The diagnosis and treatment of cancer has been shown to precipitate posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in some cancer survivors. However few studies have considered the links between cancer-related PTSD and theoretical models of PTSD. This study considers a cognitive model of PTSD by examining the relationship between sense of coherence, and fear of recurrence to posttraumatic stress symptomatology (PTSS) in haematological cancer survivors. Thirty-six participants completed the PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C), the Impact of Events Scale-Revised (IES-R), the sense of coherence scale a

BACKGROUND: Parents who experience the death of a child may develop a range of mental health problems including insomnia and prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Insomnia symptoms predict worsening of prolonged grief symptoms and persons with more chronic insomnia trajectories may be at risk of developing PGD. However, it remains to be established when prolonged grief and insomnia symptomatology co-occur and which potential risk factors heighten the risk of comorbid insomnia and prolonged grief. METHODS: To address these questions, we conducted a cross-sectional, registry-based survey study involvi

BACKGROUND: The medical traumatic stress model is commonly applied to childhood cancer, assuming that the diagnosis of cancer is a traumatic event. However, to the authors' knowledge, little is known regarding what specifically children perceive as stressful about cancer or how it compares with other stressful events more often experienced by children.
METHODS: Children with cancer (254 children) and demographically similar peers without a history of serious illness (202 children) identified their most stressful life event as part of a diagnostic interview assessing for symptoms of posttrauma

Results of clinico-anamnestic examinations of 171 patients with epileptic seizures are presented. Etiologically significant were unfavourable factors in the antenatal period, natal traumas, infections, neuroinfections, and craniocerebral postnatal injuries, combinations of the above factors, and intracranial newgrowths. In the first three years of life, generalized seizures were prevailing. The use of additional, especially roentgeno-contrast examinations was of a substantial aid in the diagnosis. Approaches to epilepsy prophylaxis in the patients examined have been outlined.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this retrospective study was to report the results of surgery in painful post-traumatic neuromas of the digital nerves treated by collagen conduits after excision of the neuromas, when two stumps were available.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients operated on for painful neuroma in our institution and having undergone repair with collagen conduits. Their files were retrieved by a coding file (CCAM version 10). Ten patients involving nine digital nerves and one common digital nerve were included. Primary outcome data points were static two-point discrim

OBJECTIVE: Physical abuse is one of the most important public health problems, but little is known about physical abuse of cancer patients. The objects of this study are (1) to identify whether cancer patients have sustained physical abuse; (2) to explore clinical characteristics of the abused patients.
METHODS: We reviewed 584 cancer patients referred to our psychiatry clinic by a cancer center hospital and investigated whether there were victims of physical abuse among these patients. We also investigated psychiatric characteristics of the abused patients.
RESULTS: Of these 584 patients, t

OBJECTIVE: To predict posttraumatic stress symptoms in parents of survivors of childhood cancer, using as predictors the following: personality (trait anxiety); current family and individual variables (perceived life threat, perceived treatment intensity, life events, family functioning, and social support); posttreatment variables (time since treatment ended, child anxiety, medical sequelae); and treatment events (age at diagnosis, radiation therapy, intensity of treatment).
METHOD: Mothers and fathers of 6- to 20-year-old survivors of childhood cancer (n = 331 families) completed a question

OBJECTIVE: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is curative in several life-threatening pediatric diseases but may affect children and their families inducing depression, anxiety, burnout symptoms, and post-traumatic stress symptoms, as well as post-traumatic growth (PTG). The aim of this study was to investigate the co-occurrence of different aspects of such responses in parents of children that had undergone HSCT.
METHODS: Questionnaires were completed by 260 parents (146 mothers and 114 fathers) 11-198 months after HSCT: the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Shirom-Melam

BACKGROUND: In pediatric oncology, effective clinic-based management of acute and long-term distress in families calls for investigation of determinants of parents' psychological response to the child's cancer. We examined the relationship between parents' prior exposure to traumatic life events (TLE) and the occurrence of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) following their child's cancer diagnosis. Factors mediating the TLE-PTSS relationship were analyzed.
METHODOLOGY: The study comprised 169 parents (97 mothers, 72 fathers) of 103 cancer diagnosed children (median age: 5,9 years; range 0.1

PURPOSE: Few studies have been conducted to elucidate the psychological distress of terminally ill cancer patients. This study attempted to determine the prevalence of adjustment disorders (AD), major depression (MD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among terminally ill cancer patients, to identify factors that contribute to them, and to determine how they change longitudinally.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Consecutive terminally ill cancer patients were recruited. Patients were assessed for psychiatric disorders by structured clinical interview twice: once at the time of their registratio

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic may induce post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms among patients with cancer, who also face adaptations to their treatment. The authors assessed the occurrence of PTSD symptoms, investigated pandemic-induced adjustments in medical oncology practice in patients with cancer, and explored risk factors for PTSD and the association between PTSD symptoms, insomnia, and quality of life (QoL).
METHODS: This prospective French study was conducted in patients with solid/hematologic tumors who were receiving medical treatment in the day care departments of 2 can

BACKGROUND: Approximately 10% of the individuals experiencing the death of a loved one develop prolonged grief disorder (PGD) after bereavement. Family members of haematological cancer patients might be particularly burdened since their loss experience is preceded by a very strenuous time of disease and aggressive treatment. However, support needs of relatives of cancer patients often remain unmet, also after the death of the patient. Therapeutic possibilities are enhanced by providing easily available and accessible Internet-based therapies. This study will adapt and evaluate an Internet-base

OBJECTIVES: PTSD prevalence rates in cardiac and cancer patients greatly vary probably due to diverging samples, designs and assessments. Aim of this study was therefore to compare prevalence rates of PTSD as well as instruments assessing PTSD in different cardiac and cancer patient groups.
METHODS: A total of 274 cardiac and cancer patients were examined with the Post-Traumatic Stress Scale 10 (PTSS-10) and the Impact of Event Scale - revised (IES-R). Presence of PTSD was validated by Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID).
RESULTS: Diagnostic criteria for the existence of PTSD wer

GOAL OF WORK: The objective of this exploratory retrospective study was to assess the effects of breast cancer diagnosis upon the psychological distress of adult breast cancer patients and their mothers, particularly mothers who experienced past trauma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four groups of mother-daughter dyads were evaluated using self-reporting measures of psychological distress [Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI)], familial support (PFS), and adjustment to cancer (MAC, IES): breast cancer patients whose mothers were Holocaust survivors (group 1), breast cancer patients with non-traumatized mot

Allostatic load (AL) is the term used to describe cumulative physiological wear and tear that results from repeated efforts to adapt to stressors over time. Operationalized as a composite index of biological risk factors (e.g., blood pressure, cholesterol, glycosylated hemoglobin, and cortisol, norepinephrine, and epinephrine), AL has been shown to increase with age, predict long-term morbidity and mortality among the elderly, and be associated with low parent education in a large adolescent sample. However, AL has not yet been studied in samples with putative "high stress" or posttraumatic st

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize mothers' communication with their children in a sample of families with a new or newly relapsed pediatric cancer diagnosis, first using factor analysis and second using structural equation modeling to examine relations between self-reported maternal distress (anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress) and maternal communication in prospective analyses. A hierarchical model of communication was proposed, based on a theoretical framework of warmth and control.
METHODS: The sample included 115 children (age 5-17 years) with new or newly relapsed ca

OBJECTIVE: The present study examines the factor structure of the Japanese version of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI-J) among bereaved family members who lost loved ones to cancer after home-based palliative care in Japan. It evaluates the relationships between total score, each PTGI-J domain, and participants' having a religious belief, gender, age, relationship to the patient, and time since patient death.
PROCEDURE: Bereaved family members (n = 849) completed the PTGI-J and a demographic questionnaire. The factor structure was tested using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and

OBJECTIVE: Art therapy has been shown to be helpful to cancer patients at different stages in the course of their illness, especially during isolation for bone marrow transplantation, during radiotherapy treatment, and after treatment. The aim of this study is twofold: (1) to assess whether patients during chemotherapy sessions perceive art therapy as helpful and (2) to outline in which way art therapy is perceived as helpful.
METHOD: 157 cancer patients attending an Oncology Day Hospital (Siena, Italy) met the art therapist during their chemotherapy sessions. The art therapist used the same
