Correlation between the level of somatic pathology and cytogenetic characteristics of blood was analyzed in a group of liquidators of the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP). A statistically significant correlation was found between the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases and the level of chromosome aberrations (total frequency of chromosome aberrations, frequency of dicentrics and centric rings, frequency of chromatid aberrations). The results obtained are of great importance for the substantiated prediction of the development of postradiation pathologies.

Recent analyses of children in Belarus and the Ukraine are the first to document large numbers of excess thyroid cancer cases only 4 years after exposure to radiation. In Connecticut (USA), a thyroid cancer increase of a much smaller magnitude occurred in 1990-93, 4-7 years after the Chernobyl accident, for both children and adults. Results are submitted of a 6-month follow-up of 30 patients with prior myocardial infarction residing in the neighbourhood of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, involving investigations designed to study hemodynamics together with immunologic reactivity. A comparison group was formed of 25 Kievites. Both groups demonstrated alterations of immunologic respectively. A conclusion has been reached that there exists association between the above findings and development of myocardial infarction but no relationship was found with exposure to radiation.

BACKGROUND: Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in humans is associated with environmental chemical exposures, and risk is enhanced by genetic variants in glutathione S-transferases (GST) enzymes.
OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that boxer dogs, a breed at risk for lymphoma, would have a higher prevalence of GST variants with predicted low activity, and greater accumulated DNA damage, compared to other breeds. We also hypothesized that lymphoma in boxers would be associated with specific environmental exposures and a higher prevalence of canine GST variants.
