Trichoblastic carcinoma (TBC) is a rare adnexal neoplasm of follicular germ cell differentiation with the potential for local invasion and metastasis. Histologic features of trichoblastic carcinoma have significant overlap with trichoblastoma and basal cell carcinoma (BCC), making diagnosis difficult in some cases. Treatment strategies are not well defined and include surgical excision for localized tumors and systemic therapies for metastatic disease. We present a case of trichoblastic carcinoma clinically resembling a benign cyst that was ultimately treated with Mohs micrographic surgery (MM

Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is an autosomal recessive syndrome associated with a greatly increased incidence of malignant neoplasms in homozygous affected individuals. Heterozygotes for the gene for A-T are thought to comprise about 1% of the general population and, therefore, it is important to know whether this gene also predisposes the heterozygous carrier to cancers. Heterozygous carriers of this gene are common among the close relatives of patients with A-T, although individual carriers cannot be identified by any clinical criterion or laboratory test. For this reason, we compared the inc

There are several genetic diseases with a wide spectrum of congenital bone stigmata in association to cutaneous and visceral benign and malignant neoplasms. Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, also named nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, is an autosomal dominant systemic disease with almost complete penetrance and high intra-familial phenotypic variability, caused by germline mutations of the gene PTCH1. The syndrome is characterized by unusual skeletal changes and high predisposition to the development of multiple basal cell carcinomas, odontogenic keratocysts tumors and other visceral tumors. The Gor

Basaloid salivary gland neoplasms are a diverse and varied group of benign and malignant tumors. The term 'basaloid' is broadly used in reference to cells with elevated nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio, sparse cytoplasm, and hyperchromatic nuclei. However, a subset may also fit within the "small round blue cell tumor" morphologic category or the "biphasic" salivary gland tumor category. Furthermore, there are no established thresholds for the proportion of basaloid tumor cells needed to consider a tumor within the basaloid spectrum. Given the implicit variability in what is considered a basaloid s

Tumors of the anus and perianal skin are rare. Their presentation can vary and often mimics common benign anal pathology, thereby delaying diagnosis and appropriate and timely treatment. The anatomy of this region is complex because it represents the progressive transition from the digestive system to the skin with many different co-existing types of cells and tissues. Squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal is the most frequent tumor found in the anal and perianal region. Less-frequent lesions include Bowen's and Paget's disease, basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, and adenocarcinoma. This arti

The skin is the organ most commonly affected by malignancies. Various cancers of the skin show a dramatic increase in incidence over the last decades. Epithelial skin tumors are most frequently, e.g., basal cell carcinoma and the squamous cell carcinoma with its precursors, the actinic keratoses. Melanoma, which is extremely difficult to treat in advanced tumor stages, is dreaded. Besides that, there are other epithelial malignant diseases, e.g. Morbus Bowen and adnexal tumors originating from the skin appendices. Mesenchymal malignant neoplasias such as Morbus Kaposi, angiosarcomas and other

PURPOSE: The vast majority of urothelial carcinomas infiltrating the bladder are consistente with high-grade tumors that can be easily recognized as malignant in needle prostatic biopsies. In contrast, the histological changes of low-grade urothelial carcinomas in this kind of biopsy have not been studied.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We describe the clinicopathologic features of two patients with low-grade bladder carcinomas infiltrating the prostate. They reported dysuria and hematuria. Both had a slight elevation of the prostate specific antigen and induration of the prostatic lobes. Needle biop

We recently observed atypical adenomatous metaplasia of eccrine glands in an excisional biopsy of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This led us to this study in an effort to ascertain whether this reaction pattern is common to all excisional biopsies and, depending on its presence in association with residual tumor, whether it is lineage specific. We performed a retrospective review of 201 excisional biopsies and noted that adenomatous metaplasia was present in 35 of 201 (17%) of the cases, of which 19 had residual tumor. Adenomatous metaplasia seemed to be more frequent in epithelial neoplasms s

A case of nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome is presented and its varied clinical manifestations and multi-system involvement are emphasised. Our case presented with an early onset of symptoms but sought medical help later on for progressively increasing jaw swelling and pain. On further evaluation, multiple pigmented skin papules, palmar pits, multiple jaw cysts, skull bone osteoporosis, bifid ribs and kyphosis were present. Systemic involvement was minimal. There was no significant family history.

The neurological symptomatology of the basal cell nevus syndrome (Gorlin-Goltz syndrome) is described based on a personal observation and previously published cases. The case presented here, with dominant cerebellar symptomatology, optic atrophy and pyramidal signs, is discussed pathophysiologically either as a primary central nervous manifestation of the basic disturbance or as a secondary cerebral paraneoplastic process.

In the past, several authors described an association of cutaneous malignant melanoma (MM) with other neoplasms. As their results were not conclusive, we designed this study with the aim to determine whether the frequency and spectrum of coexisting neoplasms in patients with cutaneous MM are either a significant or a random event. Therefore, the histories of 623 patients with primary MM from our clinic have been evaluated by a direct questionnaire. Diagnosis of MM has been established by histologic examination after excisional biopsy. The male/female (M/F) ratio was 240/383, the mean age 52.5

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (GGS) is an infrequent multisystemic disease with an autosomal dominant trait, which depicted presence of numerous basal cell carcinoma in conjunction with multiorgan abnormalities. This syndrome may be diagnosed early by a dentist by routine radiographic exams in the first decade of life, since the keratocystic odontogenic tumour are usually one of the first manifestations of the syndrome. This article includes a case report of the GGS with regard to its history, incidence, etiology, features, investigations, diagnostic criteria, keratocystic odontogenic tumour and treat

Basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS), also known as Gorlin syndrome, is characterized by an aberrant activation of the hedgehog (Hh) pathway, most cases being caused by PTCH1 mutations. However, certain features such as multiple hereditary infundibulocystic basal cell carcinomas (MHIBCC), sclerotic fibromas, childhood medulloblastoma or meningioma may be relatively specific to a SUFU mutation. We present two patients with MHIBCC, along with a more complex cutaneous and extracutaneous phenotype. MHIBCC syndrome and BCNS may share clinical features and, indeed, both syndromes probably represent diff

Bronchiolar adenoma (BA) is a generally benign peripheral lung neoplasm with a bilayered structure of basal and luminal cells. Recently, an increasing number of bronchiolar adenoma-like tumor with squamous epithelial metaplasia (BATSM) have been reported, raising the question of whether they represent variant subtypes of BA or potentially novel tumor entities. Pulmonary metastasis of ameloblastoma (MA) shares morphological similarities with BATSM, exhibiting TTF-1/Napsin A-positive luminal cells and P40/P63-positive basal cells; this overlap can lead to misdiagnosis of MA as BATSM. We collecte

BACKGROUND: Adenoid basal carcinoma (ABC) of uterine cervix is an extraordinary example of carcinoma with both basal and glandular cell types. Here we present such a case of ABC combined with invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of 55-year-old woman.
METHODS: The tumor was stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE), Mucicarmine, PAS/Alcian Blue, CK AE1/AE3, CK7, CD117 and Ki67.
RESULTS: The whitish-grey 1 cm in-depth infiltration of endocervix was composed of infiltrative coalescing areas of CK AE1/AE3 positive carcinoma with peripheral palisading of basal cell type with spaces lined by Mucicarmi

BACKGROUND: Basal cell adenoma (BCA) and adenocarcinoma (BCAd) are two of the least frequent salivary gland tumors. We describe the largest series of these neoplasms, spanning over a period of 50 years (1970-2020), diagnosed and treated in a single Institution.
METHODS: Sixty-eight cases were identified. Clinical and pathological data were collected and correlated with outcome.
RESULTS: Forty-one BCA and 27 BCAd were identified. BCA cases had almost pristine prognosis, with only a relapse in a tumor inadequately excised. Ten patients with BCAd developed metastases, and 14 died from the disea
