Psychological mechanisms of English academic stress and academic burnout: the mediating role of rumination and moderating effect of neuroticism.

INTRODUCTION: Academic stress is a significant and prevalent phenomenon among college students. According to the Demands-Resources Model, when individuals are unable to cope with stress that exceeds their capacity, burnout may occur. Although English courses hold a significant position in university education, there has been limited research on the mechanisms linking English academic stress to English academic burnout. METHODS: This study recruited 1,130 undergraduate students taking English courses. Participants completed online questionnaires assessing English academic stress, rumination, E

Patterns of stressful life events and polygenic scores for five mental disorders and neuroticism among adults with depression.

The dominant ('general') version of the diathesis-stress theory of depression views stressors and genetic vulnerability as independent risks. In the Australian Genetics of Depression Study (N = 14,146; 75% female), we tested whether polygenic scores (PGS) for major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety, ADHD, and neuroticism were associated with reported exposure to 32 childhood, past-year, lifetime, and accumulated stressful life events (SLEs). In false discovery rate-corrected models, the clearest PGS-SLE relationships were for the ADHD- and depression-PGSs, and to a lesser ex

The Moderation Role of Neuroticism for Anxiety among Burdened Dementia Caregivers: A Study on Care Giver-Recipient Dyads.

Caregiving burden proves to be a risk factor of anxiety disorders and anxiety affection. The current study investigates how an endogenous personality dimension - neuroticism - moderates the association between caregiving burden and anxiety affection. Between 2015 and 2017, the study deployed a cross-sectional survey of 674 (response rate = 89%) older adults who were hospitalized for dementia at two hospitals. From all primary caregivers of these patients, 661 agreed to participate in the survey which yielded 661 matched dyads as the final sample. Caregiving burden, neuroticism, and anxiety aff

Rumination and worrying as possible mediators in the relation between neuroticism and symptoms of depression and anxiety in clinically depressed individuals.

Rumination and worrying are considered possible mediating variables that may explain the relation between neuroticism and symptoms of depression and anxiety. The current study sought to examine the mediational effects of rumination and worry in the relationships between neuroticism and symptoms of depression and anxiety in a sample of clinically depressed individuals (N=198). All patients completed a battery of questionnaires including measures of neuroticism, rumination, worrying, depression, and anxiety. Results showed that in subsequent analyses, rumination and worrying both mediated the re

Low extraversion and high neuroticism as indices of genetic and environmental risk for social phobia, agoraphobia, and animal phobia.

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined the extent to which two major personality dimensions (extraversion and neuroticism) index the genetic and environmental risk for three phobias (social phobia, agoraphobia, and animal phobia) in twins ascertained from a large, population-based registry. METHOD: Lifetime phobias and personality traits were assessed through diagnostic interview and self-report questionnaire, respectively, in 7,800 twins from female-female, male-male, and opposite-sex pairs. Sex-limited trivariate Cholesky structural equation models were used to decompose the correlations among ext

Personality pattern of patients with chronic gastric ulcer. Study of neuroticism and extroversion in a gastric ulcer and a control population.

Forty-four patients with chronic gastric ulcer were compared with a control group matched for age, sex, and place of residence. The personality pattern was studied by the Eysenck Personality Inventory and personality assessed in terms of neuroticism and extroversion. The relevance of social class was also studied. The gastric ulcer population did not differ from the control group except among the male population, in which the gastric ulcer population was significantly more neurotic and less extroverted than their controls.

Hurt Others or Hurt Self? Reciprocal Relations Among Neuroticism and Bullying Perpetration/Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Over Time.

School bullying perpetration and non-suicidal self-injury are two major public health challenges in adolescence. The interplay between these behaviors and neuroticism, as well as the underlying mechanisms, has received increasing attention. However, the complex interplay among neuroticism, bullying perpetration and NSSI remains underexplored. Based on this, the present study followed Chinese adolescents (N = 1214; Mage = 15.46, SDage = 0.71; 39.30% girls) across three time points with 6-month intervals. Employing both traditional and random-intercept s, this study sought to elucidate the simil

Internet-Delivered Affect Phobia Therapy for Neuroticism: Results from an Uncontrolled Pilot Study with 6-Month Follow-Up.

Objective: Trait neuroticism both correlates with and predicts mental and physical health outcomes and has been characterized as a transdiagnostic risk factor for mental health problems. No previous studies have investigated if internet-delivered psychodynamic therapy (IPDT) can reduce levels of neuroticism. The aim of the present study was to investigate the preliminary effect of affect-focused IPDT on trait neuroticism in a sample with mixed anxiety and depressive symptoms. Methods: In total, 30 participants were included and assigned to 10 weeks of therapist-supported IPDT. Self-reported le

Neuroticism polygenic risk predicts conversion from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease by impairing inferior parietal surface area.

The high prevalence of conversion from amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) to Alzheimer's disease (AD) makes early prevention of AD extremely critical. Neuroticism, a heritable personality trait associated with mental health, has been considered a risk factor for conversion from aMCI to AD. However, whether the neuroticism genetic risk could predict the conversion of aMCI and its underlying neural mechanisms is unclear. Neuroticism polygenic risk score (N-PRS) was calculated in 278 aMCI patients with qualified genomic and neuroimaging data from ADNI. After 1-year follow-up, N-PRS in pati

Borderline personality disorder and the big five: molecular genetic analyses indicate shared genetic architecture with neuroticism and openness.

Both environmental (e.g. interpersonal traumatization during childhood and adolescence) and genetic factors may contribute to the development of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Twin studies assessing borderline personality symptoms/features in the general population indicate that genetic factors underlying these symptoms/features are shared in part with the personality traits of the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality-the "Big Five". In the present study, the genetic overlap of BPD with the Big Five -Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neurotic

Smaller amygdala volume and increased neuroticism predict anxiety symptoms in healthy subjects: A volumetric approach using manual tracing.

Volume reductions in the amygdala (AMY) have been found in patients with anxiety disorders, but findings are mixed in subclinical participants with high trait anxiety scores, in whom both reductions and increases in AMY volume have been identified. One potential reason for such discrepancies could be the employment of different methods to determine the AMY volume (i.e., manual tracing in psychiatric research vs. automated methods), in non-patient research. In addition to trait anxiety, smaller AMY volume has also been linked to neuroticism, a personality trait consistently linked to increased

Exploring pathways between childhood parental abuse and adulthood generalized anxiety disorder: The roles of neuroticism, extraversion, and conscientiousness.

BACKGROUND: Childhood parental abuse is an established risk factor for adulthood generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), but the personality mechanisms explaining this pathway are underinvestigated. Based on developmental psychopathology and triple vulnerability models, this study evaluated whether neuroticism, extraversion, and conscientiousness mediated the 18-year prospective paths from maternal and paternal abuse to adulthood GAD severity. Each abuse source was tested independently. METHOD: Community adults (N = 3293) (M age = 45.61 years, standard deviation [SD] = 11.41, range = 20-86; 54.95

Exploring the Relationship between Neuroticism and Perinatal Depressive Symptoms: Findings from a 2-Year, Multicenter Study in Italy.

Neuroticism is a personality trait associated with the risk of affective disorders and perinatal depression. We investigated the relationship between different levels of neuroticism, psychological characteristics, and depressive symptoms in a sample of pregnant women (N = 2631) who accessed the gynecology departments in the Puglia Region (Italy) from July 2020 to November 2022. Women were assessed for depressive symptoms and associated risk factors in their third trimester of pregnancy (T0) and after childbirth (T1), and followed-up at 6 months and 1 year after delivery if presenting signs of

Higher trait neuroticism is associated with greater fatty acid amide hydrolase binding in borderline and antisocial personality disorders.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) are the two most frequently diagnosed and researched DSM-5 personality disorders, and both are characterized by high levels of trait neuroticism. Fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), an enzyme of the endocannabinoid system (ECS), has been linked to regulation of mood through modulation of anandamide, an endocannabinoid. We hypothesized that prefrontal cortex (PFC) FAAH binding would relate to trait neuroticism in personality disorders. Thirty-one individuals with personality disorders (20 with BPD and 11 with ASPD)

Functional magnetic resonance imaging data for the association between polygenic risk scores for neuroticism and reward-punishment processing.

Neuroticism as a personality trait represents a heritable risk for psychiatric disorders. The polygenic risk score for neuroticism (N-PRS) is used to study genetic vulnerability to neuroticism. The current data present the association of the genetic risk for neuroticism to neural reward-punishment processing using functional magnetic resonance imaging. N-PRS was computed based on the individual's genotype information and a genome-wide association study on the UK Biobank data. While individuals performed a monetary incentive delay task, their neural activations for upcoming incentives (reward:

Association of 1-year change in neuroticism and 3-year change in cognitive performance among older depressed adults.

OBJECTIVES: The relationships among depression, personality factors, and cognitive decline in the elderly are complex. Depressed elders score higher in neuroticism than nondepressed older individuals. Presence of neuroticism worsens cognitive decline in depressed older adults. Yet little is known about changes in neuroticism among older adults being treated for depression and the impact of these changes on cognitive decline. DESIGN: Longitudinal observational study. SETTING: Academic Health Center. PARTICIPANTS: We examined 68 participants in the neurobiology of late-life depression (LLD) s

Meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies for neuroticism in 449,484 individuals identifies novel genetic loci and pathways.

Neuroticism is an important risk factor for psychiatric traits, including depression1, anxiety2,3, and schizophrenia4-6. At the time of analysis, previous genome-wide association studies7-12 (GWAS) reported 16 genomic loci associated to neuroticism10-12. Here we conducted a large GWAS meta-analysis (n = 449,484) of neuroticism and identified 136 independent genome-wide significant loci (124 new at the time of analysis), which implicate 599 genes. Functional follow-up analyses showed enrichment in several brain regions and involvement of specific cell types, including dopaminergic neuroblasts (

Pleiotropy between neuroticism and physical and mental health: findings from 108 038 men and women in UK Biobank.

People with higher levels of neuroticism have an increased risk of several types of mental disorder. Higher neuroticism has also been associated, less consistently, with increased risk of various physical health outcomes. We hypothesised that these associations may, in part, be due to shared genetic influences. We tested for pleiotropy between neuroticism and 17 mental and physical diseases or health traits using linkage disequilibrium regression and polygenic profile scoring. Genetic correlations were derived between neuroticism scores in 108 038 people in the UK Biobank and health-related me

Do extraversion and neuroticism moderate the association between bullying victimization and internalizing symptoms? A three-wave longitudinal study.

The current study examined the moderating roles of neuroticism and extraversion in victims of bullying. According to a stress-diathesis model, we hypothesized that adolescents with high levels of neuroticism and low levels of extraversion would react to victimization with increased symptoms of depression and social anxiety. A sample of 1440 adolescents (648 girls and 792 boys; ages between 13- and 17-years-old) completed measures of extraversion and neuroticism at time 1, as well as measures of bullying victimization, depressive symptoms and social anxiety symptoms at time 1, time 2, and time
