May smokers and overweight patients be treated with a medial open-wedge HTO? Risk factors for non-union.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the rate of non-union after medial open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO) with the Tomofix(®) plate. In addition, risk factors with a possible influence on the development of a non-union were analysed. METHODS: Between 2006 and 2008, a total of 186 medial open-wedge HTOs were performed in 182 patients. RESULTS: Ten cases of non-union (5.4%) were recorded. Risk factors with a statistically significant influence on the development of a non-union included smoking, body mass index and fracture of the lateral cortical hinge. No i

Both exhaled nitric oxide and blood eosinophil count were associated with mild allergic asthma only in non-smokers.

BACKGROUND: The fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) and the blood eosinophil count (B-eos) are markers of eosinophilic inflammation used in the diagnosis and management of asthma. The relationships between smoking cigarette and both FENO and B-eos are complex and raise questions about the association between these markers and asthma in smokers. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationships between both FENO and B-eos on one hand and asthma and atopy on the other, according to smoking status. METHODS: FENO and B-eos were measured in, respectively, 1579 and 1496 of the 1607 middle-aged adults r

Prefrontal and limbic resting state brain network functional connectivity differs between nicotine-dependent smokers and non-smoking controls.

BACKGROUND: Brain dysfunction in prefrontal cortex (PFC) and dorsal striatum (DS) contributes to habitual drug use. These regions are constituents of brain networks thought to be involved in drug addiction. To investigate whether networks containing these regions differ between nicotine dependent female smokers and age-matched female non-smokers, we employed functional MRI (fMRI) at rest. METHODS: Data were processed with independent component analysis (ICA) to identify resting state networks (RSNs). We identified a subcortical limbic network and three discrete PFC networks: a medial prefront

Socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of heavy and non-heavy smokers among schizophrenia inpatients in a Chinese Han population.

OBJECTIVE: Despite higher smoking rates in schizophrenia, few studies have explored the clinical-demographic correlates of different amounts of smoking exposure. Little is known about the association between smoking severity and clinical phenotypes in Chinese patients with schizophrenia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated differences between heavy (≥1 pack/day) and non-heavy (<1 pack/day) smoking in 550 male inpatients with schizophrenia using clinician-administered questionnaires and the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence. They also were rated on the Positive and Negative Symptom Sc

An early lung cancer diagnosis model for non-smokers incorporating ct imaging analysis and circulating genetically abnormal cells (CACs).

BACKGROUND: An increase in the prevalence of lung cancer that is not smoking-related has been noticed in recent years. Unfortunately, these patients are not included in low dose computer tomography (LDCT) screening programs and are not actually considered in early diagnosis. Therefore, improved early diagnosis methods are urgently needed for non-smokers. It is necessary to establish a prediction model for non-smoking individuals at intermediate to high risk of developing lung cancer (LC) and develop a tool to address the significant gap in evaluating pulmonary nodules in non-smokers. METHODS:

Does Extraesophageal Reflux Support the Development of Lung Adenocarcinoma? Analysis of Pepsin in Bronchoalveolar Lavage in Non-Smoker Patients.

The significance of extraesophageal reflux as a risk factor in lung adenocarcinoma has been understudied. In this study, we investigated whether extraesophageal reflux leads to higher pepsin concentrations in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in patients with lung adenocarcinoma compared to controls. Subjects were recruited from non-smoker patients (lifelong non-smokers and ex-smokers with more than 5 years of non-smoking history) who had undergone bronchoscopy due to pulmonary abnormalities on a CT scan and met the inclusion criteria. Based on histological verification of the lung process, the pat

Bone Langerhans cell histiocytosis with pulmonary involvement in an adult non-smoker: A case report and brief review of the literature.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease of unknown cause, which encompasses a set of disorders of multiple organs with various clinical presentations that share the common characteristic of sizeable Langerhans cell infiltration. The clinical spectrum of LCH ranges from solitary bone lesions to involvement of other organs. lung involvement in LCH may be part of a multisystem disease, which almost exclusively occurs in adult smokers, while it is overlooked or misdiagnosed in the majority of non-smokers. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the chest is crucial for diagnosi

[Association of genetic polymorphisms in IL-6 and IL-1β gene with risk of lung cancer in female non-smokers].

BACKGROUND: Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β), known as multifunctional cytokines with high biological activity, play an important role in physiological and pathological responses such as inflammation, immune response and even tumors. There have been multiple polymorphism loci found in IL-6 gene and IL-1β gene. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between IL-6-643 (C/G) and IL-1β-31 (C/T) polymorphisms and lung cancer risk among female non-smokers and explore the interaction effects on lung cancer risk between this two polymorphisms and potential risk factors

Integrative metagenomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic analysis reveal the microbiota-host interplay in early-stage lung adenocarcinoma among non-smokers.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of early-stage lung adenocarcinoma (ES-LUAD) is steadily increasing among non-smokers. Previous research has identified dysbiosis in the gut microbiota of patients with lung cancer. However, the local microbial profile of non-smokers with ES-LUAD remains largely unknown. In this study, we systematically characterized the local microbial community and its associated features to enable early intervention. METHODS: A prospective collection of ES-LUAD samples (46 cases) and their corresponding normal tissues adjacent to the tumor (41 cases), along with normal lung tissue

Comparison of the efficacy of pharmacoinvasive management for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction in smokers versus non-smokers (from the Trial of Routine Angioplasty and Stenting After Fibrinolysis to Enhance Reperfusion in Acute Myocardial Infarction).

Compared with non-smokers, cigarette smokers with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarctions derive greater benefit from fibrinolytic therapy. However, it is not known whether the optimal treatment strategy after fibrinolysis differs on the basis of smoking status. The Trial of Routine Angioplasty and Stenting After Fibrinolysis to Enhance Reperfusion in Acute Myocardial Infarction (TRANSFER-AMI) randomized patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarctions to a routine early invasive (pharmacoinvasive) versus a standard (early transfer only for rescue percutaneous coronary interventio

Higher nicotine dependence and greater smoking abstinence in parental than non-parental smokers: a secondary analysis of smoking cessation trials.

OBJECTIVE: Parental smokers account for approximately one-third of smokers worldwide and often exhibit distinct smoking and quitting behaviors compared to non-parental smokers. Understanding these differences is crucial for developing targeted cessation interventions; however, current evidence remains limited. METHODS: This secondary analysis pooled individual participant data from 10 community-based smoking cessation trials conducted in Hong Kong between 2010 and 2020 (N = 10,871 adult daily smokers). We compared parental smokers (those with at least one child) and non-parental smokers in te

Elevated plasma 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α levels in human smokers originate primarily from enzymatic instead of non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation.

It is widely accepted that free radicals in tobacco smoke lead to oxidative stress and generate the popular lipid peroxidation biomarker 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α (8-iso-PGF2α). However, 8-iso-PGF2α can simultaneously be produced in vivo by the prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthases (PGHS) induced by inflammation. This inflammation-dependent mechanism has never been considered as a source of elevated 8-iso-PGF2α in tobacco smokers. The goal of this study is to quantify the distribution of chemical- and PGHS-dependent 8-iso-PGF2α formation in the plasma of tobacco smokers and non-smokers. The influ

Generalized emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in a farmer, non-smoker - the more we seek, the more we find.

UNLABELLED: Although alpha-1 antitrypsin (A1AT) deficiency represents one of the most common genetically conditioned diseases in the population of Caucasian adult individuals, it is rarely diagnosed. Alpha-1 antitrypsin is an important component of the anti-proteolytic protection in the lungs. Individuals affected by the protein deficiency are exposed to a higher risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema or liver diseases. A CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old farmer, non-smoker, spraying orchards since the age of 15 years, was admitted to the Department with dyspnea a

Secondhand smoke is associated with peptic ulcer disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease in non-smokers in a large Taiwanese population study.

BACKGROUND: Active smokers are known to be at an increased risk of both gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and peptic ulcer disease (PUD), however the role of passive smoking remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to examine whether secondhand smoke (SHS) is associated with PUD and GERD. METHODS: In this population-based study, we conducted a large-scale analysis with 88,297 never-smokers (male: 18,595; female: 69,702; mean age 50.1 ± 11.0 years) from the Taiwan Biobank. The exposure group was comprised of those who had been exposed to SHS, and the no exposure group as those without SHS
