The discriminative value of toluidine blue vital staining for detecting oral premalignant lesions and carcinomas was tested in the hamster DMBA buccal pouch model. The stain technique was further tested for specificity using the turpentine liquid petrolatum (TLP) hamster cheek pouch model for hyperplasia. Although carcinomas frequently exhibited toluidine blue staining, a 27.8% false negative result was noted. A fluorescent antibody staining method was developed to detect Chlamydia trachomatis elementary bodies in Papanicolaou-stained cervical smears. Twenty-five known chlamydia-positive and 12 chlamydia-negative smears were correctly identified using this method. Smears from individuals with culture-positive chlamydia infections showed a high density of elementary bodies. We report two immigrants with tuberculosis of the skull base and a review of the literature. A Somalian man presented with bilateral otitis media, hearing loss, and facial and abducens palsy. INTRODUCTION: Thyroid carcinoma is classically diagnosed based on certain histological criteria. In some cases, definitive diagnoses may be challenging when morphological features are equivocal. Phenotypic characterization of neoplastic cells from 5 patients with hairy cell leukemia (HCL) was performed with 29 monoclonal and 6 polyclonal (anti-Ig) antibodies using immunoperoxidase staining of fresh frozen splenic tissue. We compared tissue culture with Papanicolaou-stained cervical smears, endocervical cytologic smears stained with immunofluorescent monoclonal antibody, and a direct immunofluorescent stain of cervical specimens (MicroTrak) for detection of Chlamydia trachomatis in cervical specimens.
