BACKGROUND: This report describes a case of uterine leiomyoma and cystic endometrial hyperplasia in an Asian elephant (Elephas maximus).
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 74-year-old female elephant in captivity was necropsied. At necropsy, the uterus was markedly enlarged, and a firm, white nodule measuring 10 × 10 × 8 cm protruded from the uterine wall into the lumen of the right uterine segment. Additionally, multiple cystic dilations (0.5-4 cm in diameter) were observed throughout the uterine segment. The mucosa was diffusely red with a moderate amount of crumbly clots in the lumen. Histologically, a b

Connective tissue tumors located inside the abdomen are a rare heterogeneous group of tumors, except for gastro-intestinal stromal tumors. They may be benign, malignant, or intermediate in terms of biologic potential. Pathologists have to remember the list of all the lesions possibly involved, with their immunohistochemical characteristics, and to know which molecular analyses are needed, with which expected results, and by which team they can be performed. The main tumor types are discussed with diagnostic tools and treatment consequences.

This is a classification of tumours of fibrous tissue, fat, muscle, blood and lymph vessels, and mast cells, irrespective of the region of the body in which they arise. Tumours of fibrous tissue are divided into fibroma, fibrosarcoma (including "canine haemangiopericytoma"), other sarcomas, equine sarcoid, and various tumour-like lesions. The histological appearance of the tumours is described and illustrated with photographs.

BACKGROUND: Oral ulcers represent a full thickness loss of the mucosal epithelium leading to exposure of the submucosal connective tissue. These are common and usually self-limited lesions, although they may sometimes result from neoplasms, most commonly squamous cell carcinoma. Lymphoproliferative disorders may be difficult to diagnose in apthous ulcers since they mimic reactive inflammation.
METHODS: This review presents ten rare oral lymphoid proliferations which should not be missed when assessing oral ulcer biopsies.
RESULTS: The ten lesions include several with diagnostic cells which l

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is an important therapeutic option for gastric adenoma and early gastric cancer (EGC). However, ESD is technically difficult when lesions are located in the pyloric area. Our aim was to introduce the transnasal endoscope-assisted ESD method, which provides for excellent cutting-line visualization through control of submucosal traction. A total of eight patients with gastric adenoma or EGC located in the pyloric area were consecutively enrolled. A primary operating endoscope was used to perform marking, incision, submucosal dissection, and hemostasis, whil

Primary chest wall tumors are rare and represent a challenging clinical entity. Preoperative work-up includes a thorough history, radiographic imaging, and a biopsy approach that does not make a future definitive resection more difficult. Treatment decisions are based on tumor histology, stage, local aggressiveness, and responsiveness to chemotherapy and radiation. Wide excision is the foundation of treatment of most malignant primary chest wall tumors. The role of radiation therapy in the neoadjuvant or adjuvant setting is to reduce local recurrence. The use of adjuvant chemotherapy is more c

Cardiac fibromas are rare primary cardiac tumors. Although they constitute a small portion of cardiac neoplasms, they are the most common primary cardiac neoplasm group in childhood after rhabdomyomas. Cardiac fibromas, composed of connective tissue and fibroblasts, are benign. They may be asymptomatic, cause symptoms such as intracavitary obstruction, coronary artery compression, thromboembolic events, and conduction defects, or result in sudden death. Approximately 180 to 200 cases of cardiac fibromas have been reported in the literature, and most are located in the ventricles. Since fibroma

An ~10-y-old male sheep had anorexia and progressive weight loss for ~1 mo. The sheep was emaciated, and 20 d later, became recumbent and lethargic, and was hypoglycemic (0.33 mmol/L; RI: 2.6-4.4 mmol/L). The sheep was euthanized because of poor prognosis, and submitted for autopsy. We found no gross lesions in the pancreas; however, histologically, focal proliferations of round-to-polygonal cells were separated by connective tissue into small nests. These proliferating cells, which had abundant eosinophilic-to-amphophilic cytoplasm and hyperchromatic nuclei, were immunopositive for insulin an

Adrenal pseudocysts are cystic lesions arising within the adrenal gland enclosed by a fibrous connective tissue wall that lacks lining cells. They can attain a huge size and pose a diagnostic challenge with a broad range of differentials including benign and malignant neoplasms. There are only a few small case series and case reports describing these lesions. We report a series of five patients who presented with "indeterminate" abdominal cystic lesions and were later on found to have adrenal pseudocyst. Four out of five patients presented with non-specific abdominal symptoms, and one patient

Livedoid vasculopathy is a rare, chronic-recurrent occlusive disorder in the microcirculation of dermal vessels. The clinical appearance is characterized by Livedo racemosa, painful ulceration, located in the distal parts of the lower extremities, followed by healing as porcelain-white, atrophic scars, the so-called Atrophie blanche. Different conditions that can promote a hypercoagulable state, such as inherited and acquired thrombophilias, autoimmune connective-tissue diseases and neoplasms, can be associated with livedoid vasculopathy. Therefore, livedoid vasculopathy is currently considere

BACKGROUND: Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is a rare low-grade malignant tumor affecting the minor salivary glands; nasopharyngeal involvement is uncommon.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 38-year-old male patient presented with a 3.2 × 4.5 × 4.4 cm expansile mass obliterating the lumen of the nasopharynx and extending into the left nasal cavity. Histopathologically, the tumor was characterized by clear round to polygonal epithelial cells arranged in anastomosing trabeculae and solid nests. The stroma consisted of fibromyxoid connective tissue with areas of intense hyalinization and desmoplasi

A variety of diseases, other than the common Lev-Lenègre disease, are associated with cardiac conduction system abnormalities. These include acute processes, such as acute rheumatic fever, and other disorders, such as sarcoidosis, connective tissue disorders, neoplasms, and bacterial endocarditis with cardiac abscess formation. The purpose of the study is to raise awareness of these rare conditions. We present 10 adult patients (4 males and 6 females) with a mean age of 47 years (range: 19-69), with various rare diseases associated with heart block, who needed temporary or permanent pacemaker

A 64-year-old woman presented with a 2-week history of an asymptomatic mass involving the lower lip. Histopathological examination showed a well-circumscribed tumour composed of many lobules separated by thin, fibrous connective tissue. Individual lobules were composed of round or polyhedral tumour cells, which had a characteristic finely granular and vacuolated cytoplasm and eccentric hyperchromatic nuclei. Positive staining was observed with Periodic acid-Shiff, and immunohistochemistry for cytokeratin, alpha-1 antitrypsin, and S-100 protein resulting in a final diagnosis of acinic cell carc

A 21-year-old thoroughbred mare had a 35 x 14 x 10 cm mass involving the mammary gland. Metastases were found in the kidneys, lungs, skeletal muscles, and regional lymph nodes. Histopathologic examination of the tumor revealed a ductal solid carcinoma with extensive intraductal and intralobular involvement and focal infiltration of the adjacent stroma. The intralobular neoplasms were divided into irregularly shaped islands and sheets of polygonal and spindle-shaped epithelial cells by thick or thin fibrous connective tissue bundles. The neoplastic cells had a small or moderate amount of cytopl

The preputial and clitoral glands of 111-114-week-old B6C3F1-mice from a carcinogenesis experiment showed histomorphological characteristics. The lesions were considered to be spontaneous age changes, because the type, incidence and severity do not distinguish treated animals from controls. The most common findings were atrophy of the acini, lymphocytic infiltrates and hyperplasia of the squamous cell epithelium. Less frequently abscesses, fibrosis following a possible inflammatory process, an increase in the amount of subepithelial connective tissue, cystic dilatation of the central duct or s

BACKGROUND: Benign subcutaneous lesions of the trunk are typically excised through overlying skin incisions, which can result in permanent, potentially disfiguring scars. We previously reported our experience with transaxillary subcutaneous endoscopic approach for removal of benign lesions of the neck. Here we report a similar approach for removing benign lesions of the trunk and lower extremity.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 4 consecutive subcutaneous endoscopic procedures for benign truncal and lower extremity lesions from November 2006 to October 2008. The lesions includ

Multinucleated giant cells (MGCs) are a prominent histological feature of various mesenchymal neoplasms and are often considered a criterion of malignancy. Mesenchymal neoplasms with MGCs for which the cell lineage is unclear generally are referred to as giant cell sarcomas. Here we characterize the gross, histologic, and immunohistochemical features of 90 giant cell sarcomas in domestic pet rabbits. Based on the anatomic location and histologic and immunohistochemical findings, 18 cases were classified as histiocytic sarcomas (HS) and 72 cases as anaplastic sarcomas (AS). At postmortem examin

Fourier transform infrared imaging (FTIRI) is a powerful tool for analyzing biochemical changes in tumoral tissues. The head and neck region is characterized by a great variety of lesions, with different degrees of malignancy, which are often difficult to diagnose. Schneiderian papillomas are sinonasal benign neoplasms arising from the Schneiderian mucosa; they can evolve into malignant tumoral lesions (squamous cell carcinoma). In addition, they can sometimes be confused with the more common inflammatory polyps. Therefore, an early and definitive diagnosis of this pathology is mandatory. Prog

Pulmonary eosinophilic infiltrates include an heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by the presence of eosinophils in the lungs as detected by bronchoalveolar lavage or tissue biopsy, with or without blood eosinophilia. The disease can be idiopathic (simple pulmonary eosinophilia, acute and chronic eosinophilic pneumonia, hypereosinophilic syndrome), secondary (to drugs, parasites, fungal and mycobacterial infection, irradiation, toxic products) or associated with diffuse lung diseases (connective tissue diseases and some neoplasms). Pathologists faced with eosinophils in the lungs (e
