Papillary squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx.

A case of papillary squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx in a 50-year-old man is reported. The lesion was located in the supraglottic region and grossly presented a characteristic finger-like pattern of growth. The tumour pursued an indolent clinical course, and the patient is well and free of disease after 47 months of follow-up. The present paper recapitulates the macro- and microscopic features of this rare neoplasm and stresses its differential diagnosis with other exophytic squamous cell carcinomas of the region.

Anchoring fibrils in a spindle cell squamous carcinoma.

To the best of our knowledge anchoring fibrils in tumours have been reported to occur only in cutaneous cylindromas and squamous cell carcinomas of oral mucosa and larynx. In this paper we describe a difficult-to-diagnose malignant spindle cell tumour where the striking feature was the presence of large numbers of anchoring plaques and anchoring fibrils in the tumour matrix. On the basis of light microscopic and immunohistochemical studies several diagnoses were preferred, such as malignant fibrous histiocytoma, neurofibrosarcoma, malignant schwannoma, desmoplastic melanoma and spindle cell sq

Epithelial abnormalities and precancerous lesions of anterior urethra in patients with penile carcinoma: a report of 89 cases.

Urethral and penile tissues and their neoplasms are considered anatomically and pathogenetically different. Since we observed urethral dysplastic lesions and some similarities between noninvasive and invasive lesions of the anterior urethra and glans, we designed this study to document epithelial urethral abnormalities in patients with penile squamous cell carcinoma. We examined urethral epithelia from 170 penectomies with invasive squamous cell carcinoma finding a variety of primary epithelial abnormalities in 89 cases (52%) and secondary invasion of penile carcinoma to urethra in 42 cases (2

Vulvar Reconstruction with Keystone Flaps after Radical Vulvectomy.

Vulvar cancer is a rare oncologic pathology, accounting for only 3%-5% of all gynecologic neoplasms, with squamous cell carcinoma responsible for more than 90% of these cases; the remaining 10% includes Paget disease, lichen sclerosus, and vulvar melanoma. Radical vulvectomy has become the gold standard treatment due to the high recurrence rate and effective local control in patients with squamous cell carcinoma stages IB to IVA. To address these needs, various reconstructive options have been reported in the literature, each potentially offering different results due to their diverse nature.

Bowen disease with matrical differentiation: Report of an exceptional histopathologic presentation.

Matrical differentiation is the distinctive feature of pilomatricoma and other purely matrical adnexal neoplasms; additionally, foci of matrical differentiation have been also described in hybrid cysts of Gardner syndrome, as well as in a wide variety of benign and malignant cutaneous tumors, including basal cell carcinoma. We report an exceptional case of Bowen disease exhibiting multiple foci of matrical differentiation, as confirmed by means of immunohistochemical studies. Several types of divergent, non-squamous differentiation have been exceptionally reported in cutaneous squamous cell ca

Nonsquamous neoplasms of the larynx.

While squamous cell carcinoma is the most common neoplasm to involve the larynx, several other histologic tumor types can occur. The laryngologist should consider a nonsquamous neoplasm when the tumor is long-standing, pigmented, covered by intact mucosa, or there is a history of neoplasia. Careful endoscopy, often using microlaryngoscopy, and careful handling of the tissue will ensure accurate diagnosis.

[Marjolin's ulcer: burn scar carcinoma].

The term Marjolin's ulcer means the malignant transformation of chronic ulcers, sinus tract and burn scars. The most frequently produced neoplasm is squamous cell carcinoma. The pathogeny is unknown, involving mutations in the Fas gene. Main therapeutic management are consist of prophylactic measures, avoiding repeated traumas and prolonged cure periods. We present the case of a 48-year-old male with squamous cell carcinoma on the old burn scar of legs that evolved favorably after excision.

Pathology of early upper GI cancers.

Local endoscopic resection techniques for early neoplasms of the gastro-intestinal tract require exact description of the depth of infiltration for the decision of endoscopic versus surgical therapy. Subdivision of mucosal neoplasms is used only in the oesophagus. Mucosal oesophageal carcinoma (squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma) can be subdivided into m1-m3 and m1-m4. Distinction of high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia and mucosal carcinoma is without clinical relevance since the diagnosis of high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia should always first lead to a (diagnostic) endoscopic re

Oral cavity and pharynx.

Imaging of the oral cavity and pharynx often is required in three settings: assessment of an inflammatory mass in association with odontogenic, tonsillar, or pharyngeal infections; determination of the cause of a submucosal mass; and staging of squamous-cell carcinomas. Spread of infection from the oral cavity and pharynx can lead to abscesses in the masticatory space, the retropharyngeal compartment, and in a parapharyngeal location. Submucosal masses include congenital cysts (thyroglossal and dermoid), benign neoplasms (hemangioma, schwannomas, pleomorphic adenomas juvenile angiofibromas), i

The pathology of head and neck tumors: squamous and mucous-gland carcinomas of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and larynx, part 6.

Carcinomas of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are statistically dominated by squamous-cell lesions, which account for between 85% and 90% of the epithelial malignancies in these sites. Neoplasms of glandular derivation are far less frequent, accounting for between 4% and 8% of carcinomas in this region. Both classes of malignancy, however, indicate an ominous prognosis for their hosts, and for both, it is the extent of the cancer, and hence the clinical stage, that is the major determinant. The clinicopathologic characteristics of squamous-cell and glandular carcinomas of the nasal cavi

Basaloid squamous carcinoma of the larynx. A potential diagnostic pitfall.

Basaloid squamous carcinoma is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma. It is frequently diagnosed at an advanced stage with metastases. Histologically, it is identical to basaloid carcinoma at other anatomical sites. Some authors suggest that it may be associated with second primary tumors. Others implicate the Epstein-Barr and human papilloma viruses. All reports but one warn of its aggressive biological behavior. Our case concerns a 52-year-old man who had a small lesion in his right cord. Biopsy of the lesion was performed twice, and conventional squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed; th

An unusual presentation of an aggressive spindle cell skin cancer.

Spindle cell squamous cell carcinoma (SCSCC) is a rare subtype of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) that was first reported around 1900. Its potential for metastasis is uncertain. There has been noted a relationship to previous exposure to radiation therapy with subsequent aggressive presentation. We report an unusual case of a widely metastatic, poorly differentiated cutaneous spindle cell neoplasm with a rapidly progressive clinical course and dismal outcome in several days. This is one of a very few cases in the literature in which a skin cancer recurs with such diffuse metastasis and disastrou

Diagnostic utility of thymic epithelial markers CD205 (DEC205) and Foxn1 in thymic epithelial neoplasms.

Foxn1 and CD205 (DEC205) are novel thymic epithelial markers that are important for thymic organogenesis and the positive selection process for thymocytes, respectively. These markers were immunohistochemically applied to a total of 77 cases of thymic epithelial neoplasms comprised of 58 cases of thymomas, 17 cases of thymic carcinomas, and 2 cases of thymic neuroendocrine carcinomas. Foxn1 was diffusely expressed in nuclear staining in all cases of type B thymoma and all but 1 case of type A thymoma, whereas the expression was generally focal in thymic carcinoma (76%). The expression was iden

Primary intracranial squamous cell carcinoma in a mule.

Primary intracranial squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm reported only in humans and usually originates from epidermoid or dermoid cysts. We describe the first case of primary intracranial squamous cell carcinoma in an animal, emphasizing its clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical findings. A 15-year-old male mule was euthanized after bilateral blindness. At necropsy, the optic nerve, optic chiasm, pituitary gland and trigeminal nerve were surrounded by a multilobulated, firm, whitish mass interspersed by yellowish, irregular, friable multifocal areas of cavitation. Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia of thyroid gland in a male patient: a case report and literature review.

Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia (SMECE) was first described by Chan et al in 1991. It is characterized by nest or strands of epidermoid tumor cells with squamous differentiation, rare mucous cells, prominent sclerotic stroma, eosinophilic and lymphoplasmacytic infiltration, and a background of chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis in the non-neoplastic thyroid gland. It is important to recognize SMECE of thyroid and differentiate it from squamous cell carcinoma or other neoplasms with squamous differentiation/metaplasia. In published cases, the SMECE of thyroid gland predominan

Absence of gene mutations in KIT-positive carcinoma showing thymus-like elements of the thyroid.

KIT, a tyrosine kinase receptor protein encoded by the proto-oncogene c-kit, is overexpressed in human neoplasms such as gastrointestinal stromal tumors and thymic squamous cell carcinoma. However, the role of KIT expression and mutations in carcinoma showing thymus-like elements is not fully understood. In the current study, 8 cases of carcinoma showing thymus-like elements were reported, and immunohistochemical staining with KIT and CD5 was performed. Mutation analyses in the juxtamembrane domains (exons 9 and 11) and in the tyrosine kinase domains (exons 13 and 17) were performed on KIT-pos

Analysis of expression of p63 and caspase-3 and their predictive value in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of maxillary sinus.

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: Maxillary sinus cancer is a malignant neoplasm with a prevalence of 3 to 5% of tumors in the head and neck and less than 1% of all malignant neoplasms. The role of p63 and caspase-3 and their predictive value in squamous cell carcinoma of maxillary sinus (SCCMS) remains an underdeveloped and controversial issue that determined the relevance of the study. The aim: To analyze the relationship between the level of expression of p63 and caspase-3 and clinical and morphological characteristics of squamous cell carcinoma of maxillary sinus and to determine their prognostic s
