Observed declines in leaf nitrogen explained by photosynthetic acclimation to CO2.

Widespread evidence of decreasing leaf nutrients has raised concerns about ecosystem productivity under global change. Interpreting trends in leaf nutrients has important implications for the fate of ecosystem services, particularly the role of forests in mitigating climate change and sustaining quality food sources. Here, we challenge the common interpretation that decreasing leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC) is evidence of increasing nutrient limitations on ecosystem primary productivity. Instead, we show that declines in LNC (4% decrease per 50 ppm CO2 increase), observed across 409 Europea

Physiology and diversity of ammonia-oxidizing archaea.

The discovery of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), now generally recognized to exert primary control over ammonia oxidation in terrestrial, marine, and geothermal habitats, necessitates a reassessment of the nitrogen cycle. In particular, the unusually high affinity of marine and terrestrial AOA for ammonia indicates that this group may determine the oxidation state of nitrogen available to associated micro- and macrobiota, altering our current understanding of trophic interactions. Initial comparative genomics and physiological studies have revealed a novel, and as yet unresolved, primarily co

Feammox in wastewater treatment: Mechanisms, synergistic interactions and future engineering applications.

Ferric ammonium oxidation (Feammox) has been found to play a non-negligible role in nitrogen loss in nature and artificial reactors, demonstrating a potential alternative pathway for nitrogen removal. Through the comparative analysis among Feammox, nitrification-denitrification, and anaerobic ammonium oxidation, this review systematically elucidates the mechanism, nitrogen removal efficiency, influencing factors of Feammox and its synergistic interactions with traditional other biological nitrogen removal pathways. Besides, the contribution of Feammox to nitrogen loss in natural environments,

Acylated homoserine lactones regulate the response of methane metabolism and nitrogen metabolism to florfenicol in anaerobic fermentation.

Antimicrobial agents enter the ecological environment through animal excreta and disrupt metabolism in environmental microorganisms. Quorum sensing (QS) can help bacteria adapt to their surroundings. To explore how acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) can adjust the influence of florfenicol on nitrogen cycling and methane metabolism in anaerobic fermentation, a small indoor thermostatic anaerobic fermentation model was established by adding exogenous acylated homoserine lactone (AHL) signal molecules with florfenicol as the stress factor. Through bacterial function prediction by PICRUST, we found tha

Floodplain nitrifiers harbor the genetic potential for utilizing a wide range of organic nitrogen compounds.

UNLABELLED: Organic compounds such as urea and cyanate can serve as nitrogen (N) sources for nitrifying microorganisms, including ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB), complete ammonia-oxidizing (comammox) bacteria, and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). Here we investigated metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) for all four nitrifier guilds generated from hydrologically variable floodplain sediments of the Wind River Basin (WRB; Riverton, WY, USA) for their genetic potential to utilize organic N compounds. A vast majority of WRB nitrifier MAGs harbored urease (ure) and at least one

Graphitic Nitrogen-Regulated Direct I2/I- Conversion to Achieve Fast Kinetics and Stability for Zn-I2 Batteries.

Iodine (I2) cathodes for aqueous Zn-I2 batteries suffer from sluggish redox kinetics and severe polyiodide shuttling, resulting in poor utilization and cycling stability. Herein, graphitic nitrogen-enriched carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) with a core-shell structure are integrated with a self-supporting porous carbon framework to construct a graphitic nitrogen-regulated porous carbon host. The porous framework provides abundant space for iodine accommodation and accessible pathways for mass transport, while CPDs introduce graphitic-N sites that strengthen iodine-host interactions and facilitate

Elevated ozone reprograms secondary metabolism in Abelmoschus moschatus pods, enhancing antidiabetic and antiobesity bioactivities.

Critical insight: Elevated ozone (EO3) induced selective upregulation of TCA cycle, phenylpropanoid?flavonoid pathways and downregulation of lignans and specific lipids. This coordinated carbon?nitrogen reallocation enhances quercetin-based ROS scavenging and respiratory energy supply, strengthening ozone stress tolerance. This study examines metabolic changes in A. moschatus pods under elevated ozone (EO3) stress by using open-top chambers (OTC). The metabolomic analysis revealed the carbon and nitrogen distribution, with reduced glycolysis and TCA cycle activity, while the pentose phosphate

Prolonged Stagnation Reduces Treated Wastewater Biostability by Altering Microbial Community: Insights From Metaproteomics.

Reclaimed wastewater is increasingly reused for irrigation and other non-potable applications; however, inadequately treated effluent has raised concerns regarding environmental and public health impacts. Water quality in reclaimed distribution systems is shaped by multiple factors, particularly hydraulic stagnation in pipes and storage reservoirs. Stagnation can alter microbial community stability and facilitate persistence of pathogenic taxa. To investigate how prolonged stagnation affects microbial community structure and function, we integrated metagenomics and metaproteomics analyses of b

Upgrading of nitrate to hydrazine through cascading electrocatalytic ammonia production with controllable N-N coupling.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) play important roles in the nitrogen cycle system and serve as renewable nitrogen sources for the synthesis of value-added chemicals driven by clean electricity. However, it is challenging to achieve selective conversion of NOx to multi-nitrogen products (e.g., N2H4) via precise construction of a single N-N bond. Herein, we propose a strategy for NOx-to-N2H4 under ambient conditions, involving electrochemical NOx upgrading to NH3, followed by ketone-mediated NH3 to N2H4. It can achieve an impressive overall NOx-to-N2H4 selectivity of 88.7%. We elucidate mechanistic insigh

Research advances in the mechanisms of nitrogen-phosphorus synergy mediated by root exudates and mycorrhizal networks in cereal-legume intercropping systems.

The cereal-legume intercropping system achieves efficient utilization of nitrogen and phosphorus through interactions between roots and soil organisms, making it a key practice in sustainable agriculture. We systematically summarized the nitrogen and phosphorus mutual promotion mechanism mediated by root exudates and mycorrhizal networks in the cereal-legume intercropping system, and proposed future research directions. Cereal plants mobilize phosphorus in rhizosphere by secreting organic acids and phosphatases. The released phosphorus is then transferred to the rhizosphere of legumes via the

Removal of nutrients in various types of constructed wetlands.

The processes that affect removal and retention of nitrogen during wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs) are manifold and include NH(3) volatilization, nitrification, denitrification, nitrogen fixation, plant and microbial uptake, mineralization (ammonification), nitrate reduction to ammonium (nitrate-ammonification), anaerobic ammonia oxidation (ANAMMOX), fragmentation, sorption, desorption, burial, and leaching. However, only few processes ultimately remove total nitrogen from the wastewater while most processes just convert nitrogen to its various forms. Removal of total nitrog

Cross-Feeding of Carbon and Nitrogen Between Aquificales and Thermus in Hot Springs.

Acquisition and cycling of carbon and nitrogen among members of hot spring communities are not well understood. Metagenomic analyses of 105 communities inhabiting high temperature hot springs across Yellowstone and Iceland showed a co-distribution pattern of putatively autotrophic and/or diazotrophic (nitrogen-fixing) Aquificales and Thermus populations. Targeted enrichment of autotrophic and diazotrophic populations in an Icelandic hot spring produced a co-culture of Pampinifervens (Aquificales) that encoded carbon dioxide and nitrogen fixation pathways and Thermus (Thermales). Arsenic Mobilization and Transformation by Ammonium-Generating Bacteria Isolated from High Arsenic Groundwater in Hetao Plain, China.

Arsenic (As) mobilization in groundwater involves biogeochemical cycles of carbon, iron, and sulfur. However, few studies have focused on the role of nitrogen-metabolizing bacteria in As mobilization, as well as in the transformation between inorganic and organic As in groundwater. In this study, the nitrogen and As metabolisms of Citrobacter sp. G-C1 and Paraclostridium sp. G-11, isolated from high As groundwater in Hetao Plain, China, were characterized by culture experiments and genome sequencing. The results showed Citrobacter sp. G-C1 was a dissimilatory nitrate-reducing bacterium. The di

Nitrogen Mediates Amino Acid Metabolism Affecting Stachydrine Synthesis in Leonurus japonicus.

Leonurus japonicus is a vital herb known for its blood-activating and menstruation-regulating properties, with stachydrine being a crucial secondary metabolite contributing to these effects. Enhancing the accumulation of active ingredients is a key concern in cultivation. This study utilized a hydroponic experiment with varying inorganic nitrogen (N) concentrations (supplied as Ca(NO3)2·4H2O and KNO3) as nutrient substrates, demonstrating that exogenous nitrogen input significantly increased biomass and promoted stachyridine synthesis in L. japonicus over an extended incubation period. Mechanistic insights and rational catalyst design in NOx electroreduction.

The electrocatalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx), particularly nitrate (NO3-), nitrite (NO2-) and nitrogen oxide (NO), to ammonia (NH3) represents a sustainable strategy for nitrogen cycle management and pollution mitigation. However, optimizing the efficiency and selectivity for NH3 production remains challenging because of competing side reactions, complex reaction networks, and the need for precise control over intermediate species. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent theoretical advancements in the NOx electroreduction reaction (NOxRR), emphasizing mechanistic in

The influent COD/N ratio controlled the linear alkylbenzene sulfonate biodegradation and extracellular polymeric substances accumulation in an oxygen-based membrane biofilm reactor.

This work evaluated the fates of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), and total nitrogen (TN) when treating greywater (GW) in an oxygen-based membrane biofilm reactor (O2-MBfR). An influent ratio of chemical oxygen demand to total nitrogen (COD/TN) of 20 g COD/g N gave the best removals of LAS, COD, NH4+-N and TN, and it also had the greatest EPS accumulation in the biofilm. Higher EPS and improved performance were linked to increases in the relative abundances of bacteria able to biodegrade LAS (Zoogloea, Pseudomonas, Parvibaculum, Magn

Rhizosphere priming of soil organic matter in response to multiple global change factors.

The rhizosphere priming effect (RPE), referring to the effects of living plant roots on soil organic matter decomposition, plays an important role in terrestrial carbon and nutrient cycling. However, how global changes may affect RPE remains unclear. By conducting a global meta-analysis of 220 observations from 39 plant species planted in 49 mineral and organic soils, we quantified the effects of multiple global change factors on RPE and explored the regulations of plant, edaphic, and experimental factors on RPE responses. We found that, overall, nitrogen addition, phosphorus addition, elevate

Microbial niche partitioning explains N2O distributions and cycling in marine oxygen minimum zones.

Oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) are marine hotspots for cycling and emission of the powerful greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). Steep redox gradients host diverse microbial communities that produce and consume N2O, generating a characteristic vertical distribution, with low concentrations in anoxic cores and supersaturated accumulation in surrounding oxyclines. Although the accumulation is commonly attributed to stronger O2 inhibition of N2O consumption than production, this differential inhibition is not consistently observed, suggesting that interactions among nitrogen-cycling metabolisms may p

Nitrogen Addition Regulates the Temperature Sensitivity of Soil Carbon Release via Microbial Properties.

The temperature sensitivity (Q10) of soil carbon (C) release is a key parameter for evaluating soil C stability under climate warming, with particular importance in high-latitude regions that are highly vulnerable to rising temperatures. Nevertheless, the mechanisms by which nitrogen (N) addition modulates the temperature sensitivity of soil C release remain insufficiently understood. Here, we collected soils from a long-term N addition experiment in a high-latitude boreal forest and conducted controlled incubations to assess how N addition influences soil CO2 release and its temperature sensi
