative therapy for the management or treatment of chronic wounds and infections. This narrative review aims to gather information and evidence supporting the role of HBOT in the treatment of SSIs. We followed the Scale for the Quality Assessment of Narrative Review Articles (SANRA

Factors influencing the outcome of integrated therapy approach in schizophrenia: A narrative review of the literature.

The integration of pharmacotherapy with psychosocial interventions has an important role to play in the improvement of functional outcome of subjects with schizophrenia (SCZ), in all stages of the disorder. It is essential for the adequate management of unmet therapeutic needs, such as negative symptoms and cognitive dysfunctions which account for most of the functional impairment of subjects with SCZ and do not respond to available antipsychotics. Enhancing the knowledge on factors involved in the effectiveness of integrated treatment plans is an important step forward for SCZ care. This revi

Recent development of hydrogen sulfide-releasing biomaterials as novel therapies: a narrative review.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been reported as an endogenous gasotransmitter that contributes to the modulation of a myriad of biological signalling pathways, which includes maintaining homeostasis in living organisms at physiological concentrations, controlling protein sulfhydration and persulfidation for signalling processes, mediating neurodegeneration, and regulating inflammation and innate immunity, etc. As a result, researchers are actively exploring effective approaches to evaluate the properties and the distribution of H2S in vivo. Furthermore, the regulation of the physiological conditio

Combination therapies involving checkpoint-inhibitors for treatment of urothelial carcinoma: a narrative review.

The implementation of immune checkpoint-inhibitors (CPI) has significantly improved the prognosis of a subgroup of patients with urothelial bladder cancer (BC). Still, the majority of patients will progress or experience a recurrence on CPI monotherapy. The next generation of clinical trials is now testing combination therapy with CPI and other agents that target different oncogenic mechanisms in an effort to improve efficacy. The beneficial toxicity profile of CPI but also the approval of CPI combinations in other cancer sites justifies their investigation also in BC. Here we report on clinic

Predictors of Dropout in Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD: An Examination of Trauma Narrative Content.

Dropout rates in trauma-focused treatments for adult posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are high. Most research has focused on demographic and pretreatment predictors of dropout, but findings have been inconsistent. We examined predictors of dropout in cognitive processing therapy (CPT) by coding the content of trauma narratives written in early sessions of CPT. Data are from a randomized controlled noninferiority trial of CPT and written exposure therapy (WET) in which CPT showed significantly higher dropout rates than WET (39.7% CPT vs. 6.4% WET). Participants were 51 adults with a primary

Care, Control, and the Electroconvulsive Therapy Ritual: Making Sense of Polarized Patient Narratives.

Despite evidence of short-term effectiveness of ECT (electroconvulsive therapy), both positive and negative patient reports are common. However, research examining these polarized accounts has not adequately elucidated why such divergences occur. We thus sought to examine opposing patient narratives to better understand underlying meanings. Eighteen interviews were conducted with U.K.-based people who had experienced the treatment. Our analysis revealed that the quality of relations with staff, ECT artifacts (e.g., the ECT suite), and perceived outcomes all play a role in divergent accounts. P

Teriparatide therapy for bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: a case report and narrative review.

Bisphosphonates (BP), potent antresorptive agents, play a key role in managing osteolytic bone disorders including osteoporosis, Paget's disease, bone metastasis, and multiple myeloma. However, their long-term administration is associated with increased risk for bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) development. At present, there is no curative therapy for BRONJ, and patients are often treated palliatively with antibiotics, antimicrobial mouth rinses, and debridement of necrotic bone. This article highlights a new treatment modality that may be beneficial to a subset of osteo

Psychopathological and psychosexual profile and therapy for patients with androgen insensitivity syndrome: a narrative review.

PURPOSE: The objective of this review is to present androgen insensitivity syndrome as a multidimensional disorder, with a focus on psychological issues, gender identity, and sexual functioning. It also discusses therapeutic options, such as psychological and psychiatric support. VIEWS: Androgen insensitivity syndrome is a rare disorder of sex development that occurs in individuals with an XY karyotype. It is caused by a mutation in the androgen receptor gene, leading to reduced sensitivity to androgens. There are three forms: mild, partial, and complete androgen insensitivity syndrome. Indiv

The effects of narrative therapy on stigma of patients with permanent enterostomy: A randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Permanent enterostomy is often associated with stigma and poor psychosocial adaptation. This study aimed to develop a narrative therapy (NT) program for ostomy patients and evaluate its efficacy. METHOD: In this randomized controlled trial, 96 patients were randomly assigned to control and intervention groups at a 1:1 ratio. The control group received standard nursing care, while the intervention group additionally received an 8-week NT program starting from the first week after discharge. Stigma and psychosocial adaptation were assessed using the Social Impact Scale and the Ostomy A

Quality of Life in Orthodontic Patients Before and After Appliance Therapy: A Narrative Review.

Background: Orthodontic treatment is increasingly recognised as a complex, patient-centred intervention whose impact extends beyond occlusal correction to include physical comfort, psychosocial well-being, and self-perceived esthetics. Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) has therefore become a key outcome for evaluating orthodontic care across all treatment stages. Aim: This narrative review of 140 studies synthesises current evidence on OHRQoL changes in orthodontic patients before treatment, during active therapy, and after treatment completion, with particular emphasis on temporal

The Role of Precision Medicine in Neuroblastoma: Targeted Therapies and Personalized Approaches-A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid tumor and contributes the most to pediatric oncology deaths worldwide. Its clinical manifestations are heterogeneous, including relapses, and the prognosis remains poor, especially for high-risk patients. The principal interventions-surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy-exacerbate the prognosis due to high morbidity and poor long-term remission rates. This study attempts to integrate available information on the genetic and molecular characteristics of neuroblastoma, focusing on how the potential of precision medicine i

Targeted Interventions in HAM/TSP: Emerging Therapies and Future Directions - A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Human T-Lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection can lead to HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), a debilitating chronic neurological disease characterized by progressive lower limb spasticity and autonomic dysfunction. Because the exact disease pathogenesis remains unclear and current management options have limited efficacy, there is a critical need for more effective therapies to reduce morbidity and mortality. This narrative review aims to review the available and diverse range of emerging treatment approaches for HAM/TSP. METHODS: A

Targeted Endoscopic Therapies for Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): A Narrative Review.

Transoral endoscopic therapies in gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) are increasingly performed in patients who do not respond to medical therapy or are not suitable for or willing to undergo long-term PPI therapy or surgery. Currently available effective techniques include reconstruction of the gastro-esophageal valve by transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) and tightening of the gastro-esophageal junction through scarring, obtained by mucosal resection or ablation. TIF may be accomplished by an EsophyX 2.0/Z, MUSE, or GERD-X device. An iatrogenic stricture of the cardia may be obt

Unraveling the Potential of Stem Cell Therapy in Motor Neuron Disease: A Narrative Review.

Motor neuron disorders (MNDs), including ALS, are deadly neurodegenerative conditions that cause progressive motor neuron degeneration. With neuroprotection and the potential for neuron regeneration employing MSCs, ESCs, iPSCs, and NSCs, stem cell treatment presents a viable alternative to current medicines, which only control a limited number of symptoms. Following PRISMA criteria, this narrative review methodically screened 1248 records from the Cochrane, Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus databases. Following a thorough screening process, 22 studies, including preclinical models and 19 clin

A Narrative Review of Local Therapies in Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Treatment Landscape and Current Issues.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is an insidious, chronic inflammatory skin disease, leading to a negative impact on a patient's quality of life and a poor prognosis. The pathogenesis of HS is complex and multifaceted including genetic, sex hormones, smoking, obesity, and immune dysregulation as the main contributing factors to the development of the disease. HS is challenging to treat and a multimodal approach, combining topical treatment, systemic therapy, and lifestyle modifications, is a strongly recommended strategy to manage the disease. Regular skin care, topical therapy, and intralesional
