Intraventricular astroblastoma. Case report.

Astroblastoma is a rare primary brain neoplasm that accounts for 0.45-2.8% of brain gliomas. Intraventricular localization is extremely rare. The authors report a case of well-differentiated completely intraventricular astroblastoma in a 6-year-old girl and review the relevant literature. Their patient presented with a 5-week history of progressive nausea and vomiting. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a large, well-demarcated, solid-cystic mass in the left temporooccipital ventricular horn. Macroscopic radical resection of the tumor was performed via the superior temporal sulcus. The p

[Local resection of pancreatic neoplasms: clinical analysis of 17 cases].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of local resection in treatment of pancreatic neoplasms. METHODS: The clinical data of 17 patients with pancreatic neoplasms, 3 males and 14 females, aged 47.9 (34-67), who underwent local resection from January 1996 to June 2007 were analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 17 tumors, 9 were located in the head, 7 located in the body, and 1 located in the tail of pancreas. The diameters of the 17 tumors were 1.5-8.0 cm, 3.6 cm on average, and the diameters of 8 tumors were above 4 cm. Pathological examination confirmed 8 tumors as nonfunctioning insulinoma, 5 as solid pseud

Recurrent gingival fibrous lesions: comparison of 2 cases and potential need for additional classification.

Historically, the classification of localized gingival fibrous lesions has been inconsistent, leading to multiple naming schemes and confusion among pathologists. Currently, lesions are broadly grouped into localized hyperplastic lesions and true neoplasms. Although some cases are clearly defined histologically (i.e., peripheral ossifying fibroma, peripheral odontogenic fibroma), another set of "reactive" fibrous lesions exhibit overlapping histologic features including nondistinctive fibrosis and inflammation. This group can exhibit recurrence, classically related to a local stimulus. However

An ulcerated ileal leiomyosarcoma identified by single-balloon enteroscopy despite nondiagnostic mucosal biopsies.

Gastrointestinal leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignant smooth-muscle neoplasm that may be difficult to diagnose using superficial mucosal biopsy. A 44-year-old woman presented with chronic intermittent abdominal pain and microcytic hypochromic anemia. Retrograde single-balloon enteroscopy identified an ulcerated, stenosing lesion in the distal ileum, whereas six forceps biopsy specimens showed only inflammation and granulation tissue. Segmental ileal resection was therefore performed because malignancy remained strongly suspected. Histological examination demonstrated a spindle-cell neoplasm with

Duodenum-preserving total pancreatic head resection for cystic neoplastic lesions in the head of the pancreas.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Cystic neoplastic lesions of the pancreas are now found with increasing frequency. Duodenum-preserving pancreatic head resection with segmental resection of the duodenum has been introduced for the surgical treatment of inflammatory and neoplastic lesions. We report the following data from 15 patients treated surgically for cystic neoplastic lesions of the pancreas head. METHODS: Duodenum-preserving total pancreatic head resection (DPPHRt) with segmental resection of the duodenum (SD) was performed in eight patients, five with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN)

Myoepithelioma of the Nasal Septum.

Myoepithelioma is defined as myoepithelial cells composed of tumor with solid, myxoid, and reticular growth pattern by the World Health Organization. It is a rare neoplasm that arises in the major salivary gland or minor salivary gland comprising approximately 1% of all salivary gland tumor. This neoplasm occurs in the parotid gland and soft palate mostly, which can be found in other organs. However, up to now, myoepithelioma of nasal septum has not been reported in English medical literature. Histologically, it is grouped as spindle, epitheliod, reticular, and clear cell types. Imaging features of desmoid-type fibromatosis in the teres major muscle.

Desmoid-type fibromatosis is a locally aggressive fibroblastic neoplasm with a tendency for local recurrence, despite adequate surgical resection. Its clinical presentation, biological behavior, and natural history can vary considerably. We present a unique case of desmoid-type fibromatosis arising in the left teres major muscle of a 62-year-old female. Physical examination showed a 7-cm, elastic-hard, immobile, tender mass. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a partially ill-defined mass, with intermediate signal intensity on T1-weighted sequences and heterogenous high signal intensity

Orbital medulloepitheliomas -- with extensive local invasion and metastasis: a series of three cases with review of literature.

Intraocular medulloepithelioma is a rare embryonal neoplasm which usually presents in childhood as a ciliary body mass. This tumor is usually confined to the orbit and rarely tends to be locally aggressive and metastatic. We describe three rare cases of metastatic malignant teratoid medulloepithelioma. The patients were males aged 7, 16 and 25 years with right eye involvement in all the cases. All patients had local recurrence (multiple in two) and metastasis to the intraparotid and cervical lymph nodes. Distinction from round cell tumors and primary salivary gland neoplasms occurring in the p

Sural flap reconstruction of lateral malleolus following undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma resection with 1-year follow-up.

We report a case of a 54-year-old female who presents with a gradually expanding mass at the right lateral malleolus. The diagnosis of undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma was made after a histopathological examination of the mass following a wide tumor excision. The defected soft tissue area was reconstructed using a local flap, reverse sural artery flap. Following the surgical management, multiple radiotherapy sessions were completed. The patient's follow-up result showed no signs of local recurrence or metastasis, and the wound was well-healed with no complications other than paresthesia in

Scalp metastasis from malignant fibrous histiocytoma of bone.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of bone is a relatively rare primary malignant neoplasm and an aggressive tumor, characterized by a high frequency of local recurrence and distant metastasis. The most common metastatic site is the lung (>80%), followed by bone and regional lymph node. Metastasis to other sites is extremely rare. In this report, we describe the skin as being the initial metastatic site for MFH of bone. A 42-year-old female presented with a bone tumor involving the right proximal tibia. She underwent tumor excision and knee joint reconstruction. Histologic examination confir

[Extranodal follicular dendritic cell sarcoma of the tonsils].

Follicular dendritic cell (FDC) sarcoma is a rare tumor deriving from dendritic cells of the lymphoid follicle. Only a few cases of extranodal manifestation of FDC sarcoma of the head and neck have been reported. We describe the case of a 47-year-old woman with a FDC sarcoma of the left tonsil that first manifested 11 years ago. She has suffered three recurrences since this time, at continually reducing intervals. Histologically, the neoplasm consisted of an increased number of spindle-shaped cells with partly hyperchromatic nuclei. The patient underwent local tumor excisions, and then receive

Pancreas-sparing duodenectomy for duodenal neoplasms including malignancies.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Pancreas-sparing duodenectomy (PSD) represents an attractive operation for benign or premalignant duodenal disease. However, use of PSD is controversial for indications that include malignancy. METHODOLOGY: The present study investigated 16 patients who underwent PSD for duodenal neoplasms including adenoma, cancer, carcinoid and non-epithelial tumor. Indications for PSD were divided into 3 categories: early stage neoplasms; isolated duodenal neoplasms in high-risk patients; and duodenal involvement from adjacent organ malignancies. This study classified PSD into 4 types base

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland - A major review.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the lacrimal gland is a rare orbital neoplasm. Despite this, it remains the most common epithelial malignancy of the lacrimal gland. It is notorious for high rates of local recurrence, metastases, and mortality despite aggressive management. The treatment protocols range from orbital exenteration or an excision biopsy followed by adjuvant therapy in the form of radiotherapy or chemotherapy or sometimes both. Older studies suggest that orbital exenteration may result in better local control of disease and possibly better long-term survival. This outlook has bee

Extramammary Paget's Disease in Two Brothers.

Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD), which is considered to be an adenocarcinoma of the apocrine glands, is a rare, slow-growing neoplasm. The standard treatment for local EMPD is surgical resection, however, so far, no effective treatment is found for advanced EMPD. Trastuzumab, which is a recombinant monoclonal antibody against the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 HER2 has been proved to be effective in the treatment of advanced EMPD in some cases where HER2 protein is overexpressed. Herein, we report two cases of EMPD in two brothers. The younger brother who presented as local EMPD

The cytopathology of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor: a report of 55 fine-needle aspiration cases.

BACKGROUND: Among sarcomas, a diagnosis of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is often one of exclusion due to the absence of unequivocally characteristic histopathology, a conclusive immunohistochemical profile, or even a unique chromosomal anomaly. Because of this, the fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytopathology of MPNST is extremely challenging. In the current study, the authors review their FNA experience with this neoplasm. METHODS: The authors searched their combined departmental cytology files for all lesions signed out as MPNST or suspicious for MPNST, as well as their own

Synchronous Triple Primary Gastrointestinal Tract Malignancies: A Case Report.

Multiple primary malignant neoplasms are defined as the occurrence of two or more distinct malignant neoplasms in a single patient. However, synchronous triple primary malignant neoplasms have rarely been reported. We present the case of a 54-year-old male patient who was referred to our outpatient clinic after abnormal findings were detected during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy screening at a local clinic. Comprehensive evaluation using endoscopy, computed tomography, and positron emission tomography led to the simultaneous diagnosis of early gastric, early esophageal, and sigmoid colon ca
