When and why women ask (or do not): Taking stock of research on gender differences in negotiation propensity, behavior, and outcomes.

Evidence first emerged several decades ago that women are less likely than men to initiate negotiations and perform less competitively than men in negotiations. Researchers also have discovered moderators of these effects, including structural ambiguity, representation role, and gender salience and relevance. Furthermore, the anticipation of backlash has emerged as a potential mechanism to explain gender differences in negotiations. Yet, more recent research has revealed varied findings concerning whether gender differences, underlying mechanisms, and moderators have shifted, as well as the ro

Biarticular energy transfer mechanisms of the gastrocnemii muscles are associated with managing body energy during hole negotiation gait.

In this study, the energy transfer potential between the ankle and knee joints via the biarticular gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis muscles was investigated, as well as its association with changes in total centre of mass (CoM) energy during hole negotiation - a common task in daily life locomotion - and level walking. Whole-body kinematics and activation patterns of the gastrocnemii and vasti muscles were measured during the preparation, hole, and recovery steps in 18 participants. During hole negotiation, we found a significant (p < 0.001) increase in the peak-to-peak range of total CoM

A Mixed-Methods Pilot Evaluation of a Principled Negotiation Conflict Resolution Training Program for Newly Promoted Nurse Clinicians.

BACKGROUND: Newly promoted nurse clinicians must manage conflict among former peers while adapting to supervisory duties, yet transition-specific conflict training remains limited. METHOD: A mixed-methods pilot evaluation was conducted in a tertiary academic medical center. Twenty-four nurse clinicians (≤ 6 months in the role) attended four weekly, 2-hour sessions based on principled negotiation (separating the people from the problem; focusing on interests rather than positions; generating options for mutual gain; using objective criteria). Kirkpatrick Levels 1 to 3 were assessed using a pre

Adolescents and Young People's Understanding and Negotiation of Sexual Consent in sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis.

Sexual consent is a critical component of healthy sexual relationships and essential for preventing intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV), a significant public health and human rights concern in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Evidence on how adolescents and young people (AYP) aged 15-24 years understand and negotiate consent, however, remains fragmented. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on how AYP in SSA perceived and communicate sexual consent and the key factors shaping sexual consent negotiation. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISM

Effects of multi-obstacle contexts on obstacle negotiation strategies in healthy older adults under dual-task conditions.

BACKGROUND: Performance of obstacle crossing is an attentionally demanding task due to the need for motor planning and gait regulation, particularly among older adults. Despite extensive studies on age-associated changes in obstacle negotiation strategies, relatively little is known about adaptive mechanisms in the elderly regarding multiple obstacle crossings with different execution demands. RESEARCH QUESTION: For better understanding of avoidance strategies employed by the elderly, the current study investigated adaptive mechanisms related to planning and implementation of more complex mul

Effects of Prefrontal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Retention of Performance Gains on an Obstacle Negotiation Task in Older Adults.

OBJECTIVES: Complex walking in older adults can be improved with task practice and might be further enhanced by pairing transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. We tested the hypothesis that a single session of practice of a complex obstacle negotiation task paired with active tDCS in older adults would produce greater within-session improvements in walking performance and retention of gains, compared to sham tDCS and no tDCS conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 50 older adults (mean age = 74.46 years ± 6.49) with self-reported walking dif

How do geneticists and prospective parents interpret and negotiate an uncertain prenatal genetic result? An analysis of clinical interactions.

Variants of unknown significance (VUS) and susceptibility loci (SL) are a challenge in prenatal genetic counseling. The aim of this study was to explore how such uncertain genetic results are communicated, negotiated, and made meaningful by genetics healthcare providers and couples in the actual clinical setting where results are delivered. The study was based on an anthropological approach and the material consisted of observations and audio-recordings from 16 purposively sampled genetic counseling sessions where prenatal testing had identified an inherited or de novo VUS or SL result. Criminalizing Sex Work Clients and Rushed Negotiations among Sex Workers Who Use Drugs in a Canadian Setting.

Previous research indicates that criminalization of sex work is associated with harms among sex workers. In 2013, the Vancouver Police Department changed their sex work policy to no longer target sex workers while continuing to target clients and third parties in an effort to increase the safety of sex workers (similar to "end-demand sex work" approaches being adopted in a number of countries globally). We sought to investigate the trends and correlates of rushing negotiations with clients due to police presence among 359 sex workers who use drugs in Vancouver before and after the guideline ch

Condom negotiation across different relationship types by young women engaged in sex work in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Cambodia's 100% Condom Use Programme is credited with an increase in consistent condom use in commercial sexual interactions and a decrease in HIV prevalence among female sex workers (FSWs). There has been little improvement in condom use between FSWs and non-commercial partners, prompting calls for more innovative approaches to increasing condom use in these relationships. To understand why condoms are used or not used in sexual interactions involving FSWs, we examined condom negotiation across different types of relationships. We conducted 33 in-depth interviews with young (15 to 29 years) w

Gender power imbalance on women's capacity to negotiate self-protection against HIV/AIDS in Botswana and South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Gender power imbalance, which translates into a power imbalance in sexual interactions, is increasingly being recognized as a factor in fueling the spread of HIV/AIDS by increasing the number of unsafe sexual encounters. OBJECTIVES: To examine the influence of gender power imbalance and other factors on women's capacity to negotiate self protection against HIV infection; as well as men's response to the suggested condom use. METHODS: Drawing on data gathered from 2658 women aged 18-49 years in a cross-sectional survey in Kwa Zulu Natal Province of South Africa and Botswana, the s

Negotiating participation in conversations about care planning between people living with mild neurocognitive disorders and their healthcare proxies: a single case analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The time between diagnosis with a mild neurocognitive disorder (MND) and definitive loss of decisional capacity presents a window of opportunity to participate in advance care planning (ACP). To implement early planning, we need to know how to promote healthy relationships between people with MND and their healthcare proxies. Our objective is to examine how people with MND and their proxies discuss engagement in ACP and how proxies orient toward the ability and right of the person with MND to provide answers. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We undertake a conversation

Whose Knowledge Counts in Labour? Obstetric Nurses Negotiating Clinical Judgement, Algorithmic Authority and Woman-Centred Care in Artificial Intelligence-Enhanced Foetal Monitoring.

Artificial intelligence-enhanced foetal monitoring is entering intrapartum care, yet little is known about how it reshapes the credibility of nursing knowledge, professional authority and relational practice. This interpretive description study explored how obstetric nurses negotiated clinical judgement, autonomy and woman-centred care while working with an artificial intelligence-enhanced cardiotocography system in a physician-led tertiary maternity service in Saudi Arabia. Semi-structured interviews with 18 obstetric nurses, each with 6 months to 4 years' experience of the system, were analy

Returning home and re-negotiating mental health: a qualitative study of help-seeking, stigma, and cultural identity among Algerian international student returnees.

PURPOSE: International students navigate major academic, social, and cultural transitions while studying abroad. However, less is known about their mental health after returning home. This qualitative study explored how Algerian international student returnees understood and navigated mental health, stigma, help-seeking, and coping after returning from the United Kingdom. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with Algerian returnees were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis within an interpretivist framework. RESULTS: Reintegration was an emotionally complex transition shaped by cultural

Taking the reins: A grounded theory study of women's experiences of negotiating water immersion for labour and birth after a previous caesarean section.

BACKGROUND: Women seeking a vaginal birth after a caesarean section (VBAC) frequently want to keep their subsequent labour and birth free from intervention. Water immersion (WI) during labour is potentially an effective tool for women having a VBAC for its natural pain-relieving properties. However, negotiating access to WI can be difficult, especially in the context of VBAC. AIM: To explore women's experiences of negotiating WI for labour and birth in the context of VBAC. METHODOLOGY: This Grounded Theory study followed Strauss and Corbin's framework and analytic process. Twenty-five women

The Double-Edged Sword of Trauma Talk: Frozen Fright, Paradoxical Resilience, and the Legal Negotiation of Credibility in Rape Cases.

Trauma is central to understanding victims' responses to sexual assault in legal contexts, but its role in credibility assessments remains contested. This study examines how trauma discourse is expressed, negotiated, and interpreted in rape trials. It is based on a qualitative reflexive thematic analysis of 10 rape cases in Sweden, including recorded courtroom interrogations (i.e., complainants' testimony and cross-examinations) and follow-up interviews with complainants. The results show that references to frozen fright can support credibility by explaining passivity but are often contested a

Perinatal anxiety and compromised bond: A qualitative study of cultural scripts, structural barriers and maternal emotional negotiations in Pakistan.

Maternal-infant bonding is essential for early development and long-term well-being. In low-resource settings like Pakistan, perinatal anxiety, though prevalent, remains under-recognized and can significantly disrupt bonding. While perinatal depression has garnered greater research attention, the cultural and relational dimensions linking anxiety to bonding remain underexplored. This qualitative study examined how maternal distress, sociocultural expectations and healthcare limitations influence bonding. Eighteen pregnant and postnatal women (aged 19-45 years) with clinically significant anxie

Poor people's money during times of uncertainty: Uses, meanings and negotiation of monetary aid measures in the pandemic context.

This study sought to explore the uses meanings and negotiation that female heads of household from low-income areas gave to the transferred money in the COVID health emergency period. Our specific interest is in the withdrawal of 10% of pension funds and the Emergency Family Income (IFE) due to the monetary relevance of both programs. Based on a 10th-month follow-up of 14 female heads of household from low-income areas of Santiago, Chile, this qualitative study examines how the participating women "mark," in Zelizer's sense, the money they received. Thus, we seek to account for how, based on t

Neuromechanical Strategies for Obstacle Negotiation during Overground Locomotion following Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury in Adult Cats.

Following incomplete spinal cord injury in animals, including humans, substantial locomotor recovery can occur. However, functional aspects of locomotion, such as negotiating obstacles, remains challenging. We collected kinematic and electromyography data in 10 adult cats (5 males, 5 females) before and at weeks 1-2 and 7-8 after a lateral mid-thoracic hemisection on the right side of the cord while they negotiated obstacles of three different heights. Intact cats always cleared obstacles without contact. At weeks 1-2 after hemisection, the ipsilesional right hindlimb contacted obstacles in ∼5
