Effects of toxicants on nitrifying biomass in flocs vs. carriers.

Effects of chemical toxicants on nitrifying bacteria in flocs and porous carriers were compared. Mean inhibitory concentrations (IC50s) of toxicants were invariably higher in carrier suspensions than floc suspensions. The greatest differences were seen with cyanide, nickel and copper, whereas small differences were observed for the organic toxicants Methomyl and thiourea. Decreasing the size of the carriers lessened their protective effect. The results suggest that carriers would be advantageous for nitrification systems subjected to short-term inputs of heavy metals or cyanide but not helpful

Chloroquine degradation under Fenton-assisted electron beam irradiation in aqueous solution.

The removal of pharmaceuticals in the wastewater has been a tough problem. Herein, the Fenton-assisted electron beam radiation was employed to remove chloroquine (CQ) in aqueous solution. The results showed that electron beam removed 63% CQ at 1.5 kGy with •OH, eaq⁻, and H• contributing to its degradation. Additionally, the presence of CO32-, HCO3-, NO3-, Fe2+, and humic acid decreased the degradation efficiency. Furthermore, the presence of S2O82- improved efficiency due to the generation of SO4•⁻ in addition to •OH. The solely Fenton process removed 57% CQ with 2 mM H2O2 and 0.4 mM Fe(II) af

Denitrification as a nitrogen removal mechanism in a Vermont peatland.

Atmospheric deposition of nitrogenous compounds to ombrotrophic peatlands (i.e., those that have peat layers higher than their surroundings and receive nutrients and minerals exclusively by precipitation) has the potential to significantly alter ecosystem functioning. This study utilized the acetylene inhibition technique to estimate the relative importance of denitrification in nitrogen removal from a primarily ombrotrophic peatland, in an attempt to estimate the threat of increased nitrogen loadings to these areas. Estimates of mean rates of denitrification ranged from -2.76 to 84.0 ng N(2)O

Biodegradation of free cyanide and subsequent utilisation of biodegradation by-products by Bacillus consortia: optimisation using response surface methodology.

A mesophilic alkali-tolerant bacterial consortium belonging to the Bacillus genus was evaluated for its ability to biodegrade high free cyanide (CN(-)) concentration (up to 500 mg CN(-)/L), subsequent to the oxidation of the formed ammonium and nitrates in a continuous bioreactor system solely supplemented with whey waste. Furthermore, an optimisation study for successful cyanide biodegradation by this consortium was evaluated in batch bioreactors (BBs) using response surface methodology (RSM). The input variables, that is, pH, temperature and whey-waste concentration, were optimised using a n

Emergent macrophytes specifically regulate ammonia-oxidizing microbial communities and functions: comammox dominance and N2O emission effects.

AIMS: Emergent macrophytes regulate nitrogen-cycling microbial processes in lake riparian zones, though the mechanisms underlying these species-specific effects remain to be fully elucidated. This study investigated the structure, functional activity, and environmental drivers of three ammonia-oxidizing microbial communities in sediments with different emergent macrophytes (Phragmites australis, Typha orientalis, and Thalia dealbata) in Meixi Lake, Changsha. METHODS AND RESULTS: Metagenomic sequencing, quantitative PCR (qPCR), potential nitrification rate, and N2O yield were integrated to rev

Novel insight into ammonium, phosphate, and iron(II) dynamics in the sediment porewater of a constructed wetland under artificial aeration through the diffusive equilibrium in thin films technique.

The analysis of porewater concentrations in constructed wetland sediments could help to understand biogeochemical processes, the sources and sinks of nutrients, and their effect on overlying water quality. In this study, we measured high-resolution porewater concentration profiles of ammonium (NH4+-N), nitrate (NO3N), phosphate (PO43--P), and ferrous iron (Fe(II)) in-situ in the Laratinga constructed wetland in Mount Barker (South Australia) using diffusive equilibration in thin films (DET) techniques. Measurements were taken under light and dark conditions, and non-aerated and aerated conditi

Elimination of phenols, ammonia and cyanide in wash water from biomass gasification, and nitrogen recycling using planted trickling filters.

Trickling filters were used to treat wash water from a wood gasifier. This wash water contained toxic substances such as ammonium, cyanide, phenols, and PAH. The goal was to develop a system that degraded toxic substances, and achieved full nitrification of ammonia. A 1 kW model wood gasifier plant delivered wash water for the experiments, which was standardised to a conductivity of 3 mS/cm by dilution. Toxicity was assessed by bacterial luminescence detection, germination test with cress (Lepidium sativum), and pot plants cultivated in a hydroponic setup irrigated continuously with the wastew

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi- linked microbial processes in soil nitrogen cycling.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) create an extended plant-soil interface (referred to as mycorrhizal hyphosphere) where specific microbial interactions shape key steps of the nitrogen (N) cycle. Extraradical hyphae of the AMF host diverse microbes that help mineralize organic substrates, regulate ammonium and nitrate transformations, and enhance N retention. These processes allow plants to access both inorganic N and the N released from complex organic compounds. This review synthesizes current evidence for AMF-microbe interactions in relation to mineralization, nitrification, denitrificatio

Quantifying, predicting, and mitigating nitrous oxide emissions in a full-scale partial nitritation/anammox reactor treating reject water.

In this paper, a set of mathematical tools are developed and assembled to quantify, predict and virtually assess N2O emission mitigation strategies in partial nitritation (PN) / anammox (ANX) granular based reactors. The proposed approach is constructed upon a set of data pre-treatment methods, process simulation models, control tools (and algorithms) and key performance indicators to analyze, reproduce, and forecast the behavior of multiple operational variables within aerobic granular sludge systems. All these elements are tested on two full-scale data sets (#D1, #D2) collected over a period

Fostering nature-based solutions and circular approaches in biogas purification: validation of digestate centrate nitrified by intensified multi-stage constructed wetlands as electron acceptor in anoxic biodesulphurisation.

Anoxic biodesulphurisation using a biogenic nitrified source as an electron acceptor is a potential alternative to aerobic H2S biotreatment. This work reports the successful combination of nitrified centrate obtained from innovative constructed wetlands (CWs) with anoxic suspended biomass bioreactors (SBBs) treating real biogas. The quality of the liquid medium on the biodesulphurisation process was evaluated. The SBBs (of 48 L and 130 L, respectively) shifted seamlessly from using nitrified centrate from activated sludge to nitrified centrate from CWs, but its low orthophosphate content did l

Enhanced performance and microbial interactions of shallow wetland bed coupling with functional biocathode microbial electrochemical system (MES).

It is essential to remediate the polluted urban river, which endangers the aquatic creatures and affected human body's senses. The treatment wetland combined with microbial electrochemical system (MES) used for the remediation is becoming a new research focus due to its ideal pollutants removal efficiency and small footprint. Here this paper provided a kind of novel shallow wetland bed coupling with close-circuit microbial electrochemical system (WB-CMES) to remove pollutants in surface water. In contrast to the shallow wetland bed coupling with open-circuit MES (WB-OMES) and the shallow wetla

Comammox biogeography subject to anthropogenic interferences along a high-altitude river.

The recent discovery of comammox Nitrospira performing complete ammonia oxidation to nitrate has overturned the long-held dogma of two-step nitrification on Earth, yet little is known about the effect of urbanization interference on their distribution. Using gene-centric metagenomics, we provided the first blueprints about comammox community, biogeography, and environmental drivers along a high-elevation (> 2000 m) river flowing through the largest city on the vulnerable Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Our study confirmed a wide presence and diversity of yet-uncultured comammox clade B across wet and

Interrelationships between tetracyclines and nitrogen cycling processes mediated by microorganisms: A review.

Due to their broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and low cost, tetracyclines (TCs) are a class of antibiotics widely used for human and veterinary medical purposes and as a growth-promoting agent for aquaculture. Interrelationships between TCs and nitrogen cycling have attracted scientific attention due to the complicated processes mediated by microorganisms. TCs negatively impact the nitrogen cycling; however, simultaneous degradation of TCs during nitrogen cycling mediated by microorganisms can be achieved. This review encapsulates the background and distribution of TCs in the environment.

Development of a novel anoxic/oxic fed-batch membrane bioreactor (AFMBR) based on gravity-driven and partial aeration modes: A pilot scale study.

A novel pilot gravity-driven anoxic/oxic fed-batch membrane bioreactor (AFMBR) was developed to treat real domestic wastewater. In this process, the anoxic and oxic stages created favorable conditions for stable and continuous nitritation-denitritation/denitrification-nitrification links without adding external carbon source. Excellent removals of organic carbon/nitrogen (NH4+-N: 71-97%, COD: 78-96%, UV254: 70-95%, TN: 20-60%) and spontaneous permeability recovery were achieved simultaneously. It was assessed at micro levels by characterizing sludge particle morphologies, microbiota functional

Impacts of Cu(II) on the kinetics of nitrogen removal during the wastewater treatment process.

The effects of Cu(II) on the substrate removal kinetics, including the COD, NH₄⁺-N, and NO(x)⁻-N removal, were investigated by batch assays. Results showed that Cu(II) loading concentration of 10 mg/L significantly inhibited both the organic substrate removal efficiency and its specific removal rate, and the inhibitory rate was higher in the nitrification process than in the denitrification process. The removal efficiency and the specific uptake rate of NH₄⁺-N would be significantly inhibited by the Cu(II) loading concentration of 10 mg/L. As for the denitrificantion process, the feeding conce

Long-term monitoring of a full-scale parallel-unit downflow hanging sponge system with adaptive capacity for fluctuating wastewater flows in Japan.

This study presents a 30-month full-scale evaluation of a parallel-unit downflow hanging sponge (DHS) system with adaptive downsizing capability at the Susaki Sewage Treatment Plant, Japan. The DHS reactor comprised ten identical units operated in parallel, allowing capacity adjustment by varying the number of active units. The system (primary sedimentation tank → DHS → moving bed biological filter) was monitored under normal, low-temperature (winter), partial downsizing, and sponge sheet installation (upper part of the sponge media-filled segment) conditions. Temporal dynamics of N2O emissions from pasture urine patches: drivers and source processes.

Nitrous oxide fluxes from urine patches (F(N2O)urine) of grazing livestock are variable over time due to fluctuations in driving parameters, such as soil temperature, water-filled pore space (WFPS), and availability of the source substrates ammonium and nitrate. Therefore, the frequency and timing of flux measurements after urine application are important when determining cumulative F(N2O)urine. In this study, F(N2O)urine was measured in eight experiments at high temporal frequency using an automatic chamber system in a pasture located in Switzerland. A driver analysis using random forest iden

Characterization and removal mechanism of a novel enrofloxacin-degrading microorganism, Microbacterium proteolyticum GJEE142 capable of simultaneous removal of enrofloxacin, nitrogen and phosphorus.

In the study, a novel ENR-degrading microorganism, Microbacterium proteolyticum GJEE142 was isolated from aquaculture wastewater for the first time. The ENR removal of strain GJEE142 was reliant upon the provision of limited additional carbon source, and was adaptative to low temperature (13 ℃) and high salinity (50‰). The ENR removal process, to which intracellular enzymes made more contributions, was implemented in three proposed pathways. During the removal process, oxidative stress response of strain GJEE142 was activated and the bacterial toxicity of ENR was decreased. Strain GJEE142 coul

Enhancement of nutrient removal in an activated sludge process using aerobic granular sludge augmentation strategy with ammonium-based aeration control.

To enhance nutrient removal from low-strength municipal wastewater in a continuous-flow activated sludge (CFAS) process using aerobic granular sludge (AGS) augmentation strategy, a pilot-scale demonstration was configured with a mainstream reactor (anaerobic/aerobic process) and a sidestream sequencing batch reactor for AGS production. The aeration of the mainstream reactor was controlled based on dissolved oxygen (DO) and ammonium concentrations during Phases I and II-III, respectively. During Phase III, an anoxic zone was created in the mainstream aerobic tank. Throughout the demonstration p
