Anxiety disorders represent the most prevalent psychiatric disorders. In addition, a considerable burden is associated with them, not only for individual sufferers, but also for the health care system. However, many patients who might benefit from treatment are not diagnosed or treated. This may partly be due to lack of awareness of the anxiety disorders by primary care practitioners and by the sufferers themselves. In addition, the stigma still associated with psychiatric disorders and lack of confidence in psychiatric treatments are factors leading to no/under recognition and treatment, or t

BACKGROUND: Magical thinking (MT), which has historically been associated with psychotic disorders, has more recently been found to be a central cognitive construct in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) that is associated with a poor prognosis (Einstein and Menzies, 2008). Although MT has been found to distinguish OCD from Panic Disorder (PD) (Einstein and Menzies, 2006), little is known about its role in other anxiety disorders.
AIMS: This study aimed to compare whether elevated levels of magical thinking could distinguish individuals with OCD from non-anxious controls and individuals with

This study was conducted to investigate the similarities and differences in the personality dimensions of patients with pathological gambling disorder (PGD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Thirty-three subjects with PGD, 41 with OCD and 40 normal controls were assessed with the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ), which assesses three personality dimensions: novelty seeking, reward dependence, and harm avoidance. Compared with OCD subjects, PGD subjects expressed significantly greater novelty seeking, impulsiveness, and extravagance. The PGD subjects also reported significa

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic disease with a prevalence in the general population of around 2%-3%, generally accompanied by a severe impairment of functioning and quality of life. A consistent subgroup of patients may not achieve adequate symptom remission with first-line treatments (i.e., cognitive behavioral therapy, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors [SSRIs]). The most validated option for treatment-resistant cases relies on the augmentative use of antipsychotics to SSRIs, preferably of the 'second generation'. Indeed, dopamine appears to be crucially involved in OCD

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been referred to as the "doubting disease," yet there has been little foundational research on its phenomenology and characteristics. Studies of doubt have relied on researchers' idiosyncratic conceptualizations of the construct, resulting in varied assessment methods and different prevalence rates (11-75%). We examined the nature and characteristics of doubt in people with clinical and subclinical OCD so as to identify its nature and characteristics, and factors that may be unique to OCD.
METHODS: A semi-structured interview

Objective: Death anxiety has long been attributed a role as a psychopathologically decisive factor in the development of mental illnesses such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). For example, patients with washing compulsions associate their behavior with a fear of life-threatening diseases or patients with control compulsions report that the constant checking is driven by the fear of fatal or deadly consequences for the occupants.Method: The Bochum Questionnaire to Assess Death Anxiety and Attitudes Towards Death (BOFRETTA) was administered to 31 patients with OCD and 31 healthy volunteer

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a highly prevalent and disabling condition for which currently available treatments are insufficiently effective and alternatives merit priority attention. Psilocybin may represent a safe and effective avenue for treatment of individuals affected by this condition. In this chapter we briefly introduce OCD symptoms, epidemiology, as well as relevant hypotheses on the mechanism of disease that may inform treatment interventions. We briefly describe currently available treatments, mechanisms of action, and efficacy limitations, as preamble to the potential u

INTRODUCTION: This review aims to present the current state of knowledge about attachment and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the connection to the disorder's course, and the treatment effectiveness.
METHOD: A literature search was performed using PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect databases using the following search terms: obsessive compulsive disorder, attachment, therapy, treatment, and long-term outcome. The period of extraction was between January 1990 and October 2020.
RESULTS: Insecure attachment leads to the formation of dysfunctional beliefs about the wo

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Studies on the relations between shame and anxiety and obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) are reviewed, with a focus on recent work.
RECENT FINDINGS: Medium-sized positive correlations have been consistently found across anxiety disorders and OCRDs, suggesting that this relation is transdiagnostic. Most studies focused on shame-proneness and found similar relations across multiple types (e.g. internal, external) and domains (e.g. bodily, characterological, behavioural) of shame, with little variation between clinical and non-clinical populations and differen

The authors present a follow-up of a previously described patient with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Her condition continued to worsen, and she died 5 years after disease onset. Neuropathological findings were consistent with the diagnosis of Pick's disease. They revealed, in addition to the "knife-edge" frontotemporal atrophy, striking atrophy with extensive neuronal loss and gliosis involving the caudate nuclei and, to a lesser degree, the putamens and globus pallidus. Neuroimaging data had showed isolated atrophy of the caudate nuclei in the early stages of Pick's disease in this pat

Very little is known about the treatment of children with an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). No controlled studies have been conducted into the effects of behaviour therapy or other kinds of psychotherapy. There have only been three studies into the effects of antidepressants. After providing some general information on OCD, this article discusses the possibilities, effects and some of the difficulties of treatment.

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms were measured in a consecutive series of new referrals with anorexia nervosa (n = 29) and bulimia nervosa (n = 77). In contrast with previous reports, there was no significant difference on MOCI scores between eating disorder groups and normal controls. A consecutive series of 38 patients with bulimia nervosa then entered a structured treatment programme. Poor outcome cases had a higher score on the MOCI-doubting sub-scale. However, there was no significant difference in obsessive-compulsive scores between those who were binge-free and those who were bingeing dail

The present study examine the extent to which attentional resources are allocated toward distracting affective and disorder-relevant pictures under task-relevant competition in participants with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; N = 33) and controls (N = 31). Competition between cues was examined using a foreground task where participants detected coherent motion in a flickering random dot kinematogram (RDK) overlaid on pictures ranging in emotional content (pleasant, neutral, unpleasant, and OCD-evoking pictures). Steady-state visual evoked potentials (ssVEPs) were measured in response to t

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR) defines obsessions in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as recurrent thoughts, urges, or images that are intrusive, unwanted, and distressing. Because the manual does not include an explicit ego-dystonicity requirement, its definition risks conflating anxiety-driven intrusions with gratification-driven impulses. This ambiguity carries significant forensic implications. When violent ideation is emotionally gratifying, it may still be described as distressing or unwanted, in a practical sense. In

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is associated with functional alterations in how the striatum interacts with the rest of the brain. However, the characterization of these changes in OCD is incomplete. Mapping functional striatal gradients provides a new opportunity to fill this knowledge gap. These gradients provide a spatial representation of continuous changes in whole-brain connectivity within striatal regions. Thus, OCD-related differences in striatal gradients imply changes in the functional organization of striatal connections.
METHODS: We calculated spatial striatal gra

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as a consequence of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been reported in a limited number of case studies. Informed by CARE guidelines, we present the case of a boy in his late adolescence who sustained a severe TBI from a motor vehicle crash. His injuries required a prolonged stay in the hospital, including 3 weeks in the intensive care unit and a craniotomy to evacuate a large subdural haematoma. Obsessive-compulsive behaviours were first observed on discharge from the hospital and became worse over time. Compulsive behaviours were considered in light

BACKGROUND: This review provides an overview of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms, including the four partially distinct subtypes of the disorder, current diagnostic criteria, and common comorbidities. Critically, it focuses on the etiology of OCD, including its underlying neuropathology, and examines cognitive dysfunction in OCD.
METHODS: This review study was conducted by library method.
RESULTS: We show how dysfunction in cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) circuits may underpin symptoms; and shed light on the putative neurochemistry within these loops such as the role of s
