Pediatric high-grade gliomas represent a heterogeneous group of tumors that accounts for 15%-20% of all pediatric central nervous system tumors. These neoplasms predominantly involve the supratentorial hemispheres or the pons, in which case the tumors are usually called diffuse brainstem gliomas. The diagnosis of supratentorial neoplasms is dependent on their histologic appearance. The maximum possible surgical resection is always attempted since the degree of surgical resection is the main prognostic factor for these patients. Older children (>3 years) with supratentorial neoplasms undergo a

The intermediate filament distribution pattern in cells and tissues of vertebrates reflects their differentiation or functional specialization state, their histogenesis, and their malignant transformation. In the case of cytokeratins, the characteristic epithelial intermediate filaments representing a complex group of about 30 polypeptides, extensive attention has been given to their expression in diverse epithelial and epithelioid cells. However, little is known about their distribution during fetal development and in neuroectodermal cells. This review specifically focuses on the data concern

BACKGROUND: Primary central nervous system non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL-CNS) is an enigmatic disease of uncertain origin. At the Massachusetts General Hospital, 104 patients with NHL-CNS were seen from 1958 through 1989. An impression of changes in the frequency of diagnosis, character of the tumors, and therapy for this disease prompted this study of the pathologic features, clinical data, and natural history of this tumor in these 104 patients.
METHODS: Histologic slides (neurosurgical specimens and autopsy tissues) were available for 99 patients. The tumors were classified by the Working Fo

This review summarizes the current understanding of the role of transient receptor potential melastatin-subfamily member 7 (TRPM7) channels in the pathophysiology of neoplastic diseases. The TRPM family represents the largest and most diverse group in the TRP superfamily. Its subtypes are expressed in virtually all human organs playing a central role in (patho)physiological events. The TRPM7 protein (along with TRPM2 and TRPM6) is unique in that it has kinase activity in addition to the channel function. Numerous studies demonstrate the role of TRPM7 chanzyme in tumorigenesis and in other tumo

Twenty seven B cell neoplasms were examined by high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) and immune thin layer chromatography (ITLC) to determine ganglioside expression. Patterns of expression in the cells were compared with conventional morphology, genotype, and glycoprotein immunophenotype. Patterns of ganglioside expression were found for each of the tumor types analyzed (5 acute lymphoblastic lymphomas (ALL), 5 Burkitt's Lymphomas (BL), 4 chronic lymphocytic leukemias (CLL), and 3 diffuse poorly differentiated lymphomas (DPDL), 7 diffuse histiocytic lymphomas (DHL), and 3 multiple

Myoepithelial tumours are a rare form of salivary gland neoplasm, and their occurrence in the central nervous system is exceedingly rare. The authors report the case of an 18-year-old Filipino man presenting with headache and weakness, and on imaging showing an extensive parasagittal tumour at the left posterior parietal area with extracalvarial extension. There was no systemic disease. The patient underwent surgery to excise the tumour, with histopathology showing findings consistent with myoepithelioma. There was no further treatment, given the benign histology of the lesion, but there was r

BACKGROUND: Non-meningothelial intracranial mesenchymal tumors are a heterogeneous group of central nervous system neoplasms endowed with great variability clinically and histologically. For this precise reason, significant difficulties exist in specifically cataloguing tumor entities with such distant characteristics and such uncertain clinical course.
CASE DESCRIPTION: In an attempt to increase the knowledge inherent in this type of central nervous system lesions we report a case of a rare and unusual myxoid mesenchymal tumor of difficult anatomopathological classification characterized by

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Epithelioid sarcomas are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that occur most often in the extremities of young adults. Despite isolated reports of epithelioid sarcomas arising in the head and neck region, these lesions have not been described previously, to our knowledge, in the central nervous system.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We present the case of an 18-year-old woman with a unique dural sarcoma that arose in the right frontotemporal region. As visualized on magnetic resonance imaging studies, the 4.5-cm tumor focally traversed the cranium to penetrate the galea, the temporal

Low-grade fibromyxoid tumors are very uncommon in children. A tumor of this type has never been reported in the posterior fossa to date. Such lesions may mimic more common lesions of the posterior fossa. Awareness of this entity and its subsequent behavior may guide better management and outcomes. We describe the case of a previously unreported low-grade angiomyxofibromatous tumor of the falx cerebelli in a 10-year-old female, whose presentation mimicked cystic lesions of the posterior fossa causing obstructive hydrocephalus. Microscopic examination revealed stellate cells set in myxoid and ed

The pericyte, a constitutive component of the central nervous system, is a poorly understood cell type that envelops the endothelial cell with the intended purpose of regulating vascular flow and endothelial cell permeability. Previous studies of pericyte function have been limited to a small number of disease processes such as ischemic stroke and Alzheimer's disease. Recently, publications have postulated a link between glioma stem cell differentiation and pericyte function. These studies suggest that there may be an important interaction of pericytes with tumor cells and other components of

Primary central nervous system atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors mostly occur during early childhood and are almost invariably fatal. These tumors show similar histological and radiological features to primitive neuroectodermal tumor, medulloblastoma and choroid plexus carcinoma, but present different biological behaviors. We present the case of an 18 year-old man who presented headache, vomiting and ataxia. CT-scan and MRI revealed a posterior fossa tumor. A gross total resection was performed. An intraoperative study showed papillary-like tumors with large cells and mitotic features. Histolo

Central nervous system (CNS) solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms recognized less than a decade ago. Approximately 60 cases of SFT have been reported in the central nervous system. We describe three atypical SFTs of the CNS, two intracranial and one within the spine. One intracranial SFT arose from the sella turcica and expanded into the suprasellar areas. It relapsed twice during the 3 years following partial resection, and the MiB 1 labeling index steadily increased without obvious malignant transformation. The second SFT arose from the confluence of the sinuses, wid

BACKGROUND: While child morbidity in Kazakhstan is studied, existing research often prioritizes mortality or infectious diseases over non-communicable conditions. This study fills this gap by examining socioeconomic, demographic, and healthcare factors linked to respiratory diseases, asthma, and nervous system disorders among children aged 0-14 years across Kazakhstan from 2010 to 2019 highlighting regional context.
METHODS: Panel data from 14 regions were analyzed using linear mixed models with autoregressive covariance to address regional and temporal heterogeneity. Log-transformed incidenc

Encephalocele is a cystic congenital malformation in which central nervous system structures herniate through a defect in the cranium. The coincidence of encephalocele and neoplasm is a very rare condition. The authors present the case of a 5-month-old girl who underwent surgery for encephalocele and whose postoperative histopathological assessment revealed evidence of a mature teratoma inside the lesion. The embryogenesis of such a lesion is discussed.

Atypical teratoid /rhabdoid tumor (AT/RT) of the central nervous system is a rare but highly aggressive neoplasm that usually affects young children and infants and follows a rapidly fatal course. We report a case of AT/RT in a 3-month-old male infant who also had coincidental unilateral congenital cataract even though there was no associated congenital infectious disease.

Von Hippel-Lindau disease (vHL) is a hereditary, autosomal dominant syndrome manifested by a predisposition to the occurrence of benign and malignant neoplasms. The spectrum of vHL-related neoplasms includes: pheochromocytoma (PHEO), central nervous system and retinal hemangioblastomas, renal clear cell carcinoma, epididymal cystadenomas, and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, as well as visceral, especially renal and pancreatic, cysts. We report a single family including five patients with genetically confirmed vHL in which every member had PHEO diagnosed during pediatric care. The presented f

BACKGROUND: Primary melanocytic neoplasms (PMNs) are rare neoplasms, especially within the central nervous system. Meningeal melanocytomas, a subtype of PMN, are even rarer. Nevus of Ota results from the incomplete migration of melanocytes from the neural crest. Synchronous nevus of Ota and meningeal melanocytoma are infrequently encountered in clinical practice.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and elucidate 12 cases of synchronous meningeal melanocytoma and nevus of Ota, thereby improving the understanding of the relationship between these 2 diseases.
METHODS: We reviewed cases and searched the Engl

BACKGROUND: Multiple chondromatous hamartomas of the lung, which are very rare, are a feature of Carney syndrome. The relation between the two entities is not clear.
METHODS: A patient with multiple chondromatous hamartomas of the lung is described in this article. The literature was reviewed with special reference to the relation between multiple chondromatous hamartomas of the lung and Carney syndrome as well as the triad of gastric epithelioid leiomyosarcoma, functioning extra-adrenal paraganglioma, and pulmonary chondroma.
RESULTS: A total of 15 cases of multiple chondromatous hamartomas

Angiography is important in the diagnosis of central nervous system disorders. In operable lesions it not only discloses the location of the lesion but also gives valuable information regarding its character and surrounding vascular architecture. The technique of both the pericutaneous and the open methods is described. The advantages of the controlled automatic arteriograph are described as well as pertinent information regarding cerebral circulation time. The choice of contrast media and the advantages and disadvantages of each are described. The three phases of angiography important in diag
