Nerve conductions studies in experimental models of autoimmune neuritis: A meta-analysis and guideline.

Nerve conduction studies (NCS) are essential to assess peripheral nerve fiber function in research models of immune-mediated neuritis. However, the current lack of standard protocols and reference values impedes data comparability across models and studies. We performed a systematic review and subsequent meta-analysis of the last 30 years of NCS of immune-mediated neuritis in Lewis-rats. Twenty-six papers met the inclusion criteria for meta-analysis. Extracted data showed considerable heterogeneity of recorded nerve conduction velocity (NCV) and compound muscle action potential (CMAP). Studies

The optimum hand temperature to study nerve conduction in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.

To define the skin temperature at which diseased nerves are better differentiated from the healthy. Motor and sensory conduction of median and ulnar nerve were evaluated in 52 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and 52 matched healthy controls at environmental skin temperature (mean 32-33 °C), after warming by an average of 2 °C and cooling to approximately 6 °C below baseline. In the hot condition, group comparisons for the median nerve showed a similar rate of distal motor latency (DML) reduction and sensory conduction velocity (SCV) increase in CTS and controls. With cold, the rate o

Can the severity of central lumbar stenosis affect the results of nerve conduction study?

To evaluate the effect of the severity of spinal stenosis on the peripheral nerves of lower extremities by nerve conduction study (NCS).One hundred fifteen patients with lumbar spinal stenosis were recruited retrospectively in this study. The grading system for lumbar stenosis was used based on the degree of separation of the cauda equina. The degree of cauda equina damage caused by lumbar central stenosis was assessed by NCS of peripheral nerves. Multiple regression analysis was used to estimate which factors affect peripheral nerve injury, according to the presence of DM, total grading of lu

Comparison of the Two Types of Stimulating Electrodes in the Study of Motor Nerve Conduction in Dogs.

In this research two kinds of stimulation electrodes were compared in motor nerve conduction study: needle electrodes used in human medicine and electrodes made of injection needles connected to the stimulator via alligator-type electrodes. A study was conducted in 22 mixed-breed dogs. The resulting values of the potential amplitudes of the stimulus, the parameters of the complex muscle potentials, and the motor nerve conduction velocity were statistically compared. There was no statistical difference between the parameters obtained with the two types of stimulation electrodes. The results of

The Relationship between Nerve Conduction Study and Clinical Grading of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is the most common nerve entrapment. Subjective sensory symptoms are common place in patients with CTS, but sometimes they are not supported by objective findings in the neurological examination. Electrodiagnostic (EDx) studies are a valid and reliable means of confirming the diagnosis. The amplitudes along with the conduction velocities of the sensory nerve action potential and motor nerve action potential reflect the functional state of axons, and are useful parameters and complement the clinical grading in the assessment of severity of CTS. AIM: T

Ultrasonic assessment of females with carpal tunnel syndrome proved by nerve conduction study.

INTRODUCTION: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most commonly diagnosed entrapment neuropathy of the upper extremity. The objective of this study was to diagnose CTS and to assess its severity using high resolution ultrasound (HRUS) depending on the results of nerve conduction study (NCS). METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study, in which HRUS was performed at 63 wrists of 35 female patients with different severity of CTS (as proved by NCS). Furthermore, 40 healthy volunteers (80 wrists) underwent the same tests as the patients and have been chosen to match the patients in gender, age,

Hand-held nerve conduction device in carpal tunnel syndrome: a prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: We assessed the clinical impact of replacing standard neurophysiologic testing with a hand-held device (Mediracer) for diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). METHODS: One hundred patients (200 hands) with suspected CTS were studied by blinded assessors [Hand-therapist (HT)1 and Consultant Neurophysiologist] using the Mediracer, followed by standard neurophysiologic testing. To simulate testing by personnel without neurological training, Mediracer recordings were analyzed separately by an assessor who had not seen the patients (HT2). RESULTS: Correlation of the CTS grades wa

Prediction of lower extremity strength by nerve conduction study in cauda equina syndrome.

An electrodiagnostic test is more useful than the lower extremity isometric strength test for objectively determining the degree of nerve damage and prognosis in cauda equina syndromes (CES). This study evaluated the correlation between nerve conduction study (NCS) parameters and the lower extremity isometric strength and manual muscle test (MMT) grades. The isometric strengths of knee extension (KE), ankle dorsiflexion (ADF), and ankle plantarflexion (APF) were measured. NCS parameters, MMT, and isometric strength of femoral, peroneal, and tibial nerves were evaluated, including their correla

Effect of Hand Held Vibrating Tools on Nerve Conduction Study in Dental Residents.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive exposure to vibration has been shown to induce peripheral nerve dysfunction. Dentists are exposed to handheld vibrating tools in their daily clinical practice. Most of the studies are done in dentists who have symptoms such as paresthesia and numbness of the hands. Thus, we conducted the study to explore the effect of vibration on nerve conduction variables in apparently healthy asymptomatic dental residents. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 22 dental residents and age matched 22 medical residents as controls. Nerve conduction study was performed in median a

Nerve conduction study of lower extremities in cutaneous arteritis patients with neurological manifestations.

Some patients originally diagnosed with cutaneous arteritis (CA) could develop additional disease manifestations, including peripheral neurological involvement. We evaluated the biological neurological parameters among CA patients who underwent nerve conduction studies for neurological involvement in the lower extremities. We reviewed 164 patients who were originally diagnosed with CA at our dermatology department between 2004 and 2015. Seventeen (10.4%) of the CA patients underwent further nerve conduction studies to determine their peripheral neurological manifestations, primarily in the low

[Phrenic nerve conduction disorder after open heart surgery--electrophysiological study].

In 32 consecutive adult patients undergoing heart surgery, the induced diaphragmatic muscle action potential was measured. Phrenic nerve conduction disorder was defined as disappearance of muscle action potential (Edi) and conduction time (CT). Phrenic nerve conduction disorder was observed in 10 patients (31%); 8 patients on the left side and 2 patients on both sides. In non-conduction disorder group (22 patients), Edi and CT were measured. Edi of the right side decreased significantly from preoperative value of 705 +/- 318 microV to 445 +/- 285 microV at 1-3 days after operation (stage I) an

The role of sensory nerve conduction study of the palmar cutaneous nerve in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome in patients with polyneuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Conventional methods in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in patients with polyneuropathy (PNP) are insufficient. AIMS: We suggest that the comparison of the conduction of the median nerve with that of the neighboring peripheral nerves may be more beneficial in the diagnosis of entrapment neuropathy. SETTING AND DESIGN: The median nerve sensory conduction in healthy volunteers, in cases of CTS, PNP cases without CTS and in cases of PNP in whom clinical findings point to CTS, were compared by palmar cutaneous nerve (PCN) sensory conduction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Comp

Ultrasound-assisted near nerve method in nerve conduction study for the diagnosis of tarsal tunnel syndrome. A case report.

OBJECTIVES: The sensitivity of nerve conduction studies (NCSs) of the medial and lateral plantar nerves for the diagnosis of tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) is not high enough. The near nerve method (NNM) is a recording technique for NCSs that allows the recording of large, clear potentials. The NNM was reported to improve the sensitivity of diagnoses of TTS. However, the NNM requires special skill using electrical motor threshold in positioning a needle electrode correctly. Thus, we performed the NNM with the aid of ultrasound imaging (ultrasound-assisted). The aim of this case report is to show
